I have around no time right now, will weigh in more fully soon. Suggest getting a drive page up very soon regardless of where it is to give time to fill it out and get the improvement drive going. Fully support the project in whatever form it ends up. Would recommend making the drive with a rather broad scope to allow as many people to contribute as possible. Merger

Neutral Weakly oppose merger: I honestly don't really care if it's a stand alone project or a task force. I, upon further thinking, weakly oppose this. That's just my personal opinion, though, that this project should stay stand alone. Henry20090 (talk) 22:23, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

This discussion seems to have stalled, and there doesn't seem to be a consensus to merge at this time. Will archive for now, and we can revisit as needed. ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:40, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Assessment

Should we set up an assessment template that is fed with the articles currently in the Template:Black Lives Matter? There are a lot, and getting a picture of their current state would be a good place to start. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 22:19, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

  • OK to do this we need to make a talk page template that the assessment template can draw from. Then we have to tag all the articles and rate them. I don't remember how to make a talk page template other than copying from another one... we should probably decide about African Diaspora subpage or not first. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 22:41, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Edit-a-thon/Article drive/??

I was just about to make Wikipedia:WikiProject African diaspora/BLM Edit-a-thon 2020, but this page was created and so I have paused for now. Based on discussion at WP:VPR, I was thinking that we ought create a month long editathon, which could then get publicized, and hopefully draw in editors both old and new. Thoughts on how to structure such an editathon, how to record progress, and how to...gamify it? A BLM barnstar might be a good option. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 21:58, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

CaptainEek, How about Wikipedia:WikiProject Black Lives Matter/2020 or (Wikipedia:WikiProject Black Lives Matter/June 2020 if you think the month should be in the title)? +1 to a barnstar. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:01, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Yes, BLM barnstar, but how are we gonna design it? By image contest? Henry20090 (talk) 22:01, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Image contest, or a singular person creating the logo/barnstar?

I am holding a consensus poll to determine if there should be an image contest or a singular person creating the logo for this WikiProject/this WikiProject's barnstar. Anybody may !vote. Contest= image contest, and 1=singular person creation. Henry20090 (talk) 22:14, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Neutral, as nominator: I'm neutral about it, I was just curious what other editors preferred. Henry20090 (talk) 22:20, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Question: Could "image contest" be illustrations/logos? I've seen some really powerful imagery for the Black Lives Matter movement, whether the single raised fist, the raised fist in many colors, the phrase in varying opacities... Would love to see something in the vein of art created by the movement rather than a photo, for example. —Shrinkydinks (talk) 07:59, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

DYK nom

FYI, I've nominated the article for When the looting starts, the shooting starts for DYK. DYK noms normally take a while to get reviewed, but it'd be cool if we could fast-track this one so that it'll hopefully appear on the front page in a timely manner. If anyone wants to nominate other articles, feel free, although be judicious since I'd guess there's some hesitancy to make DYK overlap too much with ITN (articles that have appeared on ITN are not eligible). {{u|Sdkb}}talk 00:22, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello potential allies. Educated black person here. Thought I should get that out of the way, since we still seem to be in the era when that matters.

What percentage of editors of this project are black, and how does that compare to the demographics of the USA, or even the world? Nobody has to reveal anything they don't want to, it is possible to measure this with surveys.

Why the slavish reliance on "reliable sources" by Wikipedia, when their ingrained biases are clearly part of the systemic oppression that BLM is attempting to highlight? Is Colin Kapearnick described by Wikipedia as a civil rights activist because he self-identified as such, or because the mainstream media put him in that box because it is perhaps more convenient and less uncomfortable than human rights activist, reflecting the minor victory of having Wikipedia describe BLM as a human rights movement (although perhaps even that was only as a result of the generous mainstream media recognising their own bias?).

Why is it even being suggested by this very project's introduction that somehow it's about political views, as in you must put them aside if you want to be a part of this project, regardless of whether you're looking to vote for the party that supports black lives, or, um, opposes black lives? In reality, clearly political objectives (stuff where voting red or blue makes a difference) form only part of the BLM movement's goals, and an arguably minor or secondary role to the far more important goal of basic respect for black people's right to life and basic human dignity. As we all now must surely recognise is the entire reason the name was chosen, no balancing effort in the name of neutrality required, only an acknowledgment that misrepresenting the name was for a very long time the chosen tactic of those who seemed to think it was, in the main, a political movement.

There's clearly no political solution to a middle class white Democratic voting woman believing the cops are her personal anti-black protection force, black folks unfortunately have to persuade people like that to become allies, as a far more realistic means of achieving their political goals than reaching out to others slightly less amenable demographics.

Does any of this even appear in reliable sources, such that this project might improve related Wikipedia articles with their contents, or is that just a bridge too far at this time? I personally can't even begin to want to get involved, when it is so clearly still the case that Wikipedia is operating under the several flawed assumptions herein of what neutrality is, and what it is not.

I am quietly confident BLM has pushed the needle far enough that there must be at least some reliable sources out there which define a refusal to, for want of a better word, blackout Wikipedia in support of the movement, qualifies as taking a political stand against whatever it is that Wikipedia defines as the political aspect of BLM. Silence is violence, and all that. I saw that refusal, and I took it for what I know it was, deep down, right down in that place that white women hadn't dared to examine before, and Wikipedia perhaps needs to accept you're not going to persuade black folks it was something else, especially not if you have not yet even persuaded a statistically significant number of them to get involved with your proposed alternative, namely improving Wikipedia articles. Especially, especially, under the restriction of respecting only what the mainstream media says.

If these are the non-negotiable principles on which Wikipedia was founded, as was said repeatedly in the denial of a blackout, then perhaps Wikipedia needs to ask itself what is institutional racism, and am I, as a part of the Wikipedia instition, doing it right now. Right. Now. Krypto Wallace (talk) 13:15, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Krypto Wallace, the answer is of course. Ditto institutional sexism. For me it's a reason to contribute rather than a reason not to, but YMMV. —valereee (talk) 19:25, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
"reliable sources" "mainstream media". Reliance on "what the mainstream media says" is absolutely not a non-negotiable principle on which Wikipedia is founded; actually I would say that including only the most mainstream viewpoint is the exact opposite of finding and summarising reliable sources. I very strongly encourage you to add sources that are reliable but not mainstream. - Astrophobe (talk) 20:37, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Interesting links, and food for thought. Unbelievably, I almost even forgot to add my own personal experience. I was unimpressed to see that for the sole crime of knowing copyright law, I, a black person, was accused by a white editor, someone who is seemingly part of the furniture around here (and notably of a Democratic persuasion), of, believe it or not, attempting to "whitewash" Wikipedia. It was not a direct slur, it was only loosely directed at unspecified newcomers. But as the cap seemed to fit his intended target in my case, I decided to speak my mind, given the racial overtones and the supreme irony, especially since the issue was related to BLM. And what do you know, not only did the person ignore it, literally every other Wikipedia editor has too. Now, I won't say this is the worst example of being dehumanised and devalued I have ever seen, but this is Wikipedia, a text only medium, so if you had to rank the possible ways a person can be dehumanised and devalued here, while that probably wouldn't be first (racial slurs) or even second (race based discrimination), it might very well be the third. A white man, who is totally ignorant of the law surrounding the issue he was stomping around in, demanding others be clear with him as to why he couldn't get his way, indirectly accusing me, a knowledgeable black person and newcomer to Wikipedia, being put well and truly in my place. I did not complain, I shut my mouth. Go along to get along, right? Krypto Wallace (talk) 20:44, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Perhaps you are looking for User talk:Jimbo Wales or something. This is a place for improvement of articles on Wikipedia, not a dramaboard. Elizium23 (talk) 21:06, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
Nope. Just trying to promote a safe space for people to express themselves respectfully, as Krypto Wallace has, without being silenced. When someone shares an experience about feeling "devalued", we should listen and validate that, even if you don't feel it is the exact right place. You do Wikipedia a disservice, and reinforce that negative experience, by responding with accusations of drama. I think we should just leave it here rather than continuing the debate. Dominic·t 00:43, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
@Krypto Wallace: "I, a black person, was accused by a white editor, someone who is seemingly part of the furniture around here (and notably of a Democratic persuasion), of, believe it or not, attempting to "whitewash" Wikipedia" - I believe that was me, but my point was made before you entered the discussion (so could not have been addressed to you) and was simply saying that you should make your point clearly and unambiguously (which as far as I can tell, you did) because the removal of the statue of Edward Colton was major national news and the possibility of Wikipedia policies and guidelines being misinterpreted by the general public was significant. Hence the link to Wikipedia:Wikipedia is in the real world. FTR, although I don't think it's relevant to make the point I just did, I was in a relationship with a black woman for 6 years. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:53, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Comment I'm not seeing any comments from other editors discriminating against Krypto Wallace's because of the editors race. It is actually impossible to even identify the race of Krypto Wallace when the editor doesn't have a user page. The only editor who has identified Krypto Wallace as a black man is.....Krypto Wallace. As far as I can tell, Krypto Wallace is the one who's the racist in this discusssion via I quote from Krypto:

A white man, who is totally ignorant of the law surrounding the issue he was stomping around in, demanding others be clear with him as to why he couldn't get his way, indirectly accusing me, a knowledgeable black person and newcomer to Wikipedia, being put well and truly in my place. French speakers welcome

Hi all! I recently started the article Death of Adama Traoré, who died (likely killed by) police in France in 2016, sparking France's first Black Lives Matter protests. The George Floyd solidarity protests in France right now are also honoring Traoré. I do not speak French, and there is obviously much more substantial information on the affair--especially the inconsistencies in officer testimony, prosecutorial behavior, the first medical examination of Traoré's body, along with the nature of the subsequent 2016 protests following his death--in French. Especially (but not exclusively, of course) if you have a decent French reading ability, feel free to jump on in and help expand it in any way you can. The French Wikipedia article is super extensive, so it shouldn't be too much to find good sources. WhinyTheYounger (talk) 18:04, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Lists of killings by law enforcement officers in the United States is currently my 4th Google hit when I search for "US police killings". If the page view tool is accurate, the article got fewer than 1 average daily view before 5/29, and has seen over 200,000 views since then. According to many news sources (e.g. [1]), there were over 1000 killings by the police in the US in 2019, but Template:Lists of killings by law enforcement officers in the United States lists only 139 for the year. The navbox on all list articles, which are broken down by year and month, as well as the table in the top-level list appear to be displaying numbers generated from the table rows in Wikipedia, rather than cited statistics, which is leading to a large undercount and misleading numbers, as a result of the articles' lack of completeness. Wikipedia says lists 0 police killings in Nov. 2019, while https://mappingpoliceviolence.org/ says there were five on Nov. 1 alone. I just added 2 killings in May I knew just from following local news in my hometown of Indianapolis that were not represented. I don't know if someone is able to undertake actually making these lists comprehensive based on some of the reputable data sources out there (one possibility), but, if not, we may have to rework the approach so it is not so misleading. I note there have already been 4 separate messages left on that articles talk page recently, but it may no one is actively monitoring it, so I'm hoping someone here can check it out. Dominic·t 23:20, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

  • Than you so much for diving into this! I found that article and was also confused by the inclusion criteria. Seems it's not WP:GNG but rather anything sourced that Wikipedia editors have had the time to add. It seems these lists would not be dynamic, then, although it would be challenging to raise them all up to standard. I know the Washington Post tracks police shootings in the United States and has found ~1000 every year since they started tracking them (2013? 2015?), so we have that as a lower bound. Is this list, or perhaps a few of its sub-lists, a potential featured list goal for our WikiProject? —Shrinkydinks (talk) 07:48, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Added articles to the WikiProject

Hello team! I added a couple dozen articles to our WikiProject today. I'll create one of those progress scorecards soon to keep us organized! I need your help in two ways:

  1. I need your help assessing articles in our project for quality and for importance!
  2. A discussion question for you about WikiProject scope: The Shooting of Trayvon Martin and the Trial of George Zimmerman are both of interest to our project. Should articles like George Zimmerman be included in our project? On the one hand, all of the subject's notoriety comes from the shooting of Trayvon Martin, an issue of top importance for our project, and it might be important we help ensure articles like that include all the necessary information. On the other hand, the topic might not exactly inspire editors on our team. What do you think?

Shrinkydinks (talk) 19:39, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Collaboration

Hi all, writing is not generally my strong suit (or rather organizing my writing) but fact finding is. I've created two new articles that are bare bones but very relevant to this movement as well as general history. I'd be glad to share the physical papers from archives via email if anyone would like to help flesh these out with me. See: Harry Adams (photographer) and Death of William Leonard. Thanks! Publicizing edit drive

Watchlist notice

There is a discussion on whether our edit drive should be publicized to users as a watchlist notice, see MediaWiki_talk:Watchlist-messages#BLM_drive_mockups. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 18:04, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Banner?

I had personally also thought about a main page banner, but we would need to get one drawn up and also get consensus at WP:VPR I imagine. Its been done with WP:WIR before, as well as some other projects/contests, I think it could be worth a shot. Thoughts? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 18:04, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

CaptainEek, my graphics-fu is weak. Why not look at some recent banners and see who created them? Guy (help!) 21:02, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Media?

Is this something we would like to try to publicize in the press? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 18:04, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

CaptainEek, That'd be amazing! At this rate, editors may be able to create/improve 100 Wikipedia articles during June, which I think would be a wonderful thing. Would a collective goal like this be worth publicizing? ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:01, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
CaptainEek: This is a great idea. As news organizations are looking for stories around this cultural moment, I'm pretty optimistic reporters at major news sources (NYT, Vox, The Atlantic?, WSJ?) could be interested in a story about this WikiProject. For example, I could see a story like this being of interest to broad readership: "Where previously black stories have gone untold and unknown, a new kind of activism is unfolding online: Wikipedia editors are organizing to meticulously document the conflicts, challenges, and progress of the day." —Shrinkydinks (talk) 21:23, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
Our work is of particular importance because of how much the general public relies on Wikipedia for reliable information around different situations.—Shrinkydinks (talk) 21:30, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
Question: Does anybody know any reporters? Not sure I know many personally but I'm happy to identify a few who might be on the right kind of beat for this story, and potentially reach out to them via email. —Shrinkydinks (talk) 21:25, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
Try Julia Jacobs of the New York Times. She interviewed me (a black trans editor) for a feature story on Wikipedia and harassment. Might also mention the WMF statement in support of BlackLivesMatter. (I'd reach out to her myself but I don't have the energy today; whoever does, tell her Pax Ahimsa sent you :-) ) Funcrunch (talk) 23:01, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
Thank you!! Am writing an email now. —Shrinkydinks (talk) 00:43, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
@Funcrunch: Email sent! I'll update here if/when I hear back. —Shrinkydinks (talk) 16:15, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
Related: I think awareness around this WikiProject could be a tremendous structured opportunity to recruit editors of color (which has historically been a huge struggle for Wikipedia). In general, people who are passionate about particular topics (and who are willing to learn Wikipedia's policies) become immense assets to the community. —Shrinkydinks (talk) 21:26, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

@Shrinkydinks: I know several reporters that cover Wikipedia (plus the other folks at The Signpost of course). Whenever you have an event, please email me a press release or just post it at Signpost suggestions. I have something particular in mind right now, and you may also hear from other Signposters. Creation of new task force

So, I have been bold and created an assessment task force. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Black Lives Matter/Assessment for more info and sign under participants if you want to actively assess articles. Assessment task forces are usually uncontroversial, so if anybody contests, I'll make a poll. Henry20090 (talk) 18:18, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

  • @Henry20090: Thank you for setting this up! I've linked it in the Assessment/Statistics section on the main WikiProject page —Shrinkydinks (talk) 21:02, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Question: I worry our importance categories might skew too far toward high/top importance. In other projects I've been part of, I've seen a pretty conservative stance on what gets these priorities—I think a benefit of doing this is we can be really focused on the articles that are most important for us to improve or maintain. Could we perhaps add a few more examples of Mid and Low importance articles (and perhaps also High and Top) to articulate a clear direction? —Shrinkydinks (talk) 21:04, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Answer @Shrinkydinks: Yes, you may, at any time, configure the quality or importance scales to add more examples. Henry20090 (talk) 21:10, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

I was actually uncertain myself while assessing articles, so I left the "importance" empty. Jerm (talk) 21:25, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
@Jerm: Mkay. If you truly are not sure, leave it empty. Importance will probably be assessed by the previously mentioned assessment task force within a few hours. Henry20090 (talk) 21:32, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
@Henry20090: I've assessed almost 100 articles and left the "importance" empty, yet the assessment table on the main page isn't updating. Jerm (talk) 01:01, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
Main page purged. Should be updated. Henry20090 (talk) 01:33, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
@Jerm: The assessment bot only updates tables every three days, by default. The bot has some light documentation here. That said, you can request an immediate table update using this web form! Looks like we now have quality assessed for 148/190 articles; thank you for your help! —Shrinkydinks (talk) 04:45, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

Scope

What is the scope of this project to be? Right now we say we cover the Black Lives Matter movement, but I forsee that we could cover a wider range of issues, perhaps taking on some of the topics that had previously been shoved into WP:Wikiproject African Diaspora simply because they had nowhere better to go. Thus I see some overlap with civil rights issues, and potentially undercovered historical figures, in a similar way to what WP:WIR does. Thoughts? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 21:00, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

  • Another project with which we might start to overlap would be WP:WikiProject Civil Rights Movement. I'd err on the side of staying focused on the recent movement, so we can focus on doing an exceptional job with those articles. That said, I'm open to/supportive of adopting a wider domain if other editors would like and feel passionate about that! —Shrinkydinks (talk) 21:07, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
  • @Shrinkydinks and CaptainEek: addition to improving articles about the movement for Black Lives, I suggest including articles in line with the focus of the movement, for example Criminal justice reform in the United States, Police brutality in the United States etc... Anti-Racism is only Start class!!
WikiProject African diaspora could always use more help is assessing their articles list but don't think you should assume there is an automatic overlap.MassiveEartha (talk) 08:24, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Agree with MassiveEartha. I personally support the focus being a bit wider, while still keeping a main/core focus on the BLM movement and black-related activism/human rights issues. The broader the scope, the broader the participation. And since there is Racial bias on Wikipedia, inviting more participation into black-related topics and making underrepresented black history more accessible can only be a good thing. - Whisperjanes (talk) 00:14, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
    • I also want to mention that the June edit-a-thon page already contains (under the "Missing articles" section) lists of black people and black organizations -- so this project already seems to have editors interested in a wider scope. I think some editors might be interested in this project in a broader sense, such as it partially being a platform (like Women in Red, mentioned above) where it tries to tackle the issue of black-related Racial bias on Wikipedia, or at the least, also tackle underrepresented black history. Even the Black Lives Matter website mentions that they are about "creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy" and building "local power" in addition to combating violence against black communities. Maybe this all makes the scope too broad (or maybe I'm misunderstanding editors' intentions & the edit-a-thon page), but I think it's something to consider. - Whisperjanes (talk) 00:49, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Addition of Police Killings of Black US Citizens to Wikipedia as a category

I've been looking up the police killings of Brenda James, Trayvon Martin and others in the wake of George Floyd's murder. I could not find a category that lists all police killings of black male and female U.S. citizens. This would be an important resource to document all black individuals who were killed by the police, and allow readers to access the respective "Shooting of .." pages for all details pertaining to the incident. Currently we have a few pages that document police shooting but I believe a full and complete list of pages that resides in its own category would be an invaluable resource, over the next few months while investigations are being reopened and many people are turning to the internet to educate themselves, and for posterity as a record of police misconduct and brutality.-Mobius278, 06/06/2020 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mobius278 (talkcontribs) 15:38, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Thoughts about this draft? The organization seems to only get coverage for having a confusing name that suggests it's affiliated with the BLM movement. I don't know that it's actually notable in and of itself. Might be best to accept and send to AFD for greater community input? Or accept and tag for notability? Thoughts? Calliopejen1 I believe that was the point. I will always side-eye such. Articles on deaths in Swiss police custody

Hi all -- thank you for everything done in this WikiProject. As a resident of Geneva, I've been trying to document the notable deaths of black people related to Swiss police brutality. These names are some of the names invoked at Swiss BLM protests today.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Samson_Chukwu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Hervé_Bondembe_Mandundu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Lamin_Fatty

The first of the above draft articles has been initially rejected for lack of notability. I responded to the reviewer to ask for clarification here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:JavaHurricane#Message_from_Lawrenceleejr

And in response to their last message, I wrote a long post outlining the credibility of the cited sources and the specific notability of this case. I see now that this revision of this talk page has been removed, which is really troubling.

Do you have any advice on what to do in this situation where a reviewer decides that such an article isn't noteworthy?

Thanks! --Lawrenceleejr (talk) 07:50, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Covering African cinema

Wow I like to contribute to this initiative but I need clarifications whether we can create articles only about African-Americans as a part of this project. I also hope to create more African films, African film actors, directors as I have been showing my interest towards African cinema since October 2019 after taking part in the WikiProject AfroCine/Months of African Cinema. I also noticed there is a huge bias on films whereas I observed there is a huge coverage on Hollywood, Bollywood, Kollywood industries in Wikipedia compared to the coverage about African cinema. If I am mistaken with my opinions I apologise for this suggestion. I try to contribute towards this project to fight against racism. Abishe (talk) 07:09, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi there, Abishe-- I think that work is awesome! Definitely a worthy effort toward ending coverage bias on Wikipedia. Thank you for sharing it here! It's my own opinion that this WikiProject should remain focused on the political movement and its immediate concerns (specific people, issues, events, etc.)—and African Cinema would fall outside that (not be included). I'm not sure what WikiProject would be best suited for that effort (although WP:WikiProject AfroCine seems it might be exactly what you're working)... perhaps others could chime in? —Shrinkydinks (talk) 01:29, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
More importantly, you do not need a project to write encyclopedic content. Just ensure that the topic meets the notability and verifiability requirements, and is adequately referenced. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 08:03, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Black Vietnam War vets

Hi all, I just realized today that we did not have an article about Military history of African Americans in the Vietnam War (we do for the Revolutionary and Civil Wars), so I created one. However, there seem to be a lot of underdeveloped/unexplored topics that branch out from this topic. Black troops formed a lot of solidarity groups, for example, that might be notable enough independently or as a list. What really inspired me to post here, though, was this list of memoirs published by black veterans.

  • GI Diary by David Parks (1968)
  • The Courageous and the Proud by Samuel Vance (1970)
  • Memphis-Nam-Sweden: The Autobiography of a Black American Exile by Terry Whitmore (1971)
  • Just Before the Dawn: A Doctor's Experiences in Vietnam by Fenton Williams (1971)
  • A Hero's Welcome: The Conscience of Sergeant James Daly versus the United States Army by James A. Daly (1975)
  • Yet Another Voice by Norman A. McDaniel (1975)
  • Thoughts about the Vietnam War by Eddie Wright (1984)

As of 1997, only 7 out of nearly 400 veteran memoirs about the Vietnam War were written by Black veterans. Each of these books is probably notable enough for an article, as each are covered with great depth by the publication "MIA: African American Autobiography of the Vietnam War". Some of the authors are likely notable, particularly Terry Whitmore (a deserter who fled Viatnam to go to Sweden) and Daly and McDaniel (both former POWs). Flagging this in case any watchers are interested. Enwebb (talk) 20:30, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

I thought someone was having a COI here, and an IP editor who removed the tag said "no not me I just read about it in a news article". So I read a news article, and wouldn't you know--they had a member who, in some coaching session with/at/for the club, said some pretty racist shit. (There's plenty more sourcing, but not much more depth.) Now, the guy worked at St. Johns too, and was fired from there, and he was suspended from the "prestigious" club--but I'm not sure it's so closely connected to the club (or the university?) that it should be in the article. I will gladly leave that to other editors. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 22:10, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Ruschell Boone

Ruschell Boone is a Black journalist for NY1 that has been covering the protests night after night. OurStreets, when we see two or three lengthy stories in reliable sources, it'll be enough —valereee (talk) 02:25, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
@Valereee:, these aren't listed on the "reliable sources" page for wikipedia but I know that list is not definitive. Would these two articles be seen as reliable? [4][5]
@OurStreets: As WP:GNG nicely lays it out, the sources have to be independent, in-depth, and reliable. The sources you've provided look independent of the author. They also look in-depth. And my personal perception is that it's typically the case that local newspapers that have been printed for a while are assumed to be reliable. My personal judgment would be that you have enough to go ahead and write an article, but I also should say that nobody can predict what will come out of a deletion discussion if someone disagrees that she is notable, so I don't want to look like I'm confidently guaranteeing anything. If you do decide to write it and want help, I'm happy to answer any questions. - Astrophobe (talk) 06:20, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
@OurStreets: A source is usually reliable when it is known to be factually accurate/have editorial oversight and is independent of the subject it is talking about (which newspapers often are). If you're feeling very unsure about a source, however, you can always ask on the reliable sources noticeboard, but from a cursory glance, I agree with Astrophobe that the sources look fine. - Whisperjanes (talk) 19:35, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
@Astrophobe: @Whisperjanes: thanks for your help! I've made an article about Ruschell Boone if you see any ways to improve it please do! Also, if anyone is willing to reach out and get permission to use a picture of her that would be awesome! OurStreets (talk) 17:23, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

Help contextualize the landmark police accountability law in California

As per this project's request, I made an article for SB 1421, which increases police transparency. The article has information about the law itself. We should expand it by adding details about the significant pushback by law enforcement and details about findings that have come to light due to this law. A discussion about this is started on the article talk page.

This WikiProject is doing great things ✊! OurStreets (talk) 03:11, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Discussion is taking place on the Lydney Park page, a page about a country estate in the UK, on the relevance of the owners' slave trade links and whether they should be covered on the page about the estate or only on the pages of the two families involved. Would appreciate more eyes on this.DrThneed (talk) 23:19, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

@DrThneed: I am still thinking about what, if anything, I have to contribute in response. However, I appreciate your cordialness, determination, and general efforts. Keep up the efforts! OurStreets (talk) 00:36, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
@OurStreets: Thank you for your support. It hasn't been an easy road but I at least feel like I have enough support to put in the proposed edit to the page now, and see what happens next. I hope that is appropriate process, I haven't been involved in this sort of back-and-forth before and I find so many of the rules about what is accepted practice on Wikipedia to be unwritten! But there are so many British country houses and historical figures with slave trade links, I really hope to make some of those links more explicit. DrThneed (talk) 02:34, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

ProQuest Historical Newspapers - Black Newspapers

The Wikipedia Library recently gained partial access to the ProQuest Historical Newspapers database. ProQuest Historical Newspapers includes the ProQuest Black Newspapers collection, but The Wikipedia Library does not have access to that collection yet. Access to ProQuest Black Newspapers will enable Wikipedians to improve biographies on prominent African-Americans and expand coverage on major events in American history from an African-American perspective. It has been suggested on The Wikipedia Library Card Platform to give Wikipedians full access to ProQuest Historical Newspapers through The Wikipedia Library. Editors who wish to contribute towards Wikipedia gaining access to ProQuest Black Newspapers are encouraged to express their support here. Thanks. Krakkos (talk) 10:19, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Derrick Scott

Is there an article on the 2019 killing of Derrick Scott?[1] I cannot find one. If there isn't, should one be created? 119.18.2.248 (talk) 03:07, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Likely one should be created; at present we only have I can't breathe#Derrick Scott. — Bilorv (Black Lives Matter) 19:18, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Concern over upcoming DYK hook

A hook for the article on Dixiecrat Fielding "We shall insist upon segregation regardless of consequences"/"make your homes in some other state" Wright is coming up on the main page. The hook selected seems to be just about the only fact from the article that could make it seem like he was somehow at odds with racism/the Klan: "... that Mississippi Governor Fielding L. Wright had a $50,000 lawsuit filed against him by an Imperial Emperor of the Ku Klux Klans of America?".

It'll appear on the main page tomorrow. Not getting much of a response at WT:DYK. Maybe I'm alone in seeing this as an issue, but the timing isn't great for [arguably] whitewashing a hardline racist on the main page.

I also had some concerns with the article itself, which was recently promoted to GA without mentioning segregation in the text. (To the primary author's and reviewer's credit, when I brought it up on the talk page they offered to change it based on sources I link, so I'm content to AGF). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 19:33, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Rhododendrites, scheduled to appear the 2nd, as we're back to 1-a-days, but I've suggested an ALT at Wikipedia_talk:Did_you_know#Q3_2_July_Concern_about_Fielding_Wright_hook —valereee (talk) 21:18, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Rhododendrites, thank you for raising this here; I will comment at WT:DYK and more at the article talk page. Levivich[dubious – discuss] 21:40, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Dedicated list for the names listed in BLM navbox

The list of names in the {{Black Lives Matter}} navbox template currently do not belong to a single list. I started to scope it as "List of killings of Black Americans by law enforcement officers in the United States" but began to think it might be better as "List of Black Lives Matters protests" (to be more expansive) or some combination whereof. There are plenty of sources for the connectedness of the names in question, enough to warrant a list of some kind. Your thoughts invited on its talk page. czar 03:17, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Black Power Salute

Hi all, I was doing some work on the Olympic Project for Human Rights page and relised there is no page on the Black Power Salute. There is a page for Raised fist I wondered people's opinions on creating a new page for the Black Power Salute Vs. creating a proper section in the Raised Fist page. Thanks Evertent (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:16, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Astonishing oversight, good catch. Note that Tommie Smith stated in his autobiography that it wasn't a Black Power Salute, but a "human rights salute." I would argue that a separate article is warranted, but a section on raised fist would be worthwhile too. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 19:09, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

City and state pages: mutual support/peer review?

Hi all, I'm working in relative isolation at George Floyd protests in Portland, Oregon and, to a lesser extent, at George Floyd protests in Oregon. Questions are arising about how to frame the page in the lead section, and what section structure in the article is ideal. These discussions draw few participants, but I'd imagine the same discussions are underway at many of the related pages.

Is there somebody actively working on one of the state or city pages, who would like to work together? I'd like to have an informal partner, to review one another's pages, learning from and offering suggestions to one another. Let me know if you'd be interested in doing this. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 19:13, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

Strike for Black Lives

Recently created a page for the Strike for Black Lives, with several news reports from some reputable sources, looking for help expanding the page. Feel like it could be considered an important article in the scope of this WikiProject. Thanks, JJonahJackalope (talk) 19:51, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

Question regarding BLM template

I asked a question regarding the inclusion of non-US cases in the BLM template. If anyone wishes to voice their opinion on this please join the discussion here. --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 07:53, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

French BLM pages

Like WhinyTheYounger pointed out here a few months ago, the highly active and salient BLM activity in France is not covered well at all on English Wikipedia. In contrast, on the French Wikipedia, I find they often have really detailed pages that are very badly sourced and extremely unbalanced, often ending up in territory that on English Wikipedia we would very likely consider attack pages. I've been trying to find relevant pages with an OK core to translate, but it's been really surprisingly hard, so I'm posting here to say: I'd be grateful in anybody has leads on BLM-relevant BLPs from other languages that could be brought over to English, beyond really broad lists like this one. As an example, I just translated what turned out to be a stub for Fania Noël, since sadly there was barely any salvageable material from the much longer French page (the main contributor to which later got indeffed for POV-pushing ...) - Astrophobe (talk) 04:17, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

Should the portal be recreated?

There used to be a portal Portal:Black Lives Matter but it was deleted because it was an automatically-created navbox portal. The MfD discussion which resulted in its deletion proposed that all portals up for deletion in that discussion be "deleted without prejudice to recreating a curated portal not based on a single navbox," which leaves the possibility of recreating the portal open.

A comparable WikiProject to this one, WikiProject COVID-19, set up its own portal, so I think recreating the BLM portal is worth considering. Should it be recreated? DraconicDark (talk) 22:06, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

The Black Lives Matter portal

A little while ago, I asked on this talk page whether the Black Lives Matter portal should be recreated, but got no response. In the meantime, the deleted portal has been recreated in my userspace (Pharos helped provide a copy). The portal was deleted for being based on a single navbox, so suggestions for improving the portal from participants in this project, so that it can eventually be recreated in portal space, would be appreciated. Mythology of Benjamin Banneker

Tangentially related to this project I know, but could someone take a look at Mythology of Benjamin Banneker? An IP has taken it upon themselves to go on a deletion rampage, and it's not a subject I know anything about. Le Deluge (talk) 17:50, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

Eric Garner protest videos

Hey! I was trawling through some public records requests, and I found a ton of videos of the December 2014 Eric Garner protest in Boston. These might be useful for illustrating the relevant articles. Find them here. Jlevi (talk) 13:06, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Note that these are (probably) in the public domain due to the fact that public record usually means public domain in MA. Jlevi (talk) 23:35, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Just created 1961 Celtics boycott since it's being cited in news as a precedent for August's NBA boycott

I'd seen several mentions in the news that the sports boycott following the Kenosha police incident has precedent in a 1961 boycott by players of the Boston Celtics. I couldn't find much about it on Wikipedia, so I pulled up some sources and started a stub at 1961 Celtics boycott. I just wanted to get the ball rolling, but would welcome others to help expand it.
