September 17[edit]

There is no point in the existence of this page. No sources, horrible grammar, length problems, etc. JackkBrown (talk) 00:59, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What help are you requesting, JackkBrown? -- Hoary (talk) 01:09, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: to assess whether it meets the criteria of the English Wikipedia, because it seems to me that it is not suitable to remain on Wikipedia (no reference for more than 1,000 lines). JackkBrown (talk) 1:11, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
Of course it doesn't meet the criteria of the English Wikipedia. As you may have noticed. tens of thousands of articles do not. So you have a trilemma: (a) improve it; (b) move it in the direction of deletion; (c) ignore it. Note, if you're thinking of (b), that a lack of sources, horrible grammar, and length problems are not reasons for deletion. -- Hoary (talk) 01:23, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
JackkBrown, if it is true that this Italian band has sold 100 million records over its 50 plus year career, then of course the article should remain on Wikipedia. No experienced editor in their right mind would support deletion. We improve rather than deleting articles about obviously notable topics. What is needed is for an Italian speaking editor such as yourself to assemble a list of reliable sources devoting significant coverage to the band, format them into references, and rewrite the article based on summarizing what those sources say about the band. Here is a link to an English language book that discusses the band. Have you read the Italian Wikipedia article about the band? Is it in better shape? Cullen328 (talk) 01:54, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328: I'm very good at fine-tuning en.wiki pages and putting them in order (I don't make minor, but second-order changes. The latest ten edits I have made don't have much to do with it, as they are superfluous modifications). I would like to rewrite the page, but I'm not able to make such large changes. JackkBrown (talk) 02:00, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
JackkBrown, if you are not interested in working on the article, then just move on and forget about it. Cullen328 (talk) 02:04, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio or not?[edit]

The BBC published the full list of the British Film Institute's 100 best British films. Does this mean I can add the 67 missing films to supplement the seemingly arbitrary cutoff at 33 in BFI Top 100 British films, or should I reduce the 33 down to possibly the top ten? Clarityfiend (talk) 03:27, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know but note it was reduced from 100 to 10 in [1] "per WP:CLIST". PrimeHunter (talk) 10:09, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
After ready CLIST, ten sounds about right. Thanks. Clarityfiend (talk) 03:02, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to format birth/death dates and places in the lead?[edit]

I'm working on an article in my sandbox, User:Jaguarnik/Hernando Alonso, and I would like to know how to format a birthdate that would be "before x date" e.g. (born before 1480 - died 17 October 1528). Jaguarnik (talk) 03:43, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jaguarnik, "born before 1480 – died 17 October 1528" looks good to me. If somebody thinks of an alternative that's somehow better, they're free to alter what you wrote. -- Hoary (talk) 04:04, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaguarnik: MOS:APPROXDATE indicates you should use "(before 1480 – 17 October 1528)". GoingBatty (talk) 04:37, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both! Jaguarnik (talk) 05:52, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

i need to add pictures with my articles but i can't. Please reply as soon as you can. I need advice ASAP Miley (talk) 11:41, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What's the urgency? Wikipedia has no deadlines. New accounts cannot directly upload images to Wikipedia itself. If the copyright of the image is compatible with Wikipedia's, allowing for reuse for any purpose with attribution, you may upload it to Commons. (note that the vast majority of images found on the internet are not suitable as such). If the image has a more restrictive copyright, please visit Files for Upload. 331dot (talk) 11:45, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Divalicio It isn't clear whether you mean that you have already identified a suitable picture on Wikimedia Commons and need advice about how to incorporate it into an article. Instructions for doing that are at Help:Pictures. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:14, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Site with Multiple fake links to ads...Who do I contact[edit]

There is a site, Space Nursing Society,

where I see I am the 2nd person correcting links that go to an ad. Even thought the site it titled Space Nursing, it redirects to an ad. Who do I report this to? Starlighsky (talk) 12:40, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Starlighsky I made your link a standard internal link, we don't need the whole url. If the website at issue is ad supported, that's fine, unless I'm not understanding you. 331dot (talk) 12:44, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure what you are referring to. The Space Nursing Association no longer has a website. A version of it is redirecting traffic to what appears to be a restaurant. It adds a cookie that starts with the letter 'z', making it more difficult for people to spot on their computers.
Is there a way I can contact cybersecurity here? Starlighsky (talk) 12:49, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Starlighsky There is no "cybersecurity" department here; just volunteer editors. If the link is no longer working properly, it should be removed. I would do so but I shortly will be unavailable. 331dot (talk) 12:51, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I removed both suspicious links before I mentioned this issue.
I recall that there is place to report cybersecurity issues,
but I can't seem to locate it. Starlighsky (talk) 13:09, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Now that the link has been removed, there is no further issue- but perhaps you are referring to Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam? 331dot (talk) 13:12, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am the 2nd person in the article's history to report the link issue.
It appears to be an issue of repairs being undone.
I could be wrong.
Either way, here is history and two different people correcting faulty links:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Space_Nursing_Society&action=history Starlighsky (talk) 13:17, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that the society has abandoned two different websites and the web host has reused the domains for advertising. Therefore the article has needed updating twice, but no repairs have been undone. TSventon (talk) 13:29, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks Starlighsky (talk) 16:13, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Starlighsky if you want some background, you could look at Wikipedia:Link rot. TSventon (talk) 00:53, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Starlighsky (talk) 01:08, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hieroglyphs[edit]

I would like some information about egyptian hyroglyphics. Do you have any information on why there are so many bird symbols carved into stone wall. What is the meaning of the falcon, vulture, other small birds JulieKDisco (talk) 15:25, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See Egyptian hieroglyphs for an introduction and List of Egyptian hieroglyphs for a tabulated list. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 15:34, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you have further questions on Egyptian hieroglyphs, you could ask at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities or Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language. TSventon (talk) 15:44, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Repeated Vandalization of Multiple Railway Related Wiki Articles[edit]

I have noticed some vandalism at China Railways SY. There appears to be someone who keeps repeatedly editing the page to include erroneous information. Namely they keep adding references to the builders being Ford Motor Company and/or "British Rail Vehicle" with them removing the hyperlinks to the article about the actual builder, Tangshan Railway Vehicle CRRC Tangshan as well as changing the date range in which the locomotive was built.

I haven't looked further into what else they may have been adding, but it appears this has been ongoing for a while, with most of their edits being tagged with some variation of "Shane's Work Train" or "Shane Bone" or other things along that manner, the meaning of which I do not know.

This appears to be the last version of the article that contained the correct builder and dates in which the locomotives were being built. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=China_Railways_SY&oldid=1169429259

Would an editor please assist me with fixing it? Thank you, 173.28.207.94 (talk) 20:17, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I looked into it more, it appears these edits span more than just the single page China Railways SY
There appears to be repeated, nonsensical edits from this Static IP on other railway related pages that also have a similar tag of "Shane Bone's Work Train", though all others have been reverted at this time.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/37.205.60.165
They also appear to be using a mobile device with a dynamic IP that changes in between their edits, making it hard to see if there are any more instances of this on other pages, though these edits are still tagged with "Shane Bone's Work Train" or a something similar. 173.28.207.94 (talk) 21:18, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As of 9/18/23, 5 AM UTC the vandalism seems to have been removed thanks to the work of @Phuzion after I brought up the issue at the Wikipedia IRC help channel.
I thank them greatly for their assistance.
Still, I would advise anyone who happens to read this to keep an eye out for any new edits made by the same vandal on other railroad equipment related pages, they seem to be a repeat offender. 173.28.207.94 (talk) 05:54, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This IP range has been blocked. If you continue to notice vandalism to these articles, please feel free to report to WP:AIV or on IRC as you did previously. Thanks for your help! Phuzion (talk) 16:22, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to reduce size of non-free image?[edit]

I uploaded File:Kenshi Yonezu - Peace Sign.jpg and File:Kenshi Yonezu - Spinning Globe.jpg under fair use but they're too big. How do I get the bot to reduce the size like it did here? ayakanaa ( t · c ) 21:14, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ayakanaa: Looking at the history of File:Kenshi Yonezu - Pale Blue.jpg that you kindly provided, you could add {{Non-free reduce}} to the other files to get the bot's attention. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:28, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I have done so and will keep this in mind for the future. ayakanaa ( t · c ) 01:57, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
