February 24[edit]

Writing an article[edit]

I am trying to write an article, it keeps getting declined due to lack of sources. The World Bushido Federation has its website and Facebook page at the moment.I either need someone to write it or to understand right now there's only 2 sources and approve it. Stingray3000 (talk) 03:45, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Stingray3000: a subject must be notable by our definition before it can have an article. see WP:NCORP. If those are the only two sources, then the World Bushido Federation is not notable by our definition and therefore cannot have an article. -Arch dude (talk) 05:43, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Stingray3000 (talk) 21:39, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Or to put it another way: Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. Protected template problem[edit]

Hi I am a director of the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Foundation. I visited our page and realised it was hopelessly out of date. Many government departments, organisations and external links and other things had disappeared. Images were incorrect. I have no idea who set the page up about a decade ago. However, they set up a citation template that is protected and I cannot fix citations etc.

Is there any way I can become editor of this page so that we can correct all the issues that occur within templates?

Thanks and regards Geoff Brooks Deputy Chair/Treasurer Western Port Biosphere Foundation BrooksieG (talk) 05:38, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @BrooksieG, the changes that you made to the article were inappropriate in several ways: they were overly promotional and were not supported by reliable sources. Generally Wikipedia is not interested in what an organization wants to say about itself, but only in what unaffiliated reliable sources have published about it. Please see the message that I left on your talk page for information on what you should do. CodeTalker (talk) 06:00, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please give me Dame Carolyn McCall’s email address?[edit]

I have been trying to contact Dame Carolyn McCall’s email address at CEO at ITV, White City, London W? Can you help me please? 81.100.147.100 (talk) 08:55, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This Help Desk is for questions relating to using and/or editing Wikipedia only. We aren't a directory, and don't have such information. AndyTheGrump (talk) 09:10, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You could use Wikipedia:Reference desk to ask a more general question, like "How do I find the email of a UK company CEO?", in which case you would probably be advised to use a website like https://www.ceoemail.com/ - but as stated above, this isn't the place to ask. Citing clippings of a multi-page article at Newspapers.com[edit]

I understand they haven't pursued the option to link multiple clippings, so what's the consensus here on how to do it that is least confusing for readers? And thank you so much for being the angels you are! Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 09:36, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Oona Wikiwalker. Your question lacks sufficient context for me to be highly confident in my answer, but here goes: If a newspaper published an article about a topic, and the article was published on pages 17 to 19, then include 17-19 in the page number field. It makes no difference whatsoever whether you found the the article at Newspapers.com or in a stack of old newspapers that your grandmother saved. It is all the same. Provide complete bibliographic details and then move on. Cullen328 (talk) 10:25, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The bit that Cullen328 has not spelt out to you, Oona, is that for most citations, a link is not an essential part of the citation, but a convenience added for a reader. The important bit is the bibliographic information (author, title, date, publication, page etc) that will allow a reader to a) estimate the likely value of consulting the source, and b) obtain the source, whether by picking a link, by ordering a copy from a major library, or anything in between, ColinFine (talk) 12:23, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
With all due respect, Colin, I've found that a link is vital to a citation. I've come across articles citing a book, and when I read the book at Internet Archive I found that it didn't say what the citation claimed or even mention the subject at all. Without that link, no one could verify it. In one case the inaccurate information was picked up by mirrors for 20 years. Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 23:11, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Oona Wikiwalker. There's some good advice about citing multi page clippings at WP:NEWSPAPERS.COM#Citations across multiple pages/clippings Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 12:39, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for that link! I knew there must be a solution like that, but the help pages confuse me so much and send me off to yet another wall of text that my mind freezes up. Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 06:30, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Odd capitalisation in infobox[edit]

In Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, infectious diseases is capitalised in the infobox, but not in the source text. Anybody know how to ensure it's written normally? —Femke 🐦 (talk) 16:49, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to be a bug in Module:String2 ucfirst() particularly at line 25 (permalink) where the mw.ustring.find() finds the piped link infectious disease the label of which it then capitalizes. I guess I would have expected that function to capitalize the 'r' in Rheumatology (had it not already been capitalized). If I down-case the 'R' in Rheumatology the bug skips over that and still capitalizes the 'infectious disease' link label:

Rheumatology, rehabilitation medicine, endocrinology, infectious disease, neurology, immunology, internal medicine, paediatrics, other specialists in ME/CFS
I'll give some thought to fixing this.

Thanks for looking into it, that's very kind :) —Femke 🐦 (talk) 18:26, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed in Module:String2/sandbox I think. I have solicited comment at Module talk:String2#ucfirst().

infobox categories[edit]

i'm working on a draft for a multimedia project and i'm trying to find an infobox for it. however i have 0 idea which one to use. the project itself is only music videos, audio drama, and occasional supplementary comics or questions, but i cant use the anime, manga, or musician boxes with it. are there any suggestions for boxes that would have potential for more detail but wouldnt be specific, or would i just have to code my own? -Astral~(he/him/his) 18:01, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AstralAlley: Take a look at Infobox artwork. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:05, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
this should work (hopefully). i'll try it, but it's definitely better than what i have now, thanks :3 -Astral~(he/him/his) 20:53, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

editing my husband's bio[edit]

20 upper, it is not appropriate to use scare quotes around husband. Cullen328 (talk) 20:41, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lead sentence of biography[edit]

Hi! I'm currently editing the biography of a living person who's best known by a pseudonym. I've come to the conclusion that I can't include their last name under WP:BLPPRIVACY (as I'm doubtful that it's been widely published); however, as they have stated what their first name is in an interview, I believe that this is alright to include.

I was wondering what the best way to word the opening sentence would be in this situation. I've checked MOS:BIO, and from what I can see, it would normally take the form of something like [firstname] [lastname], better known as [pseudonym]...; however, I can't see any guidance on what to do if only the first name is known/can be included - and [firstname], better known as [pseudonym] seems...weird, as (for one reason) it almost implies that the person doesn't have a last name. Is it better to just simply remove the legal name entirely from the lead sentence in this scenario? (Is there a part of the MOS that addresses this situation that I've missed?)

Any guidance on what best to do in this situation is appreciated :) All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 20:36, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you refer to Fanum (streamer)? Their surname is already in the article. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:54, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, but I don't believe it's been widely published enough to meet the WP:BLPPRIVACY threshold (and the only cited source that includes the surname is dubious as an RS), so I'm planning to remove it - but I don't know how best to reword that part of the lead sentence. All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 20:56, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just looking through Category:American YouTubers for example, there seems to be some precedent for [firstname], better known as [pseudonym]: Technoblade, mxmtoon, QTCinderella, Jerma985, Dream (YouTuber). Rummskartoffel 14:41, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rummskartoffel Thank you! I hadn't thought of looking through there :) All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 23:13, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Page issue[edit]

There are two recently created pages called Miley hai tum humko and Miley ho tum humko. The titles are almost the same, and the text is the exact same. I am unsure what to do here, as this is clearly a problem. 8UB3RG1N3 (talk) 23:23, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
