Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (The Big-Hearted Will Take Away the Bride) is an Indian romance film directed by Aditya Chopra, and co-written with him by Javed Siddiqui. Released on 20 October 1995, the film stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol (pictured). It focuses on Raj and Simran, two non-resident Indians who fall in love while travelling in Europe with friends, and on Raj's attempts to win over Simran's family so that the couple can marry. The film was shot in India, London and Switzerland, from September 1994 to August 1995. It won 10 Filmfare Awards, the most for a single film at that time, and its soundtrack album became one of the most popular of the 1990s. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is one of only three Hindi films in the reference book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, and is 12th on the British Film Institute's list of top Indian films of all time. Over 20 years after its first release, it is still being shown at the Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai, making it the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema. (Full article...)

1740 – Under the terms of the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713, Maria Theresa (pictured) assumed the throne of the Habsburg Monarchy in Austria.
1944 – World War II: Fulfilling a promise he made two years previously, General Douglas MacArthur landed on Leyte to begin the recapture of the entire Philippine Archipelago.
1973 – Watergate scandal: Both Attorney General Elliot Richardson and his deputy William Ruckelshaus resigned rather than obey Richard Nixon's order to have Archibald Cox fired.
1982 – During a UEFA Cup match between FC Spartak Moscow and HFC Haarlem, a large number of attendees tried to leave the Grand Sports Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium at the same time, resulting in a stampede that caused 66 deaths.

Alexis (1629–1676) was the tsar of Russia from 1645 until his death. Born in Moscow on 29 March 1629, the son of Tsar Michael and Eudoxia Streshneva, the sixteen-year-old Alexis acceded to the throne after his father's death. Boris Morozov, a shrewd boyar open to Western ideas, took charge of Russia in the early years of Alexis's reign, but was exiled from Moscow following a popular uprising. Alexis responded to the uprising with a new legal code. His reign saw wars with Poland and with Sweden, a schism in the Russian Orthodox Church, and the major Cossack revolt of Stenka Razin. Alexis was married twice and had sixteen children, including tsars Fyodor III; Ivan V; Peter the Great; and Sofia, who ruled as regent for her brothers from 1682 to 1689.
