something for hillary jocelyn wolf.[edit]

when are you going to say age 47 at the bio on this site for hillary jocelyn wolf?

because she had her birthday on wednesday and i can't believe you haven't corrected that info at her bio. Robby mercier (talk) 01:03, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Robby mercier: The age in the infobox is updated automatically, but sometimes there is lag and caching. Hillary Wolf says age 47 now. RudolfRed (talk) 01:13, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Robby mercier: Her age shows correctly here. Please see WP:PURGE. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:31, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
yeah i saw that you updated the info at her bio to say age 47 for her, thanks.
because i really like that one movie hillary wolf is in home alone and i was born in 1977 along with her. Robby mercier (talk) 15:53, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Distillers Canada listing[edit]

how does our company appear on the distillers list as other do? Tumbleweed Spirits (talk) 01:47, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When your company is notable enough to have an article on Wikipedia, then somebody else may eventually add it. Wikipedia is not a business directory, and shouldn't be used for self-promotion. miranda :3 02:19, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. If you write about yourself, you'll have a [conflict of interest], and this is something that should be avoided. Consequently, someone else will need to write about Tumbleweed Spirits. And they will need to find and use reliable sources. Hu Nhu (talk) 02:49, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Tumbleweed Spirits: You may find this FAQ useful. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:26, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thank you for the information 2001:569:7477:7A00:B9A0:688:4A27:CB18 (talk) 21:16, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reference 200 is in red, please fix, I cannot and I have tried many times. Thank you in advance.175.38.42.62 (talk) 10:23, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The "journal" field is missing(you used the "journal" template as a reference). I don't know how to fix that because I am not familiar with the reference. I would highly suggest that you use "Preview" before clicking Publish changes so you can detect these issues before publishing. I would also suggest that you consider working with a mentor directly(see this page). 331dot (talk) 10:36, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Appears fixed. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:35, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

13Joker13[edit]

13Joker13 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) has been recently blocked for sockpuppetry. Seems he belongs to a long list of accounts here. There are multiple articles created by user here and I have noticed this particular user does a lot of blatant copying of Google Translate on Georgian wiki articles.

Do these articles need to be reviewed and if so, where should I bring this up?

- Imcdc Contact 11:01, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the articles have Georgian-language sources, so WT:WikiProject Georgia would be a good place to start. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:24, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Someone probbably needs to go over all of them and figure out if Help:Translation#License_requirements was followed for all of them. The list seems small enough that someone can do this by hand, following the procedure at WP:RIA if nessesary. If the case were larger I would have suggested WP:CCI. Phone layout[edit]

Hi,Wikipedia on my PC still looks normal, however, on my phone, since yesterday, it looks way more zoomed out than i thought, what happened? NerdyLazar (talk) 14:24, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

NerdyLazar you may be accidentally requesting the desktop version of Wikipedia. Most browsers have options to request the desktop or mobile version, how to toggle this setting depends on the browser.
You may also want to check the zoom level on the page (usually a magnifying glass). Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 14:26, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube as a reference[edit]

There is a video on YouTube to which confirms a persons ethnicity, by their own admission, and I wished to acknowledge this under the category section on the respective person's Wikipedia page. Would this be acceptable? Using YouTube as a reference citation, more so to the fact there's very little information on the said person's page. Is it a valid source? Many thanks. Bartallen2 (talk) 15:55, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Provided the video is plausibly genuine, you can cite it as a self-published source. Note that ethnicity is often controversial, so I would tend to advise couching it as "X self-describes as Y" rather than "X is Y". You should also consider whether it is of sufficient weight to put into the article: do they make a big thing of it in the video, or is it just said in passing?
If you put this in the article, then you can probably add them to the relevant category.
It would be easier to answer if you told us who the person is. ColinFine (talk) 17:20, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

redirect for Annals of the International Communication Association?[edit]

"Annals of the International Communication Association" is a publication of the International Communication Association. The publication does not have its own article, but there is a Wikipedia article on the organization itself. Would it be sensible to have a redirect from the name of the publication to the organization? I presume the redirect should go to International Communication Association#Journals. Fabrickator (talk) 17:48, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Fabrickator: Yes, we often do that. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:01, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Title name of an actor is wrong but can’t edit it[edit]

hi,I want to edit the tote entry for Margot Robbie in the Japanese edition Wikipedia. Margot Robbie is an Australian actor who was the main actor for the film Barbie. The very first person who transcriber her name into Japanese got it wrong, pronouncing the silent ‘t’. The correct name is マーゴー. I could change them but the title name. It still shows マーゴット.Her name is wrongly written and said with the silent ‘t’ all over Japan, in news media because Japanese people aren’t familiar with the silent ‘t’. Minipotatochips (talk) 19:02, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry there were a few typing errors and sorry I didn’t proof read it. The very first line should say, ‘I want to change the title entry’ Minipotatochips (talk) 19:04, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Minipotatochips: Since the different language Wikipedias are administered differently, you will need to address this on the Japanese language Wikipedia. It has its own separate help desk. you can find it listed under the "languages" tab at the top of this page. -Arch dude (talk) 19:14, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thank you. I will do that. Minipotatochips (talk) 19:43, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Minipotatochips: if you don't speak Japanese, you could try ja:Wikipedia:Help for Non-Japanese Speakers. TSventon (talk) 19:24, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do speak Japanese, but thank you for info, too! Minipotatochips (talk) 19:44, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You do indeed need to take this up at ja-wiki. But two general points I will make: one is that you change the title of an article by moving the article, in any Wikipedia. The other is that if in fact she is generally known as マーゴット in Japan, as you indicate, then surely that should be the name of the article? ColinFine (talk) 19:53, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that makes sense. It was the unfortunate case of someone making a mistake and nobody picked it up before media started to follow the suit, only because they didn’t know better. I hope Margot herself or her agent clarifies it. Thanks for your insight! Minipotatochips (talk) 19:58, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So eone took my name off the site of original elder pilates instructors Maja wollman-pilates by maja[edit]

please, help me get my name back on wikipedia, maja wollman-pilates by maja. Someone took me off a few years ago and only 3 of us original pilate-elder instructors left living of this generation. 96.46.219.36 (talk) 19:49, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Maja. I can't find an article which is a list of pilates instructors. Was there an article about you? (I can't find evidence of it). If there was never an article about you, then your name should not have appeared on a list, as Wikipedia lists are not lists of things in the world, but lists of Wikipedia articles about notable things in the world notable in Wikipedia's special sense of (roughly) "There is enough independent material, reliably published, about this subject to base an article on". ColinFine (talk) 20:03, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Name was inserted here in 2011, and subsequently removed with an explanation in an edit summary in 2018. It cannot be restored with out a reliable citation. That said, the whole paragraph is uncited. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:24, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Closing split discussion[edit]

Hurricane Ian has had a dormant spilt discussion and I am not quite sure where to request closure. If someone could close it and direct me where to go for future reference, I will be happy. ✶Quxyz 21:45, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Quxyz: Read the guidance at Wikipedia:Closure requests and make the request there if it is needed. RudolfRed (talk) 22:46, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Several reference format Qs[edit]

Hi! I have a few questions about formatting some specific types of references/citations and source situations. Thank you in advance!

  • What is the appropriate way to cite a section in a book that was originally published in an older book but then revised? Situation here is an "Annotated chronology and exhibition history" for an artist, originally published in his retrospective book in 2005 with two named authors. It was then revised, expanded, and republished in 2018 in a new book edited by one of the original authors (plus a separate second editor), with a note at the end naming the original contributors as well as noting a separate, third party (a gallery not associated with the publication, no named author) being responsible for the research for a specific section of the chronology/timeline. original publication: Binstock & Webb (2005 in Binstock, ed.), second publication: 2018 revised/expanded, in Binstock & Helfenstein ed., with note crediting Binstock & Webb for original pub. and Mnuchin Gallery for researching the years 2005-2018
  • How do you format a citation for a news source "quoted in" something else when you can't access the original underlying source? I can format both the news citation and the book citation it was quoted in, but I don't know how or if I'm supposed to combine them. Noland in Washingtonian (1965), quoted in book Binstock ed. (2005).
  • How do you correctly format the "Volume" in a news citation when the volume is defined as "115th year" without "v." in the Library of Congress database? I'm citing several old issues of The Washington Star, which was published under 5 different names in the 60s/70s, and one of those interstitial pub. periods (march-april 1975) didn't include volume numbers because it was only published under that name for a month.
  • Lastly (thank you for your help if you're still reading this lol), does anyone know how to correctly anonymize a NewsBank URL? I have access through my library, and I can re-format the URL to get it out of the library's walled garden but I don't know if there are any other identifying details still retained in the URL because it's such a complicated string.

(edit: clarifying that I'm talking basic citation style 1 templates) --19h00s (talk) 23:37, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Answers:
  1. Cite the source that you consulted. The purpose of a citation is to provide sufficient detail for a reader to go to the source that you consulted. Leave it to the source to explain bibliographic history, if any.
  2. Same as first sentence in #1; if you have not read the quoted newspaper article, you may not cite it
  3. If the newspaper doesn't name a volume don't include |volume= – making up stuff to fill empty parameters is a sin against readers
  4. Without you show the url, I can offer no suggestions about it.
Trappist the monk (talk) 23:47, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1. I read it in both, and I will be citing both versions because there is information that was removed from the first to the second (specific details about how the artist met his first wife, presumably removed because he married a new woman the year the second version was published. they left in the basic facts that they married but removed how the two met). Also my question here is more about how to format the credits for the citation when citing the second version - how to include the credit to the original author who was not part of the rewrite, and credit to the gallery who gathered the second set of details but provided no author/contributor name.
2. Makes sense.
3. Not making stuff up - Library of Congress lists it as "115th year" in place of volume, and that is printed on the front of the newspaper under the title where preceding and following volumes of the paper said "volume [number]," which I confirmed by looking at the newspaper myself, not citing via someone else. They published under "xxxth year" instead of "volume" for several years under several different names.
4. Links like this.
Thank you! 19h00s (talk) 00:01, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Answers:
  1. cite both separately. For each source use the names that that source supplies; it is not the purpose of a citation to list the bibliographic details of all (or any) previous editions of the source. cs1|2 templates are designed to cite single sources; attempting to cite multiple sources with a single template just creates mush
  2. cs1|2 does not have a way to identify a source as '115th year'. If the newspaper doesn't say 'Volume 115' you should not interpret '115th year' to mean 'Volume 115' (doing so would be making stuff up)
  3. urls are not required; I don't see a way in that url to get 'round the paywall; or, you can leave the url and mark it with |url-access=subscription
Trappist the monk (talk) 00:22, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1-3. Thank you!
4. Yep that was the plan re: access, Newsbank is the only database with digital versions. But does it look like that link has any identifying strings or codes in the url? I can't tell, and I just want to be sure I correctly dissociated (edit: dissassociated; laughing hard this typo tbh) it from my library card account.
Thank you again! 19h00s (talk) 00:40, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That the paywall asks you to select a library name and enter a card number, I would guess that there isn't much personal info in that url. Of course, I could be wrong ... Did you ask Newsbank?
