Please Help with Pesky Sidebar.[edit]

I hate the new interface. The additions could have been added without mucking up the old functionality. - Weird flip down top bar. Wasted vertical space, and the biggie - I hide the sidebar every time, but it doesn't remember. How can I get it to stay closed unless I want to open it? thanks Billyshiverstick (talk) 04:25, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Are you asking about a sudden change to Wikipedia's appearance? It is because the default skin has changed from the Vector legacy (2010) skin to the new Vector (2022) skin. If you would like to change back to the old one, you can, as a registered user, click on the in the top-right corner and choose Preferences. Once there, go to Preferences → Appearance → Skins → check Vector legacy (2010).
If you would like to leave feedback, you can do so at Wikipedia talk:Vector 2022. - David Biddulph (talk) 06:54, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bug[edit]

Hello, I am new to Wikipedia, and my edits keep getting reverted. When I checked the history again, my edits were wrong, but when I am editing them, it's alright. I always review my changes before publishing. Please help me. It can cause my account to be banned. ComprehensiveCognoscente (talk) 06:20, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what is happening here either. I think it's not really an issue anymore considering you've made contributions afterwards that seems to be alright, or its just occurring infrequently. Anyways we assume good faith here, don't worry too much about it as long as you're not intentionally making mistakes. Keep up the good work btw :D Justiyaya 07:48, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you@Justiyaya. I'm just anxious that I might get banned for these mistakes that I didn't intentionally make. I just want to provide quality work here on Wikipedia. ComprehensiveCognoscente (talk) 07:51, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah no worries ComprehensiveCognoscente, you're welcome and happy editing! Justiyaya 07:53, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What is the procedure for relisting a page for deletion?[edit]

I'm referring to the article edupunk. It was listed for deletion over a decade ago and, imho, was kept only by the skin of it's teeth (no consensus). Do I need to request a deletion review or can I simply relist it on AfD? Cheers. Tdmurlock (talk) 06:31, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Tdmurlock start a new AFD, the previous AFD is so long ago it's unlikely to be persuasive. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 07:52, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Tdmurlock, you should renominate instead of requesting a deletion review considering it has been >10 years after the AFD. Justiyaya 07:53, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple citations of in-source locations from same legal source[edit]

I am trying to merge duplicate citations from a legal source that has paragraph/section numbers rather than page numbers. Per WP:CITEPAGE, I understand we should use the {{loc=}} or {{at=}} parameter to quote paragraph numbers (e.g. para. 3.14). However, this does not produce the same superscript as we see with the </nowiki> page-number parameter : 3:14 . Instead I see {loc=3.14} and {at=3:14}. What is the correct coding please? Muzilon (talk) 07:02, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Muzilon, did you check the examples at Template:Rp#How_to_use? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:41, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Plastikspork: I got the impression the {{Rp}} template was to be used for specific page numbers rather than "in-source locations" such as paragraphs/sections. However, using {{Rp}} in this case produces the unsightly superscript : para 3.14 . Is this acceptable on Wikipedia? Muzilon (talk) 21:11, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Muzilon, the documentation at Template:Rp#How_to_use indicates that stuff like : back cover  is acceptable, so I don't see why not. If you want more feedback, you could ask at Wikipedia talk:Citing sources, or see if anyone has more insight here. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 21:17, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why do pages suddenly not have a Table of contents?[edit]

Hi! I'm suddenly not seeing Tables of contents for any articles - is this something to do with the new template? It makes it hard to get an overview of articles. Lijil (talk) 08:06, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you would like to leave feedback, you can do so at Wikipedia talk:Vector 2022. - They moved the TOC to one of the sidebars. - David Biddulph (talk) 08:10, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The TOC is in the left sidebar, but you don't see it until you scroll down into the content of the page. ColinFine (talk) 09:24, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Categories and sub-categories[edit]

I am thinking of creating a sub-category to the existing Category:Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales. It would be Category:Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Monmouthshire. In time, I would envisage similar sub-categories for the other Welsh counties. I think this would follow the model in England where we have Category:Listed parks and gardens in Cornwall as a sub-category of Category:Listed parks and gardens in England by county, which is itself a sub-category of Category:Listed parks and gardens in England, (although the County sub-category is split even further by listing grade, e.g. Category:Grade I listed parks and gardens in Cornwall.

But I don't know much about Categorisation on Wikipedia, so my first question is: is this a good idea, and is there a Categorisation forum/talkpage where I could ask? And, assuming it is, my second question is: how do I do it? Any advice greatly appreciated. KJP1 (talk) 14:18, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@KJP1: Hi there! The Category:Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales has a talk page with WikiProjects on top. You could post in on one of those WikiProject talk pages (e.g. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Horticulture and Gardening).
You could also request a new category at Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Redirects and categories, or learn about the creation of new categories at WP:CREATECAT. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 15:37, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
GoingBatty - Some very good suggestions, thank you. I have raised it on the Wales Project page and, if the idea finds favour, shall access your other suggested sources for help. KJP1 (talk) 16:32, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
KJP1 there is a step by step guide to creating a new category here. TSventon (talk) 19:19, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

TOC is missing when printing a wikipedia article[edit]

Question also asked at Teahouse—please respond there

I have notice that the Wikipedia has changed its look. The main change I am concerned with is that the Table of Content (TOC) is on the side. If you wish to print a wikipedia article using the print/export tool, the TOC is not included. Is there a way to include the TOC in the print/pdf? Theophilius (talk) 14:56, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Theophilius, if you are logged in, you can go into your preferences and under "Appearance" change to use "Vector legacy (2010)". After that, the print should show the TOC. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:57, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading photos[edit]

1. I had to create a new user account. I don't remember my previous user name and my old email addresses have been discontinued due to hacking. 2. I want to replace a photo of our neighborhood's founder. When I initially uploaded the photo, it only showed Ditty's head and shoulders. I found the complete photo online. 3. Because my account is new, Wikipedia is not allowing me to replace the photo. Petunia1916 (talk) 17:49, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The overwhelming majority of photos you find online are copyrighted and often cannot be used here. Can you give us more detail? --Orange Mike | Talk 17:53, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

new layout[edit]

I HATE the new layout. It's more processing power. too many web forms. just leave it basic like it was. this is AWFUL! I just want the basic table of content inside the top of the articles. to hell with this garbage!!!!! 108.248.28.193 (talk) 22:18, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
