[edit]Database of Canada National Topographic System map sheet names
[edit]I do not know which forum on Wikipedia is the appropriate forum for this kind of question, so I am asking it here.
I created a series of templates for allowing the display of the name of a map sheet from Canada's National Topographic System, but believing they were completely unused, User:WikiCleanerMan requested that they be deleted. The root templates for these were {{Canada NTS Grid}} and {{Canada NTS Map Sheet}}. The former, now deleted, calculated an NTS map sheet designator from a latitude and longitude, while the latter takes the map sheet designator, broken into its component parts, and outputs a link to show the extent of that map sheet on an overview map on Natural Resources Canada's website. The functionality that I implemented before and now want to re-implement is something that takes a latitude and longitude and calculates either a small-scale (1:250,000) or large-scale (1:50,000) map sheet designator, and then further translates that designator into a map sheet title, based on a lookup table provided by Natural Resources Canada. For instance, the coordinates of Beaconsfield, Quebec as given on Wikidata are 45°26'N 73°52'W, or in decimal form, 45.433333 -73.866667. I want a solution that will take in these coordinates and automatically calculate a 1:250,000 scale map sheet ID of "31H" or a 1:50,000 scale map sheet ID of "31H5", then lookup "31H" or "31H5" in said lookup table and output a name of "Montreal", which is the name of NTS 1:250,000 map sheet 31H, or "Lachine", which is the name of NTS 1:50,000 map sheet 31H5. Is there a way I could re-implement this functionality using Wikidata and a Lua module? And if so, where would I be able to re-submit this lookup table?

- Probably, but if the template wasn't used anywhere, and you did not argue to keep it at its tfd, why bother?

- I did not even think that such functionality was under threat from these deletions. I now want to re-implement it. Denelson83 03:11, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- Destroying is much easier than creating, and many people go around looking for easy things to do. If you don't actually implement usages of a template or other mechanism, it's likely to be deleted at any arbitrary time. (Sometimes they'll even set a bot up to remove usages in order to delete something.) So if you don't want to spend your time building sand castles, you'll need a plan to get uses into articles (and guard your mechanism until you do, and maybe after, too). - R. S. Shaw (talk) 04:20, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- Well, if I could get all this implemented in just one template, without wasting too much space in the English Wikipedia's database, it would be a lot easier for me to get this used in articles and guarded in such a way. -- Denelson83 04:46, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- Were it me, I would implement all of
{{Canada NTS Grid}}
,{{Canada NTS Map Sheet}}
, and their subtemplates in a lua module. Better performance and the 'unused' functionality is protected by those portions of the module that are 'used'. Then, when you are ready to use{{Canada NTS Grid}}
, recreate that template as an{{#invoke::}}
of your module. - —Trappist the monk (talk) 12:36, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- And how do I do that? I have never used Lua before. Denelson83 02:53, 27 March 2022 (UTC)
- I see that you have begun. I added some comments. If you have questions, my talk page.

Report User
[edit]Hi, everyone. I just made some edits related to population of Salem according to official census. And i cited the sources too. But @MT731: continuously reverting my edits. And, while asking him for reason on his talk page. He is reverted the messege on his talk page too continuously. And he also put the same message on my talk page. So, what can I do ? Thanks in advance. MVDGC (talk) 06:21, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- MVDGC, hopefully an admin will see this and advise. However, an editor is entitled to remove comments from their talk page and this is understood to mean they have read them, see Wikipedia:User pages#Removal of comments, notices, and warnings. I would suggest reverting your latest edit which reinstated your comment at User talk:MT731. TSventon (talk) 07:59, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- I see there's an edit war (or maybe several) under way at Salem, Tamil Nadu, and none of the participants has tried to discuss the issues on the article's talk page. If you think you're right, you're more likely to get your way by calm discussion there than by edit warring. Maproom (talk) 08:29, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

Logs, hide bot edits in
[edit]So, in the same way you can hide bot edits from your watchlist, can logs be narrowed too? E.g: the block log, where only one out of the last thousand (!!!) entries is not from ST47Proxybot. SN54129 13:55, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- I find it's easier to just edit the watchlist to cull stuff you're unlikely to ever look at again. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 23:12, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Serial Number 54129: AFAICT no, though there mmight be an admin-only gadget I can't see. The current Watchlist (and recent changes) filter interface hasn't been here for so long, I still remember a time where you had to actually follow links to change your filter setting, and hardreload the page to update it. Devika Rani
[edit]Devika Rani ' s Maternal Grandmother is Not Sukumari Devi , Sister of Rabindranath Tagore . — Preceding unsigned comment added by 223.191.51.28 (talk) 20:07, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- The place to discuss this is Talk:Devika Rani. I notice that the claim is followed by three citations: I can only see one of them, but that one appears to support it. If you have reliable published sources that say otherwise, be sure to mention them in your discussion. ColinFine (talk) 20:20, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
Redirect
[edit]I don't know how to create a redirect but I would like to suggest one: I had, unsuccessfully, just been looking for someone by the name of Frederick Pratt Green which is how his name is given in all hymn books that are available to me. It took me a while and a couple of detours to find that there actually is an article on Fred Pratt Green. As Frederick obviously is his full name, is it possible to create a redirect for future users? Thanks! --91.34.38.103 (talk) 21:01, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
I'm supposed to fill out a form & use the wiki format? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.191.252.123 (talk) 21:02, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- Done. The markup is
#REDIRECT [[Fred Pratt Green]]
. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:23, 26 March 2022 (UTC)- Thank you! --91.34.38.103 (talk) 21:48, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- In the future, you can use Wikipedia:How to make a redirect if you like. GoingBatty (talk) 00:47, 27 March 2022 (UTC)
