I have around no time right now, will weigh in more fully soon. Suggest getting a drive page up very soon regardless of where it is to give time to fill it out and get the improvement drive going. Fully support the project in whatever form it ends up. Would recommend making the drive with a rather broad scope to allow as many people to contribute as possible. Merger

• I had been drafting up a BLM edit-a-thon just as you made this, good job. I had originally been making it as part of WP:WikiProject African Diaspora. I do wonder, would this project perhaps be better as a task force of African Diaspora?   CaptainEek, Thanks. I'm not opposed to converting this project into a task force if that's what other editors prefer, but I think a standalone WikiProject is fine if active. Not to mention, finding Wikipedia:WikiProject Black Lives Matter is easier than finding Wikipedia:WikiProject African diaspora/Black Lives Matter task force or whatever similar title. • Yeah, I'd support making this a taskforce/subpage. Either way an infusion of attention is needed, but it'd be good/respectful to tie in with existing efforts. Edit-a-thon/Article drive/??

I was just about to make Wikipedia:WikiProject African diaspora/BLM Edit-a-thon 2020, but this page was created and so I have paused for now. Based on discussion at WP:VPR, I was thinking that we ought create a month long editathon, which could then get publicized, and hopefully draw in editors both old and new. Question: Could "image contest" be illustrations/logos? I've seen some really powerful imagery for the Black Lives Matter movement, whether the single raised fist, the raised fist in many colors, the phrase in varying opacities... Is Wikipedia institutionally racist?

Hello potential allies. Educated black person here. Thought I should get that out of the way, since we still seem to be in the era when that matters. What percentage of editors of this project are black, and how does that compare to the demographics of the USA, or even the world? Nobody has to reveal anything they don't want to, it is possible to measure this with surveys. Why the slavish reliance on "reliable sources" by Wikipedia, when their ingrained biases are clearly part of the systemic oppression that BLM is attempting to highlight? Is Colin Kapearnick described by Wikipedia as a civil rights activist because he self-identified as such, or because the mainstream media put him in that box because it is perhaps more convenient and less uncomfortable than human rights activist, reflecting the minor victory of having Wikipedia describe BLM as a human rights movement (although perhaps even that was only as a result of the generous mainstream media recognising their own bias?). Why is it even being suggested by this very project's introduction that somehow it's about political views, as in you must put them aside if you want to be a part of this project, regardless of whether you're looking to vote for the party that supports black lives, or, um, opposes black lives? In reality, clearly political objectives (stuff where voting red or blue makes a difference) form only part of the BLM movement's goals, and an arguably minor or secondary role to the far more important goal of basic respect for black people's right to life and basic human dignity. As we all now must surely recognise is the entire reason the name was chosen, no balancing effort in the name of neutrality required, only an acknowledgment that misrepresenting the name was for a very long time the chosen tactic of those who seemed to think it was, in the main, a political movement. There's clearly no political solution to a middle class white Democratic voting woman believing the cops are her personal anti-black protection force, black folks unfortunately have to persuade people like that to become allies, as a far more realistic means of achieving their political goals than reaching out to others slightly less amenable demographics. Does any of this even appear in reliable sources, such that this project might improve related Wikipedia articles with their contents, or is that just a bridge too far at this time? I personally can't even begin to want to get involved, when it is so clearly still the case that Wikipedia is operating under the several flawed assumptions herein of what neutrality is, and what it is not. I am quietly confident BLM has pushed the needle far enough that there must be at least some reliable sources out there which define a refusal to, for want of a better word, blackout Wikipedia in support of the movement, qualifies as taking a political stand against whatever it is that Wikipedia defines as the political aspect of BLM. Silence is violence, and all that. I saw that refusal, and I took it for what I know it was, deep down, right down in that place that white women hadn't dared to examine before, and Wikipedia perhaps needs to accept you're not going to persuade black folks it was something else, especially not if you have not yet even persuaded a statistically significant number of them to get involved with your proposed alternative, namely improving Wikipedia articles. Especially, especially, under the restriction of respecting only what the mainstream media says. If these are the non-negotiable principles on which Wikipedia was founded, as was said repeatedly in the denial of a blackout, then perhaps Wikipedia needs to ask itself what is institutional racism, and am I, as a part of the Wikipedia instition, doing it right now. I was unimpressed to see that for the sole crime of knowing copyright law, I, a black person, was accused by a white editor, someone who is seemingly part of the furniture around here (and notably of a Democratic persuasion), of, believe it or not, attempting to "whitewash" Wikipedia. It was not a direct slur, it was only loosely directed at unspecified newcomers. But as the cap seemed to fit his intended target in my case, I decided to speak my mind, given the racial overtones and the supreme irony, especially since the issue was related to BLM. And what do you know, not only did the person ignore it, literally every other Wikipedia editor has too. Now, I won't say this is the worst example of being dehumanised and devalued I have ever seen, but this is Wikipedia, a text only medium, so if you had to rank the possible ways a person can be dehumanised and devalued here, while that probably wouldn't be first (racial slurs) or even second (race based discrimination), it might very well be the third. A white man, who is totally ignorant of the law surrounding the issue he was stomping around in, demanding others be clear with him as to why he couldn't get his way, indirectly accusing me, a knowledgeable black person and newcomer to Wikipedia, being put well and truly in my place. French speakers welcome

Hi all! I recently started the article Death of Adama Traoré, who died (likely killed by) police in France in 2016, sparking France's first Black Lives Matter protests. The George Floyd solidarity protests in France right now are also honoring Traoré. I do not speak French, and there is obviously much more substantial information on the affair--especially the inconsistencies in officer testimony, prosecutorial behavior, the first medical examination of Traoré's body, along with the nature of the subsequent 2016 protests following his death--in French. Especially (but not exclusively, of course) if you have a decent French reading ability, feel free to jump on in and help expand it in any way you can. Lists of killings by law enforcement officers in the United States

Lists of killings by law enforcement officers in the United States is currently my 4th Google hit when I search for "US police killings". If the page view tool is accurate, the article got fewer than 1 average daily view before 5/29, and has seen over 200,000 views since then. According to many news sources (e.g. [1]), there were over 1000 killings by the police in the US in 2019, but Template:Lists of killings by law enforcement officers in the United States lists only 139 for the year. The navbox on all list articles, which are broken down by year and month, as well as the table in the top-level list appear to be displaying numbers generated from the table rows in Wikipedia, rather than cited statistics, which is leading to a large undercount and misleading numbers, as a result of the articles' lack of completeness. Wikipedia says lists 0 police killings in Nov. 2019, while https://mappingpoliceviolence.org/ says there were five on Nov. 1 alone. I just added 2 killings in May I knew just from following local news in my hometown of Indianapolis that were not represented. I don't know if someone is able to undertake actually making these lists comprehensive based on some of the reputable data sources out there (one possibility), but, if not, we may have to rework the approach so it is not so misleading. I note there have already been 4 separate messages left on that articles talk page recently, but it may no one is actively monitoring it, so I'm hoping someone here can check it out. • Than you so much for diving into this! I found that article and was also confused by the inclusion criteria. Seems it's not WP:GNG but rather anything sourced that Wikipedia editors have had the time to add. It seems these lists would not be dynamic, then, although it would be challenging to raise them all up to standard. I know the Washington Post tracks police shootings in the United States and has found ~1000 every year since they started tracking them (2013? 2015?), so we have that as a lower bound. 1. I need your help assessing articles in our project for quality and for importance!
2. A discussion question for you about WikiProject scope: The Shooting of Trayvon Martin and the Trial of George Zimmerman are both of interest to our project. Should articles like George Zimmerman be included in our project? On the one hand, all of the subject's notoriety comes from the shooting of Trayvon Martin, an issue of top importance for our project, and it might be important we help ensure articles like that include all the necessary information. On the other hand, the topic might not exactly inspire editors on our team. What do you think?

As news organizations are looking for stories around this cultural moment, I'm pretty optimistic reporters at major news sources (NYT, Vox, The Atlantic?, WSJ?) could be interested in a story about this WikiProject. Scope

What is the scope of this project to be? Right now we say we cover the Black Lives Matter movement, but I forsee that we could cover a wider range of issues, perhaps taking on some of the topics that had previously been shoved into WP:Wikiproject African Diaspora simply because they had nowhere better to go. Thus I see some overlap with civil rights issues, and potentially undercovered historical figures, in a similar way to what WP:WIR does. Thoughts? • Another project with which we might start to overlap would be WP:WikiProject Civil Rights Movement. I'd err on the side of staying focused on the recent movement, so we can focus on doing an exceptional job with those articles. • Agree with MassiveEartha. I personally support the focus being a bit wider, while still keeping a main/core focus on the BLM movement and black-related activism/human rights issues. The broader the scope, the broader the participation.   • I also want to mention that the June edit-a-thon page already contains (under the "Missing articles" section) lists of black people and black organizations -- so this project already seems to have editors interested in a wider scope. I think some editors might be interested in this project in a broader sense, such as it partially being a platform (like Women in Red, mentioned above) where it tries to tackle the issue of black-related Racial bias on Wikipedia, or at the least, also tackle underrepresented black history. Even the Black Lives Matter website mentions that they are about "creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy" and building "local power" in addition to combating violence against black communities. I've been looking up the police killings of Brenda James, Trayvon Martin and others in the wake of George Floyd's murder. I could not find a category that lists all police killings of black male and female U.S. citizens. This would be an important resource to document all black individuals who were killed by the police, and allow readers to access the respective "Shooting of .." pages for all details pertaining to the incident. Articles on deaths in Swiss police custody

Hi all -- thank you for everything done in this WikiProject. As a resident of Geneva, I've been trying to document the notable deaths of black people related to Swiss police brutality. These names are some of the names invoked at Swiss BLM protests today.

Covering African cinema

Wow I like to contribute to this initiative but I need clarifications whether we can create articles only about African-Americans as a part of this project. I also hope to create more African films, African film actors, directors as I have been showing my interest towards African cinema since October 2019 after taking part in the WikiProject AfroCine/Months of African Cinema. I also noticed there is a huge bias on films whereas I observed there is a huge coverage on Hollywood, Bollywood, Kollywood industries in Wikipedia compared to the coverage about African cinema. Hi there, Abishe-- I think that work is awesome! Definitely a worthy effort toward ending coverage bias on Wikipedia. Thank you for sharing it here! It's my own opinion that this WikiProject should remain focused on the political movement and its immediate concerns (specific people, issues, events, etc.)—and African Cinema would fall outside that (not be included). I'm not sure what WikiProject would be best suited for that effort (although WP:WikiProject AfroCine seems it might be exactly what you're working)... perhaps others could chime in? —Shrinkydinks (talk) 01:29, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

Black Vietnam War vets

Hi all, I just realized today that we did not have an article about Military history of African Americans in the Vietnam War (we do for the Revolutionary and Civil Wars), so I created one. However, there seem to be a lot of underdeveloped/unexplored topics that branch out from this topic. Black troops formed a lot of solidarity groups, for example, that might be notable enough independently or as a list. What really inspired me to post here, though, was this list of memoirs published by black veterans.

• GI Diary by David Parks (1968)
• The Courageous and the Proud by Samuel Vance (1970)
• Memphis-Nam-Sweden: The Autobiography of a Black American Exile by Terry Whitmore (1971)
• Just Before the Dawn: A Doctor's Experiences in Vietnam by Fenton Williams (1971)
• A Hero's Welcome: The Conscience of Sergeant James Daly versus the United States Army by James A. Daly (1975)
• Yet Another Voice by Norman A. McDaniel (1975)
• Thoughts about the Vietnam War by Eddie Wright (1984)

As of 1997, only 7 out of nearly 400 veteran memoirs about the Vietnam War were written by Black veterans. Each of these books is probably notable enough for an article, as each are covered with great depth by the publication "MIA: African American Autobiography of the Vietnam War". Some of the authors are likely notable, particularly Terry Whitmore (a deserter who fled Viatnam to go to Sweden) and Daly and McDaniel (both former POWs). Fencers Club

I thought someone was having a COI here, and an IP editor who removed the tag said "no not me I just read about it in a news article". So I read a news article, and wouldn't you know--they had a member who, in some coaching session with/at/for the club, said some pretty racist shit. (There's plenty more sourcing, but not much more depth.) Now, the guy worked at St. Johns too, and was fired from there, and he was suspended from the "prestigious" club--but I'm not sure it's so closely connected to the club (or the university?) that it should be in the article. I'm not sure of she meets WP:GNG since it's mostly her reporting on things instead of stories about her. Can anyone help establish that she meets GNG? @Valereee:, these aren't listed on the "reliable sources" page for wikipedia but I know that list is not definitive. Would these two articles be seen as reliable? [4][5]

@OurStreets: As WP:GNG nicely lays it out, the sources have to be independent, in-depth, and reliable. The sources you've provided look independent of the author. They also look in-depth. And my personal perception is that it's typically the case that local newspapers that have been printed for a while are assumed to be reliable. My personal judgment would be that you have enough to go ahead and write an article, but I also should say that nobody can predict what will come out of a deletion discussion if someone disagrees that she is notable, so I don't want to look like I'm confidently guaranteeing anything. @OurStreets: A source is usually reliable when it is known to be factually accurate/have editorial oversight and is independent of the subject it is talking about (which newspapers often are). Help contextualize the landmark police accountability law in California

As per this project's request, I made an article for SB 1421, which increases police transparency. The article has information about the law itself. We should expand it by adding details about the significant pushback by law enforcement and details about findings that have come to light due to this law. A discussion about this is started on the article talk page.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers - Black Newspapers

The Wikipedia Library recently gained partial access to the ProQuest Historical Newspapers database. ProQuest Historical Newspapers includes the ProQuest Black Newspapers collection, but The Wikipedia Library does not have access to that collection yet. Access to ProQuest Black Newspapers will enable Wikipedians to improve biographies on prominent African-Americans and expand coverage on major events in American history from an African-American perspective. It has been suggested on The Wikipedia Library Card Platform to give Wikipedians full access to ProQuest Historical Newspapers through The Wikipedia Library. Concern over upcoming DYK hook

A hook for the article on Dixiecrat Fielding "We shall insist upon segregation regardless of consequences"/"make your homes in some other state" Wright is coming up on the main page. The hook selected seems to be just about the only fact from the article that could make it seem like he was somehow at odds with racism/the Klan: "... that Mississippi Governor Fielding L. Wright had a $50,000 lawsuit filed against him by an Imperial Emperor of the Ku Klux Klans of America?".

It'll appear on the main page tomorrow. Not getting much of a response at WT:DYK. Maybe I'm alone in seeing this as an issue, but the timing isn't great for [arguably] whitewashing a hardline racist on the main page.

I also had some concerns with the article itself, which was recently promoted to GA without mentioning segregation in the text. Dedicated list for the names listed in BLM navbox

The list of names in the {{Black Lives Matter}} navbox template currently do not belong to a single list. I started to scope it as "List of killings of Black Americans by law enforcement officers in the United States" but began to think it might be better as "List of Black Lives Matters protests" (to be more expansive) or some combination whereof. There is a page for Raised fist I wondered people's opinions on creating a new page for the Black Power Salute Vs. creating a proper section in the Raised Fist page. Astonishing oversight, good catch. Note that Tommie Smith stated in his autobiography that it wasn't a Black Power Salute, but a "human rights salute." City and state pages: mutual support/peer review?

Hi all, I'm working in relative isolation at George Floyd protests in Portland, Oregon and, to a lesser extent, at George Floyd protests in Oregon. Questions are arising about how to frame the page in the lead section, and what section structure in the article is ideal. These discussions draw few participants, but I'd imagine the same discussions are underway at many of the related pages.

Is there somebody actively working on one of the state or city pages, who would like to work together? I'd like to have an informal partner, to review one another's pages, learning from and offering suggestions to one another. French BLM pages

Like WhinyTheYounger pointed out here a few months ago, the highly active and salient BLM activity in France is not covered well at all on English Wikipedia. In contrast, on the French Wikipedia, I find they often have really detailed pages that are very badly sourced and extremely unbalanced, often ending up in territory that on English Wikipedia we would very likely consider attack pages. I've been trying to find relevant pages with an OK core to translate, but it's been really surprisingly hard, so I'm posting here to say: I'd be grateful in anybody has leads on BLM-relevant BLPs from other languages that could be brought over to English, beyond really broad lists like this one. As an example, I just translated what turned out to be a stub for Fania Noël, since sadly there was barely any salvageable material from the much longer French page (the main contributor to which later got indeffed for POV-pushing ...) - Astrophobe (talk) 04:17, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

Should the portal be recreated?

There used to be a portal Portal:Black Lives Matter but it was deleted because it was an automatically-created navbox portal. The MfD discussion which resulted in its deletion proposed that all portals up for deletion in that discussion be "deleted without prejudice to recreating a curated portal not based on a single navbox," which leaves the possibility of recreating the portal open.

A comparable WikiProject to this one, WikiProject COVID-19, set up its own portal, so I think recreating the BLM portal is worth considering. Should it be recreated? DraconicDark (talk) 22:06, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

A little while ago, I asked on this talk page whether the Black Lives Matter portal should be recreated, but got no response. In the meantime, the deleted portal has been recreated in my userspace (Pharos helped provide a copy). The portal was deleted for being based on a single navbox, so suggestions for improving the portal from participants in this project, so that it can eventually be recreated in portal space, would be appreciated. Just created 1961 Celtics boycott since it's being cited in news as a precedent for August's NBA boycott

I'd seen several mentions in the news that the sports boycott following the Kenosha police incident has precedent in a 1961 boycott by players of the Boston Celtics. I couldn't find much about it on Wikipedia, so I pulled up some sources and started a stub at 1961 Celtics boycott. I just wanted to get the ball rolling, but would welcome others to help expand it.
