As someone who was also nominated for adminship by an inexperienced Wikipedian, I want to say I was surprised and saddened by how badly that went - I was headed for bed when I saw the transclusion and expected to be able to research you and probably support when I got up. @Yngvadottir: I was surprised myself. I don't know why users think I would be unfit for the admin tools (especially since I've used them elsewhere). I saw this too Justin. RfA is a brutal, brutal place and very rough on people, and on purpose, because it can be hard to take tools away from someone once given so people will nitpick almost anything. My RfA actually went pretty smoothly by comparison to most but it was still an extremely stressful week for me. I wasn't criticized on things I thought I would be (mostly my lackluster content creation skills), and got attacked for things that I still to this day think were unfounded. It's not something anyone should consider lightly. I'm glad you took the wise route and withdrew voluntarily. I was nominated by someone who was a respected admin (and really if they hadn't come to me for a nomination I wouldn't have ran, I didn't like my chances and felt like I had enough to do without the bit already) and I'm sure things wouldn't have been much better for me if I'd done so under the same circumstances as you. I'm glad this process hasn't upset you too much, I don't know if I'd have taken it as well. -- Atama頭 21:38, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

Chronic Town and Murmur

Regarding your reverts of my changes to the categories: Chronic Town cannot be both the debut EP and the debut album. It is an EP and the debut one per that article's lede. Likewise, Murmur is the debut album. It is the first studio album and R.E.M's first release of an album (debut) and this is also stated in that article lede. I am not going to change them back, but I notice you have been questioned before about this type of reversion. I just do not do edit wars of any kind. So have it your way...whatever. @Fylbecatulous: EPs are albums. Note that Category:EPs is a subcategory of Category:Albums. It can't not be the debut album. This isn't having it my way: the discussion about EPs and their categorization has been had many times for many years in many venues. Naming conventions, Hunt Library

Hi,

I saw you moved James B. Hunt Jr. Library to James B. Hunt, Jr. Library. While I understand convention dictates including the comma before the Jr. for articles about people, shouldn't an article about a library take the library's name? (I.e. does precedent really dictate imposing a punctuation mark in the name of a non-person?)

@Magioladitis: Granted but this is different because those stub names were ambiguous and presumably split into different types of stubs so they removed one generic name in favor of multiple specific names. True. I just answered to a question I thought you posed about redirects. If you check the edit history of who adds redirects for bypassing, you 'll see I am only removing and not adding unless there is a very specific request to do so.

The latter is for not confusing bots that add WPBS in pages or do other changes such as BattyBot and Josvebot. It is certainly not an urgent matter and I am not planning in doing it. Help?

Hi, I finally got a chance to email... well, I still have to sneak to use the minutes here online while I learn how to walk well. Problem: some of the great photos sent to me from the photographers I've dealt with in Flickr require the time to upload them to Wikimedia.org and then more work. I'm going to forward the email I sent from one man in Boston for a few photos needing the upload. Could you do that for me? I am currently on a 17" laptop running Windows 7. I think the only two browsers I have on it are Chrome and Explorer and they both show the same thing. It also appears the same on my iPhone in desktop mode. My other device is down at the moment.

The image is at the extreme left and in the upper part of the side bar. The Wikipedia icon and some of the links are superimposed over the image. I don't know if this is what Sleetwolf is refering to as "under" the sidebar links. I note that Omar-toons has been committing numerous acts of edit war targeted against your edits. I have just made a report of his edit warring to edits on the Pan-Arab colors page.

R.E.M. chronology

Thank you for your kind words. I changed the R.E.M. chronologies so that there was always a "R.E.M. chronology" available for people to click on. I did so because it appears that, in the case of R.E.M., by convention the chronology includes video albums; I'm fine with that. However, you reverted my changes which were based on that assumption, and in doing so highlighted a problem with the chronology templates.
While the templates for live album and studio album allow you to incorporate the above convention into the first chronology, the video chronology template does not - the word "video" is always in the chronology, even if you blank out the type.
Hence I moved stuff around so that if there was a video article, I would create an R.E.M. chronology below that. Does that explanation make sense? If not, let me know. If yes, could you possibly revert the changes made... or come up with a good justification for "R.E.M. videos video chronology." :) Fantailfan (talk) 01:00, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

@Fantailfan: Right: the template reads "videos". I can actually edit complex templates and I'll try to change that functionality so that the main chronology in {{Infobox album}} leads in a straight line from X to Y to Z and that additional chronologies can highlight videos if users want to navigate those. How I Met Your Mother

In this edit, I have manually reverted one of your edits to Duel Citizenship, and integrated information you removed in another. While Eaglestorm seems to be mass reverting your edits (see here and here for reverts made today), with a series of repeated edit summaries using phrases such as "pogrom" and "johhny comelately editor", I have ensured that the tags you placed remain and that my edit is completely justifiable.

This is my interpretation of what has been happening: you made a series of mass edits on HIMYM articles about a month ago, removing sections you deemed to be unencyclopedic (presumably thinking of WP:TRIVIA and WP:V when making the edits). Many have been partially or fully reverted over this past month, especially by Eaglestorm. By sending you this message, I have finally gotten around to trying to spark discussion as I have not seen any place where this issue is being discussed. (Please point me to a discussion if there has been one.) I have no opinion on whether you or Eaglestorm were acting wisely when making edits to these articles but it seems to me like we should get consensus on whether "Cultural references" and "Barney's blog" sections are valid, and whether anything needs referencing if they are to be kept.

I am also sending a (briefer) message on the same topic to Eaglestorm. Based on the Busy template on his/her talk page and the fact that (s)he has been reverting your edits in big blocks, with large spaces of time between, may mean there will not be a response from his/her end, or no response for a while. I am willing to discuss this here, on my talk page, on any relevant HIMYM talk page or anywhere else. First: I would like to point out that this message should be read in a perfectly polite tone. Tone is often misconveyed online and since I originally thought your reply was somewhat rude, I would imagine you are going to think the same about my reply unless I clarify this now.

Secondly, I don't believe I ever said the information was trivial, and if I did, I didn't mean to. I merely stated that WP:TRIVIA was something you were basing your edits off - and would like to mention that it only concerns how trivia in list format can be presented better: it is not (unless I'm misreading the nutshell template) justification for removing content entirely.

Thirdly, I am somewhat afraid you and/or Eaglestorm are going to start mass reverting edits. Please don't.

Fourth, I am definitely against any sections explicitly titled "trivia", and have often reverted edits like that in the past.

Fifth, I'm still not getting a sense of proper justification here. Do you object to the content because it lacks referencing? If references were provided, would you be fine with the content? @Bilorv: I did not mean to be condescending in my previous post: you are correct that I am attempting to say that sections of trivial information are inappropriate and those are examples of such sections. Citing trivial information is not sufficient, as it's still trivia but any uncited information can be removed at any time. E.g. look at FA- or GA-class TV episode articles and you'll see that none of them have sections like this. Listing the music that appears in an episode is useful only for explaining how it relates to the episode's construction, reception, notability, etc. (with citations). These kinds of trivial lists are entirely appropriate for http://himym.wikia.com (and can be easily ported there). Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate list of information nor is it a repository of in-universe plot summaries so several of these articles are appropriate for alternate venues or will have to be restructured and cited. Although resorting to WP:OSE, Lisa the Vegetarian does contain a section entitled "Cultural references". The article is FA-class and the section certainly meets that standard. This was the first FA-class article I thought of - A Streetcar Named Marge and The Last Temptation of Krust also have similar sections. While no HIMYM section that I've seen meets any of those standards, I do object to absolute removal of anything that can be labelled "trivia".

The "Barney's blog" sections seem to me to be an extension of the plot description - just because they are outside of the show (and possibly out of canon) does not mean they are irrelevant. They appear on the CBS website and simple one-line descriptions of the blog seem to me to be relevant.

Given the millions of viewers that watch each and every episode just on its first broadcast in the US, and the hundreds of millions of views it gets on repeats and in other countries, I also think music in the show - especially significant clips - can be relevant. Take the song "500 Miles", for instance: it is used in several episodes (first in Arrivederci, Fiero) and even has its own story described by Future Ted.

I have discovered several songs I love from the show: I would imagine I am not the only one who found songs through the show, whether simply listening once on YouTube or saving to favourites and playlists. I remember reading multiple blogs online complimenting the music used by HIMYM: they really do use music very effectively. I remember vividly the haunting "Stones" music in the background of "A Change of Heart", for instance. Anything large enough to be explicitly recognised by a large portion of viewers, whether a cultural reference or song, is something I would certainly consider mentioning in the article. @Bilorv: Cultural references sections are useful and necessary when you have a parody of pre-existing media (such as "A Streetcar Named Marge"), dense or obscure references to a person's life and work ("Lisa the Vegetarian"), or which have themselves generated significant coverage in third-party works (the Canyonero in "The Last Temptation of Krust"). Frequently, these sections are used in articles about (e.g.) Family Guy or South Park just to explain a joke or as trivia and fan theories. If a piece of music was moving or important, then it will be referenced in third party sources and can be discussed in the reception or mentioned in the plot of the episode. I think one of my biggest flaws as an editor is identifying reliable sources. Please take a look at [4], [5] and [6] and see if any are "reliable" and contain music that would be worth mentioning (or expanding beyond a simple list if it is already mentioned) in either the article about the song or the article about the episode it was used in. While my opinion is definitely not reliable, I would certainly agree with several pieces of music mentioned there - and was listening to one earlier today while editing. The spaces were doing their job fine with no need for nbsp at all -- compare before and after the change, they look exactly the same, but before with 600 characters less. The guy who took those photos is an amateur photographer who attends nearly all musical events featuring musicians of the 1960s-- especially those involved in protest movements. Question about flags in infoboxes

Usual use of flags once designated the country of origin and/or place of death in biography articles of musicians. I was a fairly new Wikipedian at the time, (or just too lazy or busy like now) to care when en.Wikipedia agreed that flags do not belong there-- it should be found in the text of the articles. Back then, prolific editors here removed most of them, though I have found occasional cases that weren't cleaned up. My question is about non-biographic articles (sort of) like this one for Andy Green -- Wing Commander Andy D. Green, OBE BA RAF. Any idea as to policy?
