Mzee jomo kenyatta son[edit]

he was the son of mzee jomo kenyatta from his first wife grace wahu Ben muya (talk) 04:20, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

OK. What do you expect volunteers here at the Help Desk to do with that information?
If you want to suggest a change to a Wikipedia article, please do so on the WP:talk page of the article - preferably with a citation of a reliable source for the information. Information that you know (or that I know) is not acceptable in a Wikipedia article without a source. ColinFine (talk) 11:20, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to change the preview of Lusitania[edit]

When you hover over the link of "Lusitania" in the Background section of the page Titanic, the only thing it shows is the picture and "it was made in 1569". How do I change this? Kzhangak (talk) 04:47, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Kzhangak: this was caused by vandalism in the RMS Lusitania article that has been reverted. -Arch dude (talk) 05:32, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude
But it is still there for me. Is it just on my end? Kzhangak (talk) 05:58, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Seems OK just now. Have you tried refreshing the page? Martin of Sheffield (talk) 07:26, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Kzhangak: mw:Page Previews uses caching and sometimes shows an old version. I saw it too. A purge fixed it. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:42, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! It worked! Kzhangak (talk) 04:01, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Possible incorrect licensing on a commons image[edit]

How do I challenge the licensing on an image held on commons? I recently reverted the addition of this image file:Office_women_in_pencil_skirt.png here, as I'm pretty sure it's not the author's own work (and in fact there's a whole boat load of uploads I think are not theirs), but I don't recall the process to challenge. Chaheel Riens (talk) 05:47, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You need to bring up Commons issues at Commons. See C:Help:Contents for guidance as to where to raise this. Mjroots (talk) 09:14, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Chaheel Riens: Their upload File:Prostitute seducing with her client.jpg is a definte copyright infringment. I found the Shutterstock original and have nominated that for deletion. Checking the image that you spotted, reverse image search points to it being from a porn video. Look at my talk page on Commons, someone left me a note on the quick way to tag stuff that needs the Commons version of Speedy, follow the link in their note.- X201 (talk) 10:55, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Chaheel Riens: Just an update. User blocked as sock by Commons admin. All images deleted. Well spotted. - X201 (talk) 15:14, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Carla "KC" Hanson article[edit]

A page was created about me several years ago, Carla "KC" Hanson, and I discovered it by accident. I did not create it not authorize it, but did not mind. It was mostly factual, but had one error. That's when I signed up for Wiki editing, and I fixed the error. The page has now been removed, which is disappointing since the fact of my existence has not changed. This begs several questions. 1. Can I see the removed page in any archive? 2. Who has the authority to completely remove pages? 3. May I know who both posted my page and who removed it? KCinPDX (talk) 05:56, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

An article titled Carla Hanson was deleted as a result of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Carla Hanson. (1) Yes, you can see it here. (2) An "administrator", if an "AfD" ("Articles for Deletion" process) has determined that it should be removed. (3) It was created by PortlandSaint, edited by various others (including not once but twice by you, in both June and December of 2020), nominated for deletion by Bedivere, and deleted by Liz. -- Hoary (talk) 08:32, 5 May 2023 (UTC) PS Perhaps I should have pinged KCinPDX. Well then, belatedly pinging KCinPDX. -- Hoary (talk) 21:31, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary Your "ping" is a red link to her non-existent userpage. Does that really ping? 🙂 David10244 (talk) 05:15, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
David10244, I believe so, -- Hoary (talk) 05:23, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@KCinPDX One point: it's not necessary that you "authorize" an article about yourself. I'm sure the current Pope didn't authorize the article that's about him.
As the linked deletion discussion implies, a subject needs to be notable, meeting certain notability guidelines, for an article to survive. Existence is not enough, or else we could have an article on each person who is alive or has ever lived. David10244 (talk) 05:12, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I posted my questions before I found the section on "notability". After I read that, I was even more curious as to why a page on me was posted in the first place. And just now checking out the notes on "Portland Saint," the original author, I am scratching my head as to why someone with opposite political views would create a Wiki Bio on me. I am guessing those errors in his "bio" of me may have been intentional. 2601:1C2:980:3C10:E984:7D10:5191:8B2A (talk) 07:56, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia editors are not limited to creating articles about topics that they "like". Any editor can create any article that they want, but repeatedly creating poor quality articles can lead to sanctions including blocks. Since the article in question was deleted 2-1/2 months ago, I do not see the point in discussing factual inaccuracies. It is gone, after all. Cullen328 (talk) 08:05, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
KCinPDX, administrators are the only group of Wikipedia editors who have the power to delete articles, and I am one of about 450 active administrators. We need to follow policy, though, and this deletion was the result of a community discussion. Cullen328 (talk) 08:10, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear, I am not arguing for my "bio;" I am fine with the policy, and I am glad I understand it better. Frankly, I have just kept an occasional eye on my bio since the original had the errors I've noted. However, I would caution any of the administrators to not be overly blasé that an error is moot because a post is deleted. "Portland Saint" took the time to create a page on me which had an error that was significant, describing me as affiliated with a well-known ANTI-LGBT group in the 90's when I was and am a LGBT activist. Yes, my page is moot, but, for whatever reason, he created a false bio of me, there is a strong possibility and even likelihood that more of the "Saint's" posts/pages contain factual errors and even disinformation, and I am guessing that there is a Wiki rule that applies to posting inaccurate information. 2601:1C2:980:3C10:DD41:9B8E:B4CF:3492 (talk) 15:57, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You misunderstand how Wikipedia works. Wikipedia is crowdsourced by a huge number of self-selected volunteers editors with no hierarchy and no assigned tasks. There are no "administrators" in the sense you use the term: our administrators carry out functions like deletion after editors arrive at a consensus. We (including you) are all equally responsible for correcting errors. This chaotic process has resulted in what is arguably the best encyclopedia ever created by a very large margin. We have about 100,000 editors active in any given 30-day period, collectively making more than 10 edits per minute, every minute of the year. You are free to investigate "Portland Saint"'s edit history, and you have exactly the same rights and responsibilities to do so as any other editor. If you find a pattern of bad editing, come back here and we can help you with the next steps. -Arch dude (talk) 17:13, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Second order disambiguation[edit]

At present Wu Qing is a disambiguation page between

However...a second politician by that name has now emerged (a male born April 1965 obviously distinct from the female born November 1937 who is the last one listed above). He would seem destined to get an article as he's listed as an Alternate Member of the 20th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (currently executive vice mayor of Shanghai Municipality so number 2 to the mayor and around number 5 in the combined party/state leadership there...Bloomberg News has speculated that he will succeed Yi Huiman as head of the Securities Regulatory Commission and until 2018 he chaired the Shanghai Stock Exchange). The two politicians are of the same party and nationality so what does one call the article for him?

  • male politician?
  • Shanghai politician?
  • politician born 1965? (the two Lu Haos would seem a precedent for this).

I realize the disambigs here are rather chaotic and coverage of namesakes can be spotty. Every president of the Ramakrishna Order has an article except for the first and longest serving of them all who despite being the "spiritual son" of Ramakrishna himself is shown on the Brahmananda disambig as a redlink with a link to a subhead on Disciples of Ramakrishna and I wonder if this is because there's no consensus on titling an article for him (redlink is "Swami Brahmananda" below two Brahmanand(a) Swamis). William Edgar "Bill" Oddie has an article but the writer/cleric/editor William Oddie [1][2] (1939-2019) doesn't even get a hatnote to distinguish them. And the Amadeus Quartet that disbanded on its first death in 1987 has an article with no mention made of the four Romanian women who have performed under that name since 2000[3][4] to distinguish them.

But...any clarity increase is an improvement? 108.29.145.226 (talk) 06:06, 5 May 2023 (UTC) 108.29.145.226 (talk) 06:06, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For footballers, the standard dab format is (footballer, born xxxx), e.g. Phil Jones (footballer, born 1961) and Phil Jones (footballer, born 1992). I don't see why this can't be extended to politicians. Clarityfiend (talk) 09:29, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects[edit]

Where can I find both recent and old redirects? Is a log present? Dancing Dollar (let's talk) 08:07, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia contains several million redirects. As far as I am aware they are not logged separately from articles. Can you be more specific? Shantavira|feed me 08:33, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Special:WhatLinksHere example: Special:WhatLinksHere/User:Dancing_Dollar .... 0mtwb9gd5wx (talk) 12:43, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Select "Hide transclusions" and "Hide links" on WhatLinksHere to see all current redirects to the page. There aren't any for User:Dancing Dollar. If you want to find former redirects then there is no general way. There are some ways to guess and examine page histories. If this is what you want then do you have a specific page in mind? Supergrass & Informant[edit]

Supergrass (informant) & Informant should be merged. What are the templates? .... 0mtwb9gd5wx (talk) 12:35, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I see no reason to merge those articles, but you would first need to initiate a discussion on the article talk pages. The templates are Template:Merge and the similar ones listed on that page. Shantavira|feed me 14:07, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Article feels weird[edit]

This article feels like a press release and has a lot of inline links to its own website. How do I ask for help to fix it?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randolph-Macon_Academy Kurkulc (talk) 13:40, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've tagged this one, but in future just add {{Cleanup press release|article}} to the top of the article. If it's a specific section, change article to section and place it in section in question. But the absolute best way is to dive in and clean it up yourself. - X201 (talk) 13:51, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Citation query[edit]

Hello. I had an edit paragraph removed by Aaron Liu as he said it lacked citation. I have some issues with how to cite this particular paragraph on Stewart Nozette PhD. On the talk page for Stewart I posted that I was adding this and that I had documents pertaining to his pardon but as I don't have a website I was aaking how I could make this available to cite what I had added. Also, although his literary agency - Gold Dust, out of Las Vegas - have signed him they have not updated their authors page with him as yet, so I could not cite that. It seems that the only issue with the innocuous paragraph is the lack of citation - given what I've said, is there anything I can do to make the edit allowable? I have not edited on Wiki before, so would appreciate feedback. I spoke to Stewart about this and he says the official pardon number is C277648 and that they are part of the Presidential Records ACT and can be obtained from the National Archives. Can this be cited? Can I submit the documents to Wiki somehow? Aaron was unable to answer this and directed me here. Thanks. SalzenD Salzend (talk) 14:05, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging @Aaron Liu: as a courtesy. In short biographies are held to a higher standard than anything else on Wikipedia. All major claims on Wikipedia need to have a citation, on biographies it's prerequisite; you need the reference, before you type the prose. Someone may be able to help regarding C277648 and National Archives so wait and see what develops. Wikipedia doesn't have a deadline. - X201 (talk) 14:12, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping someone at the help desk would be able to help with the archives Aaron Liu (talk) 18:49, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Salzend You won't need to submit any documents to Wikipedia, but you'll need to create "references" to published material that verifies the information, once those published references exist (or once you can locate them). And you'll put those references into the document, next to the information that the references support. See WP:REFB. David10244 (talk) 05:21, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's good. Thanks for the information, much appreciated. Salzend (talk) 09:59, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Adding an artist[edit]

I want to add an Artist to Wikipedia.

How do I do that? Csmilkov (talk) 14:41, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It all depends on how notable the person is. It would also help considerably if you did not have a conflict of interest caused by being linked to the person in some way. See your first article for more help.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 14:46, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Csmilkov Wikipedia is not a mere database of artists, this is an encyclopedia with criteria for inclusion, such as the definition of a notable musician or notable artist. If a person meets a notablity definition, there then must be significant coverage in independent reliable sources that can be summarized. If you have sources and the person is notable, you may create a draft via Articles for creation. Be advised that creating a new article is the most difficult task to perform on Wikipedia. You are advised to first gain experience by editing existing articles first, and using the new user tutorial. 331dot (talk) 14:48, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

Good morning. Could someone change the title to italics (if I'm not mistaken, titles should not be written in italics). JackkBrown (talk) 14:49, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The title of which article? - X201 (talk) 14:51, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@X201: the page in question is "Tar (drum)". JackkBrown (talk) 14:52, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
MOS:FOREIGN applies.
Trappist the monk (talk) 15:00, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the italic title as tar can be found in the English language.[1] But it's up to consensus.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 15:03, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But that's a word for a stringed instrument. Is there any evidence that this tar, a drum, has the same origin? Maproom (talk) 17:38, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ianmacm: same here: "Saharat Thai Doem". JackkBrown (talk) 17:55, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
People have different interpretations of MOS:FOREIGN. Personally I don't think this needs italic titles either, but will wait to see what other users say.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 18:12, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm inclined to disagree. The guidance at Wikipedia:Manual of Style § Common usage in English recommends the use of English-language dictionaries which Britannica is not. If I go to Google and enter define:tar (link) I get a listing of several dictionary entries for 'tar':
Of these, only wiktionary has a definition that matches the definition of the en.wiki article (see §Etymology 4)
If I go to Google translate and enter the Arabic: طار, it shows the transliteration as tar (link). I can't speak to the accuracy of the translations that it returns but the transliteration does suggest that the use of tar in the en.wiki article is not the common term usually understood by native English speakers as the black sticky stuff. I would therefore markup all instances of tar in the article as {{transliteration|ar|tar}} – perhaps even the title: {{DISPLAYTITLE:{{transliteration|ar|tar}}}}. I don't know if the article should keep the Arabic script طار because unsourced and because the translations at Google translate don't fit – I did look in ar.wiki but there doesn't seem to be a matching drum article there (intitle search results). Wiktionary's Etymology 4 does use طار but that use is unreferenced.

Translating French Wikipedia page into English[edit]

I am looking for information on the book Nos Enfants par Anatole France and found a page on FR.wikipedia but I was surprised to see there is no page on the American Wikipedia. Is there a way to get the page translated? 2600:8802:5300:69E9:256A:2B39:9ABA:61C5 (talk) 18:21, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See the options described at this link. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:44, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
By the way: there is no such thing as "the American Wikipedia". This is the English (language) Wikipedia. ColinFine (talk) 21:47, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to criticise someone who thinks this is the American Wikipedia. Perhaps it was a bit of humour?Naraht (talk) 23:19, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the correction. I thought it was the American Wikipedia because I noticed there is a UK Wikipedia. 2600:8802:5300:69E9:AC52:58E0:4EF6:3A60 (talk) 13:46, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you are meaning uk.wikipedia.org, then that is the Ukrainian language Wikipedia. Here in England we tend to use the ... (wait for it) ... English language Wiki! We allow our transatlantic cousins to read it as well :-) Martin of Sheffield (talk) 22:47, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Martin of Sheffield Do you know where those codes came from? The two-letter ISO country code for Ukraine is "ua". If "uk" is the Internet domain suffix for Ukraine, I wonder why that was chosen for the Internet instead of the ISO code. David10244 (talk) 05:29, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@David10244: I think you are confusing country codes and language codes. See List of ISO 639-1 codes where Ukranian is listed as uk or ukr. The country code for Ukrane according to ISO 3166 is indeed ua or ukr. The ccTLD is .ua. So, uk.wikipedia.org is the Ukranian language Wikipedia whereas ua.wikipedia.org would be the Ukrainian country Wikipedia (which doesn't exist). Stripping personal info from reference URLs?[edit]

What is the term for the extra stuff in the URL that identifies things like how you looked for it and other information about you and what are some of the tools that help strip it off. I know I've seen edits to do that using some sort of at least semi-automated tool.Naraht (talk) 20:17, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's called tracking parameters. Wikipedia:Citing sources/Further considerations#Remove tracking parameters says to remove them but doesn't mention tools. I only know AutoWikiBrowser where you can make your own regular expressions. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:32, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
