Can you please review my draft? Sorry for the copyright mistake. I deleted it.Rudra Tenio Chakraborty (talk) 03:16, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

I've accepted it, there are still things that can and should be improved (summaries of the reviews in the Reception section, including what date the IMDB ratings were found on (e.g,. "As of January 3, 2017, the IMDB rating was...") I've also added the article to the Film wikiproject. Thanks! --joe deckertalk 03:52, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, joe decker. I have something to ask. Can I create articles directly without draft? Draft is for unregistered users. I did create articles before directly with article wizard. But now when I start article wizard it asks to create draft. If there is a way to create articles directly, please give me the link. Thanks. Rudra Tenio Chakraborty (talk) 04:18, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
Hi @Rudra Tenio Chakraborty: Yes, you can. Here's the simplest way:
Go to the title of the page you want to create. Let's say you wanted to create an article on me. (Please don't, I'm just using this as an example.) There's already a "Joe Decker" who was a baseball player who is more famous, so let's say you decide on the title "Joe Decker (photographer)". You would then simply search for that title, which would take you to this page: [1]. Do you see the red text, which says, "You may create the page "Joe Decker (photographer)", but consider checking the search results below to see whether the topic is already covered." If you click on the (red) title in that text, it will take you to an edit window [2], and if you save there, it should create a page. Again, please do not do this for me, but replace "Joe Decker (photographer)" with the title of your next article.
Let me know if you get stuck, or something doesn't work, and thank you for your contributions! --joe deckertalk 04:31, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
One more thing--I know it was a mistake, the copyright thing, but avoid that mistake in the future by never cut and pasting into an article draft, even if you expect to rewrite what it says. It's too easy to accidentally miss something. Simpler to avoid the trouble in the first place. Cheers, --joe deckertalk 04:36, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
I appreciate your help. Thanks. The article wizard is updated I guess. Before there was a option to create articles directly. And I will try to avoid breaking copyright laws. Didn't do it intentionally. Rudra Tenio Chakraborty (talk) 04:45, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
I believe you, was just explaining a way to help prevent accidents, it's proven useful to me. Cheers, --joe deckertalk 04:57, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

move to draft - what happens next

Hello! I moved a users article draft:Cheloniology to draft space to allow the user time to source it. That's a new user I think, and he or she might not be able to get through that process without a bit of help, which I intend to provide in this case because I think there should be an article about people who specifically study turtles (despite other users who think it should be merged).

What I'd like to know is, if I contribute to the article myself to enhance sourcing and bring it up to encyclopedic standards beyond a dictionary definition, do I now have to resubmit the article via AfC (since it is now in the line) or can I (being the person who relegated it to draft in the first place) move it back to mainspace if I think it is fit? I await your advice. Edaham (talk) 05:44, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

On a side note, it's nice to see that a AfC reviewer rejected it for exactly the same reasons that I, a NPP moved it to draft, as I've been blundering a bit as a new NPP. Edaham (talk) 05:47, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

@Edaham: While I'm sure others might fuss, I don't see a real-world problem with an accredited NPP reviewer promoting articles they've touched. WP:BOLD and all that. On the other hand, the AfC regulations do have an approved list of reviewers, which you might not be on. To avoid fuss, how about you ping me after you've improved it, and I'll finish any necessary cleanup and approve it? Cheers, --joe deckertalk 16:20, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
sure thing. Will do. Thanks for the reply. Edaham (talk) 17:23, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

request to view deleted content: 'Simone Ahuja'

Hi Joe,

I'd like to request you please userfy or otherwise allow me to view the deleted page 'Simone Ahuja'. Simone is my employer and I am trying to recover the content for her. I understand the page was deleted because it was too self-promotional, so I intend to revise it heavily before I re-publish.

Draft page: Professor Peter Whelan

Dear Joe,

I have received a message that my submission for a Wikipedia page has been declined. The page is 'Professor Peter Whelan'. The tone of the article is, in my view, completely neutral with just facts presented. Citations are presented for the relevant facts. It seems that the issue is that the submission is closely based on a University of Leeds profile. Is that correct? I think if that is the case, the issue is with the text above the contents box, as the remainder of the article only contains a list of publications (which can be found using a legal database) and a number of quotations regarding the reception of the work - quotations which do not appear on the University of Leeds website. I'd be grateful if you could clarify what needs to be done in order for the submission to be accepted. If the first four paragraphs were rewritten in language that is not the same as that appearing on the Leeds website (but contains the same fact-based information) would that be acceptable?

I'd be very grateful for any clarification on this. Thanks in advance for your help!

129.11.30.20 (talk) 09:42, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

Yes, the issue is copyright. The draft that I reviewed had copyright issues that went beyond the bibliography, the most notable bits -- 20+ word word-for-word identical stretches of prose, appear to have been removed. Obviously the titles of works are going to match and not by themselves constitute a copyright issue. You may wish to make use of [3] to verify that you've gotten all of them, then resubmit. Thank you! --joe deckertalk 20:39, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Would you be able to provide me with a copy of the Synthea deleted page?

I authored the page and it was recently deleted due to notability guidelines. I would like to monitor the issue and resubmit when more articles are available.

14:54:24, 2 February 2018 review of submission by 197.27.105.141

Hi, I want to know why you deleted my article and help me publishing it. 197.27.105.141 (talk) 14:54, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi. I didn't delete it, the draft continues to exist at Draft:Mohamed_Ali_Ben_Ammar_(MABA).
I did not approve it, that is, publish it to the encyclopedia, because the article did not show that the subject of the article met our biographical notability guideline. That guideline is at WP:BASIC.
At that article, I explained my reasoning:
"This submission's references do not adequately show the subject's notability. Wikipedia requires significant coverage (not just mere mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject—see the guidelines on the notability of people."
Our notability guidelines for people are difficult for new editors to make sense of. That's unfortunate. You may also take a look at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. I'm still working on refining it, but my hope is to provide a more step-by-step (if still not simple) approach to explaining what we need in terms of demonstrating notability. I hope that it will be helpful.
If you have further questions, please consider asking for assistance at the Wikipedia Teahouse, there should be an invitation on your talk page. They are an excellent help resource for new editors. --joe deckertalk 16:18, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

@Touhidt90: Sorry for the delay in responding. I have two key pieces of advice about writing such articles. First, there's some basic stuff on writing on something you're involved with advice at WP:PSCOI, and that's worth reading if you haven't. (If you have, no worries.) Second, the key thing to writing a good Wikipedia article is to start by finding, reliable, independent sources that discuss the topic in detail. In other words, places where signficant legitimate publications have written pieces that have been through a formal editorial process and talk about Reliance in broad ways, and not based on interviews with people at Reliance. Once you have those sources, writing an article becomes an exercise in writing a coherent summary of those, and then filling in a handful of basic material facts (establishment date, employee counts, etc.) with more direct sources. Best of luck, --joe deckertalk 06:50, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Congratulations

I found myself re-reading Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nancy Heche today, and found I strongly agreed with many points you made there, and thought you made those points well. Okay, we already agreed on key points -- still, I thought I would congratulate you.

I can't remember if we have ever disagreed, in other discussions, but I think I will try to have my ancient brain try to notice if you weigh in in other discussions I am participating in.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 21:34, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

Why, thank you! I haven't been nearly as active at AfD as I used to be (whether as a participant or a closer), but despite the time that's passed I recall valuing your contributions to deletion discussions highly, and so your comment here is particularly appreciated. Request on 10:58:49, 13 February 2018 for assistance on AfC submission by Helga Swart

Hi, I am the communication manager at the Foundation for Professional Development and as a private university in South Africa, we would like to include a entry on what we do etc. The text used is our own intellectual property and has been re-written to the extent that we can do that. How many ways are there to say that we are registered as a private higher education institute according to the relevant laws applicable in SA. I have been struggling with getting this entry approved for quite a while. Please assist in what I can do. Regards

Helga Swart (talk) 10:58, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

You may also find that asking for assistance at the WP:Teahouse to be helpful, they're a great resource for new editors.
With regard to copyright, your article should not be denied over a single three or four word wording correspondence. If there are several and/or longer passages, however, those raise legitimate legal issues for Wikipedia, as anything you put here can be used by anyone for any purpose (save it must be used for attribution), and if you have the legal right to give away a license to do that, then you can establish your identity and legal right to do so by following the instructions at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
You will generally not find this copyright stuff an issue if you follow my advice about sources. If, instead of starting with how you would prefer to talk about your Foundation, you would sit and read what reliable in-depth independent sources say about it and summarize those sources in your own words, you will find that what you write fairly naturally avoids copyright issues as well.
Best of luck! --joe deckertalk 17:27, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi! There's an explanation in the pink box at the top of the draft. You need to add references to reliable, secondary sources, independent of the subject, that discuss the subject in detail. If you'd like additional help in understanding what's needed here, you may want to ask for assistance at the Wikipedia Teahouse. There's a link on your talk page, and they're a great place to get started learning how to work within our sometimes mystifying policies and guidelines. --joe deckertalk 16:29, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

Duplicate Arguments

Every so often, due to an edit on a high use template, Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls gets flooded with articles. After the error has been fixed it can take a day or more for the flood to clear, through normal or null edits or just waiting for pages to be re-processed. During this time we have to wait for the smoke to clear until genuine errors become visible in the category again. Would it be feasible for your bot to run through the category and speed the process up? - X201 (talk) 08:50, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. Can u please review the page that I had created directly the other day as well? Sailesh Gulabani. Princessruby (talk) 18:07, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
@Princessruby: Hi!
First, it looks good so far as I see from a quick look, and is already in the encyclopedia as I write this.
AfC reviewers including myself are performing a very first-level of quality control, primarily looking for really signficant problems (copyright issues, advertising/spamming, abuse, lack of sources, etc.) We manage to review several hundred articles a day, but as a result, the reviews we do are imperfect and limited in scope.
If you are interested in deeper feedback, there are a couple places you can go. You could ask (and this could take time) for a review at our peer review process, and/or ask for someone to look it over at the talk pages of various WikiProjects that relate to the subject. If Peer Review loves your article (after, perhaps, some changes), there are ways of having articles reviewed to get them to a higher standard, look at Good Articles or even Featured Articles. Of these, I'd consider WP:PR my first suggestion.
In any case, thank you for joining us in our efforts to build an encyclopedia! --joe deckertalk 21:46, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your kind words. --Princessruby (talk) 22:26, 30 May 2018 (UTC)--Princessruby (talk) 22:26, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Why did you decline this submission when WP:AFCSTANDARDS says 'Article submissions that are likely to survive an AfD nomination should be accepted and published to mainspace.' Thitikul as a winner of a professional golf tournament passes WP:NGOLF criteria #3. She also passes criteria #5, she's made the cut in a women's major championship. Cleaning up the article isn't a valid reason to decline when the article would pass AFD and you aren't the first editor to do it. @MatthewVanitas: might want to answer too....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 14:57, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

At the time, MINREF. The promotional tone also concerned me, but that wasn't by itself a show-stopper. We do usually decline on MINREF, AfC guidance is somewhat self-contradictory on this and a few related points.
In any case, the article has been improved by two editors since the decline addressing the MINREF issue, and I'm happy to approve it. --joe deckertalk 15:07, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

@RoySmith: More or less, yes. Taman Permai, Seremban

Hi i noticed you deleted my article which took me a long time to learn how to do. Can you please reinstate it and move it back to draft so i can fix it / rewrite it. The reason i wrote the article in the first place is because i had many requests from school kids about the history of the area so i would appreciate if you can let me rework it.

@UPCSB: I would be happy to restore the article so that you can work on it, although it may be (and I don't know yet) impossible to have an article on the topic. I've moved the deleted text to Draft:Taman Permai, Seremban.
There are two fundamental issues that will need to be address for the draft to become an article.
There are at least two hurdles that you'll need to clear for that draft to become an article.
  1. The most important of these is meeting our General notability guideline. This guideline requires a certain amount of independent third-party coverage which discuss the subject in detail, and those references need to appear in the article. No amount of rewording the text of the article can address this concern, we'd need discussions in other reliable reference works (books from reputable publishers, newspapers, etc.) that discuss the place in detail. HOWEVER, there is an exception to this part one, if there is a government of Taman Permai in particular, if it is what in the US would call a town rather than a neighborhood (and the article isn't clear on this point) with a distinct government, then it it would be sufficient to show that, but again, with a reliable reference.
  2. The second part, important but only worth working toward if the above problem can be resolved, has to do with writing neutral text. In cases where we have "multiple reliable independent sources that discuss the topic in detail", this is best done by neutrally summarizing (without copying from) what those sources say in objective language. In cases where we don't have those sort of sources, but just the knowledge that there is an official town or city as indicated in a particular place, my best advice is to start by saying no more than is necessary. It's a town, where it's located, when it was founded, how many people live there, a few facts like that, and let it go.
There are some small issues which should be fixed as well, but if these two issues can be addressed, the rest is quite easy. The one small matter I'll mention is that of references. The way we do references is a bit complex and obscure. I'd recommend reading Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners, which includes a nice video showing how to use the RefToolbar, which makes working with references a whole lot easier.
Best of luck! --joe deckertalk 02:15, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

After this is sorted, I don't think I ever want to submit an article again.

Please Help.

DorothyDorothyelliott (talk) 23:23, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Dorothyelliott:
First, and most importantly, let me express my deepest condolences.
As for reporting the death here, reports of his death here (and, please, let me be clear, this has nothing to do with whether or not I personally believe you, I do) have to follow published sources. There is no other way within our policies and guidelines, much like the paper encyclopedias in the library, what we write is sometimes not up to date with reality.
I have no doubt that that will be frustrating, and I apologize. There are reasons our bureaucracy works the way it does, but it can be, at times, small comfort.

Dear Joe Decker,
My notice of death ref. John Banks Elliott has been reverted (please see below). I found the revert to be a bit hasty as I am waiting on the reference link from the family. I do not think it appropriate to use the copy of his death certificate as reference.
Hello, I'm Stwalkerster. I noticed that you made an edit concerning content related to a living (or recently deceased) person on John Banks Elliott, but you didn't support your changes with a citation to a reliable source, so I removed it.

Thank you for your sympathy, indeed it a sad occurrence.

Dear Joe,

Thank you for reviewing my article on the Realization of export proceeds in Pakistan. I have put references as you mentioned in your review and have submitted it again. Could you please review it again and help me publish this article on Wikipedia, There is too little written on this article.

Hi, since its been an year this article in in draft, I think now the article subject meets the notability criteria and has substantial information and references. Please look into the article, or if need my help I would improve it further so it could be moved to an article. Nauriya, Let's talk - 17:11, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

@Nauriya: I'm travelling at the moment, but recommend resubmitting the article for another reviewer to assess. Best of luck! --joe deckertalk 19:57, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
Because I can improve the article and change its manual of style and then move to article myself but I wanted to ask before I could proceed. Nauriya, Let's talk - 23:09, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
Oh! I'm sorry, usually when I get this sort of note their from the original submitter. I haven't looked at the article in depth (and I'm not in a position to do so due to travel), but as you're an long-term established editor I'm more than happy to WP:AGF for your improvements and move to mainspace. --joe deckertalk 00:34, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

Declined Article for Justin Bratton

Hi there, I'm not sure why the article keeps getting declined as I feel there are plenty of references and the subject is quite well known. What else should I be doing? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ezra Cheung (talkcontribs) 08:09, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Ezra Cheung:
As near as I can tell from the article history, nobody has rereviewed the article since I last did in February. Had you thought someone had declined it again since? If that's the confusion, you will need to resubmit the article by replacing the {{submit}} template in the article with a new one.
I am travelling and won't be able to do the review myself, but I wish you the best of luck. Without having read the article since February, I will say that our notability guidelines are extremely confusing to new editors in general, you are not alone in finding them so. I tried to write up a more direct explanation of those guidelines some time back at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable, and in terms of general advice, that may be helpful.
Best of luck! --joe deckertalk 17:15, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Hey Joe, thanks for highlighting my the plot we used from Tribeca which I actually wrote... Hi @Logansteinhardt: I'm travelling and won't be able to rereview the article myself, but thank you for the improvements, and you will need to {{submit}} the article again for another reviewer to take a look. Best of luck! --joe deckertalk 17:16, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Rush Hour 4

Hi there, I noticed that the Rush Hour 4 page is indefinitely fully protected. I suggest removing the full protection and redirecting it to Rush_Hour_(franchise)#Future_for_Rush_Hour_4 instead of Rush Hour 3, since the topic has become more informative and there are real talks about the creation of the movie. ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Joe Decker. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Hello Joe. There's a lot of drafts stuck in Category:AfC pending submissions by age/0 days ago even though they are older than that, and a null edit fixes the issue. Could you check if your bot is purging the pages in CAT:AFC as it should? Thanks. Galobtter (pingó mió) 19:52, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

@Galobtter:: Yep, based on a quick look, yep, that's not working. And it's interesting because it's traversing the correct categories and attempting to touch the correct articles, and not getting an error. I hope I will have a chance to spend more time trying to make sense of this in the next two days. --joe deckertalk 07:55, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
It might be that forcelinkupdate is broken - both using Special:ApiSandbox and cURL to use the API to purge with forcelinkupdate doesn't seem to do anything (update the categories) for me. Galobtter (pingó mió) 08:38, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi. I am not sure how Yadlapati Venkatarao article that you declined for submission on December 17 landed on main space. Please check. --Bbarmadillo (talk) 21:45, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

It was recreated outside of the AfC process, by what apparently is another editor. Category:AfC pending submissions by age Category:Articles with missing files - Null Bot

Hi, I know the Joe's Null Bot functionality currently does not work, but when it's hopefully fixed in 1.32 could Category:AfC pending submissions by age be added as a daily task? I've been just randomly running a client program using the api to do the same thing now and then to clean thing up before checking the rest. If people create new articles first with image names then upload the new images it creates a false entry in the cat. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 22:53, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Hmmm, wouldn't task 4 already purge all the relevant files? Definitely remind me once the fix (and I'm told the server fix has been coded, but not yet installed) and I'll take a deeper look, and of course we can get Null Bot to fix it if there's a need. --joe deckertalk 23:22, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi again - sorry I was not paying attention and pasted the wrong category, DOH! I meant Category:Articles with missing files, and yes task 4 does the AfC ones for the by age cat as well.... I've been manually doing that every few days as well while the bug was active. It appears the bug should have been fixed in MW 1.32 which is now out and this site now says "MediaWiki 1.33.0-wmf.12" which apparently has the fix for T210307. (I don't get the versioning!). So hopefully the existing tasks will work again and possibly Category:Articles with missing files could be added. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 18:11, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Happy First Edit Day!

Creation of "King Saha"

Hello User:Joe Decker, I have noticed that you previously deleted the page "King Saha" but I don't know the reason why.I noticed it now as I tried to create the page.King Saha is a Ugandan musician and I think he is notable enough. Warm regards I'm Agaba Perez (talk) 21:27, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi Agaba,
I did delete the article in 2014, more or less simply taking the consensus of the community at that time in the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/King Saha. That's been five years, and it's entirely possible that new sourcing has become available in that time, so, no objections to the recreation, if other editors feel that the musician doesn't meet our notability guidelines, they can start a new discussion on the matter. --joe deckertalk 20:32, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
@Agaba Perez: Between you and I, however, the sourcing right now would be unlikely to be considered sufficient to show that the subject meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines. Our notability guidelines are a bit complex, I've attempted to summarize them in a manner closer to plain English at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. I hope you will find them helpful. --joe deckertalk 06:12, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

This is what the new Edit Cards for editing links in the mobile visual editor look like. You can try the prototype here: 📲 Try Edit Cards.

Welcome back to the Editing newsletter.

Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.

Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:

Are you willing to try a new way to add and change links?

If you are interested, we would value your input! You can try this new link tool in the mobile visual editor on a separate wiki.

Follow these instructions and share your experience:

📲 Try Edit Cards.

Recent releases

The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:

  1. Section editing
    • The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
    • The team studied this with an A/B test. This test showed that contributors who could use section editing were 1% more likely to publish the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
  2. Loading overlay
    • The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.

Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.

New and active projects

This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.

  • Edit cards: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. Go here to see how: 📲Try Edit Cards.
  • Mobile toolbar refresh: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
  • Mobile visual editor availability: This A/B test asks: Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor? We are collaborating with 20 Wikipedias to answer this question.
  • Usability improvements: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use.  The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.

Looking ahead

  • Wikimania: Several members of the Editing Team will be attending Wikimania in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the Community Growth space. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
  • Talk Pages: In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin improving talk pages and communication on the wikis.

Learning more

The VisualEditor on mobile is a good place to learn more about the projects we are working on. The team wants to talk with you about anything related to editing. If you have something to say or ask, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Joe's Null Bot status and age categories for pending AfC submissions

Recently the categories of pending AfC submissions have stopped updating as they age. Category:AfC pending submissions by age/0 days ago, for example, contains numerous drafts that are older, such as Draft:Nicholas Reece, which was submitted on 18 July.

Once upon a time your Joe's Null Bot took care of this. You last updated the bot's status page in November 2018 to say that it was down and a fix was in progress, and in April 2019 the Phabricator ticket you linked was marked done.

Did Joe's Null Bot resume service and only recently stop working again, or did the category update task get passed off to some other bot that has now broken down? --Worldbruce (talk) 18:17, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

Requesting for undeletion of the article Sunni Dawat-e-Islami.

Hello, Joe Decker.

As you deleted Sunni Dawat-e-Islami, i have found strong references regarding the article, and the article "Sunni Dawate Islami" is an international, non-political and purely religious movement. It promotes the propagation of the true beliefs of Islam under the teaching of the true sect of Ahle Sunnah Wa Jama'ah, and the article was deleted because the article was inappropiate referenced, so the article was not showing the notability, but i have found the article notable as per references and have some strong reference regarding the article, so i request you to undelete the article, so i can work on it.

Thank You. Hzk12345 (talk) 07:38, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Editing News #2 – Mobile editing and talk pages – October 2019

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this multilingual newsletter

Inside this newsletter, the Editing team talks about their work on the mobile visual editor, on the new talk pages project, and at Wikimania 2019.

Help

What talk page interactions do you remember? Is it a story about how someone helped you to learn something new? Is it a story about how someone helped you get involved in a group? Something else? Whatever your story is, we want to hear it!

Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.

Talk Pages

The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

Mobile visual editor

The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Edit Cards

What happens when you click on a link. The new Edit Card is bigger and has more options for editing links.

Toolbar

The editing toolbar is changing in the mobile visual editor. The old system had two different toolbars. Now, all the buttons are together. Tell the team what you think about the new toolbar.
  • In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
    • One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
    • New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
    • Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
  • Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.

Wikimania

The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.

Looking ahead

  • Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
  • Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.
  • Measuring the impact of Edit Cards: The Editing team hopes to share results in November. This study asks whether the project helped editors add links and citations. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: Edit Cards project page.

This early version of the Reply tool automatically signs and indents comments.

The Editing team has been working on the talk pages project. The goal of the talk pages project is to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. This project is the result of the Talk pages consultation 2019.

Reply tool improved with edit tool buttons
In a future update, the team plans to test a tool for easily linking to another user's name, a rich-text editing option, and other tools.

The team is building a new tool for replying to comments now. This early version can sign and indent comments automatically. Please test the new Reply tool.

  • On 31 March 2020, the new reply tool was offered as a Beta Feature editors at four Wikipedias: Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian. If your community also wants early access to the new tool, contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF).
  • The team is planning some upcoming changes. Please review the proposed design and share your thoughts on the talk page. The team will test features such as:
    • an easy way to mention another editor ("pinging"),
    • a rich-text visual editing option, and
    • other features identified through user testing or recommended by editors.

To hear more about Editing Team updates, please add your name to the "Get involved" section of the project page. You can also watch these pages: the main project page, Updates, Replying, and User testing.
