Wellington Meetup 10 June 2023[edit]

  • Location: He Matapihi Molesworth Library at National Library, corner Molesworth and Aitken Streets, Wellington
    Come to the main entrance of the National Library on Molesworth Street.
  • Bring a laptop if you have one. There are publicly available computers if you don't have a laptop.

Venue[edit]

The group meet at the He Matapihi Molesworth Library within the National Library. This is a Wellington City Council pop up public library. Mask wearing is encouraged. Drinks are permitted in the library.

Agenda and Notes from Meeting[edit]

1. Introduction to meet up by organisers (if there are any newbies joining us)

2. Pick a new location This library is closing on the 30th of June (see this announcement) so we need a new meeting location. What does the group want to do?

Einebillion (talk) has enquired with both Wellington City Libraries and the National Library. Responses are:
  • National Library There is a long table on Level One called the Friends of Turnbull table that they have offered us. From the look of the photograph they have provided Einebillion there may be a lack of powerpoints but I think it would be worth us going up to have a look.

  • is a separate space not close to the quiet researchers
  • still in the National Library so we're familiar with the parking and closeness of public transport hubs
  • still near the cafe

  • no public computers to permit digital equity should someone join who doesn't have a laptop

3. Invite to dinner meetup with committee members of Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand

When? 7pm Friday 21 July 2023
Where? Mediterranean Foods Trattoria, 42 Constable Street, Newtown
Why? The committee of Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) are in town to have an in person strategy weekend. Those of us in town on the Friday night are heading out to dinner and we were wondering whether you'd like to join us? Pop your name below if you're interested... It's pay your own way.

4. Ambrosia10's report back to the Wellington community on her Wikimedia Foundation funded attendance of SPNHC2023 Part of the metrics gathered for this funding requires Ambrosia10 to formally report back to various Wiki communities on her participation in SPNHC2023.

A conference report is currently being drafted in google docs and can be found here
The formal report back to the Wikimedia Foundation giving impact metrics and a financial report is also currently being drafted and can/will be found here. This report won't be finalised until I've completed all my reporting back to the wider Wiki community. I'm aiming to also give an oral report to the Aotearoa New Zealand meetup, to share my conference report with WikiProject New Zealand, to the Wikidata WikiProject Biodiversity group and to do a general report in New Zealand's section of the GLAM Wiki newsletter. I'm anticipating to have this complete by the end of June.
Today's oral report back to the Wellington community will cover the following
  • Pre-conference engagement brought about as a result of social media posts
  • Presentations at the conference by Ambrosia10 and the reception of the attendees to the presentations
Ambrosia10's highlights of the conference - including
  • the two Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) workshops and learning more about the Darwin Core standard to assist in the creation of digital extended specimens and GBIFs efforts to work with this standard to empower institutions to provide data to empower the digital extended specimen.
  • the symposia about "Broadening Access and Use of Natural History Collections Through Innovative Approaches and Engagement"
  • the symposia about "Narrowing the Gaps: The role of digital infrastructure in shortening the distance between physical collections and their derivative research products"
  • Highlights of discussions had at the conference. Examples include Miranda Lowe from the Natural History Museum, London, Adania Flemming from University of Florida and the Florida Museum of Natural History , Ely Wallis from the Atlas of Living Australia, CSIRO and current chair of Biodiversity Information Standards TDWG (Taxonomic Databases Working Group), Deb Paul (the previous chair of TDWG) and now Biodiversity Informatics Community Liaison for the Species File Group, Shelley James for the Western Australia Herbarium and co organiser of TDWG2023, Austin Mast at the Florida State University and organiser of WeDigBio a twice annual transcription event and so many more.

5. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on

  • Marshelec is unable to attend today, but reports that work in the past month includes a collaborative project with Wainuiomartian on a substantial new article published to main space this morning: CentrePort Wellington. There is still a need to expand the coverage of the early history of the port in the separate article Wellington Harbour Board, plus improve coverage of the various developments of the Wellington waterfront since 1989 (eg Lambton Harbour Management etc). Also did some expansion of Matiu / Somes Island (hopefully the GA review of this article that is delayed by the reviewer at present will recommence shortly). In addition to the two new articles about women architects reported last month, Marshelec has significantly expanded the existing article: Nancy Northcroft. Other work in the past month includes various expansions to New Zealand performing arts venues plus a new article Baycourt Community and Arts Centre. Marshelec has also been active as a reviewer for Articles for Creation. His AFCR stats since mid-April are: 10 Accepted, 28 Declined. One of the recently accepted articles took a fair bit of work, but was interesting: Princes Wharf, Hobart. Another recently accepted article is: Bee Card (payment card). Work for WANZ has included developing the process for making grants, membership application administration, plus preliminary steps towards implementing an online accounting package. This will be necessary to help manage the increased scale of operations we expect with the new multi-year funding from WMF.
  • Ambrosia10 attending SPNHC2023. I've had informal confirmation that I will be invited to keynote at the Australian Citizen Science Association conference in November. Researcher contacted me with scholarly paper about a woman botanist that I added to Wikidata! Obviously given my digital volunteering and citizen science various Wiki projects will be making an appearance in my presentation. In the past month I've also attended in the Women in Architecture editathon and created a new article, expanded several others and undertook Wikidata editing on items related to women in architecture. I'm still working on the mix'n'match dataset of Harvard Index of Botanists. I've also been doing general Wiki editing including adding information to or creating Wikidata items for presenters at SPNHC.
  • Stitchbird2 (talk) 21:23, 9 June 2023 (UTC) enjoyed participating in the NZ Women in Architecture wiki-a-thon virtually on 20 May. My main contribution at that event was creating and completing a wikipedia page for Dorita Hannah, as well as numerous associated wikidata items. I've also created wikidata items for NZ exhibition designers Rosanne Kwan (Q118729937) and Vioula Said (Q118728100), NZ botanists Rene Orchiston (Q118752544) and Sue Scheele (Q118761172), and the new fish curator at Te Papa, Thomas D. Linley (Q118728100), as well as many of their associated works or research papers. I think Rene Orchiston should potentially be added to the Women in Red as someone notable enough for a wikipedia article (thoughts? - discussed that if she's in Wikidata she will automatically be added to Wiki in Red lists). I am very excited to report that I also got back into creating NZ Myosotis species wikipedia articles and have written 4 this month with another one in progress. I'm continuing to do botanical collector disambiguations at Te Papa as they pop up, which involves updating wikidata, wikipedia, and our database and crosslinking them all. For example, and external request about botanical illustrator Emily Harris (artist) helped us discover that at least one of our specimens collected by "Miss Harris" is attributable to her. A recent discovery by a colleague in the herbarium about Henry Walter Cockerill and his son Thomas Henry Cockerill is my next challenge (neither have wikidata items so far). Finally, this month I've started tracking my wiki highlights such as these in a spreadsheet so that I can remember what I've done to properly report on them here and elsewhere![reply]
  • Pakoire Been doing quite a lot of editing as well as the usual organising so wanted to share - feel free to have a look and add :) (as Marshall has done). New articles created in the last month Haeata women's arts collective, Jessica Halliday architectural historian, Glenda Tuaine arts person based in Rarotonga, the big one Performing arts in New Zealand which I have put out to colleagues for any major omissions, and had one person interested in expanding young people theatre as this was her PHD subject, and New Zealand performing arts venues. Expanded Creative New Zealand - there is more about the history of arts funding that would be interesting and valid in this article. Also Draft:Tom Sainsbury which is being created by a family member.
  • Wainuiomartian created an article on the Winter Show Building to complement an existing article about Te Whaea, and collaborated with Marshelec on a new article about CentrePort.
  • Gertrude206has only been 'gardening'. Checked out sculptures by NZ sculptors when in Canberra and did a bit of tidying of articles and photos in Commons. Discussed helping new editor writing article on artist.
  • Noracrentiss (talk) Created article on Motor Neurone Disease NZ Charitable Trust. Admin for WANZ Committee.
  • Einebillion has been working on women photographers and administrative work for Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Sameeenz nothing in Wikipedia this month but coming along to the meeting 'cause we're his people!
