Screenshots for talk pages[edit]

Is it possible to upload screenshots for display in talk page discussions? It'd be useful to illustrate issues related to the visual design of pages. I've been using https://imgbb.com and external links. It'd be nice to be able to display screenshots inline though. Thanks. fgnievinski (talk) 00:03, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi fgnievinski. It would depend on the copyright status of the whatever you screenshot as explained in c:COM:SCREENSHOT. A screenshot of a copyright protected work is also protected by copyright and thus would be treated as non-free content for English Wikipedia purposes. Non-free content can only be used in the article namespace per non-free content use criterion #9, which means it can't be displayed on article talk pages (see WP:TPG#Non-free images) or user talk pages (see WP:UP#Non-free files). You can, however, link to external websites in talk page discussions as long as doing so isn't in violation of WP:COPYLINK. In other words, linking to an official website in which it's clear that the original copyright holder posted the content is generally OK; however, linking to other websites showing copyrighted content or screenshots of copyright content not posted by the original copyright holder could be consider a copyright violation and should be avoided. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:02, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the layout of downloaded pages[edit]

@ MohamedRefaat999 (talk) 00:31, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

1. What is your question?
2. What do you mean by "downloaded pages"? --Orange Mike | Talk 00:47, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello How do you do
The problem I face is the new version of downloaded pdfs from Wikipedia pages
I think it is since january
But i didn't notice it except for now
The new update that you have done changed the layout and formatting of pages after being downloaded as pdfs into mobile or pc
Unfortunately It became awful
Hyperlinks became black instead of blue
Pages show mobile site instead of the much-better desktop site
In brief,it became less friendly
I hope the old layout and formatting of downloaded pages as PDF returns again
N.B.
The defect is from Wikipedia websites
Not the web browsers
I have tried many many browsers
Both in pc and mobile, and they gave the same result..
Thanks in advance MohamedRefaat999 (talk) 00:53, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't get a good reply here, you can try Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:28, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MohamedRefaat999 The .pdf files that Wikipedia offers are now in the same format as the Vector 2022 skin, not specifically a mobile or PC view. It doesn't matter what device you use to view a page, the download from it will be the same. The most noticeable difference is that there will be no section for a table of contents and it is true that the hyperlinks are now rendered with black underlining. I think that you could revert to the previous (legacy Vector) skin using the menu you will find upper left on PC screens (leading to an option in your Special:preferences) and once using the old skin the .pdf may (I have not confirmed this) revert to the version you are more familiar with. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:19, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately I have tried this option
I reverted to the 2010 version
But no difference happens
Still black hyperlinks
Still mobile view instead of desktop site
Now i don't know what to do
&really can't understand why Wikipedia has made such a modification regarding .PDF Files which is absolutely worse than the preceding formatting
clearly for anyone that the current interface &layout of pdf files is much less friendly
But what i can confirm is that this PDF modification is related to the 2022 vector skin which began on (18)january 2023
Because i have an PDF For a page that i downloaded on(17)january2023
and it was very good-with the old layout&formatting of blue hyperlinks
And Also i have an PDF For a page that i downloaded on(19)january2023
and it was very bad-with the recent layout&formatting of black hyperlinks
(I checked both dates in my file manager so i am sure for what i am saying) MohamedRefaat999 (talk) 11:32, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Mohamed. You're talking to the wrong people. Hardly anybody on this page has any involvement in the software. That is why Gråbergs Gråa Sång directed you to WP:VPT. ColinFine (talk) 14:04, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ok i will try to contact them
Thank you MohamedRefaat999 (talk) 14:57, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion of my name in notable persons of Shikarpur Sindh Pakistan[edit]

kindly include my name in notable persons of Shikarpur Sindh Pakistan. I am a Surgeon and have qualified masters in surgery probably first in town. Dr Agha Jan Muhammad Agha Jan Muhammad (talk) 07:37, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Agha Jan Muhammad In order to do that, there must be an article about you. In order for there to be an article about you, you must receive significant coverage in independent reliable sources, showing how you meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person. You are highly advised against attempting to write an article yourself, please read the autobiography policy. My advice is that you go on about your career and not worry about Wikipedia- there are good reasons to not want to be mentioned here. If you truly meet the criteria, an independent editor will eventually take note of you in independent sources and choose to write about you. Any article about you would not be yours to exclusively control like social media. 331dot (talk) 07:43, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hide inline citations[edit]

How do we hides the small reference numbers in the main article text. Making the text more readable? Ffyyff (talk) 10:33, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ffyyff: You already asked this at the Teahouse. Please don't ask at multiple venues to avoid duplicating volunteer effort. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 10:40, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Italics[edit]

For Italian foods with titles that include Italian words that are not common in the English language (e.g. "Bocconcini"), do I have to write in italics also the first (or first words) of the page (those in bold) and the title? JackkBrown (talk) 11:29, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you're treating it as an Italian word, rather than a loanword, then, in the article text, you should enclose it in a language tag, which will do any required formatting as well. In this case, {{lang}} and {{lang-it}} give "Italian: bocconcini" and "bocconcini" respectively. So that article would begin Bocconcini (Italian pronunciation: [bokkonˈtʃiːni]; singular bocconcino [bokkonˈtʃiːno], "small mouthful")... Bazza (talk) 12:03, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bazza 7: do I have to write in italics also the title of the infobox? JackkBrown (talk) 13:57, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: I would have thought that sensible. Bocconcini doesn't have an infobox, but in Scamorza, for example, you could include | name = {{lang|it|Scamorza}} in the infobox. Bazza (talk) 14:13, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bazza 7: in which line do I write it? JackkBrown (talk) 20:24, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Result on Military Infobox[edit]

I wanted to ask if I could add these fields to a military result infobox [1] as I've seen many wiki pages do it that way. NormalguyfromUK (talk) 16:01, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You are having a content dispute with Gugrak. You both need to stop Edit warring, and work to reach consensus, following dispute resolution procedures if you need to. ColinFine (talk) 14:12, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again but I still want to ask if I can do it like I showed above and yes because of Gugrak I'm having problems almost all the edits I do are removed by Gugrak NormalguyfromUK (talk) 19:15, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@NormalguyfromUK, if you two can't come to a consensus on the talk page, you have several options (as outlined here). You could ask for a WP:3O, you could post at MILHIST, you could start an WP:RfC, etc. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 19:50, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to add new fields to an infobox, you should discuss this on the template's talk page first ColinFine (talk) 12:10, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Need some help here: [2]. Maineartists (talk) 15:46, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Maineartists: NPlace a request at WP:RFPP for the page to be semi-protected. That will stop the IP editor from removing content. RudolfRed (talk) 16:05, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As an AfC reviewer, it seems abundantly clear that Draft:Greg Brockman (a draft that I created) is highly notable and relevant right now. However, I cannot directly create the page, because it must be approved by an administrator (due to previous deletions). Is there anywhere I can notify administrators of the status of the draft, as my sense is they rarely look through AfC backlog. Ajshul<talk> 16:17, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I see there is a review waiting. If it is approved by AFC, you or the reviewer who approves it can request it be unprotected at requests for page protection. I just took a look at it, and I think that although a lot has changed since the 2016 AFD, it's a good idea given the history of the article to tread with caution.
He's mostly notable in the context of his company, and notability is not inherited. The most recent deletion discussion included a lot of chatter about sources that were more about his company than about him, and although in your draft I see more sources that discuss him in some depth, most of them are still more about the company and its products. Given the concerns raised in the last AFD I just want to see an independent reviewer sign off before unprotecting the mainspace title so it can be moved. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:05, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

HotCat and ProveIt not working[edit]

HotCat and ProveIt have not been working for the past few days for me. I have been turning them off and on and also logging out and in, but those methods don't seem to work. Can anyone help? Lettlerhellocontribs 18:56, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by HotCat not working? Ruslik_Zero 19:59, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The prompts to change categories are not showing up. Lettlerhellocontribs 19:59, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lettler: What is your browser? Is HotCat enabled at commons:Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets and does it appear at commons:Category:Example images? PrimeHunter (talk) 01:06, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Help with external links[edit]

I'm trying to get the Costa Concordia disaster article to FA status, but there is an issue with the external links section. I read WP:EXTERNAL LINKS but I'm still confused on how to fix it. Thanks in advance for your help! Cessaune [talk] 21:37, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cessaune, if "there is an issue", then what is the issue? Alternatively, you might point to somebody's complaint about an issue. -- Hoary (talk) 23:01, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's a cleanup template, and that's all I know/understand about it. Cessaune [talk] 23:10, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
{{toomanylinks}} was added at this edit. You might ask the editor who added the template for assistance.
Trappist the monk (talk) 23:34, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cessaune The guidance is at WP:ELMIN. It seems clear that having 24 external links in that article is too many. Some could be discussed in the text and turned into citations. Others are videos, with many being primary sources that probably are unnecessary. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:09, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
