Removing a bullet from a template[edit]

Can someone please help me remove the bullet that appears after the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award link in {{Men's college basketball award navbox}}? See how there is no bullet after Sporting News in the "National players of the year" subsection - that's how I'd like it to look. Thank you. SportsGuy789 (talk) 22:29, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking into this and it's revealing some very odd quirks of navbox behavior, I'll post a more detailed answer here in a bit. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:26, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So... appears to be a bug in either module:navbox or Wikimedia, from what I can tell. For a short example, see the case below:
Viewing this in Parsoid (a newer/experimental wikitext renderer) renders it correctly.
So I should probably bring this to template talk:navbox (or perhaps VPT) and see what they have to say. As for temporary fixes, switching the order of the "player awards" and "head coach awards" sections might fix it, but that's speculation. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:37, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I started a section at Template talk:navbox. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:47, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for helping dive into this. Markup and code is pretty out of my expertise, and the way the navbox layout is currently set up is how it should look (regarding the comments in the linked talk page discussion about how there ought not to be a blank space... deleting the blank space screws up the line break in the navbox). In an "explain it to me like I'm a n00b" way, what is being looked into to fix the bullet point? SportsGuy789 (talk) 03:59, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Finding articles which cite a specific book[edit]

Is there any place I can search a title and find all Wikipedia articles with that title in References? Schaffe99 (talk) 00:46, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. But simply searching for the book title (and, if this is too commonly occurring a string, supplementing this with the author's surname), usually brings a result that I find easy to use. -- Hoary (talk) 01:23, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Schaffe99 See H:INSOURCE for a way to find text within the source code of articles. That won't guarantee the hits will be within references but if you are lucky and your book title is unique, the output should be close to what you need. ISBNs can also be searched that way. Questions of what citations to use.[edit]

Hello, I'm just asking if one of these citations (below) is reliable and independent. Please type in your opinions and reply below to help me on what citations below for me to use for this article. Thanks!

List of citations I am wondering if they are reliable or not.

• TechRadar • SuperCar Blondie • Motor Authority • Motor1.com • The Verge • Green Car Reports • Car and Driver • Motor Trend ⚒️★MinecraftPlayer★321⚒️ Let's Chat! 01:33, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

MinecraftPlayer321, go to Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources and look for each of these there. Then go to Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. For each of the eight that didn't appear in "Perennial sources", feed its title into "Search the noticeboard archives", and see what you get. If what you find is unclear, or if the source isn't mentioned at all, then ask about it at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. (NB they're potential sources, which you might cite; if you cited one, the result would be a "citation".) -- Hoary (talk) 01:56, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MinecraftPlayer321, as far as I know, The Verge is considered a reliable source to use. You can check whether your questioned sources are deprecated or reliable per WP:RS/P#Sources, what Hoary said. 2001:EE0:4BE2:4ED0:9496:F804:F0D4:C864 (talk) 02:08, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks you both! ⚒️★MinecraftPlayer★321⚒️ Let's Chat! 04:02, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MinecraftPlayer321: I have some experience and knowledge with editing automotive topics. Motor Trend and Car and Driver are as independent and reliable as they come; they are rock-solid sources. They have been around a long time, and have proper editorial oversight; I have used them extensively with no problems. I recognize the names of a few other sources listed but haven't had enough experience with them to vouch for their reliability. You may wish to raise this matter at WP:RSN for generalized community input, or WT:CAR for specialized input from people who are likely more interested and knowledgeable about cars. Numbering of Endnotes[edit]

I am writing an article for Wikipedia called British Prime Minister's Homes. It's in my sandbox if you want to access it.

My issue is this: I have written it in WORD first and then I have imported it to my sandbox for further editing. Everything is working fine EXCEPT: when I import the endnotes the numbering changes from 1,2,3,etc in WORD to i,ii,iii, etc in my Wiki sandbox. I have spent all this evening trying to figure out how to change the numbering without success. BTW it is easy to change the numbering in WORD. ~~~ Terence (talk) 02:12, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Almost everything may be "working fine", Terence, but the formatting of its references is completely incompatible with that of Wikipedia. I mean, the difference between 1, 2, 3 and i, ii, iii is a minor matter compared with the fact that your references, however numbered, won't work. (Wikipedia and MS Word were not designed for each other.) See Help:Referencing for beginners with citation templates and the other help pages to which it links. (You've worked out how to use internal links, though; congratulations on that.) -- Hoary (talk) 04:26, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So this means I have to redo all my end notes one by one in Wiki?
Thanks for the VERY prompt reply. . Terence (talk) 15:30, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You use a limited number of source books and many references within each one. The style of citations that suits this is to use the {{sfn}} template. See that link for the details. And, yes, this does mean redoing them all. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:36, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editing a page without a physical source[edit]

I wanted to add some information to a page on Wikipedia regarding a village my family grew up in, but I obviously don't have a physical source online and want to help them add some information to it. How could I go about adding some information to the page? 2601:18D:4800:5900:D4B8:20DF:A3A1:4E3F (talk) 03:51, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

do you have a reliable source? if no, don't add it. ltbdl (talk) 03:54, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As ltbdl indicates, the source must be reliable, but it doesn't have to be online. A book from a major publisher would probably do; a book published by a local enthusiast, or the local historical society, probably wouldn't. ColinFine (talk) 11:13, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing a YouTube video[edit]

There is a video on YouTuber to which confirms a persons ethnicity (Star Wars Theory), by their own admission, and I wished to acknowledge this under the category section on the respective person's Wikipedia page. Would this be acceptable? As another Wikipedia user has reverted the addition. Using YouTube as a reference citation, more so to the fact there's very little information on the said person's page. Many thanks. Bartallen2 (talk) 04:12, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, there being little reliable sourcing on a page does not mean it is acceptable to lower the bar for reliability. I would be wary of adding these claims, though it's likely fine to use a primary source for them, because they might be considered undue. Is it truly important enough to be in their article? Sometimes so, sometimes not. Remsense 04:28, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bartallen2 Adding it as a category only, no. Categories should be obvious from text in the article, see WP:CATV. On citing Youtube in general, see WP:RSPYT. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:41, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the Star Wars Theory article, even if the source checks out, adding a "Personal life" or whatever section just to add "He is [whatever ethnicity]" doesn't strike me as a good idea. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:51, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Btw, I've never heard of this guy, and I'm skeptical about WP-articles on youtubers in general, but with coverage like [1], I get it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:13, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Does this count?[edit]

So I was looking on Stereogum and I found a song that is known as a "glam quoting classic". Would I put that song as glam rock? Iamthegoat524 (talk) 04:50, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Without knowing the specific song and its content, it's impossible to be sure, but I don't think it can be applied as a general principle. Some rock songs utilise or quote music from classical composers (examples: A Whiter Shade of Pale, Nut Rocker) – that doesn't make them classical. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 176.24.45.226 (talk) 05:30, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
the song is pump it up by elvis costello Iamthegoat524 (talk) 06:11, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Having lived through the Glam rock era, and having just re-listened to the song, I have to say that it does not seem particularly "glam-rockish" to me. But then, what is the sound of Glam rock – it was a diversely sourced and influenced movement and more defined by the appearance and attitudes of its performers, and in those respects I never thought of Elvis Costello as "Glam". Others may have different opinions. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 176.24.45.226 (talk) 08:07, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Caps for headings[edit]

I recently edited an article (see below) and part of that edit included capitalizing the words in a heading. Someone else changed the caps back to lower case and said that "we try to minimise (sic) caps where possible." I'm confused. Capitalizing headings is a basic rule of English as far as I know. Is there a special rule for Wikipedia? If so, why? My mind is boggled. Any help would be appreciated.

https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/paper-format/headings Citizen127 (talk) 09:28, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Citizen127 The WP "rule" is
"Section headings should generally follow the guidance for article titles (above), and should be presented in sentence case (Funding of UNESCO projects in developing countries), not title case (Funding of UNESCO Projects in Developing Countries)." Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:50, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The rule Gråbergs Gråa Sång mentions is identified as the "Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Section headings". I read a lot of publications from many publishers, and each has their own manual of style that sometimes varies substantially from what I learned in school. In this case, Wikipedia is actually following the same standard that International Organization for Standardization uses. DMacks (talk) 10:02, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your prompt reply. I understand now, we are using the British imperial style, disappointing. Citizen127 (talk) 10:38, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is indeed a world-wide project, not a US thing. But if you want to stick it to the Brits, you can highlight our standardization of using 'sulfur' rather than 'sulphur'. DMacks (talk) 10:56, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why is it disappointing...? Qcne (talk) 15:37, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Another, inconsistency found at C[edit]

May worth a while, but would you mind help me a bit? Is it better to see the article ends by Its name in English is cee (pronounced /ˈs/), plural cees as most of the alphabetical pages indicate that. Not to be Its name in English is cee (pronounced /ˈs/). Cees is the plural form for this letter. as before edited. 2001:EE0:4BCA:7020:9496:F804:F0D4:C864 (talk) 11:22, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is no reason why the texts of different articles about related subjects (such as letters in an alphabet) have to have exactly the same form of wording: this is an imaginary 'rule' that you have invented yourself. If you want to, change it yourself: if anybody disagrees, they will say so, but it is very unlikely that anyone will care. {The poster formerly known as 897.81.230.195} 176.24.45.226 (talk) 18:28, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Citation help needed[edit]

I'm editing children's author A. A. Milne's article, and in the Introduction I see a need to explain in the very first sentence the difference between Milne's originally titled book Winnie-the-Pooh and the unhyphenated version of the spelling by which most modern readers would be familiar for the name of the eponymous main character, a bear.

I think this is the first Wikipedia citation I've made, or if I ever did one it was over a year ago, so I'd much appreciate some guidance before I make it.

  1. My proposed wording in the text is underlined. Alan Alexander Milne (/mɪln/; 18 January 1882 – 31 January 1956) was an English writer best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh, as well as for children's poetry. Although Milne used hyphens in the name of the book's main character the teddy bear and elsewhere, modern readers are likely to be more familiar with the unhyphenated version "Winnie the Pooh" popularised by Walt Disney's cartoon movie. FOOTNOTE NUMBER WOULD GO HERE
  2. How do I create a footnote in editing mode? I don't see an icon to do that in the editing options, including the link because that would seem merely a generic way to link a chunk of text with a specific web address. I need to put the following information in the footnote. I'm also not sure if the name of the website where the cited article can be found is acceptable without further explanation of it (which in this case is an affiliation with Disney). Foster, Tim. “Ten Things You May Not Know About Winnie the Pooh”. Celebrations. https://celebrationspress.com/2017/10/02/ten-things-you-may-not-know-about-winnie-the-pooh/#:~:text=Winnie%20the%20Pooh%20wasn't,a%20boon%20to%20typists%20everywhere. Retrieved 19 February 2024.

Augnablik (talk) 15:09, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The easiest way is to use {{efn}} or "extended footnote". Use {{efn|Although Milne used hyphens in the name of the book's main character the teddy bear and elsewhere, modern readers are likely to be more familiar with the hyphenless version "Winnie the Pooh" popularised by Walt Disney's cartoon movie.}} and then have a section at the bottom with the title "footnotes" and {{notelist}} as the only entry:
... as well as for children's poetry.[a] Martin of Sheffield
I've also added in a citation to show how to embed them in an EFN. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 15:26, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ Although Milne used hyphens in the name of the book's main character the teddy bear and elsewhere, modern readers are likely to be more familiar with the hyphenless version "Winnie the Pooh" popularised by Walt Disney's cartoon movie.[1]

Help with Removal of Paid article template on my page.[edit]

Edit count that does not need manual updating[edit]

Hey everyone,

I'm looking into adding an edit count to my user page that I do not need to update manually every time. Is there a way to do so, via a bot or some kind of wikicode?

Thanks! Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 15:25, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Cocobb8 Hello there! I am not sure if this is the correct information you may need, but I tried my best to understand: If you want to see your edit count, check out your history tab that is located on the right side of your user page, in between the "Edit Source" tab and the symbol 🖤. There, every time you edit your userpage, it will automatically put and show your recent and oldest edits. Hope that will help! - ⚒️★MinecraftPlayer★321⚒️ Let's Chat! 17:39, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Cocobb8 Hello again. I think that you're trying to say that you want to put a version of the history tab into your userpage. As far as I know, there is no template to put a version of the history tab into your userpage, but if there is a way, other editors, as well as I, will inform you immediately. For now, please wait patiently as other editors and I search for the solution. - ⚒️★MinecraftPlayer★321⚒️ Let's Chat! 17:56, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cocobb8 You don't say why you want your edit count on your user page. If it is just so you can see the count yourself, a much easier way to do that is to enable navigation popups at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. This feature does all sorts of useful stuff, including allowing editors to hover their cursor over your user name here to see immediately that you have 2126 edits since 1 March 2023. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:05, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull It's just so that my edit count userbox can update by itself as well as my service award. I guess it's ok if there's no way to do it :-) Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 14:04, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cocobb8 OK, then there are userboxes to do that. See Wikipedia:Userboxes/Wikipedia/Stats and tools/edit count. The one you probably want is {{User active edits}}. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:12, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, that doesn't update automatically, it just links to the tool which gives the count. So do other templates like {{User contrib}} and the one in {{Infobox Wikipedia user}}. There isn't one which does automatically update. Beware WP:EDITCOUNTITIS. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:32, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting a page[edit]

How does someone delete a Wiki page that was created about them without their authorization? This person is not famous, notable, celebrity or public figure. Thank you! MBoland71 (talk) 17:56, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

MBoland71 An article subject cannot grant or deny permission for their to be an article about them; any more than they could grant or deny permission for The New York Times to write about them. Articles are also not deleted merely due to the wishes of the subject. If you wish to argue that an article, or content in an article, violates Wikipedia policies(like the Biographies of Living Persons policy) or that the subject is not notable, there are ways to start a deletion discussion. 331dot (talk) 18:01, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Iammissnobody, regarding your template: there are ways to handle large numbers of names, but that's not it. @Mathglot, that's a good idea. i put some comments on the talk page of Template:Commander of the Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia - Wikipedia because Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia#Recipients list has the same thing. still new at editing and not sure how to handle duplication in two different templates. by the way, thanks for sharing the link, it's a very good starting point! nMyghet (talk) 11:13, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Iammissnobody, You're very welcome. Typically, duplicate content can be handled by transclusion, but there are lots of ways to do it. Have a look at WP:SELTRANS, and at template {{Excerpt}}. And maybe even how the documentation at different citation templates like {{cite book/doc}} or {{cite journal/doc}} both pick up the same words to describe parameters like |author=. (Hint: see {{Citation Style documentation#author}}.) If content is the same, but styling or presentation is different, there are ways. If you run into any issues, ping me from the template, and I'll try and help as I can. Mathglot (talk) 11:27, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a Wilkipedia entry[edit]

Years ago we submitted a Wilipedia entry - and it was rejected. I forget the details of why it was rejected, but we are a nonprofit organization and I think our entry was written too specifically to describe our project. We now want to submit an entry that is acceptable, but do not want to devote our resources to doing that without getting a clearer understanding of what is acceptable. 2603:301B:1CC8:4000:7413:A8B8:19A5:13A0 (talk) 22:02, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. WIkipedia is not for you to tell the world about your nonprofit, no matter how worthy it is: that is called promotion, and is forbidden anywhere on Wikipedia.
If your organization has been discussed in some depth by people wholly unconnected with it, published in reliable sources, then it is possible an article could be written, based on what those sources say about it (good and bad), not on what the organization says or wants to say.
You are discouraged from writing this article yourself, though not forbidden. If you choose to do so, you will be required to make the mandatory declaration of your status as a paid editor called for in our terms of service, and then you will need to use the articles for creation process to write a draft and have it reviewed.
Note that writing a new article is a challenging task for a new user even if they haven't a conflict of interest, and most editors who try it before they have spent several months learning how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles, have a miserable and frustrating experience.
Note also that if such an article is written (whether by you or not) you will not own it or control it, and it may end up containing material that you don't want it to. See an article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. ColinFine (talk) 22:13, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't attempt it. A corporation's description of itself properly belongs on the corporation's own website; and similarly an NPO's description of itself properly belongs on the NPO's own website. But if you're compelled (?) to attempt it, see "When your boss tells you to edit Wikipedia" and the Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. -- Hoary (talk) 22:17, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We did not "tell the world" about our nonprofit. We acted as an outside party describing the activity. The editor obviously thought otherwise. We have been around doing what we do for decades and I am sure eventually somebpdy will create a Wikipedia entry about what we do and what others do that might be similar. — Preceding unsigned comment added by User:2603:301B:1CC8:4000:7413:A8B8:19A5:13A0 (talkcontribs) 22:30, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

you're not an outside party if you're part of the project. ltbdl (talk) 14:27, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template title[edit]

Hi The template title of the page I made is uneditable? How do I edit the title of teh template at the top? Ta 0003 (talk) 22:11, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ta 0003: pages are renamed by moving them to a new name. which template is this regarding? RudolfRed (talk) 22:18, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ta 0003: you have six total published edits, none of them is a template. Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 06:16, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ta 0003: Considering [2] (a very inappropriate edit which has been reverted), it appears your question has nothing to do with templates. The title of a page is changed by moving the page. The magic word (not template) {{DISPLAYTITLE:}} can only make very limited changes. See WP:DISPLAYTITLE. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:16, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
