Delta Sigma Theta members category[edit]

Every single article listed that I added came from the article that lists the members of the sorority. Until proven otherwise, I am assuming every woman listed on that page belongs there and therefore in the category. Museum hacks and museum edits[edit]

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

Phi Gamma Delta letters[edit]

I received your message regarding the reason why the changes removing the Greek version of the fraternity letters were considered censorship. While I question whether simply changing the way the letters are displayed from their Greek to their English equivalents should actually be considered "censorship," I understand the point you're making and can abide by the explanation. Naraht, I see I'm not the only one to be surprised by the reversion of "FIJI" to "ΦΓΔ". I don't have any skin in the game here. I'm a Greek, an experienced Wikipedia editor with tough hide, and I'm not a Fiji. Nor do I favor giving one group any perceptual edge over another, akin to saying their letters are more special then ours. But in writing the articles where Fiji's name is mentioned, members wrote to me asking for this courtesy, and so I went with it. Really, why the heck not? I'd point out that this IS NOT censorship - governments censor. Rather, what this IS about is a respectful accommodation to how that group wants to be identified. Further, since I noted the rationale as references on the pages I authored, perhaps it would have been more helpful for you to have addressed the matter on a Talk page. @Dougfields: @Jax MN: WP:CENSOR and indeed Censor make it clear that censorship is a concept applied to Wikipedia rather than just by governments. Wikipedia has received a large number of requests from various Muslims to remove images preporting to be of Mohammed, and fulfilling their requests would be censorship of the article on which it occurs. On the Talk page for the Phi Gamma Delta article, Question 6, there is information for how *on that article* a setting can be done for a user with an account so they don't see it. That enclosing script can be added to other locations where the greek letters exist, but the information on how to use it would be necessary. If the President of Exxon-Mobil asked that wikipedia refer to it by Esso in Wikipedia, we wouldn't do so unless that was the way that the NYT & Washington Post started doing so. The legal name of the group is Phi Gamma Delta,
The fact that Phi Gamma Delta limits where members of the fraternity use it *is* a relevant piece of information to be mentioned in the the article about Phi Gamma Delta, however that limitation is only for the members of the fraternity, which neither Wikipedia *nor* the large majority of its members are. I'm also a member of a Greek Letter Fraternity (mentioned on my user page). I've also been through this discussion at Talk:Phi Gamma Delta. I fully support the use of FIJI when the abbreviations ATO or DU or Phi Kapp is used and recently FIJI was *added* to the descriptor at the Phi Gamma Delta page.(note, I asked their national when to use FIJI and when to use Fiji, and the answer that I got was FIJI when referring to the Fraternity, Fiji when used as an adjective (so, he is a FIJI, he lives in the Fiji house), but I can't find that referenced). We have a difference of opinion then. Naraht, you do a lot of good on Wikipedia, which I'll state for the record, because more casual readers and editors may think you are bullying over a small potatoes issue. Yeah, I wish FIJI used letters like others do. But it takes all kinds to make a world, and I would therefore grant them that small courtesy since they asked me with what I thought was great sincerity over a reasonable point of their own branding. Sheeesh. This isn't Mohammed, and they aren't Exxon. @Jax MN: No, it isn't Mohammed. But the policy covers matters great and small. I've spend *years* along with other editors dealing with the continued deletions of the greek letters on the Phi Gamma Delta page (the large majority of which weren't even close to as courteous as Dougfields). At one point even the replacement of the letters with a small image of the Phi Gamma Delta flag (Purple with white letters and a star) was considered, but the decision was made to keep consistency with the other GLOs. I'm just not sure why "..their own branding" should ever be a consideration in what should and should not be on Wikipedia. (And I've had to explain this to my *own* national fraternity!)

Your common.css page[edit]

Hi; I notice that in User:Naraht/common.css you have the CSS rule 

.ambox-Orphan{display: inherit !important;}

- please note that there is an error in this (almost certainly copied from an old version of Template:Orphan#Visibility) which causes incorrect display in some browsers.

To check this, visit this page and look at the second bullet (the one that precedes the text "This article is an orphan ..."). If this bullet is not in the same alignment as the other four, but displaced to the left, you can fix it by altering inherit to table in the CSS rule mentioned earlier. If that doesn't work either, alter it to block.

@Puppysnot: Well the phrasing where the chapter names were added may need to be altered. Also, the descriptions of the Professional seems a little stilted, at the level of *anyone* who wants to rewrite them, I'd probably be happy with. No reference for Chi Epsilon. Sorting on the dates puts ADPhi in third place, even though Beta Theta Pi claims to be third. We may want to add a dts hidden to put that one at the end of the year. Let me know if I should copy this list to the article talk page...Naraht (talk)
Thanks for the feedback. I rephrased the chapter names where it needed to be done, expanded some professional society descriptions slightly (it's difficult to find notes about them though, since most don't have their own chapter websites), added a reference for Chi Epsilon, edited Beta's description, and added a few more honor societies. This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

The entire article could use more appropriate references, but it simply is harder to find those for the RP than for some other places. Sid Miller[edit]

Even though I did not write the article, I am failing to understand your recent revision (revert) that you recently did. Why were the wikilinks to his high school removed and instead, the use of the school district as a wikilink. To me, the way this is now written is grammatically incorrect. Does anyone really care what counties the school district he attended is located? If I wanted to know more about his school, I would go to his school page. @Milca jnr:I wasn't the one who changed the article back to the redirect. (Strictly speaking that doesn't count as a closing, but he's right about the sources being insufficient) What you did is still available at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Katya_Zamolodchikova&oldid=692293868 . I'd suggest copying it to your sandbox and improving it. It would be reasonable for most if not all of the Queens who have been on RuPaul's drag race to have pages, including Katya. Take a look at some of the other pages in Category:RuPaul's Drag Race contestants (The winners are in a subcategory). I guarantee you *if* the references looks like those on Laganja Estranja or Alexis Mateo then it is *much* likelier to stay.Naraht (talk) 21:51, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Phi Sigma Kappa Chapters[edit]

Hello Naraht. I'm not convinced that WP:EL requires or suggests the removal of website links to the chapters cited on the page, List of Phi Sigma Kappa chapters. You deleted them all, not even attempting the median step of turning these into reference items. I disagree with the necessity of your edit, but have little time to address the matter as I am at work. However, I thought I would challenge you on this since you and I have corresponded and I appreciate your previous work. @Jax MN:. To me, this is almost a perfect example of what is meant by the following text in Wikipedia:External_links#Links_in_lists:

"External link sections are not prohibited at the end of stand-alone lists or at the end of articles that contain embedded lists. However, the lists themselves should not be composed of external links. These lists are primarily intended as providing direct information and internal navigation, not a directory of sites on the web. This section does not apply if the external link is serving as a citation for a stand-alone list entry that otherwise meets that list's inclusion criteria."

The large number of the sites are either facebook pages (which are inappropriate as links in most cases, and inappropriate as references in almost all cases) or chapter websites whose home pages do nothing to reference the data in the list other than the existence of the group. While some of the chapter websites have history sections which verify initial chartering, it is rare that the actual homepage of the site does. To take an example. the webpage for the chapter at UVA (which shouldn't have two www's) is a redirect to a page on the PSK website for the state of Virginia. Ohio State's has a subpage which would make sense as a reference, but not the mainpage. U of Michigan's is a facebook page. I don't see that any of these actually represent a reference for data other than the fact that at most, the chapter exists.Naraht (talk) 21:55, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
