New accounts cannot directly create articles; you need to create and submit a draft via the Article Wizard or Articles for Creation. Search box cache

When I click on the search on Wikipedia or any sister projects (like Commons) a list a suggestions always appears including "War and Peace", "Ritsurin garden" and some other things I have searched in the past. I have cleared my browser's cache and deleted cookies and saved information for all sites, but I still get this same list. Is there some sort of cache associated with my account or something that I need to clear? Photos of Japan (talk) 11:19, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

@Photos of Japan This will be your browser, not anything to do with Wikipedia. Try using a search engine to look for instructions about removing them. e.g. "delete search history chrome" if that's the bowser you are using. On some browsers (including Edge, which I use), you can hover over these suggestions and a "trash" icon appears which allows you to delete the suggestions one-by-one. Thank you for the reply. I am using Google Chrome. I deleted my visit to the page on Ritsurin Garden but it did nothing. I have the same problem as this person but when I follow the suggestion and hit my down arrow and try to delete the suggestions it does nothing. @Photos of Japan Two more suggestions: 1) Switch to the default vector 22 skin. I only get these suggestions when I use the vector 2010 skin. 2) when I see the suggestions, there is also a small "x" at the top right of the list with (on hover-over) a prompt that says "Don't show saved information" which I can click to switch it off. I think that this must mean it is a Wikipedia function but one that isn't present in all skins. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:19, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

@Mike Turnbull Thank you for the suggestions. I tried all of the skins and some of them had the suggestions and some didn't, but I didn't get the small "x" in any of them. I have uploaded a photo of what I see which shows how I basically have two different suggestion lists. The first one I get when I first click the box and don't do any typing, the suggestions have been static for months. The second is the normal suggestions list which changes as I type. Messing around with things I came across a weird way to change the first list. When I searched for my edit summaries I discovered that my list of recommendations changed to whatever I searched for. So now I have ""sand, add, pull, iodine, one, edit" as my recommendations every time I click on the search box since I randomly searched my edit summaries for those 6 words. I wonder if the suggestions are related to toolforge somehow. Photos of Japan (talk) 10:11, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

The fact that we are seeing slightly different ways the suggestions are presented convinces me that the behaviour is due to the browser. When I edit articles in the source editor, for example, I get a whole bunch of suggested edit summaries that I've used before: I find that very helpful. Edge and Chrome have similar engines but different detailed implementations. I think you would need to ask an online Chrome forum how to control the lists you are seeing, or delve into the settings menu and submenus. It could even be the case that Chrome keeps these lists associated with your Google account. Try using Wikipedia from a different device. If the new device doesn't have the suggestions, then they must be stored locally. If they travel with you, they are stored in the Google cloud. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:42, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Templates in other languages

How do I find a template in another language. In particular I'm interested in Citation needed in German, but no search I've performed produced any result. Gciriani (talk) 16:04, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

@Gciriani, if you can't find an article with an example to look at/copy, the next best thing would probably be to ask at that Wikipedia's version of the help desk, if they have one. German Wikipedia's help desk seems to be here. 57.140.16.29 (talk) 16:26, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

There's a real irony lurking in that discussion and vote you linked, which turned out Oppose by 183–76. In order to make an argument about how horrible things would become at de-wiki if they allowed a {{citation needed}} template over there, they pointed to how bad things were at English Wikipedia, and god forbid they should imitate our disorder. For example, the #1 responder in the "Opposed" column (#1 of 183, here) gave as his example of en-wiki chaos, our article "Pilatus Aircraft", pointing to the 30 Aug 2012 version (rev. 509918320), which, admittedly, was pretty ugly, littered as it was with "citation needed" templates all over the place. But that ugly revision was already five months old when Armin wrote his comment at 08:29, 19. Jan. 2013, and by that time, in rev. 533563703 of the article, all of the numerous "citation needed" links had been resolved with citations. In other words, the template worked, and the verifiability of the article improved as a result. Nobody pointed that out at the time, and the tag was roundly defeated, but I find it pretty funny now that the poster-child example of en-wiki ugliness by "opposer #1" in fact worked like a charm. VRT hiccup

I have been trying to correct an error by the WP:VRT that Alfred Neumann emailed about. On Sep 17, 4:09 AM Central Time U.S., which I believe was 9:09 AM UTC, regarding ticket #2023091410010181. There have been no responses to emails to correct the problem. The only result of the effort to donate copyrighted material seems to be to tag File:20230304 Carla Vernón and Antonio Vernón at Pizzeria Lola 02.jpg for deletion in 30 days without explanation as to how to correct that status. The donated file has not been confirmed or denied to my knowledge. Can someone respond to our emails?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 18:23, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

TonyTheTiger, Commons:File:20230304 Carla Vernón and Antonio Vernón at Pizzeria Lola 02.jpg is on Commons not Wikipedia, so this is probably the wrong helpdesk. The tag says "For an update on the issue, please contact the user who added this template to the page, or someone else with a VRTS account, or the VRT noticeboard", so you could ask Commons:User:Krd who added the template or Commons:Commons:Volunteer Response Team/Noticeboard. How to provide "page needed"

The article I am editing has following a block quote. I know the page number. It happens to be "1". I just don't know how to replace the "page needed" with the right markup. Also, how could I have efficiently found this information in the vast help universe of wikipedia. Pojoman (talk) 19:51, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

I think you just need to update the relevant citation to include the page number (how to do so will depend on the form of the citation) and then you can delete that template. I'm somewhat guessing since you didn't link to the article in question. :) DonIago (talk) 19:57, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

@Annaboatright7: NO! Wikipedia is not affiliated with any paid editing organization. Many or most for them are fraudulent. At least two organizations with names similar to that one are listed at Wikipedia:List of paid editing companies, and have been banned from editing Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 21:01, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

I am worried my account may be hacked

Language

Why is the page "Bipolar disorder", even if it's not a uniquely American topic (like, for example, American celebrities), written in American English? British English should be used for all topics that are neutral and do not directly relate to the United States of America. JackkBrown (talk) 21:08, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

Per WP:ENGVAR if the subject is not specific related to a national variety of English, it typically stays in the version of English it was initially written in unless there is a consensus to change it. Your idea would require changing that policy and subsequently, if accepted, changing millions of articles. Feel free to try to work to change the policy, but it will be a long, hard process- and probably won't work unless you are a master persuader. 331dot (talk) 21:13, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

To be crystal clear, JackkBrown, there is no preference for or against British English in any articles about any topics other than those primarily related to the United Kingdom.
