Re: E-mail

I'll take a look at it over the next day or two. Granted, copyediting and checking like that is actually my weak spot when it comes to article building. If you want a good user for copyediting (knows little of baseball, which is to your advantage in a sense), I'd ask User:GrahamColm, who helped push my FAC over the hump. I'll still do what I can though. Wizardman 02:52, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi RyRy!

Your navigation bar image for home (The caste) isn't a link like the rest of the images. I have had a look at fixing it, but since you are using image maps instead of my table to make links, im not going to risk breaking the entire bar with my tries. Just to let you know in case this needs to be fixed :) Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 09:05, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh, thanks for letting me know. Yeah, I decided to use something else than what yours is. By the way, you just might have one of the best user page designs ever. But I make it look better with mine. :P I've received a lot of credit from users, but I always point you out, btw. I'll see if I can fix the castle link. -- RyRy (talk) 09:09, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi RyRy,

I am asking for a big favours of yours. I nominated the article Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Austria) for featured list, but there were too many small grammar problems, so we decided to withdraw it, and do a peer review first. The list is complete and very well sourced. It also followed all he suggestions given in Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Belgium) (recently promoted to featured list), so in general is in a very good shape. Only the description fields for the coins are in a need of a good copy/edit. Can you please help us to get this list promoted?

Many thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 06:13, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, I currently have many requests at the moment.... But I'll try to squeeze that article in. I'm currently on semi-wikibreak by the way. I hope that won't be a problem. I'll do my best to copy-edit the article. -- RyRy (talk) 06:21, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your quick reply, take your break, I am sure you will be helpful once you're back, if it is not in this article is in the other 20+ that we have in line for promotion, all of them related to euro silver and gold coins, just different countries. Thanks again, Miguel.mateo (talk) 06:31, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Subpage

I came across your patrol page (User:RyRy/Patrol) and have found it very useful. Would you mind if I copied it's content and made a page for me? If you want, I could trade a barnstar for permission.....--LAAFan 18:13, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh, you can copy it. To be honest, I've never used at that page for quite a while, but I think I should use it again. You may copy it. And about the barnstar, it's not up to me. It's not right to ask someone for a barnstar. Barnstars are given out in recognition of someone's work that others notice, not what the person who did the work noticed. ;) It's up to you LAAFan, not me. Cheers, RyRy (talk) 00:19, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for giving me the permission. As for the barnstar, I'll give you a smiley instead, as I've given at least two barnstars to you already. Cheers.--LAAFan 16:05, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Sure, I'll take a quick overview and see if anything stands out. Useight (talk) 04:45, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Okay, I only went through your last 50 edits, but I found quite a variety within those 50. You closed a few AFDs recently and they all check out fine. You reverted some vandalism and reported some IPs to AIV, both of which were subsequently blocked, so that was good, too. I saw you even removed some incorrect AIV reports. Looks good. If I was going to give you a grade, it'd be an "A". Useight (talk) 05:03, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh, yeah, that was my mistake. I was reverting it to the wrong version. Thanks for the notification. -- RyRy (talk) 01:25, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, you did revert it right the first time. « Milk's Favorite Cøøkie 01:27, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
True, I thought there was more POV but I reverted it to the wrong reversion, but there was actually no more POV edits. If you look at the history, an IP added POV. The next edit, he removed it. The next edit, he added it back. When he added it back the second time, I reverted it. I then looked at the history, and saw another POV, but the thing is, I didn't see that the IP removed it himself, this leading to me adding back POV. -- RyRy (talk) 01:32, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Latest update

Unfortunately, you have a problem. All six hooks (or is it seven) are articles about the United States. We try very hard to avoid that, and an update like that will be sure to get complaints.

You need to have at least half the articles about non-US subjects, interleaved so that the US-related hooks aren't adjacent to one another. Another thing to look out for is putting two "people" hooks adjacent to one another, or two "building" hooks, or any two hooks about the same subject. Gatoclass (talk) 08:33, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes, they can still be switched, I do it quite a bit myself, although it is a bit of a nuisance. If you don't want to substitute alternative hooks, don't worry about it, I'll see if I can dig up a few myself and throw back some of the Yank hooks later. However, I can't be bothered doing that right away, so you are welcome to give it a go in the meantime if you want. Gatoclass (talk) 08:44, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Request to review India House

Hello RyRy, I was wondering if I could ask you for a massove favour and help copyedit India House. This artilce is currently listed for FAC. A reviewer in the FAC mentioned quite strongly that the text is not upto the mark. I thought it would help a lot if somebody had a look and suggested any improvement, since it has already been copyedited once by another editor and once byself. Please understand that I am neither looking for your support in the FAC, nor am I asking you to comment on wether it deserves or not to be FA, since I realise this would be canvassing. Nontheless, any comments on improving the article would be extremely welcome. rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 01:37, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Hey Ryan, I have a quick question. I have this page, full of show/hide lines. Do you know of a way to put these lines in columns, with probably three articles per row. It would be like:

A......[show] B......[show] C......[show]
D......[show] E......[show] F......[show]

WikiProject Articles needing copy edit (tentative name)

Hello there!

I have begun laying the groundwork for a new WikiProject that has a very simple goal, to improve Wikipedia by dealing with the articles tagged for copy edit, and I am wondering if you are interested in helping me start it. This project is not a clone of WP:LOCE because we will not deal with requests for review (that is currently handled by our good friends over at Peer Review).

I expect that this will be a relaxed, happy and casual WikiProject, because participants will be able to take things at their own pace and use the project page to ask other participants for help. The project proposal is here, and I have created an almost-functional project page in my userspace here.

There are now over 4000 articles needing copy edit, and very, very few people working on them, so any help, however small, is appreciated. If you are interested, please sign up at the proposal page. Once we have enough people, I will shift the project page, along with its subpages from my userspace into the Wikipedia namespace. For now we can use this section of my talk page to discuss the direction and details of the project, and, of course, its name. *grin*

Cheers!-Samuel Tan 12:32, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Good hello, just a quick note asking you to reconsider your closing of the AfD for National-Anarchism before it goes to DRV. I know I was a lone voice crying out for its removal but I really don't think anyone else bothered to read the sources, they ALL fail WP:RS, white=power websites, conspiracy theory, people's homepages, and propaganda from the subject of the article. There is not a single reliable source in the whole article. Cheers. L0b0t (talk) 23:21, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Hm, I had a feeling you would come to me. Yeah, even I thought I should have let that go longer. Sorry about that. Sure, I'll reopen it. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 07:50, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Review

Well, I promised you a review, so here goes….. I think at the minute, you’ve got a very good mix of edits. Your work at DYK is fantastic – you do a really good job at reviewing hooks and clearly understand the process. I’ve looked at your mainspace edits, and again, your cleanup/maintenance edits are great. Can I suggest creating a few articles? It’s actually really good fun and you learn a hell of a lot. When you see an article you’ve created in the DYK section of the main page, you get a real buzz! Also, it might be a good idea to add more content to articles – even if it’s just references, it helps the encyclopedia more than cleanup or tagging. You state on your userpage that you comment on AfD’s – I’m not seeing a lot of it if I’m being honest. You might want to start participating more in these discussions, but remember, always link to policy and try and improve the article in question before commenting – saving articles is far better than commenting to delete if there are sources available. Your vandal fighting is also good, and you clearly know when to report users – just don’t neglect other parts of the encyclopedia with this type of work. There are a few concerns about going through RfA just at this minute – In your earlier days, people got the impression you used the site like myspace. I think that you need a little longer to shake that off, but I fully respect you have now reformed completely. Another concern is your user rights log, where there was clearly misuse of rollback in the past. Now, this has improved completely and you’re clearly using the tool responsibly, but there would be concerns that not enough time has past from misuse of the minor rollback tool for you to be trusted with more powerful admin tools. If you wanted to go through RfA, I’d suggest waiting about 3 more months and keep doing as you do, maybe adding more content and commenting on more AfD’s. Hope that helps, and if you need anymore advice, you know where to find me! All the best, Ryan Postlethwaite 02:52, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

In fact, I realise you do create new articles and they have been at DYK - just keep that up! Ryan Postlethwaite 02:53, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Oh, thanks Ryan. :) Where should I start... Well, yeah, I haven't been commenting on AfDs recently, I do more closing than commenting these days. I'll try to get to that. And yes, I always point to policy, I also do some Google searching for notability findings. Let' see, yeah, I do a lot of DYK work. And I do create a lot of DYK articles. A list of them can be found at User:RyRy/DYK. Or you can just click the question marks on top of this page. I sometimes expand articles for DYK, rather than creating them. But most of my DYKs are my creations. Yes, I do a lot of vandal fighting and article cleanup. I also clerk at AIV if you didn't notice. Not to mentions some UAA work, but on rare occasions. And your right, in my earlier days, I admit, I did have problems, some being myspace problems and such. I don't think Wikipedia as a myspace anymore, that's behind us. Oh yes, I also do ACC work also if you didn't notice that since you can't see that in my contributions, but only in my logs. And about RfA; I don't really know if I still want to be one on this Wikipedia. I'll most likely become an administrator on another wikipedia in about 2 months from now. Too many users have asked for me to run now, mostly administrators, but I think it's still early. After that, I'll decide if I still want to go for it in a few months. If I do think it's a good time to try one, I would have to find some nominators, which I will have to wait until someone nominates me, but I don't know who, and when that will be. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 03:23, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I give up! - I was just trying to improve references and the article, the Bot told me off for adding a youtube link which I understand but now every time I try and make an improvement it gets reverted by someone accusing me of vandalism. I'll get myself a username for the future. --82.0.172.18 (talk) 08:55, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Welcoming users

Hello, RyRy. Be a little careful when greeting some users, like this one. Users such as these tend to be vandalism-only accounts and blocked immediately. They are also commonly created by User:Grawp. So, I guess when you see a username like that, you should just leave the talk page alone, as no one will really add a block tag or inappropriate username tag if they are created by Grawp. Thanks! SchfiftyThree 22:49, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I didn't welcome the user. I gave him a username warning using {{uw-username}}. It is meant to warn users about their username. I then reported the account to WP:UAA for a block. You probably misunderstood, but this is the normal process of getting bad usernames blocked. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 22:53, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
My mistakes; I thought that was a welcoming template. When I find users like that, I usually don't give them a warning, but I sometimes report them to UAA, if they haven't made any edits. Grawp has become a real serious issue here on Wikipedia. SchfiftyThree 23:01, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I know about Grawp, and how he is an issue here. Anyway, no worries. Yet, another Grawp account has been blocked indef. I won't be surprised if I see another one like that soon. Oh, and good job on the anti-vandalism work. :) -- RyRy (talk) 23:05, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

User:RyRy/Review#Second review. Cheers, « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 07:10, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Personally, you were ready per my standards a while ago. I would say that you are ready per the community's standards, but one never knows about this community. Really it comes down to what you feel. You are the only one that knows if you are truly ready, and I mean truly ready to stand in front of the firing range we call WP:RFA, ready to become an admin, or ready to take a heck of a lot of crap and/or disappointment. And do not nominate yourself. You have enough admins/users, including myself, who would nominate you. Just let us know (I would imagine Useight would nom you). « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 08:10, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
That sounds like a good plan. And don't worry about the long posts, if you want to see some really long posts look at this section on my talk page. Now that is long! :) « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 08:36, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, down the road when you believe you're ready, I wouldn't mind writing up a nom or co-nom. Useight (talk) 20:30, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Review

Going back through your last 250 edits:

I didn't have a chance to go through your most recent 10 edits, but here's what I've seen. If you have questions, feel free to contact me. Malinaccier (talk) 22:29, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh, thanks for the review. Let's see...
  • This I have no clue how it appears in random places at random times. I think it might be a monobook problem since I have Lupin's popups installed.
  • Well, before the article wad deleted, the article didn't show context, thus meeting WP:CSD#A1. It also was nonsense per WP:CSD#G1 as it was badly written, and it was encyclopedic.
  • I know, but I don't really want to use rollback all the time. I sometimes undo.
  • Yeah, sometimes I just undo without any reason. I'll improve on that.
  • Okay. Will do.
  • The article was about an athlete but wasn't notable. For example, people who play a sport professionally meet WP:ATHLETE. Most do not if they didn't play professionally.
  • Alright. I'll be more thorough in my !votes.
  • Okay
  • Yeah, sometimes I don't mark edits as minor. I didn't think it was a big deal. I'll be more careful with that
Anyway, thank you for the review. I'll try to improve in these areas. But you seem to have only shown me negatives. Could you just sum up the positives of my edits? Thanks, RyRy (talk) 22:45, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Alright, here are some +++'s:
  • You have high quality anti-vandal reverts.
  • No Myspace edits except for one userpage redesign.
  • Your edits span a number of areas including AFD.
  • You make edits in the mainspace, and realize there is more to Wikipedia than vandal-fighting.
  • I saw no incivility whatsoever.
  • Your requests for reviews show that you want to improve your work on WPedia.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask! Malinaccier (talk) 00:51, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Admin Coaching

Hi Ry2,

I just took a long hard look at your edits, and do not think you would be a good candidate for admin coaching. IMHO, Admin Coaching is for the person who is capable of being an admin, but needs some help navigating and learning the ropes. It is for the person who isn't quite there yet. You, are there. You've made some mistakes, namely the one's you pointed out on my talk page, but nothing that will kill you in the future (just keep the roll backs clean for 2+ more months.) You already do most of what I would advise you to do: 1) You are active in a number of adminly areas---I love it when people work at the help desk. 2) You act like an admin and people come to you seeking your help/advise. 3) You have diverse interest and a broad foot print in several areas. 4) You've acknowledged and made amends for your errors. You have articles that you've worked on, I would suggest working to develop some more beyond the DYK phase---is Baseball targetting any articles for improvement? If it wasn't for the roll back issues being so recent, I would have considered writing up an RfA you right now (The only thing I didn't look at too closely was CSD's, but they look ok.)--- The other thing that I think might hurt you is that you appear to have been involved with the Award Center. While I'm all in favor or recognizing others for their contributions and love the idea of barnstars, I firmly opposed the Award center. It recognized quantity not quality of work. My impression of people who went there seeking barnstars is not that high. Your one saving grace in this area, is that I actually saw somebody asking about giving you a barnstar, and you told him not to. PArt of the reason why I wouldn't recommend it for you, is because it would be seen as Gaming the System. I'm a huge advocate of Admin Coaching, but I think it is incumbent upon coaches not to accept candidates who don't need coaching... when they do, it looks as if the coaching is in place to game the system to "polish" the candidate. You, IMHO, fall into that category. If you were to be coached, it wouldn't be because you have a glaring need/weakness. Of course, you may see an area of need that I'm missing... why do you want coaching? What would you hope to gain from it?---Balloonman PoppaBalloon 05:13, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, I don't know where to start with. But everything what you say about me is true--I have participated in the Award Center. But I did quit my involvement in it, nearly two months before it's deletion. As to your answer to your question, the reason why I would like coaching, is basically to learn more about the ropes, and what administrators have to do, and how to do it correctly. I also wanted help to improve my adminly areas, but now I see your "Polishing" point. But overall, I would like coaching to see what I am heading for in adminship, weather it is the RfA process, or what to do when I'm actually an administrator on the English Wikipedia. As a side reason I am wanting coaching, I would like to improve in my adminly areas. But I have one question I am rather confused with--You said "It is for the person who isn't quite there yet. You, are there." By "you are there", are you saying I am that person "who is capable of being an admin, but needs some help navigating and learning the ropes"? Or are you saying, I am there, as in I am capable of being an admin, and I do not need help in navigating and learning the ropes? One other question--Are you saying I do not need coaching? Or are you saying that I am not ready to be coached yet? -- RyRy (talk) 07:30, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
You already are an admin, the title just hasn't been officially conferred yet... if it wasn't for the RollBack issues, you would probably be able to get the title "officially." I'm saying that you don't need coaching in any formal coaching. For a person such as yourself, asking for other people's input/opinion and paying attention is the best way to go. If you were to go through coaching, I think it would actually hurt you.---Balloonman PoppaBalloon 13:47, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Very well said Balloonman. I understand. I'll keep doing what I'm doing, and I'll wait a few months before I'll try an RfA. I already know 1, maybe 2 administrators willing to nominate me in a few months. I hope you'll be there Balloonman. :) Thanks you very much. -- RyRy (talk) 14:22, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
In about two months, I would be willing to take a closer look at you again and possibly nom you if you are interested... the biggest thing you need to do is pay attention to review the rollback rules and make sure you don't have those right revoked again. 3-4+ months without incident would probably be enough to show that you've learned. The longer you wait, and you seem to be patient, the more people are comfortable people will be that you've learned. Something you might want to do, is take a look at "New Admin School" or some coaching pages of others... if you see a question or issue on one of those pages your don't understand/disagree with, you can ask the coach about it. A lot of time, the answers are perspectives... I might have a different perspective than another person---and neither of us may be right!---Balloonman PoppaBalloon 14:27, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Will do. Thanks for the advice. Actually, I did read some courses in New Admin School nearly a month ago. I even did some rollback tests there too. Well anyway, I'll do my best not to be revoked with rollback again. But I have a feeling that I will be waiting more than a mer 2 months before I ask. I was thinking a few months longer than that. Like you said, the longer you wait, the better the community feels more comfortable with a candidate because of their experience. Well, again, thank you very much for all this. I very much appreciate it. :) -- RyRy (talk) 14:40, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
