Work for global youth studies[edit]

I think that this is an ideal page to contribute to for User:Ellieb281 and others. I got a bit bold and did some very fast edits on a "Youth Activism in the Global South." Ellie and colleagues could work to insert references and develop more detailed case studies starting from the examples I inserted or with others. "Three forms of youth activism"[edit]

Hello Ellieb281 and others. I am not in agreement that there are "three main forms of youth activism" and that they are as listed. I encourage Ellieb281 and I (yes, I'm encouraging myself :) ) to see if there is a more valid scholarly or activist categorization of "types of activism." The notion that social activism participation is "adult led" is not a universal feature of social movements, nor is it a characteristic solely of social activism. Ellieb281 has located a citation for a youth activism encyclopedia,[1] but we need to locate it to incorporate it into this article.Cheers!Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 03:06, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction[edit]

I'm editing this page for a class this semester. I'm hoping to add more information on instances of youth activism around the globe, more current instances of youth activism, and adding a new section on the use of technology and social media in youth activism. Summary of plans to edit[edit]

I have decided to narrow my interest of youth involvement in activism to edit the Wikipedia page Youth Activism. The article has a great start, but it needs more development. I also feel there needs to be a section added about the ways in which you get involved in activism, such as through social media, and should be a main point of the article. Also reading the article there are a few small errors and organization that needs refining. There also isn't a lot of information on youth activism from the past 10-20 years, so more current information needs to be added.

I have found quite a few scholarly sources on instances of global youth activism. Such as

  • "Redefining youth activism through digital technology in Singapore"[1]
  • "Political activism of Palestinian Youth: Exploring individual, Parental, and Ecological Factors"[2],
  • "Video Blogging and Youth Activism in Malaysia"[3], and
  • "Creating the Quiet Majority? Youth and Young People in the Political Culture of the Cuban Revolution"[4].

I feel these are great start to show not only youth activism around the globe, but also the use of technology and social media in the spread of youth activism. The article only covers a few countries, I would like to expand on this section to cover multiple instances of youth activism.

I hope to add more sections to the Global youth activism heading, such as Cuba, Egypt, Palestine and Malaysia. I also wish to add a new section on the use of technology and social media in youth activism, which I believe is an important aspect of youth activism for the current generation and has caused a rise in youth activism. Revisons made from Class user[edit]

I changed the intro paragraph to be less of a list and more of an information on youth activism in general around the world.

I added a section on the use of technology in youth activism and deleted the forms section. Some information from the forms section was added to the overview, while some information was taken out. I added more information on the issues youth face in involvement in activism in schools. The overview section still needs work and I would appreciate feedback.

In the global youth activism section, I rearranged countries by regions and alphabetization. I feel the section from the United States should be deleted until recent case studies and information can be updated, because no information is cited and the information is not current.

Creating a Page for Environmental Youth Activism Specifically[edit]

Although this page covers youth activism broadly, I think it is necessary to make environmental youth activism its own page because of the recent surge in environmental youth activism. In this new page I will go through a history of youth activism, list some well known groups and people from the past and the present, highlight their important contributions, list any contradictory events, and create a general overview of what youth environmental activism has looked like around the world for the past 100 years. 2020 Updates[edit]

Updated: Lead Section, Tech Section, Highlights of youth activism in the 21st century, North America Section, and year 2011. A class project has improved the section to involve a modern take on youth activism by including technological advancements in society (Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok).
