Fist/Infobox image

I don't belive that the first image of the article and the infobox as Messi with Argentina, Messi have been played 312 matches with Barça and "only" 61 with Argentina. --212.145.57.81 (talk) 10:00, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

The only legitimate reason that can warrant a change in the image is finding a better (and free) one. He is just as synonymous with Argentina as he is with Barca. Chensiyuan (talk) 11:25, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

National Team Statistics

Messi should have 62 games, 17 goals and 19 assists, please fix issue. Previous editor added one more assist than adding one more game by mistake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Omarhariri (talkcontribs) 21:51, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Done [1]. After Copa America there was 60:17+17 ([2]). Then, Messi has played 3 times, scoring 1 and assisting 3 (Ven 0+1, Nig 0+1, Chi 1+1). So now, 63:18+20. Couldn't find good summary as for example Soccernet Messi stats miss Albania match. Kahkonen (talk) 12:16, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

change of positions!

This must be reviewed again! These days Messi plays through the middle and occasionally floats out to either wing! With Argentina he is moreso midfield based but with Barca he drops deep into midfield to link with Xavi, Iniesta and Co. he shouldn't be considered a winger as he is based through the middle and nor a striker/centre forward as he drops back too far and floats around! I believe he must be changed to Second Striker or at least at it into his positions!

--Simba1409 (talk) 08:30, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

  • This guy plays where he wants and he does it like no-one in the attacking line. My opinion is that his box should read "FORWARD" or "STRIKER" (i agree with you he should not be referred to as a "WINGER"), with some specifications in introduction or in a section called "Style of play".

Regards - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 23:38, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

I feel it should read Second Striker as it gives more a view that he floats and drops deep... but winger defiantly needs to go; he plays through the middle now and floats and wide! As you said he plays where he wants!

In my opinion striker makes he sound like he is a centre forward - which he clearly is not! If it is too read striker or forward then a style of play is certainly required! I will remove winger and we can come up with a solution to the Striker/Forward/Floating/Second Striker issue

Simba1409 (talk) 23:57, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Ok, we can second striker and strikes, so everybody's happy Regards - --User:Raulseixas, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Good it's seetled then! I still feel it would be good to have a style of play section; does anyone have any sources we can cite from??

  • Just google stuff like "Messi+dribble" or "Messi+skills" and 1,000s of results will appear, you just have to be patient and look for the right one. Position / style

"Striker" only begins to encompass what he does on the pitch... He started out playing in the right wing for Barcelona, but now plays as a "False 9" in the center (a position that though he probably did not invent, he certainly made famous - it's called "the Messi role" often now). He also plays as an attacking midfielder / enganche / trequartista / number 10 for the Argentine national team. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.70.13 (talk) 19:11, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

"Striker" makes zero sense, I don't know why people keep putting it. He plays behind Villa, Alexis, or Higuain. He is not a striker. Dead men's bells (talk) 19:28, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

you should add this to article:"He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time"like, pele, maradona, cruyff, ronaldo, zidane, etc. You not need links for that, everybody know messi is one of the greatest football players of all times or at least best contemporary football player of his generation,he deserved that,if you need arguments or links you can find everywere on the net, media, declaration of legendary football players like maradona, pele, van basten, platini, cruyff,or huge coaches like fergusson, wenger, guardiola, every coach knows messi is one of the best of all times, every football player, every people in this world,i hope you add this to messi"He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time",THANKS.(86.122.230.3 (talk)wikilegend86.122.230.3 (talk))

I don't feel like looking up references, but I would think that the opening paragraph should mention that he is considered by many to be the best active player in the world. Maybe most of the world knows what the FIFA Ballon d'Or represents, but to some of us soccer-ignorant Americans, I think it would be better to just outright say he's currently the best in the world. Messi does not usually play as a forward for Argentina. Though he may be listed as such... he generally has played as a "playmaker".

108.41.43.94 (talk) 12:56, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Messi doesn't play as an out-and-out striker for Argentina. But he does feature in his national team's front three or two depending what formation they play, hence being titled as a "forward". A playmaker constitutes as the team's focal attacking player; one who "controls the flow of the team's offensive play". This should be cleared up if and when the "style of play" section of this article gets added. -- Lemonade51 (talk) 00:39, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Without a doubt he has proved to the world that he is the best player in the world, such displays against Bayer Leverkusen scoring 5 goals, making him the first ever player to score 5 goals in any champions league history. so you ask yourself is that not enough? The questions is at 24 and his making these headlines in the world of the football, then imagine what he can do at the when his at his top peak! 78.147.50.79 (talk) 13:54, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Would it also be possible to include that in the 2010-11 Champions League Season (and in the current Champions League Season) Messi equalised Ruud Van Nistelrooy's record of 12 goals in a single UEFA Champions League campaign (post 1992, obviously)? The article below also states this.

http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/1956/europe/2011/05/28/2507875/barcelonas-lionel-messi-equals-ruud-van-nistelrooys-record-of-12-[1]

Furthermore, I was wondering why the number of total assists he provided for Argentina was removed. I think it's important to restore this information. I have had difficulty finding the number of assists recorded, so could whoever had originally found the information please restore it? It used to say that he had assisted 20 goals for Argentina. I believe these statistics would be important since Messi plays almost as more of a playmaker/trequartista for Argentina, rather than a striker/2nd forward or a winger, as he has for Barcelona. Although he hasn't scored for Argentina as often as he has for Barcelona, he has created many goals for the team, proving that he has still been an integral part of the team, and a focal point for attacking plays, despite the often harsh and at times, unfair criticism he has faced due to the fact that he isn't playing the same position as he does for Barcelona, rather than under-performing. Thank you.

Number of assists for Barcelona

There is video with 92 Lionel's assists as of December 28, 2011. 7 goals were scored after Messi's assists in 2012: 1) S. Roberto at Osasuna (Copa del Rey), 2) Abidal at Real Madrid (Copa del Rey), 3) Pedro vs Real Madrid (Copa del Rey), 4) Tello vs Real Sociedad (La Liga), 5) Fabregas vs Valencia (Copa del Rey), 6) Alexis at Bayer (Champions League), 7) Xavi vs Granada (La Liga). So I think that Messi made 99 assists for Barcelona, not 94. I think that ESPN statistics which is used in article is not correrct. For example, Messi made 10 assists in 2011-12 La Liga, not 9. You can check: 1) Fabregas vs Villarreal, 2) Fabregas vs Osasuna, 3) Xavi vs Osasuna, 4) Pedro at Valencia, 5) Fabregas at Valencia, 6) Alves vs Mallorca, 7) Alexis vs Levante, 8) Alexis at Real Madrid, 9) Tello vs Real Sociedad, 10) Xavi vs Granada. --178.71.146.64 (talk) 19:33, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Inconsistency

First it states Messi made UEFA Champions League history by becoming the first player to score five goals in one match and then it states With two goals in the next round against A.C. Milan, he matched José Altafini's record of 14 goals in a single UEFA Champions League season

While in the first example you only refer to the post 1992 European Cup (UEFA Champions League) since before 1980 several players in the tournaments history have scored 5 goals. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Cup_and_UEFA_Champions_League_records_and_statistics#Five_goals_in_a_match

In the second example you refer to the entire history of the European Cup by including Altafinis 1963 score mark, the UEFA Champions League record was 12 by Ruud van Nistelrooy 2002-2003. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_Cup_and_UEFA_Champions_League_top_scorers#Winners_by_seasons

I suggest you either refer to the European Cup (1955 to present) or the UEFA Champions League (1993 to present) but not both as that just confuse readers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.54.207.34 (talk) 17:13, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
