Doctor Who media hat-trick

Cribbins is to my mind the only actor to have appeared in Doctor Who in all three licensed media of TV (Wilf Mott, throughout 10th Doctor era), film (Tom Campbell, Dalek Invasion Earth 2150AD) and radio (Arnold Korns, The Horror Of Glam Rock, BBC Radio 7). That's correct. The Swedish name of the film is "Picassos äventyr" and can be found under Bernard's entry at IMDB. Any idea whether he was speaking English or Swedish? He was also in a film which was in French and English (Allez France!) although I don't know which he spoke in that film. If he was speaking a foreign (to him) language in those movies, that could be a point worth including. Opinions, others?

I remember seeing him in a fim in which he played a policeman. It was a drama and he was very good in it. He was investigating a murder that happenned a long time ago and discovered the murderer was the man who was now his boss in the police. You might be referring to "Dangerous Davies: The Last Detective." I haven't seen it so I can't say for certain but the information at IMDB suggests it could be.

I'm not certain whether you raise that question in relation to improving the article. If not, just a "heads up." Talk pages are basically more a place for editor-discussions than chat about the content. If what I wrote is confusing, try the guidelines here: Guidelines  :-)

Links leading nowhere

There are a number of links leading to non-existent articles. Would it be worth changing these back to text only? Most of them are in the second Television section. In the case of "The Further Adventures of Noddy", it would be possible to redirect it to a section on the Noddy page where it's listed: Noddy Entry

Also, I made a minor edit a few minutes ago but overlooked the "Explain" box. I don't know if the history can somehow be edited but figure I'll leave that be, since I'm not sure how. The edit was simply correcting a typo on the second Television entry "The Good Old Days" where the 's' had been left off the end of 'Days' and the link was therefore pointing nowhere instead of to the correct page. Rearranging entire entry may be a good idea.

If you look at the contents, you'll notice that section 1 is about his early life and sections 2, 6 and 7 are about his career. They are divided by sections covering specific aspects of his career. Also there are two sections headed "Films" (3 and 11) and two sections headed "Television" (5 and 10). Perhaps they should be merged to form two sections instead of the four. I'm still getting the hang of the policies here and how to edit correctly so I'll leave it for more experienced editors to make those decisions and carry out any action decided upon. I don't know whether there are any polls or even some kind of "official" recognition as such but Bernard Cribbins must surely be among the top of any number of lists of "Britain's Favourite X". Does anyone have information about this kind of thing? 79.79.242.250 (talk) 19:43, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

Place of birth

In his 2018 book Bernard Who?: 75 Years of Doing Just About Everything Cribbins says he was born in Oldham. He also says, on page 22: "We'd recently moved from Smith Street to a new council house in a place called Derker". He doesn't actually say he was born in Smith Street (which is in the Spring Hill area), but this suggests to me that he was not born in Derker. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:52, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

Parents dates

An IP user has changed his mother's birth from 1897 to 1898. But are there sources for any of those dates ? They are not mentioned in the Mirror article shown as source. -- Beardo (talk) 16:37, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

The Daily Mirror is probably not the best of sources anyway. But you're right, it gives no dates for Ethel, just saying: "He was born in Oldham and grew up close to poverty with two siblings, cotton weaver mum Ethel and "Jack of all trades" father John." Even The Times here says much the same: "Cribbins grew up in Oldham, Lancashire, the middle of three children (he has outlived his sisters, Veronica and Kathleen). His father, Jack, was a handyman who did a lot of property repair. His mother, Ethel, was a weaver in a cotton mill." Indeed, why would a newspaper article ever include the years of the parents' births. It's the kind of detail you'd get from Who Do You Think You Are?, but Cribbins has never been featured. If you search FreeBMD for any "Ethel Clarkson" births in 1897 and 1898, only one was born in Oldham and that's this one in Sept 1897. That doesn't prove much though, and of course it's WP:OR. Knighthood Petitions

Since 2013, there have been a least 3 online petitions calling for Cribbins to be awarded a Knighthood:

You don't. Anyone can create a petition for any reason, and the mere existence of these petitions are not enough for them to be included in the article. If independent, third-party reliable sources report on them, then, and only then, can they be considered for inclusion into the article. As of now, though, they're simply not notable enough for inclusion into the article, especially considering one has less than 1000 signatures and another less than 100. When did Cribbins really die?

His death was announced on 28 July. If one source says 27 July, I would imagine that they've done better fact checking for it, as Telegraph has probably assumed that date death announced = date he died. But don't know for sure. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:41, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

FWIW, the Times's obit also says he died today, not yesterday. Like Joseph2302, my suspicion with these sorts of disputes is that the sources that give a date other than the date of announcement are correct, but it's not exclusively true. I'm not sure if WP allows original research, but the best person to contact would be his agent, I would imagine. It was him that made the announcement, so I would presume he'd know the facts more than the newspapers would. I've run into this before especially in cases where somebody passes away late at night or in their sleep. Usually what I do is wait a few days and if there is a correction to be made to the date, it's usually done by then. I would also take dates in some sources such as the Times of London or the BBC to be authoritative, so if they say July 28 then it was July 28. But double-checking is always a good idea because we've had cases where deaths haven't been announced sometimes for weeks. Is there a WP tag for "to be confirmed"? Another factor is time zones. If a piece of US media reported last night (July 27 US time) that Cribbins had just died, well that would be July 28 UK time, of course. 23skidoo (talk) 15:23, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Cribbins' agent confirmed he died on Wednesday in a statement. A cause of death was not immediately released. Rusted AutoParts 17:19, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
