Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu

I went to Barnet v Bradford earlier this season, and his shirt sayd "Guylain". I think it makes sense to list what a player wears on his shirt, in the same way that you don't list Ronaldinho as "Moreira". ArtVandelay13 07:58, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Ahhh, skip it. Looks like there was a proposal for this about six months ago, but the template wasn't actually made at the time (in part for the same reason I nominated it for deletion - the fact that the majority of managers are ex-players, meaning a big overlap in stub types). I'll tidy up the template so that it leads to a stub category (an upmerged one for now, that is, one for an existing stub type with a wider scope - if there are enough stubs using it it may get its own category later). I guess it's possible it could be the same guy, but I have no information to confirm one way or the other - literally the only info I've been able to turn up on "our" McMillan is already in the article. I have no source for his birthplace, date, etc. The statement that he never played is based on the fact that I could find no John McMillans on allfootballers.com, but I notice they have "your" guy down as Johnny.....

Ken Leek, and List of BCAFC managers

Sadly, Mr Leek is a long way down my list of wonders and things to do, I'm still struggling with the main club article and writing stubs for players/managers lists, so your Bradford input would probably get there before anything of mine.

Re your manager list, just a quickie on Soccerbase as a source. Their stuff is (mostly, though certainly not entirely) accurate for what they include, but they don't include everything.

For instance, Robert Campbell's Soccerbase figures only include league games, and not the 1905 FA Cup. The reason being, they appear to have a cutoff point for inclusion of FA Cup games set at "Round 1", regardless of how many qualifying rounds clubs had to play before reaching "Round 1". (In the olden days, they changed the format on a regular basis.) Same applies to 1906, where you played at least one qual round before "Round 1".

It's not just long ago, either. See Soccerbase for Bradford City 1982-83 (which i was looking at re small cups), they don't have dates for any round of the league or FA cups, so the proviso written under every manager's history NB: Only games with a date in the database counted here applies and these results aren't counted. Also, they've updated quite a lot recently, so you may find their totals changing as more matches are added.

Small cups. If you're intending to count stuff like Full Members cup, FL Group cup etc be aware that Soccerbase doesn't.

Dates. If they don't know the date a manager was appointed, they'll put 1st of the month, similarly left on last of the month. You and Soccerbase have (for instance) Bryan Edwards leaving on 17/1/75 and Kennedy taking over on 1/1/75. One might wonder whether they double-count the matches in the overlap period. Doesn't bear thinking about.

(As to not entirely accurate, if you look at Birmingham City managerial history, you'll notice we didn't have one at all for 14 months between April 1964 and July 1965) cheers, Struway2 10:23, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

The main thing is, don't worry about it. No-one expects perfection, you can only do your best with the source data available.

What I did on work-in-progress List of Birmingham City F.C. managers was cross-check the soccerbase figures against my BCFC Complete Record book. Didn't take all that long, surprisingly. Assuming you have access to the corresponding BCAFC book, the procedure would go as follows:

• for each manager, take soccerbase's approx dates of tenure and add up how many league games played out of detail pages in book (for whole seasons obviously you just add on 42 or whatever, only real tedious bit is counting odd bits of season) and FA/League cup games Then if the total differs from soccerbase, which from about WWI to 1960s mine generally didn't, check against soccerbase's season pages to see what they're missing (usually early cup rounds) and add in the W/D/L just for those games.
• Or do it the other way round - look through each soccerbase BCAFC season to see what cup games they're missing compared to the book, then add the W/D/L in to the appropriate manager. (depends whether you find it easier to read book or screen)
• Only do a very few at a time or your eyesight goes funny.
• Then add in minor cups if desired, though you may well choose not to. Soccerbase includes FL Trophy in recent years, but the best general reference for it is Jeremy Hicks's site, which includes match dates, where FCHD doesn't.

As to dates of appointment, I'd just put the months in your list unless you have a reason to believe the precise date. Odd games are bound to end up misallocated between managers because of the inadequacies of the source data. It doesn't really matter what competitions you include, so long as you say what you're counting and are consistent with that.

I shall now go and tell soccerbase that Joe Mallett was appointed Birmingham manager in 1964, not 65. :-) cheers, Struway2 09:44, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Seasons list FLC

Hi, Noticed the comment/query about referencing. Are you aware that the FCHD has you reaching the Intermediate round of the FA Cup in 1905, but your list has Round 1? Don't know if you're aware of this site, but it has a nice at-a-glance league and big cups summary, laid out ideally for proofreading. Also, it wouldn't hurt to reference soccerbase's Bradford City page rather than the site front page. Bradford seasons

Yep, for the League Cup in 1964-65 the 5th round was the Quarter final Round in which Bradford lost 7-1 at the hands of the mighty Villa ;) Whilst soccerbase does have some issues with other stats, its competitions listings are usually sound. My source is Rangers Player by Player (Crowood Press 1990). Hi, Didn't realise how long it's been since you put your manager list up for peer review, just went for a look and found it archived. Sorry about that, got distracted by my lot's managerial changes. Below is what I would have said, please ignore or make use of as you wish.

• I know it's hard to get the balance right between short sentences and flowing prose, but some of your sentences are a bit long and confusing. E.g John Docherty had taken over two months before relegation was confirmed, and during the close season he signed Sean McCarthy to solve the club's goal-scoring problem as well as a number of his former players from Millwall but he could not help City bounce back, before being replaced by Frank Stapleton.
• move which shocked the Bradford public, pot of cash, bit tabloidy?
• For some of the opinion stuff sourced to your book (McFarland leaving in controversial circumstances, move which shocked the Bradford public) if there's a particular quote from the book to illustrate your point, you could always put it in the footnote. (Obviously if the book takes half a page to explain whatever it is, you couldn't.)
• Honours column. Cup winners rather than champions.
• Don't suppose you'd consider using normal size print rather than small?
• Do you really need the almost-invisible dashes in otherwise empty boxes?
• Soccerbase. If you correct and add omissions from another source, say where. If you don't, say what's missing from (or what's included in) the manager stats.
• References. Give full details of each book source the first time you refer to it, and then you can just say e.g. Markham, Legends, p. xxx on subsequent occasions.
• Web sources should include date accessed, and news sources ought really to include publication date.

Soccerbase (my favourite). What I mean is, if you add in any stats from a source other than Soccerbase, so that the figures in the list differ from those in the Soccerbase reference, then put a note to say where the differences came from. What I did with List of Birmingham City F.C. managers was put a general note at the top saying "Manager statistics come from Soccerbase, cross-checked against Matthews, Complete Record (up to 1995), RSSSF (for Anglo-Italian Cup 1996), and FCHD (1996 onwards). Omissions and other discrepancies are corrected from these sources."

If on the other hand you're sticking with Soccerbase's stats throughout, then probably you should change the only professional, competitive matches are counted bit to mention any such games that aren't counted because of Soccerbase's omissions.

As to sourcing info that isn't discussed in detail in the article, the reader can look at a web source themselves to see what you're on about. If it's sourced to a book, the reader generally can't, so if there's a small quotation that can go in a footnote it can help to illustrate the point. As an example, History of Birmingham City F.C.#1939 – 1965 speaks of a "solid defensive performance" in the 1963 League cup, which is sourced to a book in footnote 33, where I included a quote from the book to justify the "solid defensive". It isn't necessary to do that sort of thing, but sometimes it can be helpful.

• Do you need the paragraph at the start of the career section? It seems only to act as a summary for the rest, which is already in the lead.

• It looked probable he would soon start a game. I'd lose this sentence, it adds nothing, is WP:OR and WP:POV.
  • it think this is mention in one of the refs. Don't know which one though.
• Maybe start an international section and move most of that stuff to it, while making lesser references in the club section, so as not to muddy the water as much. Though this is probably personal preference.

Hello again, as you commented on this during the deletion discussion, I wonder if you could comment on my proposed criteria on this page? We now have the ridiculous spectacle of Port Vale and Notts County being described as giants when, no disrespect to their fans, they clearly aren't. As I've already removed the Havant result twice I think it would be breaking the spirit of 3RR to remove again. However, I firmly believe we need tight criteria on such a list to stop it growing exponentially. An historic county versus A historic county

Hi. I've just seen your edit to the Yorkshire article. Personally, I feel that "an historic county" makes more sense grammatically than "a historic county". It might also be worth considering that the Yorkshire dialect tends to drop the "h", making "historic" sound like "istoric", and therefore "an" more appropriate than "a". Wallwork stats

The Royal Antwerp website gave me almost everything I needed, and I've emailed them to see if they can point me towards me the final detail I need. From their site, it seems that he played in 16 league games (scoring 2 goals), and 3 playoff games. But he also played in two other games (scoring no goals), one of which was a friendly:

• 10.01.99 Standaard Wetteren - R.A.F.C. 0-6
• 27.02.99 K.F.C. Dessel Sport - R.A.F.C. 2-1

Hi, you removed my addition of Haworth Cat Rescue as a "blatant advert". The addition of Haworth Cat Rescue was not intended to be an advert, but I do think that the organisation is notable enough to have an entry on the Haworth article - They have been established in excess of 10 years and have won a national award. I did consider writing an article on them but it would have been difficult to write it as I would have mainly had to rely on the various webpages from Haworth Cat Rescue, which I agree would have looked like blatant advertising. ITFC stats

Hey, yeah it's difficult. I sit and watch WP:FLC like a hawk, for instance in the past couple of days I've reviewed an NHL hockey trophy list, a list of tall buildings in Manchester, a list of Tendulkar's centuries and the series list of Peep Show. I'm no expert in any of those really. If people look at the list and don't want to review it at WP:FLC then I'm not really sure what we can do about it! Capitalisation of FA Cup rounds

According to this link, each round of the FA Cup is referred to as a proper noun, hence "First Round Qualifying", "Extra Preliminary Round" and "Fifth Round Proper". Furthermore, BBC Sport reports here that the word "Round" in "Player of the Round" should be capitalised. – PeeJay 23:07, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

It seems the BBC are remarkably inconsistent with things like this. On their main FA Cup news page (here), they use "1st Round", "2nd Round", etc. (i.e. numeric ordinals and "Round" capitalised), while on their FA Cup fixtures page (here), they refer to the "Sixth Round". Notability

Concerning your question on notability, see my comments here and here. I'm very dissapointed that people chose not to reply, I couldn't really raise the issue with any of the main contributors to the new criteria (yourself, PJ, 57, Angelo, Matt etc) to avoid percieved COI. I was very pleased when we finally got some well thought out, simple unambiguous criteria and was looking forward to AfDs without constant questions about and redefinitions of the criteria (what about xxx precident, what about the Anderlecht problem etc) but when the new criteria were undermined by people citing one sentence from WP:ATHLETE I basically gave up on WP:FOOTY (for now?). I've got plenty of articles and categories to work on, sod trying to create a set of decent notability criteria for other areas of the game if other people basically ignore them in favour of the status quo. Peer review idea

Hi, I have made a proposal that no peer review request be archived without some response. To aid in this, there is a new list of PR requests at least one week old that have had no repsonses beyond a semi-automated peer review. This list is at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog.

There are just over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, so I figure if each of these volunteers reviewed just one or two PR requests without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog (as there have been 2 or 3 such unanswered requests a day on average).

If you would be able to help out with a review or two a month from the "no responses" backlog list that would be great (and much appreciated). Please discuss questions, comments, or ideas at the PR talk page and thanks in advance for your help, Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 00:10, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I wasn't trying to make a point at the FLC but I'm just really wary that there's going to be a major shift soon on these lists. Generalising, the US contributors who are complaining about our selective lists don't have thousands of inclusions to worry about, it's going to be a challenge.
