User:A930913, User:Dru_of_Id, User:Legoktm, User:Bgwhite {{User:A930913/BBresolved|yes}} Comment/question: Could you clarify the cryptic message left in users talk pages? It took some seconds of scratching my head to figure out that the (out-of-the-blue and with no context) message by modifying 1 "()"s meant "by modifying one parentheses". Why not spell it out with words written in English, so that editors can read it instead of guessing the riddle? Diego (talk) 00:23, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Because the bot also gives numbers for "[]"s, "{}"s and "<>"s. I doubt "by modifying one parenthesis, two brackets, one brace, and one inequality sign" is that much better than the shorter version. Huon (talk) 21:33, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

Comment/question: The first query is about a half-open time interval . The brackets are not supposed to be matched, as the [ indicates that the start of the interval includes the point, while the ) indicates that the end of the interval does not.

The second query (in the sentence prior to point 6) is erroneous, as there is already a matching bracket.

The syntax error was a closing parenthesis without a corresponding opening parenthesis. However, I removed the entire "places of interest" section because it didn't cite any reliable sources and largely didn't explain what made those temples places of interest. The formatting issues had largely been addressed, but the article did not cite any reliable sources and had been tagged for that lack for over a week. Diff: None (BracketBot didn't change anything, just notified me); my edit (which was not erred)

Comment: The unpaired bracket/parenthesis was contained within an external link's URL, and I copied it correctly. It is not part of any text visible on the Wikipedia page, and BracketBot therefore shouldn't have detected it and notified me. SJ Morg (talk) 08:20, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

While you're right that this is a false positive, whether the bot should have notified you depends on what's more common - deliberately mismatched brackets in links or mismatched brackets in links due to typos. I don't know any statistics, but I'd say it's better to err on the side of caution and to notify a human about a possible mistake that might leave a link broken. That seems mainly a question of definitions. Since SAT's IATA and ICAO codes are still in use, it could be argued that the airline is still in operation under a new name. Comment/question: I have made the required changes but still i am facing an error promoting the subject in subjective manner and somthing like orphan article. Kindly let me know what is to be done for that

Pratiksha Khona (talk) 11:42, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

This is not a BracketBot issue, but I'd say the lead section is a prime example of "promoting the subject in a subjective manner without providing information". For example, "The group sells end-to-end creative and technical services" - that means what, precisely? Are they consultants? An animation studio? Do they rent out lighting equipment? All of the above? I have no idea. What "ends" does that talk about? Is equipment rental really a "creative service"? The source for that statement is a press release, not a reliable independent source. Content such as "Audiences worldwide and critics alike have praised Gravity 3D" also certainly requires a reliable third-party source, such as the critics bestowing the praise or, better yet, an overview article that summarizes the critical and audience reception. The page is tagged as an orphan because no other articles lint to this one. If there are other articles already mentioning Prime Focus, you should add links. Huon (talk) 22:33, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

Yes, greater-than signs are a known issue; the bot keeps an eye on them because they're used for HTML tags or footnotes, where a mismatch can make entire paragraphs vanish, but using them as "greater than" will then lead to false positives. Sorry about that. Huon (talk) 15:44, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

@BerthaPierce: The code for links to other Wikipedia articles is subtly different from the code for external links. See Help:Link for more details on both types of links. I have repaired the one you added, which in the end had a surplus "l" (it was only ".htm") and a missing opening square bracket. Huon (talk) 01:02, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

@Lynda Applegate: First of all, my condolences. I have changed the place of residence based on the obituary, but the article has severe problems: A near-complete lack of reliable sources that discuss Carson in some detail. In particular, the lone source that comes close to meeting that standard does not mention the e-book. Are there newspaper articles discussing the book, or reviews by Publishers Weekly or the like? If no independent source mentions the book, neither should Wikipedia - in that case it's likely not a significant part of Carson's biography. Huon (talk) 23:00, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Entertainmentmanager (talk) 06:22, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

@Entertainmentmanager: First of all, BracketBot is an automated program that does nothing but notify users of potentially mismatched bracktes.
Secondly, since the image was uploaded to (and deleted from) the Wikimedia Commons, there's nothing we can do about that on Wikipedia (but see below on how to resolve this on the Commons).
Thirdly, by default everything is copyrighted unless it has explicitly been released into the public domain. And unless there is evidence of such a release, we have to assume the image is copyrighted. If Wikipedia (or the Wikimedia Commons) consciously allowed a copyrighted image that hasn't been released under a free license to stay, we too would be liable to be sued for copyright violation.
To upload the image, you will have to know who owns the copyright - probably either the photographer or whoever paid him for that photograph. Whoever owns the copyright will then have to release the image under a free license so that everybody may re-use and modify it for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Copyrighted images of living persons can only be used if they have been released under such a license. A standard release form is at WP:Declaration of consent for all enquiries; it's probably easiest if the copyright holder or a legal representative writes an email (from an official email address) with the image and that release form to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org - then the image will be uploaded with the correct licensing tag attached. You should be aware, of course, that when you upload images to the Commons you sign away so many rights that for many purposes it ceases to be "your property" (though technically the copyright remains with the original copyright holder). In particular, you have no right whatsoever to not have the image deleted - it was uploaded to the Wikimedia Foundation's servers, and the Foundation (via the community of editors) can delete whatever it wants from its own servers.
Fourthly, Wikipedia content should be based on reliable third-party sources such as newspapers or movie magazines, and you should add inline citations so our readers can easily check which of the references supports which of the article's statements. See Help:Referencing for beginners for more on how to easily add nicely-formatted footnotes. In fact, for biographies of living persons such as the Prachee Adhikari article, inline citations are not just a nice extra but a requirement.
Fifthly, you seem to be confused about the edit history and seem to claim that I made various changes that I didn't make. This is the only edit I made to the article, and all I did was remove some unsourced content and an utterly unreliable source and rewrite some other content based on what the Times of India had to say. Our readers can check that source and confirm that it says what I claimed it says. I didn't change anything about Prachee's theater background or videos she appears in. I would appreciate it if you didn't misrepresent my actions. Huon (talk) 16:53, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

The source code is very weird, but it solving a convoluted problem.

The bot should ignore characters between <source>...</source> tags Derek farn (talk) 23:19, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

That depends. What's more likely within those tags: Deliberately mismatched brackets, or brackets mismatched by accident? If it's the latter, the bot should arguably notify users about such mismatches, too. Huon (talk) 00:38, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
@Derek farn and Huon: Am I right in saying that bracket mismatch inside source and code tags can't take out half a page? 930913(Congratulate) 13:13, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
That depends on your definition of "take out". If a bracket is missing in the </source> tag, which could arguably get interpreted as "inside source tags", things may get interesting. Or if you add a reference inside code tags and forget a bracket there, you can make entire paragraphs vanish. Huon (talk) 18:41, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

I see no indication that you uploaded an image. If the image is freely licensed, which for an image from the 1970s is rather unlikely, you should upload it to the Wikimedia Commons via their Upload Wizard. I am "State Champion" and just in the last two or three days have made two different edits to the Barry Switzer page. This is the first time I have ever tired to do anything on WIKI other than read--but the information on Barry's early and family background (same as MY background) was totally incorrect--so I fixed it to correspond to reality. Then someone added that absurd section about his being racist against whites--ignoring athleticism--and I had to respond. I am a retired lawyer and computer illiterate and do not have any idea what all of those "squiglies" on the talk page even represent. Help? In plain English can you tell me what I need to do??????? (State Champion (talk) 13:32, 23 March 2014 (UTC))

@State Champion: The bot notified you about mismatched parentheses because you had closing parentheses in your i), ii), iii) list with no corresponding opening parentheses. Arguably that's a false positive because those parentheses are not supposed to belong to matched pairs, but still it's not the best style. That said, you removed reliably sourced content - that Switzer said he'd never recruit a white quarterback - and instead added your personal opinion on how Switzer was misunderstood by people "not listening closely". That simply is not acceptable. We're not here to defend peoples' reputations against the consequences of their own remarks, but to summarize what reliable third-party sources report about a person. Or, more bluntly: If Switzer says stupid things, it's not for us to explain away his comments. Huon (talk) 16:32, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello,

Apologies but I am new to this!

I have updated the above page to include facts and figures and have referenced all of my entries. Unfortunately, I appear to have input the references incorrectly but am not sure how to correct this. Please advise.

Thank you.

Fixed. PJRowling, you need to put two curly braces at the end of the citation. Also, all parameter names in citations, like |date=, should be in all lower case, like |date=, not |Date=. Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia! – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:55, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

@Polodude10: As a matter of principle, if you disagree with someone else's edits, you should discuss them on the article's talk page. In this case, however, the issue was not notability, but rather the lack of sources to verify that all those people indeed were alumni. The correct code for that template would be {{MSW3 Hutterer|id=13600037 |pages=216}}, which would look like this:

However, that book doesn't serve to verify even half of what you cited it for, and you had also removed the lead, and your grammar was problematic. For a combination of those reasons, mainly the referencing, I reverted your change. Huon (talk) 14:36, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

@Alanfromwakefield: I have done some copyediting, but that article had severe problems of original research that may not be fully resolved. Wikipedia content should be based on what reliable sources report, not on our own assessment. Contradicting what the sources say (because we know better than the literature?) is not appropriate. Huon (talk) 11:31, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

1) I note your comments but can’t understand your reference to problems of original research. I can confirm that ALL the data comes from responsible and reliable sources e.g. books (mainly yearbooks), results in newspapers, match programmes, official club archives and similar, and all the sources are cited. Where there are conflicts (like different attendance figures being quoted, or different venues or dates), I note these where possible (even though many may be printing/copying/typingerrors)

2) With reference to your comment re “own assessment”, I assume this refers to the comment on the “top” teams, which I admit was not as clear as it could have been, however, and I’m hoping you can help out on this :-

Fact – the official literature, and publicity blurb etc. state that the contestants comprised "the top four sides from each county", based on the previous seasons league positions.

Which begs the question “how do you decide who are the best”. In my innocence I would assume that over the full season, the league positions don’t lie, but yet from the 1954-55 Championship Table the top Yorkshire teams are Leeds (3rd) and Halifax (4th), neither of whom took part in this competition. Looking at the Yorkshire League table the same two clubs appear in 1st and 2nd place. Even looking at the performances in the various other cup competition, does not lift other clubs above these two. It may well be that it was just “advertisers licence” or that the top clubs actually declined the invite, but as information on the competition is extremely sparse (it has taken many years to obtain that which was included), I cannot trace any comments which would confirm these options.

It is not my assessment, but the fact that there is a discrepancy, and I feel that this discrepancy should be noted, so how can this are done, or do you not think that it is necessary? Alanfromwakefield (talk) 17:16, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Diff:[your edit]

Comment/question: Well first, thanks to you A930913 and your BracketBot for catching my syntax error (mismatched brackets). I have corrected it, and will check more carefully in future. Two questions: 1- Before pairing up the offending brackets, I tested the syntax-challenged wikilink, and found it worked as expected despite having a solo "[" and one end and paired "]]"s at the other. How could this be? Then does it really matter? I think you could confirm this test by clicking the uncorrected link at the diff you provided (602911988). 2- My prior edit to the same article (on the same date, April 5) also added two other external links in the same paragraph as the offending link your bot caught. In these two links - to the music review sites Metacritic and ANTI - I surrounded the link address with single brackets [ and ]. At least they paired up [ and ] correctly, but as single, not double brackets. I've now "fixed" these links by doubling up their brackets too, but I'm not clear if single brackets sometimes work for Wikilinks, or whether I need to distinguish between two kinds of link - one pair of brackets vs double brackets. Want to offer me some advice, or even a pointer to the directions I need to read? Thanks, Bookerj (talk) 21:27, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

@Bookerj: Single brackets work for external links, where code like [http://www.google.com Google] will give: Google. Double brackets are required for links to other Wikipedia articles, where [[Google]] will give: Google. See Help:Link for more details. Huon (talk) 23:51, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

Comment/question: Thanks, you did a swell job. I just know they needed to be done, but I just could not figure out how to do it.

I wonder what you think about ... "The most famous Junker was Chancellor Otto von Bismarck" who was actually removed by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1890. Wilhelm and his court would be Junkers, and they disapproved of von Bismarck. The Wiki "Junkers" describes what a Junker was, and Otto von Bismarck actually worked against them. I think the sentence is misleading, where you might read von Bismarck created the first welfare state in the modern world, with the goal of gaining working class support...one might think was was a Junker idea too...where this helping the lower classes actually got him fired. I don't think the note about von Bismarck being a Junker is appropriate under this Wiki...I would rather see a 'typical' Junker being shown as an example. 184.100.193.78 (talk) 04:59, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

I assume you're Joraejean; you edited here while logged out and without leaving links to specific diffs. I had a look at your edits to the Junker page, and I find them highly problematic. Bismarck clearly was a Junker, a politically conservative land-owning royalist aristocrat who was all too willing to lead his peasants against the liberal uprising in Berlin in 1848. And he didn't create the welfare state because he "believed in Social Democracy", quite the contrary. Bismarck despised democracy, and one of the reasons for the creation of the welfare state was that Bismarck hoped it would undermine the influence of the Socialist Party, the progenitor of Germany's modern Social Democrats. The other tools Bismarck used agains the Socialists include the Anti-Socialist Laws. That said, even if Bismarck's policies had been aimed against the Junkers, that still would not make himself less of a Junker. Huon (talk) 21:29, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

Forgive me but your questions & forms are, as far as I am concerned, in a different language, i.e., "Wikipediaese"! I don't understand how to use the forms and therefore I'm simply writing in plain English. If you have questions about my comments, please contact me by e-mail or telephone so that I may have an intelligent conversation with a human being. Why is there such a weak-wristed comment about confusion over the place of death of Governor Anderson. It would appear to me that at some point someone saw "Portland" and incorrectly, as well as ignorantly identified it as Portland, Oregon. I see nothing in Mr. Anderson's record that indicates he ever was in Oregon. G_d help us if he had died in a town name "Springfield" for which I understand there are more than fifty towns by that name in the U.S.!! Why isn't common sense applied by using the nearly contemporaneous 1893 reference of [1] If one sites the "Biographical Directory of the United States Congress" as an authority, I fear they've bought the CON in Congress, where unfortunately some bureaucrat has probably relied upon the oft repeated error referring to Portland, Oregon, which may have started with Wikipedia's inadvertent error. Many other so-called reference sites identify Wikipedia as the source of their information. Again, I am confident that the source of information from Maine, Anderson's home state and only removed a dozen years from his late 19th century death, is the correct and authoritative one. BP OMowe (talk) 18:53, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

@BP OMowe: How does keeping the notes accurate depend on there being one closing parenthesis before the notes and one after them? References should come after punctuation; I have modified the articles accordingly. That said, you may want to re-check the references you added. It seems you added a Gripen-related source to the other articles. Huon (talk) 23:10, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Note and reference strictly concern the translation of the names, with no relevance to the rest of the sentences, hence I tried to make apparent by placing the notes accordingly. Not sure how else to do it, got any suggestions? BP OMowe (talk) 00:15, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
@BP OMowe: They don't also serve as sources for the Swedish name? In that case you may want to move the references within the parentheses, but not in between two closing parentheses. Huon (talk) 22:39, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

I appreciate the computer's catching three syntax errors in the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Aerospace_Control_Squadron. These have been around several years but it is good to know about them.

They occur in the lists of personnel at 1st Aero, their job descriptions (showing now jobs were defined and allocated to different ranks), and the courses offered as training in the development of the squadron's activities for the first formative years. However, a few days ago, I had occasion to look at the article and saw that, last year, someone had removed all this detailed personnel information except for the list of Squadron Commanders. I restored this information recently, but it has again been removed with the comment by BB-PB

grossly excessive level of detail - none of these people are notable

It is a matter of opinion whether, as trackers of man-made satellite, people who have done things that have never before been done in human history are or are not notable.

Is there any way to appeal this decision on the grounds that the listing provides useful historical detail not available elsewhere about the organizational progress of early satellite tracking in the US? My Ph.D. is in Management Theory so I think this is worthwhile information that should not be suppressed.

I removed the list of Commanders (as that is trivial compared to the other information) and inserted this remark):

"The historical development of the Squadron is shown by detailed listings of personnel with dates and citations. However, a Wikipedia monitor refuses to allow this level of detail. Copies of the information are available on request from the author." The list of commanders has again been restored, repacing my comment, and I have removed it as they are not notable -- it is the workers who did something special. But the commanders are again restored.

If an appeal is permitted, please tell me how to do that. seaotter6@aol.com

Any advice? Best, nigel hamilton (nigel.hamilton@umb.edu)

@Nigelhamilton: I see no edit of yours on April 4, but your edit of April 6 was reverted. It did not cite any sources, and I believe there were concerns about its factual accuracy. For all I can tell you did most of the work you're notable for before taking American citizenship, so describing you as an "American" biographer etc. seems misleading. And while you may wonder why you should need to provide sources on yourself, our readers have no way of verifying that you are indeed who you say you are, and you have an obvious conflict of interest when writing about yourself, making reliable sources all the more important to avoid giving the impression of self-promotion. In fact I'd suggest you don't edit the article about yourself directly but rather propose necessary changes on the article's talk page and let uninvolved editors decide on their appropriateness and implementation (you can use the {{edit requested}} template to summon other users to your request).
