Grand Army of the Republic > National Woman's Relief Corps, Auxiliary[edit]

Hello Mr. Henderson I am the National Secretary of the National Woman's Relief Corps, Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, Inc. I searched Wikipedia for "National Woman's Relief Corps" relative to Congressionally chartered Patriotic organizations and stumbled upon the Wiki entry you did for GAR: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Army_of_the_Republic. I see a lot of reference is paid to SUV and to LGAR. We have a website as well: www.womansreliefcorps.org. We have a rich history that began with the GAR but bloomed into much more. While other Allied Orders organizations are heritage-based, we are not --- in specific honor of request by GAR. They state in their encampment journals that they wanted us to remain open for membership to all loyal women of high moral character. We could not by definition allow any woman to join who was supporting the Confederacy, but once all those who assisted or were loyal to Confederacy passed away, we pretty much opened membership up for any American citizen female over the age of 13 who is of good moral character.

We have had some notable members: Kate Brownlee Sheridan, Harriet Tubman, Clara Barton, Susie King Taylor, and soooo many more illustrious members/women. We are the ONLY patriotic organization granted by Geneva Council the honor of bestowing upon our Past National Presidents the honor of wearing the Geneva Red Cross. Each of our Past National Presidents are given that distinction due to the close relationship we had with Clara Barton and Mary Logan. But our history is full of more than perpetuation of the memory of the GAR. Though we hold fast to the tenet we are their only recognized auxiliary, and we deeply respect and honor the GAR, we have a lot more history outside the GAR, including our own lobbying for better VA benefits. We trace our written history to early organizers in place and working in concern DURING the Civil War, but certainly officially by 1879. Our National Charter occurred in 1883.

We hold annual National Conventions, and each State potentially can hold their own Department Convention. We have every National Convention Journal, and many State or Department Annual Journals. We also have access to oral histories and written from members who were present at the last true meeting of the GAR (1949) when the members stated that all offices would remain in situ through the remainder of their lives and that all rules established at that meeting would stand in perpetuity. We have a National Headquarters and Museum located in Springfield IL.

We respectfully request that you please be sure to include the NWRC in your entry. It would be appreciated, as "google" sends us to that link when we type in "National Woman's Relief Corps". Our website is being revamped, but it is www.womansreliefcorps.org

In fraternity, charity and loyalty ----- National Secretary National Woman's Relief Corps — Preceding unsigned comment added by AggieThreads (talkcontribs) 16:59, 21 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, AggieThreads; when I visited Philadelphia and helped new editors add material to the GAR article and others, we didn't know about the organization nor about the article Woman's Relief Corps that already existed. On that day we were mostly working on scientific biographies, and a small addition to the GAR article was incidental to that. Wikipedians know as well as anyone, that every topic is connected to other topics and eventually to all other topics. I have established a link in the GAR article; please feel free to add suggestions in Talk:Woman's Relief Corps where other Wikipedia editors can read them, including editors who know more about this topic than I do. I handle many thousands of articles on diverse topics and don't spare a lot of time for each. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:04, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Your userpage says you're a retired switchman. What do you think are the most basic prevention measures people could take to prevent damage to their devices in the event of an EMP strike or solar superstorm? Thanks --TapiokaRed47 (talk) 13:36, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have little expertise in this matter. Turn off, unplug, and store in Faraday cage. Phone companies have many Faraday cages, often called "radiation-proof rooms" or "iceboxes". Of course, only the cage method is compatible with using and protecting at the same time, so that's the way to go when you're not sure of a warning. Me, I'm typing this in a building of brick, mortar, wood and plaster. No cage at all. A skyscraper is a steel cage, though the bars are rather far apart. That's easy to fix by a grid of grounded wires. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:40, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ideas on Wikimovement categorization[edit]

Hi. I really appreciate your thoughtful note at my talk page. you made some excellent point. ok, so is it okay if I move ahead forthwith and with all dispatch, to come up woth some possible plans, or suggestions, for organizing, categorizing, and finding some way to neatly structure these pages? I have a few ideas. I appreciate your help, your insights, and yourr presence on this. Please ping me if you reply. we can carry on this discussion at your talk page; it is much easier that way. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 18:22, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to be late getting back to you, Sm8900. One would think, being an old retired guy made to stay at home by this year's plague, I would have plenty of time on my hands. No, my elderly inefficiency is only one of the delaying factors. And what I say won't be long, or if it is it won't be thoughtful. Anyway it seems to me this is a matter in which a top down approach would work best. That is, instead of starting with our beloved New York City, better to organize the top, worldwide levels first. Start with proposals that will get attention from org minded editors around the world.
That is, Category:Wikimedia includes subcats for all related and supporting things, and ought to have annual subcats, either directly or in Category:Wikimedia chapters. Mention your intention in the appropriate talk page, with a suggested method and request for opinions. Oh, and a briefer mention, with link, in whatever WP:VP division may be appropriate. The procedure, when agreed, might be to make a chapters by year category, with subcats for each Chapter that has much to categorize. You might get some pushback in the initial proposal, but if so, we will have a bigger audience with plenty of ideas and constructive criticism. Once that is settled, it's time for the individual Chapter cats, eventually including of course our beloved NYC, so important in the Movement and even in the real world.
Hmm, perhaps it seems I've been presenting this as if it might be a cute political dodge, but the important thing is, it's a way to make consistency among categories across the whole Wikiworld so it's easy to use. Which one might say is also a way to be Wikipolitically Correct, but what the heck; we can't anticipate and avoid every possible objection. Oof, that's about as much as my mind can hold tonight; have happy editing and don't let the virus catch you before the wave of infections begins to subside. Oh. Don't bother with decade cats. Not enough decades yet, and especially not enough years in the 2020s yet. Let someone else think themselves brilliant, eventually, by inventing them. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:21, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I like your ideas. I want to look these over in depth, and then think of some ways to move ahead. I really appreciate your input. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 00:41, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

GreenThumb GrowTogether[edit]

Hi there! Got your message a few days back. A few days ago (maybe even a week, there's been so much going on) GreenThumb wrote to all GrowTogether workshop leaders offering the possibility of scheduling a virtual workshop instead of the conference workshop. I've been pretty overwhelmed just getting used to the new life circumstances that I haven't gotten any prep work done, despite my expectation that I'd have so much time on my hands staying indoors all the time! If the workshop is reconfigured as a kind of Zoom session, I suppose it would make sense to have it be more of a demo than a hands-on workshop. In some regards this might be easier than a hands-on session. If you would like to still participate, maybe we could figure out a division of labor for a demo -- I've done more work using Structured Data on the Commons than actual image uploading, so maybe we could divide things up along those lines -- I could handle metadata-type stuff, and you could go over some of the more image-focused tasks (uploading, etc.) Send me an email if you want to schedule a call sometime to hash it all out. --TrMendenhall (talk) 15:18, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Cbl62; sometimes things happen as I intended. In the 20th century I often spent a day biking through suburbs for fun, usually with a destination in mind. I've updated the list of film ratings on my blog: https://scottandrewhutchins.wordpress.com/film-ratings/ . Changes at Science History Institute[edit]

Hi Jim, I just saw your reversion to the Wikipedia:Meetup/Philadelphia page, and wanted to bring you up to date. As of last week, the Science History Institute laid off 16 people for budgetary reasons. Sadly the post of Wikipedian in Residence was one of the positions cut, and they will not be supporting the error report page or WikiSalon for the foreseeable future. I am happy to say, however that both will be continuing both on a volunteer basis. It will take a few days for Doreva and myself to get everything up and running, and it will help if you can revert the reversions you made. The old sciencehistory links are dead and will not be returning. We had already replaced the WikiSalon links; the error report link will be added once we have created a new page for that. Best wishes, Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 00:02, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Mary Mark Ockerbloom.  Done It seems my mind went back to my decades in the telephone company, where we had a rule of first testing to ensure that a new circuit actually went to the right place, and only then making it visible to the working system. Good to see that Philadelphia's Wikipedia circuit will still be working, even though hard economic times dictate a cutback. What are the chances of an in-person event giving me an excuse to visit again? Oh, and when you catch me in such an error again, easier just to revert and explain after, rather than wait for me to wake up and check my messages. I am kindly asking whether you could take one picture of the sculpture Medusa With The Head of Perseus which is temporarily exhibited at the Collect Pond Park in Chinatown until the 18th of April 2021.

Hello Jim,

I would like to introduce myself a bit. I am a german Wikipedia editor who is interested in things which are ongoing in and around New York City. And so I am frequently having a look in the New York Times. A couple of days ago I read the article How a Medusa Sculpture From a Decade Ago Became #MeToo Art. It would be nice if a picture of this sculpture would become available to be implemented in a couple of articles. When I was thinking how to get such a picture I searched the categories for Wikipedians in Manhattan and your name catched my focus. Your (nick)name was familar to me because I noticed in the past that you have already taken, uploaded and categorized quite a lot of pictures. And so I am asking whether you are still taking pictures and given the case whether you could take a picture of the aforementioned sculpture which will be exhibited in the Collect Pond Park until the 18th of April 2021.

Best regards and greetings from Dresden/Germany

Drat, @Yeti-Hunter: I was bicycling 500 meters away from Collect Pond Park yesterday, on a photo expedition. Due to the worldwide plague I have not been going anywhere very often. My uploading has even more diminished due to being busy with categorizing in Wikimedia Commons, so my backlog is expanding. However, the park is in Wikidata, and so it is a dot in WikiShootMe and in the Commons App. So yes, eventually I'll pass that location, see the red dot on the map, and snap a picture.
Oh. I just thought. It's a work of art. A new one. That means copyright. In Germany that is not a problem because you have panoramafreiheit. USA, no. And the exhibition is temporary. I can get the park, but the sculpture has these two problems. Ah, now you have made me wish to return to Germany. My only visit there, and only in the southern and western parts of the Federal Republic of the time, was thirty years ago. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:52, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I was not aware that you do not have Panoramafreiheit in the US. So that means that I have to request a permit from the Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment (MOME). At least I can give a try. Just in case I get the permit granted would you mind taking the pictures? I will post any news about the permit here as soon as I get them.
