Deleting Help Desk content?[edit]

As I am unaware of the policies on this, and since the editor I have come into conflict with obviously has much more experience than me, could anyone point me to policies on deleting Help Desk content? Industrial Insect (talk) 00:53, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WP:TPNO covers it. A screed of attacks with no question isn't something for the help desk to handle. Better to just quietly remove it. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 01:12, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I apologize for trying to bring doubt to your edit. Industrial Insect (talk) 01:14, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The same incorrect information keeps getting added to article, despite corrections.[edit]

The table for theater productions keeps getting changed to director throughout the table, despite the correction and explanation. It is an important issue because it creates unreliable information and takes away the credit from the actual directors. Here is the incorrect information added after it was already corrected: Incorrect information keeps getting added to this article, despited corrections. Starlighsky (talk) 03:56, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Starlighsky: You should discuss this on the talk page for that article. If you can't reach consensus with the other editor(s), then see WP:DR for guidance on how to resolve the dispute. RudolfRed (talk) 04:11, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is simply incorrect information, which is readily verified by reliable sources. Can an administrator take a look at this article's edit of a table of information? Starlighsky (talk) 04:14, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry but the help desk is not a place to solve editing disputes. An admin won't get involved in an admin capacity unless there is some violation of policies. I second RudolfRed, check WP:DISPUTERESOLUTION. Also, check WP:CONSENSUS. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 04:26, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. Starlighsky (talk) 12:22, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see no discussion at all on Talk:Edward Royce (director), which is the place where this should be resolved in the first instance. ColinFine (talk) 12:25, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Here it in the article's history. The information is incorrect. It is like bringing up that the earth is not flat on Talk, in my opinion:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Edward_Royce_(director)&diff=prev&oldid=1177710282 Starlighsky (talk) 14:55, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You have told us several times that the information is incorrect. Clearly other editors do not agree with you. Wikipedia works by consensus, and your job (if you wish to pursue this) is to win other editors round to your view - which you will not do by repeatedly asserting it and ignoring their thoughts.
Edit summaries are not a discussion.
Please read WP:BRD and WP:DR and then set out to achieve consensus.
(I am not saying that you are right or wrong: I am not interested in the specific argument, only in how it gets resolved). ColinFine (talk) 15:50, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
After I posted the concern, I added the issue to Talk asking for a consensus.
I was just expressing a concern because the implications of this type of change to my article is part of a bigger problem. I was just trying to help Wikipedia. Starlighsky (talk) 16:56, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that you refer to it as your article may also be a bigger problem. ColinFine (talk) 09:25, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I followed the instructions here and added the issue to the Talk page of the article and initiated the consensus process. That problem is resolved. I wrote the original article, which is why I used the word "my"...The article is no longer going to present itself as originally intended, but there is nothing I can do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Starlighsky (talkcontribs) 13:35, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple-image template with CSS image crop functionality?[edit]

Is there a template similar to Template:Multiple image that can provide the functionality of Template:CSS image crop, or a work-around that would help achieve such a result? Using images with slightly different aspect ratios for collages results in poor aesthetics, but manually cropping and uploading them as separate files will lead to a lot of clutter. --Paul_012 (talk) 07:42, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm nor sure whether this answers your quesrion – but User:Maproom/cropping has a gallery of pictures of Taraxacum flowers, all cropped. Maproom (talk) 14:15, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestion, but no it doesn't, as far as I can tell. The main use case I'm looking for is infobox image composition. --Paul_012 (talk) 16:40, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do I upload a photo to Wikipedia[edit]

How do I upload a photo to Wikipedia Xxcletus90 (talk) 08:26, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Xxcletus90 The devil is in the details, care to give us some? For a start, pretty much any random picture you find online is copyrighted and can't be used on Wikipedia. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:49, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

About Font[edit]

Why Wikipedia doesn't allow Fancy Fonts? Like in some companies their brand names have different style. Sayeed2k (talk) 11:47, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sayeed2k Wikipedia is intended to be a neutrally written encyclopedia. Displaying company names here has no relation to company marketing or branding efforts. 331dot (talk) 11:52, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"Fancy Fonts" with capitals sounds like a proper name but I guess you just mean "fancy" fonts like non-standard fonts in general. If you have in mind how we mention brands in articles then the guideline is Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Trademarks. We are an encyclopedia made for the readers and we care more about readability than how a company tries to get attention. We often mention different companies and products together and odd variations in fonts and capitalizations would be annoying. A brand article may briefly mention how the brand name is stylized and there may be a logo. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:01, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Politburo Composition wikitable feedback[edit]

So, I wanted to create a wikitable for an article on the SED's Politburo and I came up with this, adopted from the CCP PSC wikitables:

Composition[edit]

Members of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party elected at the 10th session of the Central Committee after the XI. SED party conference (8 November 1989)
Rank Name 14th PB NVR SC Birth PM Concurrent offices
Chair Egon Krenz Yes Chair Chair 1937 1955
Member Wolfgang Herger No Yes No 1935 1957
Member Hans-Joachim Böhme Yes No No 1929 1946
  • Party offices
Member Werner Eberlein Yes Yes No 1919 1946
  • Party offices
    • Chairman, Central Party Control Commission
Member Hans Modrow No No No 1928 1949
Member Wolfgang Rauchfuß No No No 1931 1951
Member Gerhard Schürer Candidate No No 1921 1948
Member Günter Schabowski Yes No No 1929 1952
Member Siegfried Lorenz Yes No No 1930 1946
Member Heinz Keßler Yes Yes No 1920 1946
Member Werner Jarowinsky Yes No No 1927 1946
Candidate Johannes Chemnitzer No No No 1929 1946
Candidate Günter Sieber No No No 1930 1948
Candidate Hans-Joachim Willerding No No No 1952 1971
Candidate Margarete Müller Candidate No Yes 1931 1951
  • Head, LPG Plant Production
Candidate Inge Lange Candidate No No 1927 1946
Candidate Werner Walde Candidate No No 1926 1946

This works, but I'm not quite sure. Especially in three areas: 1. Making the difference between Candidate members and full members more clear. 2. Several Candidate members, Lange and Walde, basically left immediately after being elected, on 9 and 10 November respectively; how should I include that? 3. I think the sorting in general if off, I think it should be sorted like this: Chair, then Members, then Candidates, after that previous PB incumbents, then NVR members, SC members etc., after that Candidates that were Candidates in the previous PB. But I don't know how to do that. 4. There is a serious lack of sources in regard to the exact portfolio some of the Secretaries held. Rauchfuß, Sieber and Willending are all "Secretaries", but their responsibility? Maxwhollymoralground (talk) 14:53, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Maxwhollymoralground: Hi there! Content and presentation discussions such as this would be best held on the article's talk page. GoingBatty (talk) 15:45, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: The article doesn't exist yet 😅 Maxwhollymoralground (talk) 17:13, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Maxwhollymoralground: Well, that explains why you didn't provide a link to it! trout Self-trout. GoingBatty (talk) 17:53, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Help with editing templates.[edit]

I was attempting to edit the Asian Cuisine category in order to remove some red links. However, when I pressed the edit button, it instead took me to an "Asian Topic" template. Does anyone know where to go from here? Industrial Insect (talk) 15:57, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Link to where you are really looking? Category:Asian cuisine does not have an "Asian Topic" template (whatever that is). It does have:
{{Cat main|Asian cuisine}}
{{commonscat|Cuisine of Asia}}
but that's it. So, where are you seeing this "Asian Topic" template?
Trappist the monk (talk) 16:11, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I got there through Chinese cuisine. After clicking edit on the category, it instead took me to edit Template:Asian topic. Industrial Insect (talk) 16:14, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I feel like I'm having to pull your teeth out to get a complete answer. Always link to exactly where you are encountering the problem so that editors here don't have to pull teeth. Are you saying that you visited the Chinese cuisine article and at the bottom there found a collapsed navbox labeled 'Asian cuisine'? Did you then click the 'E' (edit) link (at the left) which took you to Template:Asian topic in edit mode? If you want to remove the red links from that navbox, Template:Asian topic is the correct place to do that. Remember that redlinks aren't all bad; if there is the possibility of an article for the redlinked topic, write one.
Trappist the monk (talk) 17:00, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is what happened. Thank you. Industrial Insect (talk) 17:13, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Industrial Insect: The code in Chinese cuisine#External links says {{Asian topic|| cuisine}}. {{Asian topic}} is a general template to easily make a navbox with similar links to articles about a specific topic in all Asian countries, in this case cuisine. Do NOT edit the template. It will affect many aticles about other topics. See Template:Asia topic#Altering the link used for a specific entity for how to change the template call, but I suggest you leave it alone. Red links in systematic navboxes like this are allowed, and around 60 articles have the same {{Asian topic|| cuisine}}, making the same red links in all those articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:24, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Industrial Insect: On second look, {{Asian topic}} hasn't implemented the link override feature so the links would be hard to change. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:23, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

re-naming or titling of an entry[edit]

Hello. I was wondering please how to go about re-naming a page that is on your wikipedia lexicon. please? As I am not an editor and it was unlikely that I will become one , how can I put in a request to rename a page that has its' origins with myself? By that I mean that there is a mathematical theme to the page but is credited by a misnomer. Although my intention in the past was such that the misnomer was ok, today I would prefer otherwise please? Many thanks 2A02:C7F:2D35:A100:DDB5:53FA:1FEF:40AC (talk) 19:38, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Merely by participating here you are an "editor". Please see Requested Moves for information on retitling an article. 331dot (talk) 20:14, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You should also know that the titles of articles usually go by the name they are referred to commonly in reliable sources. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:00, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
