Hi - thanks I see you finished off the Castelli article - 'fraid I ended up not being able to do much on this drive. Checked it through - there is one sentence I can't work out - 3rd in the 'The battle of Huaqui' section - haven't changed it because don't know what it should say, but put a note on the discussion. Thanks, so nice to have a cheerleader-friend. :) I have been doing short articles to try to jack up the drive totals (I find them using CatScan). But folks showed up to edit on the weekend, so I was able to edit Tony Soprano, just for fun. And today I did a couple of tricky ones about India; might as well, as I already know some of the lingo, and am able to extract the meaning. I was just reading the front page and happened to check what events might come up in tomorrows "on this day" - Imagine my surprise when I read that America invaded Canada on 12 July! Even more to my amazement was that we (Canada and Britain) then launched an attack which captured Detroit! Sorry I missed your post, I was fixing refs and other problems as well as doing a 5.5 hour edit on Blade Runner (Oh how I wish it counted towards the drive :¬) to try and get it through the FAR. I am off to bed now, but will watch that tomorrow when I get up. Those images are really disheartening, I cannot believe how the US is abandoning its heritage-though I suspect that, as a relatively new country, they possibly don't realise what a loss they are suffering. Some of those buildings would be fine for me to live in, just for the architecture. As for nerdy, don't worry, I think all of us Wikipedians are a little that way inclined lol :¬) Night! Wow, censorship has gone overboard, "wipe my (blank) ..." (I assume it was "ass") What's all this then? Eminem singing? and rapping, "... I may be done with rap, I need a new outlet ..."? I need to read his article I think ... Jeremy Clarkson did an episode on Detroit some years ago (part 2). The History of Detroit and Detroit architecture articles surprisingly don't seem to mention much about the dereliction. There was an uncensored version available but the images were fuzzy so I posted the censored one, since the main point was the images, not the music. There's more info on the American situation at white flight and urban decay. Detroit still has an active centre, and then there is a ring that is empty or nearly so, and then there are suburbs, where people live. I learned about that in geography A level, cannot for the life of me remember what the phenomenon was called though - seems my memory is shot after all! The new name is Zone of transition, but it may have been "ring of urban decay" (or similar) in my learning days. The town I grew up in is part of Greater Manchester, one of the larger conurbations of England. We had some pretty bad areas as well, believe me. Most were brownfield sites and wonderful places to play and explore when you are a child. The vast majority are gone now after being developed into shopping areas with massive stores, similar to American ones I saw in NY (though the British ones seem much larger and less frequent), or vast industrial parks.

Image of Judge Hiram Bond

The image of my great grandfather Image:S3728976.jpg is from a newspaper article from 1902. Hiram died of a coronary in 1906. This would put it in public domain. Yale Beinecke Library alo only claims physical custody and that the ownership still belongs to Marshall Bond my grandfather's descendants. RichardBond (talk) 14:24, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

The picture was deleted because there was no source or licensing information provided. If the photo was published in a newspaper prior to 1923, it is in public domain according to United States copyright laws. CatScan

I got an odd result from running CatScan, as suggested on the Drive page; I entered 

Wikipedia articles needing copy edit
heraldry

and got a single result, Law of Arms. But instead of a CE tag, there’s one for unclear citation style. (There’s no explanation on the talk page AFAICT.)

Does the first category above cover a variety of sins, so to speak? Are all such articles counted in the drive’s goal and progress stats? Even assuming I knew how to fix the citations, I can’t see the article’s word-count going toward my totals, but if it’s within our scope it would be worth knocking off the list.

Its probably due to the category. That article has "Category:Articles containing possible transcription errors" and the GOCE table shows that category as a parameter in "undated articles". If the iteration level was set too high it might pick it up from there. We also had a problem with some templates adding stats to copy-editing but that does not seem to be the case here, though I will take a quick-ish look. Chaosdruid (talk) 07:25, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
Silly me, there it is. At the bottom of Category:Articles containing possible transcription errors it has been added to Category:Wikipedia articles needing copy edit. It appears that many of the articles in that category are not tagged with a copyedit banner either as the transcription errors category is a hidden one.
It comes from the [sic?] template, in this case, "and his succesors{{sic|?}} in the same are ... " Chaosdruid (talk) 07:39, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
Hmmm... still some problems. For example Kamalnagar has a userbox ({{Settlements in Bidar district}}) that had a sic? template next to one red link village. I removed that and the hidden category has now disappeared from the Kamalnagar page (and from around 30-40 others probably, in fact every article on that template had the category). There were 148 pages on the list as of now, I will see how many I can eliminate.
I will take a look at the rest and see what, if anything, should be done to sort it out. A couple of the pages I looked at are C or B class. Chaosdruid (talk) 08:12, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Bundy Image Issues

Hey, Diannaa! I must say that I'm losing confidence that the FA is going to happen if over 90% (or more) of the images in the article are going to be challenged and removed. I figured we'd have potential problems with the Utah mug shot, Caryn Campbell and "fit of rage" images, but if all the images from the Florida Memory Project are going to be challenged: I'd just as soon withdraw my nomination for FAC. It passed GAN with these images, and I've had vicious battles in the past with "image deletionists". I've brought up copyright issues before and was told that the WMF was better insulated against copyright lawsuits than most companies. I'd rather have this the best-written GA around than an FA stripped of all imagery. I'm sure I could gain consensus to keep it at GA rather than succumb to image-gutting at FAC. If the image issue cannot be sorted out in a reasonable manner, I feel very strongly that I will have to raise the issue of withdrawing the nomination on the talk page. We live in a visual world, and if FU rationale is going to get twisted even when every precaution has been taken to satisfy the "requirements" so that there are no images left on this article: screw that. I am OK with removing the photos of the victims; the pic of Campbell is clearly a yearbook photo that subseqently appeared in a newspaper (note the pixellated effect typical of newspaper pics of that era) and is thus not likely ok. I would like to keep as many pics as possible, obviously. There are several taken by Vidor that they will not be able to remove, and they think that File:Ted Bundy mug shot.jpg will be allowed. Photos taken in the hallway at the jail are very likely taken by govt of Florida employees, as the press would not have access. Many of the pics we are using are included in Rule and Nelson, which I will pick up on Monday when I go to work; there will be proper photo credits, and any that were taken by govt employees in the course of their duties should be OK to keep; see {{PD-FLGov}}. I need a new battery and my car appointment is not until Tuesday. It is a 30-min walk to the library so I will not be making a special trip there to pick up the books. --Diannaa (talk) 16:11, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Maybe I can save you a few minutes. In Rule 1989, File:Ted_Bundy_headshot.jpg is credited in an uncropped version as from Wide World Photos. "Uncropped" meaning you can see his right hand raised. Interestingly, UPI used the cropped image currently in the infobox on one of their recent articles[3], and there is no "UPI/(Insert name)" photo credit like there is for 99% of their images on that site (look around - these credits are under just about every picture). Corbis lays claim to the same image[4]. UPI is not to my knowledge owned by Bill Gates (yet ;P)[5] yet both agencies lay claim to the same image and want to charge for it. The benevolent state of Florida comes along and says, "You know what, you greedy bastards, this photo was taken in our state and is part of our state history." Whether the copyrights have truly expired or not is between UPI, Corbis and the state of Florida. And then WP:Commons. Jus' sayin'. Doc talk 03:40, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
The one with the horrid eyes that we currently have in the info box was likely taken on the same day and by the same photographer as the one where he is leaning on the wall (File:TedBundyprisonFlorida.jpg - the clothes and hair match). The caption we have for the one leaning against the wall states that it was taken during a press conference; where that piece of info came from, I don't know. We do know for sure that the "toolkit" photo was taken by a govt employee who photographed it as evidence. If we refuse to remove the photos, citing the State of Florida's claim of ownership, the article might still pass FA. Or not. Unfortunately the Commons is the Rodney Dangerfield wiki, they don't get no respect, so even though one of their admins has given the pics an official okey-dokey, they are still being questioned. I want to clear up a couple of other points using these sources as well: we need a date for Boone's divorce and confirmation that her whereabouts is unknown, as the cite from Rule's website has gone 404 on us; we need something from Nelson that states exactly which crimes he was executed for; and we need to confirm that both Bundy and Kloepfer owned VW Beetles. --Diannaa (talk) 03:56, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
The "horrid eyes" image will have to stay if any Florida pictures stay: it's one of the most iconic of him there is. The grumblings seem to indicate that the images need to stay unless they are proven beyond a reasonable doubt that they cannot. I'll look into the other cites, but on quick glance I see that the last quote came originally from Rule 1989, p.156: "A lug wrench, taped halfway up, under the seat of my car. He said it was for my protection. Plaster of paris in his room. Crutches. He had an Oriental knife in a kind of wooden case that he kept in the glove compartment of my car. Sometimes it was there; sometimes it was gone. He had a meat cleaver. I saw him pack it when he moved to Utah." No mention that I can find that her car was actually a VW: this will certainly have to be clarified. For Ted to always have used a VW might have been too obvious even for him. Michaud and Aynesworth (1999) mentions he owned a 1958 VW and later a 1968 VW. Vidor has already responded to that question, so we can put that query to an end. Excellent! One question: you mentioned that we weren't allowed to "tick off things or interweave our replies" on the FAC page, but every other FA nomination has these. Are you sure that others looking at it know that all the concerns have been addressed? Maybe we should prominently link your sandbox page, or something to let others know that the changes were made. Oh, just one more thing. In regards to this: I personally would at least remove the "advanced state of decomposition" thing from the lede. The article mentions that he would "...lie with his victims and have sex with their decomposing bodies until putrefaction forced him to stop." Putrefaction occurs earlier than the further decomposition and eventual skeletonization of human remains, and this could certainly be implied from "advanced decomposition" as it is now. I have gotten started. One reason why you are getting an incorrect result is because if you use the field "work", the template automatically places the name of the work in italics. So if you code for italics, it actually removes the necessary italics. --Diannaa (talk) 18:59, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Newsletter

Hi

Is there something wrong with the thumbnail on the newsletter? It seems to show a large gap between the bottom axis and the last point on the yellow line but, once clicked on, the image file shows hardly any gap - is it perhaps showing an older version in the thumbnail?

I am getting a different result. The first graph is present and the second one is totally missing. It looks like the Commons is having issues with displaying thumbnails again. I Am Yours

I ran onto a tube-station platform in north-east London with a minute to spare, but could not work out which way along the line the train was going. I asked a shortish bloke in some weird all black outfit, which included a long black coat that had just become fashionable and a low wide-brimmed hat, whether or not the next train was going to the station I wanted. He replied that it was and turned round towards me to finish off his sentence. When he turned to face me I noticed, more than anything else, his hammer and sickle ear-rings. He said it was the one I wanted and as it was pulling in to the platform he turned back away from me. He seemed familiar. Lo and behold some ten months later there was a documentary on TV and there was Clapton with the hammer and sickle ear-rings! Where I was staying had a Rolls-Royce on the next street with the number plate "EC 1", it all made sense!
I never did bump into him again, but what do you say to a man that has influenced your love of guitar and is one of the reasons I play it.

Lol :¬) I similarly have encountered other less-famous people that I did not recognise until after the event, or did-not-know-what-to-say-so-said-nothing incidents, including Joan Armatrading, Jeremy Clarkson and Will Mellor. My most regrettable was while standing in the queue during the Newark airport delay in Jan 2010. I commented to my brother on the lovely rear of a lady dressed in tight leggings in front of me, thinking I was ok as she had earpieces in - she pulled one out and turned round and smiled - it was Annabella Sciorra that I had much admired after watching her in L&O:CI (I only found out later from Wiki that she had been in The Sopranos) - turned out it was me that was "the ass"! Copyedit drive rollover question

Hi Diannaa, I have a question about rollover words for the July copyedit drive. In May I copy-edited Dugong* from the Requests page, which contained 4915 words at the time I started. However, I didn't record or mention this in the May drive. IP sock puppets

Hi. Do you remember my last post to you about Markelmitchell and his MOS vandalism? Well, his vandalism has come back in the form of numerous IP addresses that share the same edits to WP:Albums articles. Most of them edit the same article Markelmitchell got blocked for, 51/50 Ratchet (basically every IP you see at the article's history since his edits). I've been reverting their edits to that and other articles for the past couple of months, but fear that I will end up getting into an edit war/3RR. I don't think I can report them since they become inactive after 2 or 3 reverts to their edits, coming back under a different IP address. So what can I do about this? The reason they have a new IP address every time is because they are using a dial-up service, and every time they connect to the internet they are assigned a different IP. The way to handle this is a range block. It looks like our user is the only person editing lately from this IP range, so I am going to lay a range block down, for a week. For future reference, the range is 4.227.56.0/21. We can re-block later if the activity resumes. Thank you for reporting this. --Diannaa (talk) 17:46, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

So Now What?

It's been "archived". Yay. We satisfied most of the reviewer's requests, and the only thing even really close to an "Oppose" aside from the image issues (which is a Commons issue first and foremost) recommended that the article be "A" class. ! Not many malls have rollercoasters I bet, my friend had a poster of that mall but she did no tell me about the rc. Alberta and Saskatchewan are two places I really need to visit as West Canada is in my top ten areas to visit, though Canada would probably account for 4 or 5 of my top 20. My brother didn't have enough spare time when I was in NY state visiting him. Yellowknife (along with the Great Slave(y) Lake), Edmonton, Banff and Calgary were on my list of places to see for many years. There used to be a scheme many years ago where one could go over, clear an acre and after a year of not dying they would give you another one etc. My friend and I were well up for it but he chickened out and I lost faith and started college. Wish I had done it now...I do have the next best thing though (sort of) - Hiccups and Corner Gas, though I only watched the first 4 out of season one of CG so far - they do make me laugh, they even have sarcasm, something American comedies don't really have as any that do seem to get pulled after 4 or 5 episodes :¬)

I have seasons one through four of Corner Gas on DVD. I like the fact that there is no laugh track. It is a show about nothing, like Seinfeld, but set in Saskatchewan rather than NYC. Did you know Saskatchewan is Canada's most perfectly-shaped province? Because it is a rectangle. I learned this from Season 3, Episode 12.

Those are articles from the Requests page and it says at the top of the July drive page that we should leave that for you guys to calculate? In my opinion two sections "role & responsibility" and "hierarchy" are not yet copy-edited. Requests page backlog

I have come up with a way to reduce the backlog on the Guild's Requests page. Each of the Guild's coordinators will copy edit one article per day for however long it takes to completely reduce the backlog. We should start with the oldest requests first, then work our way to the more recent requests. As it has happened before, there are probably several users who requested a copy edit of an article in July that are dissatisfied because their request hasn't been taken care of yet. Also, to prevent this from ever happening again, I think at least one of our coordinators and several volunteers should keep a constant eye on the Requests page in between Backlog elimination drives. Sorry, I somehow missed this post. The wait is presently only two to three weeks max, so it's not horrible. Some huger articles cannot be completed in one day. We need to offer a bonus for Requests page work during all our drives. I work on the requests page something chronic and it never does seem to go down, so yeah. Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you for participating! Here is your end-of-drive report.

Participation

50 people signed up for the drive, of which 39 participated. Thanks to all who copy edited articles and helped us reduce the backlogs in both the total articles and requests. We offered a bonus for copy edits from the Requests page, and have been somewhat successful in reducing that backlog, as a record 89 new requests were received in the month of July.

Progress report

During the month of July we reduced the backlog by 338 articles, or by about 8.5%. We did not reach our goal of a 10% reduction, but we came close, and did very well considering the small size of the group participating. Since our Backlog elimination drives began in May 2010, we have reduced the backlog by 4,708 articles. End-of-drive results can be found here. We will be handing out barnstars within the next week or two.

Requests page

Please remember that the GOCE Requests page is receiving a high number of requests, with the number of August requests already above three per day. Any assistance to help keep the backlog down would be greatly appreciated.

I am noticing that we did not do too well on checks towards the end of the drive. I thought it strange that after yours and my discussion about the total words on the 30th, there should be someone between us on the 31st, especially as they were not even on the leaderboard on the 30th!?! [7]
I went and looked at Wikid77: [8] claimed 1730 should be 0 (changed the tag only); [9] claimed 6061 should have been 1120 (partial edit); and [10] claimed 5931, should have been 952 (partial edit). That was from quick totals checks on the highest out of the last five or so and, if I am right, a total of 11,650 over-claimed on just those articles. It may even mean that, if more were checked, there would have been changes on the leaderboard; you would possibly have been 2nd in total words for a start.
I found it strange that the total of 82 articles was missed, especially as I was checking the lists for editors getting more than 10 total articles right up until the last week, though the last two days I was doing that little project on recent additions. They had 24 completed on the 30th, and suddenly 82 by the 31st? There is something strange going on there, as they were updating the GAN totals up to three times a day during the last 3 or 4 days of the drive, whilst not updating their own totals. I would suggest going through them, but it seems a little "after the horse has bolted". They should at least be told to update on a regular basis, as we need to check 10%, or to suffer some sort of penalty.
I realise that there is a need to not discourage editors, but surely there is a need to discourage them from such practices as claiming full word counts for partial copyedits and claiming 1,730 for removing one tag.

He did not appear on the leader board until the end because I added him in. A few of the articles that were copy edited did not have a copy edit tag. He did not have word counts on all of the articles, so I asked him what the deal was. Did he want to get credit for these articles, and if so, I would retrieve the information for him. We typically have a problem with this slippage in auditing people towards the end of the drive. Point well taken. Something to be more careful of in the future. Definitely this particular editor will have to be more closely monitored next drive if they participate. Sorry about that, I had some real life stuff that was consuming much of my energy and did not do as much as I should have. I need a clone --Dianna (talk) 15:23, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
I investigated a bit more, and he joined the drive on the 15th, and posted 3 articles on that day. He updated again on the 23rd, when he had 24 articles done. Then updated to 60 on the 30th, and updated twice on the 31st, to 74 and finally 83 articles. There was one duplicate listing so the end total was 82. It appears he was making his list elsewhere and adding to the GOCE page in large batches. I do this too, but add them to the GOCE page every day or two. Do you want to put a message about keeping better records on their page right now? Or should we wait and see what happens next drive? --Dianna (talk) 15:36, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
I think this is two-fold, though single solution. The issue of not keeping records led to us not catching the bigger problem of incorrect totals (though not made by themselves).
I did note that at 24 articles there were no totals anyway, as they instead had (?) and (huge), which would indicate an inability to calculate, rather than anything else. I would prefer that we begin dialogue with them and inform them of the scripts for "Page size" and "DYK count" and help them if they are unable to install them.
The issue of totals would also be affected by that and your reply, and so I would not wish any punishment on them (except maybe a jolly good trouting to someone? me, you, them, all of us? lol a mass trouting) as it was not their sole responsibility that the totals were calculated in that way (and I should have caught the (?) thingy). I feel this should definitely be mentioned to them also, as it has caused a large discrepancy in the numbers, and put you at risk for having to do their work for them. Once we are sure they understand how to install and perform page sizing, they would then have sole responsibility for any totals produced during future drives.
PS - No, I would never underhandedly try and discover where you were on your Ninja outings! (pushes tracking device under monitor so Diannaa does not see it)
PPS - I must admit that a Chilli Dog with Cheese is something I need to try now. (Strange, but for some reason I keep wanting to put Chilli rather than Chili, perhaps an ENGVAR issue?) Chaosdruid (talk) 17:36, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
Yah, sorry, it looks like the overages are my fault as I did not realise that some were only tag removals and some were partial copy edits. I could have caught this if I had taken more time to evaluate his work a bit better; my bad. Do we trout vegetarians? With tofu? I get pretty wrapped up in trying to keep the article count going down, so much that I don't even bother to keep my stats any more or draw articles from the requests page. Maybe I got to stop taking it quite so seriously, eh? That would leave more time for the audits and educating new copy editors. I will put something on their talk page, as presumably they will be back next drive. What's this DYK script of which you speak? I am not familiar with that one.

I will be gone from August 20 to 30 to a secret location in Europe. Actually it is my travelling companion who is the famous one (no, it is not Justin Bieber), I am merely well-known in a Canadian sort of way, ha ha. I will remind everyone closer to the date.

A Question

Hey, Diannaa! Knowing that you're in the Guild of copyeditors, I'm quite sure you've dealt with copyvio issues many times. Here's my issue: I've found a GA article (Dennis Rodman) that in one small section alone I've corrected 3 separate cut-and-paste blatant copyvios (with the sources conveniently provided for incontrovertible evidence). I've brought up the issue on the talk page, but no one's biting so far. Before I look into who actually added the copyvios: is there some kind of "copyvio" bot that can check this entire article that you know of? I seem to remember seeing it happen somewhere before, but I can't remember what article or bot. What would you do in my shoes, where you've discovered multiple copyvios in just one section of a GA? I am gonna answer your question anyway for teh talk page watchers. I know there are some copyvio search bots, as they tag new articles for speedy deletion. I don't know how to check a particular article using a bot. Coren Search Bot is down right now. There is a duplication detector available at Toolserver: http://toolserver.org/~dcoetzee/duplicationdetector/ but you need to know the suspected source of the copy vio. Often I take a chunk of text and plug it into Google to look for potential sources for large unwikified blocks of text that are dropped of a piece into an article. But the longer a chunk of text is in the article, the tougher it gets to locate the source, because the material will begin to appear in Wikipedia mirror sites. You can get expert advice on copy vio issues from User:Moonriddengirl and her team. The place to start is WP:COPYVIO. --Dianna (talk) 02:05, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

It is specific to the requests page, links to GOCE req, text altered to be more specific to requests:
"A member of the Guild of Copy Editors reviewed a version of this article for copy editing after a request on the GOCE requests page. However, a major copy edit was inappropriate at that time due to issues found in the article which have been mentioned on the requester's or article's talk page. Once these issues have been addressed, please add the article once again on the GOCE requests page. The Guild welcomes all editors with a good grasp of English to visit our project page and consider joining!"
There would also be a field for the link to the discussion. I realise it would not be often used, but if things pick up at the rate they are doing, I suspect there may be a use for it. For example the one I raised earlier today, the MIT one you were looking at that I had a quick look at yesterday, and the one Demiurge and Aichikawa are looking at (banned user, plagiarism/copyvio) - all three could have been templated with the GOCEreviewed template, except that it talked about tags on the page and putting the {{Copy edit|for=|date=August 2011}} tl back on.
I would like us all to perform (like I think you have been doing with dashes) some initial checks on a request once it has been posted. If we semi-automate parts of the process with subst templates, which is a possibilty in the future, there will be a need for automatic templating. For example marking those that are already part of a GAN or FAC as more urgent, ones that do not need copyediting, ones that have other issues such as copyvio that prevent an immediate copy-edit etc.

To be honest I have similar concerns regarding GOCE™ quality assurance, though I think that sort of discussion should really take place on the co-ordinators page. Having a discussion like the one on our main talk page is great, it gets it out to all members that their work is crap and they are useless lol. (that is called sarcasm if there are any tps' that are from non-commonwealth countries - ooh I suppose that was as well lol)

Splitting the Guild

A proposal to split the Guild has been brought up here. If this proposal were to go through, one part of the Guild would contain members who work on the copyedit backlog, and the other part would contain members who work on higher quality articles (GA, FA) as well as the copyedit backlog. Hi Diana :) I wanted to ask you a small favor (don't worry, no advanced c/e :P). SO this article is almost at the top of the list (I don't mind waiting for it to reach the top), but can I ask that the most experienced member of the GOCE be reserved for that article? I am patient. Its been waiting for 2 weeks, I don't mind another two. But this article needs the best job the GOCE editors can give, because I am looking for an FA. Its already gone through extensive work and PR, and is in very good shape, so I need someone experienced. So I hope that's not too much to ask, but do you know pretty much who is "the most experienced" member? Is it you? Catch up

Hi

I am on catch-up after spending far too long on this copyedit and its notes and RL stuff.

I also have edits to complete after a GA review, my first nomination for a GA! Hopefully I can get everything up-to-date by tomorrow as well as look through all the GOCE news on the FA and GA ce comments. I already see a need to add something about the fact that there is no shiny reward for an FA or GA copyedit, only that one might get one for doing an article over 5k words. Is there anything I have missed over the last two days? My watchlist is too big, at over 4,500 articles, and I only get the last 12 hours or so - I can change my prefs to only show the most recent change, but that only gets me to 36 hours, anything before that is lost.

Hope you are well though, and looking forwards to the next drive lol I also noticed that you seem to be getting the credit for the "review by co-ordinators" idea, if it goes wrong that will be another bullet I avoided lol :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 03:53, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

I started collecting my stuff for my trip to Europe today. I got a new suitcase as my return flight goes through Chicago (pray for me) so I am going to try to fit everything in a carry-on. I will be bringing my laptop and keeping up with events as best I can. It will be like my last two trips, though, where even when I am available I will not feel like doing anything too intense or complex, especially during the last four days of the trip, when the Really Big Event will be happening.

The main thing you have missed is the ongoing discussion, which I think you have already caught up on. I did another round of edits on Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death), which you have worked on in the past, but it still won't pass FA due to issues unrelated to copy editing. My watch-list is 283 articles, and over half of that is user pages (many of which are inactive and being monitored merely for vandalism), GOCE pages, and the like. I recently dropped a lot of watchlist in a spate of WP:DGAF.

I know a few words of German from studying WWII. But probably they are the wrong kind of words! I have a little book of phrases and a friend who speaks German who will be there. Thanks for the e-mail. Yah, I noticed that I do a lot of the work for the Guild, but when it comes time to make the big decisions or talk to other users, I am not so good at that aspect. Also regarding the requests page, I had updated it with some coordinators instructions, but now I am not so sure consensus has been reached on whether or not we are going to do reviews. So the page will have to be brought in line with whatever the final outcome of the discussion is. We will need a drive invitation prepared and sent out; not too many people have signed up yet. Utah is good at writing these newsletters. SMasters knows how to send it out with AWB. I have arranged for an announcement in the Signpost. We could put a post on the Reward Board. Yup, req. page and discussion monitoring and awaiting outcomes. I have sort of suggested that if no other proposal can find consensus we could consider a GOCE FA/GA taskforce. I would prefer to keep it in-house, as any new project would probably result in a de facto abandoning ship by the better copy-editors apart from on drives. Oh damn, I forgot to suggest removing the bonuses for request page edits from the drive, in an effort to remove any claims of "shiny awards" for the requests page copyedits.
Luggage, lol. My brother flew from Newark to Stockholm when we had a family get together a couple of years ago. I arrived two days after he did, and carried my bag out to where they all met me. Imagine my surprise when we discovered that I had his bag, it was 95% identical to mine and even had the same plastic tag on it from his business. It turned out his had been lost between Newark and Amsterdam, where they changed flights, and the airline had decided to put it onto my connecting flight from Amsterdam to get it to him. I had to go back through customs to pick mine up which they had put into holding for him to pick up! Gotta love airports :¬)
Anyway, have a good time and try to sample as many Bräus and wursts as possible! (hmmm.. not sure how that will work with the veggie thing lol, best I strike that one then lmao) My other brother spends a lot of time in that country, as he specialises in certain operas, though I never manage to get over to visit him while he is there.
PS I found a wonderful picture that sort of sums up how many UK people see the German diet, as well as the non-pc UK populous' "sausage eating krauts", as opposed the French "cheese eating surrender monkeys", our other main xenophobic target. Warning! Vegans and vegetarians may wish to skip this picture! I was hoping to try some good cheese. In France I ate a lot of cheese and bread, as they roll up the sidewalks at around 1-2 PM and there is no food available anywhere until the shops and restaurants re-open around 6 PM. We were constantly on the verge of getting thrown out of our hotel, but why was never quite made clear. We are Canadian, ffs, not a bunch of rowdies. I was afraid to complain that the roof leaked for fear it would somehow be construed as being our fault. I had a snotty waiter mock me in Lyon for wanting coffee at 5 PM. They have a gorgeous park there, 290 acres, but there are no bathrooms. There were two outhouses in the entire park, one for each sex; a hole in the floor, no toilet, no lights. I had to illuminate my cell phone to orient myself. Excuse me, which of us is uncivilised, the one who wants a cup of joe at 5 pm or the one whose country contains those horrific shittoirs? You be the judge.

ChaosDruid, as a copyeditor, you need to read up on famous speeches. "Never have so many owed so much to so few..." ... ever heard of it? Well it was spoofed within months, as "never have so many surrendered so much to so few", in reference to hundreds of thousands of Italians surrendering to tens of thousands of British and Empire forces in the Western Desert. It looks like most of us are leaning toward creating a writers workshop, so I'm pretty sure we're near the end of that discussion unless something else comes up. I don't see that - I see support for the checks from 4 or 5 and a couple, mainly Truthkeeper, saying checks might scare people away. He isn't new though, and how does someone know if their work is checked if it is ok? There would be nothing said, so how could they be offended? Malleus Fatuorum brought up the workshop idea earlier, and SMasters brought it up at the end of the section. And I think the workshop idea is a good one. So maybe not everyone is leaning toward that idea, but there are three users. As for the reviews, the difference between reviewing requests and drive copy edits is that we only review 10% of the copy edits in the Backlog elimination drives, and with this new idea, we'll review 100% of the copy edits in the Requests page. And as I said, we must consider the opinion of those outside of the Guild as well as those inside the Guild. That's collaboration, which is what Wikipedia is all about. Regarding people taking Requests page copy edit reviews to offense, I quote myself from the Guild's talk page: "Checking work will probably make some editors feel like they don't have good copy editing skills, and it will cause them to quit working for the Guild....As I said in one of my earlier comments, I understand that the intent of this review proposal is good, but it only takes one misunderstanding to cause another serious problem for the Guild." Here Truthkeeper implies that we need to be held accountable for what out editors are doing, but I don't see how that's possible unless we check their work. STALKER HERE Actually, I thought I was the one who first suggested a separate Guild of Writers in this edit. Anyway, I still see copy editing and writing as different skill sets. I do not expect many of our members joining a Writers' Guild. I would think that their members would come from those who work mostly on FA or GA articles, and not from the GOCE. Having a sub-section or a taskforce will only reinforce the confusion between copy editing and pure writing, and we will be blamed for any lack of quality in this area. Hence, my suggestion that it be a completely separate entity. Just my 2 cents. BTW, despite what it says on my user page, I do actually watch a handful of other users' talk pages (like all of the GOCE coordinators). :) – SMasters (talk) 04:29, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
When I first suggested it, I was perhaps not clear "what we need to do now to stop these bad FA and GA copy-edits ..." followed by "... I would like to suggest that only co-ordinators remove listings from the requests page" seemed a little contradictory.
I did try and fix that in a later post "At present we still need to check FA/GA articles and editors work on them. This could be dropped after a time, ..." and then in another post "to checks on those at GA/FA."
In the proposals section I put "Mandatory checks should only be on FA and GA candidates copy-edits by new members and less-experienced editors." and "perhaps asking that anyone wanting to take on FA and GA reviews goes through an initial mentoring process?"
Having said that, we do get requests for articles that say things like "eventually for GA" or "I plan to put this up for GAN" Chaosdruid (talk) 14:01, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

September drive requests

Perhaps, for the September drive or maybe for other drives, we should think about a special barnstar that is tied directly to our goals for the drive? Yes, we already add a 50% bonus for requests page articles, but perhaps we should add another way to entice people to copyedit those articles. In the May drive we had a column in our leaderboard for 2009 articles- perhaps we could try the same with requests page articles (or just a barnstar for most articles copyedited from the requests page), to speed up the copyediting of them? Doing the same for 2010 articles would be more reasonable for when we're closer to wiping those off of the backlog, which I don't think will be soon. (Edited to add: I just read the above discussion that included removing shiny awards and the 50% bonus from the requests page. I personally do not agree with this action, as I feel that they can be and are helpful in keeping down backlogs at the requests page, which ultimately are more urgent than anything in the regular backlog.)--Slon02 (talk) 15:21, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

It is unlikely we will be able to review everything anyways; we would start with FA and move to GA and do the rest if time permits. Time consuming not just to review but to also give needed feedback and education when things need improving.
