Thanks for the notification @Tikuko:, but it isn't really my article. It was written by TheSarcoplasmic (talk · contribs) and was ridiculously declined as not notable. I only came across it when I was going through speedy deletion requests whcih I then declined and resubmitted. It's a real shame that the original author hasn't been back to Wikipedia since this was declined, as I suspect we've lost a contributor due to a stupid decline (not yours!). Belarusian American

Dear Mr Ged UK,

Thank you for protecting the Belarusian American article. I was wondering though why did you protect it on the version which didn't achieve consensus? Is it possible to revert it? As you can see from the history, Mankiw2 is a troll who never actually explains his reverts and ignores requests to turn to the talk page. Whenever an admin protects an article, it's the wrong version. It's inevitable that someone will think it's the wrong one. Start the discussion on the talk page and build the consensus again. If he doesn't get involved, then we can take action against him in the future if he continues. GedUK  12:18, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
That's the point, I did start a discussion and as you can see the guy who does the reverts refuses to take part in it. If you study the case, you will see you did protect the wrong version because it's the one which is promoted by Mankiw2, who does it just for the sake of trolling (he never writes an edit summery and never wrote on the talk page). If someone wants to make a change in the page, they are the one who need to go to the talk page and promote it, therefore the version which should appear now should be the one which is the old consensus version which was there for ages. 90.206.176.99 (talk) 12:55, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
I can see a 2 person discussion, one is you, the other isn't Mankiw2, which cannot be said to be a consensus. Is there another discussion somewhere else that covers this that I haven't seen? GedUK  13:36, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
In the archive I found a discussion, not a big one, where one person said what he did and others supported him. The other one is probably the sock-master of Mankiw2, they don't have the same IP, but they revert me on the same pages, and in the same pattern. (happened to wander by; have no involvement) Some suggestions: 1) Be civil. Criticize the behavior, not the person. Don't call someone a troll. At most, identify trollish behavior, but even that's not often helpful. Don't throw around sock accusations unless you have evidence, in which case filing a case is appropriate. 2)If there's consensus (you didn't provide a link), after the protection expires, make an edit that reflects that discussion, and link to it in your edit summary. If there isn't one, hopefully the protection- forced break will mean that you and Mankiw2 (talk · contribs) can reach consensus by focusing on content instead of dropping insults. There's no deadline. (Advice from someone who at times needed to hear much the same thing.)
PS. In English, one must be a US citizen to be an American. That's what the word does mean, and whether it should mean something else, is not relevant. Therefore neither person (no one) should be included without a reliable source (which for this information would include a primary source such as a person's web site) indicating they are US citizens. --Elvey (talk) 19:05, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
  • You will notice that an IP address user is POV trashing Belarusian American and Russian American articles while artfully twisting the situation to make one believe he is the innocent party. It is also true that this IP editor edits under different IP addresses, which he says happens automatically and not under his control. I understand this can happen with certain ISPs. So the only way to stop this POV editor (who chooses to ignore article-documented facts) is to have very long term IP editing blocks on these two articles so the IP editor will get bored and go away. I notice you have done nothing about the IP editor who has been trying to insert non-American images into the articles while the editor you blocked has been trying to keep fooian Americans there; the IP editor is now on a revenge mission against the editor you blocked--removing fooian American images who were originally in the articles, as well as going after other edits of the blocked IP editor. Ged UK, when the IP I replied to above asked on my talk page for input, I, in a longer comment, endorsed your partial protection diff, noted why Manikw2 does NOT appear to be a serious editor, and noted that I think the recent action of semi-protection was probably for the best and may be needed long term; if I'm not mistaken, semi-protection will block both new accounts such as Manikw2, and IPs. --Elvey (talk) 22:33, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
You are being 'played' by the IP editor (using all kinds of IP addresses, but same editor) who started all this mess by insisting on inserting non-American images into these articles and removing American images. Manikw2 and I kept removing them as non-American. Manikw2 does not talk or explain, but the true culprit here is the IP editor and nothing is being done about it. Protection of Edge of the Earth‎

I'm confused why you made the protection to Edge of the Earth‎ indefinite. You say "vandalism, AfD was to redirect, IP editor doesn't agree, so protecting" I'm guessing the IP is gone by now (3 years later) and the activity on the page seems slow enough that vandalism shouldn't be an issue. Looking back at the time, looks like an IP didn't accept the deletion/redirect of the article at AfD. Time's changed now and the article exists again an seems to be notable. I've removed the prtoection, it's unneeded now. Thanks for bringing it up. GedUK  12:42, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

There had been issues, hence the protection. Since protection ended, there hasn't been any issues. It is on my watchlist, and if I see something that warrants protection, I'll put it back on. GedUK  12:45, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

breaking links

When moving an article like Tadaksahak, would you please leave a rd so you don't break all the incoming links? If I hadn't caught it, all the incoming rd's would've been deleted, and all the article links would've turned red. — kwami (talk) 18:26, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

As you know, you can add the collapsed=yes parameter if you desire the archive box to be collapsed upon page load. I did not make it that way here because your current use of six archive boxes takes up more space collapsed than this does expanded. This archive box also includes a notification about automatic archiving.

Also, you currently have a configuration for the archive indexer bot which has to be updated manually. The following, placed at the top of your talk page, will produce the same effect:

You can, of course, edit the above such that it will work from User:Ged UK/talkpageinfo.

In addition, if you want the threads in your November 2007 - August 2008 page placed in appropriate archive files by their dates – just like all your other archives – you can move the threads from that page onto your main talk page. User:lowercase sigmabot III will then move them into appropriate pages based on the dates in the threads the next time the bot runs on your talk page. While old, they would only be on your talk page for a short time. You would, of course, then need to add a 2007 line to the above archive box.

It doesn't look like it. Let the protection lapse and see what happens, but it looks like PC is working quite well, and there hasn't been that much vandalism. There's plenty of good faith IP edits, so I'd like to see how it works unprotected this time. We can always put it back on again after. GedUK  12:19, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

To add templates, go to the "Insert" menu and choose the "Transclusion" (puzzle piece) item. Enter the name of the template and click "Add template". If TemplateData exists for the template, then a list of possible parameters will appear. If not, you can add parameters yourself by typing the parameter name under "Add parameter". For unnamed parameters, use numbers ("1" for the first unnamed parameter).

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has worked mostly minor features and fixing bugs. A few significant bugs include working around a bug in CSSJanus that was wrongly flipping images used in some templates in right-to-left (RTL) environments (bug 50910) a major bug that meant inserting any template or other transclusion failed (bug 59002), a major but quickly resolved problem due to an unannounced change in MediaWiki core, which caused VisualEditor to crash on trying to save (bug 59867). This last bugs did not appear on any Wikipedia. Additionally, significant work has been done in the background to make VisualEditor work as an independent editing system.

As of today, VisualEditor is now available as an opt-out feature to all users at 149 active Wikipedias.

  • The character inserter tool in the "Insert" menu has a very basic set of characters. The character inserter is especially important for languages that use Latin and Cyrillic alphabets with unusual characters or frequent diacritics. Your feedback on the character inserter is requested. In addition to feedback from any interested editor, the developers would particularly like to hear from anyone who speaks any of the 50+ languages listed under Phase 5 at mw:VisualEditor/Rollouts, including Breton, Mongolian, Icelandic, Welsh, Afrikaans, Macedonian, and Azerbaijani.
  • meta:Office hours on IRC have been heavily attended recently. The next one will be held this coming Wednesday, 22 January at 23:00 UTC.
  • You can now edit some of the page settings in the "options" dialog – __NOTOC__ and __FORCETOC__ as selection (forced on, forced off, or default setting; bugs 56866 and 56867) and __NOEDITSECTION__ as a checkbox (bug 57166).
  • The automated browser tests were adjusted to speed them up and bind more correctly to list items in lists, and updated to a newer version of their ruby dependencies. You can monitor the automated browser tests' results (triggered every twelve hours) live on the server.
  • Wikipedia:VisualEditor/User guide was updated recently to show some new and upcoming features.

Looking ahead: The character formatting menu on the toolbar will get a drop-down indicator next Thursday. The reference and media items will be the first two listed in the Insert menu. The help menu will get a page listing the keyboard shortcuts. Looking further out, image handling will be improved, including support for alignment (left, right, and center) and better control over image size (including default and upright sizes). The developers are also working on support for editing redirects and image galleries.

Something weird happened here

... with this and this edit. The first one was actually made by me, but we got an edit conflict. In my edit I had replaced the weak wisegeek ref by the two book refs. Very bizarre. Any idea how this can happen? - DVdm (talk) 12:57, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Um, no sorry, not so weird after all. That first edit edit of yours was different indeed. I should have looked closer. We just had a straightforward edit conflict. Unless I've missed something, PC2 still isn't agreed, and I don't see the need for it on this article. PC1 seems to be working quite well. It might be worth adding a hidden note adivsing users not to add sourced from the Mail. GedUK  12:07, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Are you saying to extend the duration of the protection, or the scope (ie PC2). Time extension is probably, scope expansion isn't. GedUK  12:17, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
