Question from Manormedia (03:07, 20 February 2024)

hello I'm really struggling to get a proper biography image to use for my article on Angelo Molinari the actor. most of the images ive uploaded to commons violate the copyright rules. I wanted to use his photograph from IMDb. How can I upload an image that has already been poosted withouth violating the wikipedia policies? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. --Manormedia (talk) 03:07, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Hello, Manormedia. You cannot use any non-free or copyright protected photo in any article about a living person. The vast majority of contemporary photos that you find online are copyright protected, so it is your obligation to prove that any given photo is not copyright protected. You could take a photo of Molinari himself, and freely license it. You could contact Molinari or his team, and ask them to upload a freely licensed photo. But you cannot use a random photo lacking a free license. Cullen328 (talk) 03:52, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
I understand. Thank you very much for this. I was getting very discouraged. If I am able to get him to pose for a photo how would I prove that it is my original work? Manormedia (talk) 03:55, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Manormedia, the Exif data generated by your phone or camera will be sufficient. So, do not publish the photo anywhere else and do not turn off the data logging of your camera or phone. Cullen328 (talk) 04:04, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Okay great thanks so much! Manormedia (talk) 04:08, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Shreyansh Raghuwanshi (14:20, 22 February 2024)

Hello, I'm new to Wikipedia and interested in creating a new page. Could you please assist me with the process? Likely LTA disruption at WP:ANI

There's ongoing disruption on WP:ANI by user that likely gamed their way to autoconfirmed right to get around semi-protection right after recent LTA disruption by non-confirmed user. Likely needs ECP on ANI. Stylez995 (talk) 07:41, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Personal attacks directed against you on a user talk page

Hi!

Don't ask why I was snooping around the block log, there were no recent updates to the articles I was heavily editing.

Anyway, looks like IAmABigFarter is using strong curse words to 'get their point across', as well as bullying statements on their talk page against you, and presumably every other admin. I almost wonder if that's grounds for a talk page block too?

Nicole. Oh, she's elegantly clandestine... 07:24, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello, ElegantlyClandestine. Useful "snooping" is just fine. Productive editors see something a bit odd, look into it, and address any disruption that they discover. I appreciate you letting me know about this. I have revoked the editor's talk page access, because they should be discussing how to get unblocked rather than throwing a temper tantrum. I glanced at your userpage and noticed that you are considerably younger than I am. Did you notice how boring and predictable and lacking in creativity that string of insults is? I can assure you from personal experience that I heard stupid insults just like that 60 years ago, and they had zero impact on me back then and zero impact now. Thank you, and keep up the good work. If you ever have any questions about editing, please feel free to ask. Cullen328 (talk) 07:59, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for that - thick skin is absolutely useful in these times. I just don’t understand why some people lack the ability to communicate correctly. And, yeah. It’ll be a while when stuff like that is just going to be nothing for me. So far, *phobic remarks against me do not make me budge. But for other things? I have yet to work on that.
Gosh, now I wish my real grandpa’s still alive… for now, he resonates in you. <3

Where to ask about WP:PROTECT?

Hi. As you're a "mentor", I thought I'd ask... :)
Where's the correct place to ask about WP:PROTECT and related Wikipedia concepts?
Thanks. galenIgh 04:11, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello, .galenIgh. "Ask about" is a bit vague. Wikipedia talk:Protection policy is the place for formal discussions about the policy. You can ask questions at the Teahouse or at the Help desk. Or, you can ask me a more specific question right here. Cullen328 (talk) 04:24, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the pointers. It has to do with a combination of ECP, ARBECR, and Talk pages. I found some recent discussion. Will do more reading, but I think WT:ARBCOM is the place. galenIgh 15:39, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Category

Hi Jim, Hope all's well with you.

I originally asked the following of another admin whom I knew worked on cats, but now I see she's blocked so I deleted my request and am turning to you. My issue is that I wanted to make a schoolteacher category for a particular school so I could put George Mallory in it, but I forgot to put the word School at the end of the category Teachers at Charterhouse a minute or so ago when I created it. As an admin, is that something you could do, i.e. change the name of the category to Teachers at Charterhouse School? Or do I need to go through a complex process of nominating it etc? Years ago, I'm sure one used to be able to do this as a humdrum ordinary editor but that facility seems to have disappeared. Thanks! Ericoides (talk) 10:07, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello, Ericoides. Nice to hear from you. To be frank, I rarely work with categories except to add them to articles. I suggest that you take this matter to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. Cullen328 (talk) 16:48, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
OK, will do. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Regards, Ericoides (talk) 17:20, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Secondly, while I am not certain they are a neo-Nazi, I strongly suspect they are some kind of ethno-nationalist. This brief lived addition to their talk page says a lot to me. Third, it is quite obvious that this editor has been around. I have no idea who they were in their previous incarnation(s), but this is not a newbie. And I note they have just vanished. Hmmm...

Hello, Mitsubishi2. Your deleted draft was jam packed full of puffery and promotional language. Promotional editing is forbidden on Wikipedia. Its only two references were to press releases issued by the company. Such overtly self-promotional references have no value on Wikipedia. We require references to multiple reliable sources that are entirely independent of the topic, and that devote significant coverage to the topic. Without furnishing such high quality references, it is not possible to write an acceptable Wikipedia article. Cullen328 (talk) 07:41, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

Blue edits

Hello again!

So I’ve been frequenting an article whose expanded information I’m waiting for to add. Though I’ve noticed something a bit strange - the latest edit at the time (linked here) is coloured blue. This is on Damaged (film), by the way. I wonder what that means? Could it be something deep or is it just a glitch in the Matrix? I’m getting kind of suspicious about that. This also happened to one of my edits.

Thanks! (This was a late addition, whoops!)

We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents. - Bob Ross

Nicole. Oh, she's elegantly clandestine... 04:20, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
Hello, ElegantlyClandestine, known as "Nikki". I have no knowledge, expertise or opinion of almost all websites, other than Wikipedia and my own website. A barnstar for you!

The Admin's Barnstar
While I may disagree with one of your recent actions (slightly), I am also well aware negative feedback is the norm here, and nobody expresses gratitude for the many helpful and uncontroversial actions Wikipedians do (here, you). Hence, I want you to know that I am grateful for all the mostly thankless admin-and-other activities you do. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:23, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
Piotrus, that is very kind of you, and I really appreciate it. I can assure you that if the other editor in question chooses to appeal their block, I will evaluate their appeal with an open mind. Cullen328 (talk) 02:41, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
I also want to say that I do not edit for positive feedback although it is always nice to get. I edit to improve the encyclopedia, and that is its own reward. Good faith, thoughtful feedback from respected editors like you makes me revisit my thinking and decisions, and I try to keep an open mind. The corollary is that negative feedback does not bother me very much. Negative feedback from trolls, vandals and POV pushers just makes me laugh briefly. I do take the occasional threat of violence seriously, though. Cullen328 (talk) 02:56, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
As someone who had to face all of those - yes, including the latter - let's hope for more of the positive feedback. Nobody edits Wikipedia for it - we would starve to death - but I believe lack of "wikilove" or such is an enduring problem in our community that reduces our retention rate for editors. (I even wrote an academic paper on that few years ago [1]). Anyway, keep up the good job :) Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:23, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Barnstar of Diplomacy
In general for your particular brand of diplomatic straight talk, but specifically for The "deez" remark is an obvious reference to "deez nuts" memes which derive from the lyrics of a 30 year old Dr. Dre gangsta rap song that discusses a woman's facial contact with testicles while performing fellatio. It is an inappropriate allusion to use while interacting with another editor, which is such champion wikivoice I feel it ought to be framed. asilvering (talk) 18:34, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
By the way, I shared this exchange with a non-wikipedian friend as an example of wikipedia's "polite but direct" communication ideals, and she wants to know how you'd explain that glomping is unacceptable behaviour, if you'll indulge us. -- asilvering (talk) 18:38, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
Asilvering, frankly, I had never heard the word "glomping" but was immediately reminded of "glamping", which is a portmanteau of "glamorous camping". It refers to people who willingly spend $300.00 per night to sleep in a fancy yurt or tipi. So, Google informed me that "glomping" is a term for sudden violent hugging. Well, violence is bad. Then, I checked Urban Dictionary which is not a reliable source but is often informative on such matters. I know almost nothing about anime and manga. There is a secondary definition of Living in an RV while on someone else’s property, using their space and/or resources for free. (A hybrid of ‘glamping’ and ‘glomming’.) So, the circle has closed and our vocabulary lesson is complete. "Hybrid" in this context appears to be a synonym of "portmanteau". Cullen328 (talk) 19:03, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
I shall never again read the word "glomping" without associating it with the modern version of a party at Le hameau de la Reine. Though, with luck, I will never again read the word "glomping". -- asilvering (talk) 19:45, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

Persistent editor on Damsel (2024 film)

Hello again!

Mike and I were editing on the same article as shown on the topic title - a film, to simplify things. Then there’s this user who thinks their ‘special review’ should stay there because it’s ‘reputable’. To me and Mike? It wasn’t. It was a Wix website, are they kidding us for this?

If there’s anything me or Mike can do, tell either of us either on my talk page or his talk page. But if it’s something you should do, please go ahead. Thanks again!

I apologise in advance if my tone seems to be a bit rushing or a bit demanding. Perhaps it’s just me being a bit too full of myself too.

What to do about IP that keeps adding Islamic honourifics

Hi, I'm QwertyForest! I have noticed that 80.5.35.232 has been repeatedly adding Islamic honourifics to the article Judgement Day in Islam. Their edits have been reverted a total of 4 times in the space of a hour, twice by me, and they have 3 warnings on their talk page, yet they have added them in again. Considering the situation, is dispute resolution or AN/I more appropriate? QwertyForest (talk) 16:02, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
