Sheila Copps

You've undone an edit I made to correct an error. The article on Sheila Copps claims that Copps Coliseum is named in HER honour. I think you will find that Copps Coliseum is named in honour of her father Victor K. Copps (see the entry for Copps Coliseum). I'm going to redo my original edit - please DON'T UNDO. If you feel the wording needs improving, feel free to change it but don't restore the erroneous info!

When there's an extremely promotional article submitted, that looks like it would have to be started over entirely, the simplest thing to do is just to nominate it for speedy deletion G11, preferably using Twinkle. The sooner we get these out of our system the better, and there's no need to go through the overhead of declining it in AfC. For example (& I'm not going to delete it for a day or two, so you can see it):

I don't remember marking it as reviewed... The page was probably autoreviewed on creation [1]. However, what's the benefit of unreviewing such pages? Zeitgeist Movement page

I changed my edits back. The article is more concise and accurate to what the movement truly is. Especially since the final edit I made was to a sentence fragment that made no sense. The edit in the first paragraph is due to the fact that if Peter Joseph started the movement intentionally he wouldn't have made the first film as conspiratorial as it was, due to perceived backlash. This should be obvious because he keeps having to reiterate constantly that the first film has nothing to do with the movement.Drabglum (talk) 12:05, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

I reverted you back to this talk page users edit and my previous edit also. That is what is called Original Research, your opinion about the motivations of Peter Joseph. Also you made up another meaning for Zeitgeist that does not relate to the translation of 'spirit of the times'. Again your opinions about the group which sound a lot like how the group tries to present itself, is not what is needed in the article. Also the premise of the Movement is well documented, how it started and the beginning etc. Joseph is the leader also more or less. Saying he did it unintentionally? sounds off the mark also and is not cited from any source but your opinion of him or the group, so please stop trying that edit or at the very least get a discussion going on the talk page about your opinions first. Do you think if he intentionally wanted to start a movement that could be taken seriously he would make the first film so conspiratorial? I'm going to allow the meaning of zeitgeist to change. But besides that the article is more accurate with the changes I made. Peter Joseph is not the leader he is the most vocal proponent. That is all. It would be fallacy to call him a leader when the movement is based on abolishing that kind of hierarchy. He doesn't lead anyone, go look at the TZMnetwork website yourself. He Isn't even on there. To be a leader he would have to actually be directing the activism, but he Isn't. The people who comprise the Zeitgeist Movement decide themselves what they are going to do activism wise. Floyd Cramer

You undid an edit I made to the Floyd Cramer entry, noting the release date of Cramer's album, Looking for Mr. Goodbar as "1968"; the album's release date is 1978, as noted on allmusic and several other sites, and confirmed by the album's contents, including a number of songs ("You Light Up My Life" etc.) that could not have been recorded in 1968.

HMS Solent You removed my addition of the railroad line to the article on the Shonkin Sag. I have revised the entry and cited references. You claim it does not appear "constructive" to you - please look at the photo in the article, which clearly shows the railroad grade. Railroads frequently take advantage of geologic features to minimize grading, etc. The Shonkin Sag is a prominent feature in North central MT, and this Milwaukee Road line opened this area for agriculture - I think that's pretty relevant. If I have made any technical errors, (I'm not a Wiki expert) I appreciate your help, but please do not remove my addition based on your subjective opinion of what is "constructive" unless you have an objective reason.

If you have issues adding a reference, try Wikicite - it is indeed handy for a proper addition of inline sources. The statistics were probably correct, provided that you have the sources to back them, but the claim about "The Fenian Gangster" is unsourced and dubious, at best. In addition, I had to revert to a prior revision as some IPs were making vandalising edits. Chick tract

Thank you for your notification. I wanted to ask you a question: Why is there allowed to be the criticisms of Jack Chick and his tracts on his "Chick tract" page, but nobody is allowed to put testimonies of people that like Chick tracts, and were positively affected by them? Why must we focus solely on the negative? Shouldn't it be two-sided? George W. Bush's page isn't all just about how he took the US into the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, why must the Chick tract page be just about the criticisms? The testimonies were written by the people that benefited from Chick's ministry. I don't see how the person affected is not a reliable source for their own testimony. Also, I did source them on the page. I think that this is a pretty good example of something that I said to another mod about how the "Chick tract" page is negatively biased toward Jack Chick. I sourced the testimonies. I didn't violate a copyright. I wasn't stealing. If what I did by siting testimonies is wrong (and sourcing them from the chick.com website), then everyone that sources anything on wikipedia.org is stealing and infringing on copyrights. This argument is so flawed that I don't even know what else to say. There is an obvious bent against Jack Chick and his tracts. The testimonies balance the page out, considering the fact that half the page is on criticisms of him and the tracts. The testimonies deserve/should be there just as much as the criticism and the pop-culture sections. If those can be there the testimonies should be there too. That comment quoted is the original. I have decided that my contribution is to remove "exceptionally low prices" and mild rephrasing. There is no evidence to prove that Warehouse sells it's products at lower prices than competitors, as hinted to by "exceptionally low prices."

Therefore, "The Warehouse has been criticised for poor products despite offering these products at exceptionally low prices. The Warehouse has had product recalls of items they exclusively sell."

becomes "The Warehouse has been criticised for poor products and has had product recalls of items they exclusively sell."

Shag (artist) picture change

You had changed back the image for the page on the artist, Shag. My reasoning behind changing it was because the current picture is seven years old, does not reflect the artist's current appearance, and it is, as a whole, a completely outdated picture. Sorry for arguing against your edit, I just feel that the new picture would better illustrate who the artist is.

Yes you did, and so did your predecessor. I wish you all would have a bit more faith in the system, and that you would consider that no major disaster is going to happen overnight if some edits are allowed to stand for longer than you'd like. There's WP:ANEW, WP:AIV (you could make the claim), and WP:RFPP. All of those are better options than edit warring. I've semi-protected the article so I won't have to block anyone--in part I can justify this because the IP editor is editing disruptively, against what appears to be consensus. But you have to realize that such actions complicate matters for us as well. Honestly, I should block all three of you.

So think about it. Make a case on one of the boards--it won't give an instant result like hitting rollback does, but you'll stay out of hot water, and you have a better chance of having a more permanent effect on the article. Establishing talk page consensus is step one toward arguing disruption, and that's where you should go right now, if only to confirm what your predecessor said--preferably with a (brief) argument. Hello hmssolent,

I understand that you undid the edit I made to the Dante's Inferno section. I would like to explain why I thought the term 'slothful' ought to appear under the fifth circle's description. The Inferno is supposed to be a discovery (and ultimate rejection) of various sins, and yet the cardinal sin of 'sloth' or 'acedia' is not mentioned at all in the article. I think that it is of interest to know where Dante placed each of the Cardinal Sins, even when they are in a circle more closely identified with one of the other seven. 'Envy' has also been left unmentioned, but I couldn't identify a simple edit that could be made to include it in its correct circle (number four).

To this purpose, I have taken the liberty of replacing the term, though this time I remembered to link it to the article on sloth to be more clear of its purpose. If you still believe the term is 'pointless' then I apologize.

Superintedentman Brucelee Dunstan

Greetings. I noticed that you reverted the name of "Superintendentman Brucelee Dunstan" back to the original (and incorrect) name of "Bruce Dunstan".

The STG recently went under a small reform wherein they renamed the rank of Superintendent to Superintendentman. I know it may initially sound absurd, but the reason for this change was due to gender equality issues. Hence, if the Superintendent was a Woman, then she would be known as "Superintendentwoman". The reason for this change was of internal fears that the public would instantly assume a Superintendent to be male, when in fact, the ratio between the two are quite similar.

Regarding Bruce's name, that is actually his fullname, although I suppose for professional reasons, It would actually be best to keep it shortened so as to not draw any connections between him and the martial arts epic.

The contributor needs a more focused answer than the template provides: the article needs to show first that he was a principal creator of these games, and that some sources have commented on it. it will take some rewriting, which is why I didn't accept it in the first place. I will comment accordingly both on the article and to the contributor. G13 professors

I will normally decline any g13 on a person who might meet WP:PROF or WP:AUTHOR, unless there are other problems. if it looks like they might meet the standards, it take about an hour to check adequately fix the defects that are usually in the article--I often rewrite extensively to avoid any possible copyvio that I haven't spotted, and then bring it up to a minimal level in format. I obviously cannot properly fix and accept more than one or two a day a day, and I don't want to accept if that are really substandard in format even if they are notable. But I can remove the g13s, so there's time to work on them, and I put them them on a list of articles I intend to try to fix. (When I do try, I usually conclude about half are unfixable or not notable). There's usually no point asking the original editor to deal with them, as they're almost always long gone-- someone who is here must work on them. Often, the original decline will be totally mistaken--as for declines asking for inline citations, which are not required for uncontested unremarkable if the facts and notability are adequately referenced, or because external sources to meet the GNG are insisted upon--the WP:PROF criterion very specifically is an alternative to the GNG. In such cases, had the article not been unreasonably declined, we would not only have an article, but the user might have continued with us.

The way you can best help me is by notifying me of such articles, I am not the least hesitant to delete if appropriate--I've deleted many thousands of articles, many times more than I am able to rescue. Even for academics, which I try very hard to keep if they meet the requirements, I delete more than I save. DGG ( talk ) 05:54, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm trying to do that myself, but there are so many thousands to go through. I'm going forward in time from early 2011, but I can't keep up with the g13 bot. As I see them, I either make an edit to reset the clock, or actually accept them if it's simple enough, or at least put them on my list to look at later. this is why I opposed the g13 bot, and why I tried to get people to do g13 very slowly. I failed at both. (The reason is that people were impressed more with the 10s of thousands that did need to be removed, and avoided thinking about the 5 or 10% that could be rescued because they did not want to do the work. As a rough guide, any article that claims the person is a full professor at a major university is likely to be worth at least examining; any article which asserts publishing multiple non-trivial books, likewise, I usually look a little more extensively than that, but even a rough screen will catch most of them. Hello Solent: I didnt respond to the correspondence about the proposed entry submitted so long ago because I found the instructions/Critique perplexing. Particularly "referencing". Tried to make contact with someone to find out more but didnt get response.

I also find all the code instructions baffling. Even the last two bits of correspondence you sent were confusing {{db-g13}} {{db-g13}} {{db-afc}} and so on. So I gave up long, long ago. There appears to be a bug in the AFC Helper script. It blindly modifies the top-most AFC submission template without first checking to see if that is the current one. The net effect is that if the top template is an older "decline" it disappears from view. Please explain what you mean by the fact that the article is not reliable sources. the source for this information is my father who is what the article is about in his memoirs of which I hold the original and only copy. the facts in the article are as dictated by him and are therefore THE only source and are therefore 100% accurate. How are articles published on Wikipedia about persons now deceased if you will not allow them from the actual source.

WikiCup 2013 September newsletter

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Canada Sasata (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and New South Wales Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

Help

I was wondering why you deleted my edits to the Tear down this wall page because I thought they were good contributions to Reagon's Speech in rhetorical terms.

The wiki page was missing how much the words “tear down this wall” was such a huge move in rhetoric. Thus, I felt like there needed to be a section talking about the importance of it and how it is such a impactful decision made by Reagan to keep it in his speech. He utilized many aspects of rhetorical processes influenced by the Sophists in his own, very influential way. Thus, it is important that the wall should be talked about by itself on the speech’s wiki page.

Also, The reason I wanted to add a little more to the legacy section is because I felt like not enough was written in the original version in terms of how impactful Reagan’s speech was despite its ambiguity in its influence in actually bringing down the wall. By explaining how Reagan’s words were actually impactful in terms of peacefully earning the trust of Gorbachev rather than putting him down is important information. It shows how Reagan utilized the right moment (Kairos) used the appropriate words in his speech (Prepon) and showed to the people of Germany and Gorbachev especially a new possible peaceful world without the wall of suppression (Dynaton)

Kid, I'm 72 years old, taught in music and recording departments of several Ivy League institutions, worked extensively in the music scene in New York, Nashville and Hollywood in the 50's and 60's and have been an accomplished author for probably longer than you've been alive.

As such - your reversion to So Wrong/You're Stronger Than Me has been itself reverted. If it is reverted again, the new reversion will be itself reverted once again. If the behavior continues, the Three Revert Rule will be activated, protecting the page as it stands from any further modification, and a Wikipedia administrator will be notified.

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

I cannot, at present, accept your AfC submission for two reasons:
  • It is not currently cited in the form of footnotes. If you need help on this, see WP:REFB.
  • The first source is essentially a fork of the second one, or vice versa (depending on which you deem to be correct), and relying on a single news article is usually inadequate to establish notability.

I noticed the proposed article for Awitenista was not apporved because it was said to be blank. It is not blank. In fact, it has several paragraphs. I would like to request for a better review. Awitenista is the largest music festival in Ateneo de Davao University and should be considered worthy of an article. There are many verifiable sources by which Awitenista can be brought up from. There might be some mistakes in the created page, but I'd gladly work on that with all due respect. My request for Awitenista page to be accepted is willed in a good way.

You seem to have misplaced the AfC submission template: please do so at WP:Articles for creation/Awitenista. Apparently, the template ended up on the submission's talk page, which is evidently blank. In addition, even if it were to be submitted, it may as well be declined as the only sources posted do not qualify as reliable sources; Facebook pages and Blogspot links do not usually count towards notability as they are open websites; anyone can write anything there. If the club has been involved in a notable event, particularly if it has actively participated in that event, and that the club's participation has been widely covered in independent, then it warrants a separate article; otherwise, it would be better to expand on information about the club on Ateneo de Davao University. I notice someone has now deleted the article under the notability guidelines ("not elected to national office"). The "review waiting" template is appended automatically onto the submission once the 'Resubmit' button on the "submission declined" template is pressed. The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from March 1, 2014 to March 31, 2014.

Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 2400 articles, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3. United States WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
