DYK hook

Could you review the DYK hook for Canadian Pacific Airlines Flight 21? It was placed under July 29, but it was created on July 25 and expanded over a couple of days. Where is the correct placement for it? --maclean 05:08, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Done.[1] The date the hook was created or expanded, is the date you put the hook under. The hook has been approved by me, and you just have to wait a few days before you receive the DYK. Thanks for asking! :) Best, RyRy (talk) 05:37, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Good news

Dear friend:
As for today, the list of BoSox all-timers is complete and updated. Finally, I finished my work on this page I created, writing at least a brief stub for every player. So, no more red links. Period. Keep up the good work! Cheers. MusiCitizen (talk) 15:12, 30 July 2008 (UTC).

New section

Ryan, I've of course seen you around the Wiki. Most notably, I've seen the fantastic work you've done in getting newer major league baseball players added to DYK, and therefore, added to Wikipedia. You have not gone unnoticed! I'm sorry that your talkpage has been quiet, but please be reassured that most editors only comment on talkpages when they have a problem with something or another. The fact that yours is "quiet" means that you are doing an excellent job! I'm very glad you are a Wikipedian, I have your talkpage watchlisted, and I'm rather proud every time I see it updated with a new DYK from you. You should be proud of yourself, you are an excellent editor! I probably will never do a "formal" editor review on your editor review page, but please know that I will always be watching your page. I will also be quick (and happy!) to defend your contributions against anyone that thinks you are not here for the right reasons. Keep up the good work, and please feel free to ping my talkpage anytime you need anything from an admin! Cheers, (in a non-alcoholic sense), Keeper ǀ 76 23:59, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Very well said Keeper. :) Yeah, my talk page has been quiet, and yup, I know it's because I'm doing great and fine on my own. No more complaints everyday like I used too... remember, a few months back? DYK is certainly one of my best areas on Wikipedia, not just creating them, but reviewing suggestions, getting hooks ready for the next update for the main page and such. I'm glad I stayed at Wikipedia, even when I was hit many times with complaints long before now. Oh, and how long have you had my page watch listed? :P Just wondering. Hm, I feel like writing another DYK while I wait for your response, which will hopefully be one of those responses that amaze people. :) -- RyRy (talk) 00:31, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Heh. I've had your talkpage watchlisted since the first time I told you that you were "worthless", (probably when you were applying for rollback, or closing NACs or something). I'm so very glad I was wrong about you, and I'm so very glad that you've stuck around and have found a niche to fill, namely, improving articles about "newer" baseball major league-ers. I'm a huge baseball fan (woot! My twins just won the first two games against the WSox ini a 4 game series...Woot!). You've had your "issues" in the past, but you are a perserverer. You don't give up! I'm very glad to be associated with you, I'm glad you are a Wikipedian, and I'm proud to say I've been able to "chat" with you along the way. Keep up the excellent work! Keeper ǀ 76 00:35, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
That was quick. :P And you do know I do non-admin closures still up to today, right? I've noticed you around AfD. Heh, well, thanks for visiting my newly designed talk page and user page and saying all that about me. :) Nice to know you have my page watch listed... though, you never comment. :P Hopefully, that'll change from what you said. ;) -- RyRy (talk) 00:43, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm rather busy, both on-wiki and IRL. I have no plans of "unwatchlisting" your page. I probably won't ever comment on your talkpage specifically, unless I see someone attacking you and I happen to be online. Other than that, feel free to use my talkpage to get wider attention.. Cheers, good editor, Keeper ǀ 76 00:48, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi SRS. I would love to, but I might have to turn this one down for now. I'm taking my bit of vacation redesigning user pages for a while. Want a new challenge?

Feel free to say "no", but my beloved Twins recently called up a new player from the minor leagues, namely Randy Ruiz. He worked his butt off in the minors for years, and finally got his chance at the majors over this last weekend. I would love to see him on the main page, and I thought, "who do I know that is excellent at expanding baseball articles?...RyRy!" If you're up to it, take a look at the article, and a look around google, and expand the article 5x for me? I'll be forever grateful if you're willing to do the legwork to get a DYK out of the Ruiz article. If not, no biggie, I'll get over it. Keeper ǀ 76 21:36, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm still waiting for an incoming DYK at the moment, so I do need an article to work on. Yesterday, I was looking at some baseball-related articles that weren't created yet at WP:REQUEST, and I looked through Google for all of them but couldn't find anything interesting to be used as a good hook. But I think I can work on this player. I'll be glad to work on Randy Ruiz. I'll do my very best, Keeper. Feel free to pitch in if you can. I'm sure you'll know a thing or two about this guy. -- RyRy (talk) 23:39, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
I would love your help! The only thing I know about the guy, I already added, which was that he made his ML debut last Friday. To give you "an out", I haven't tried to search for anything on google, etc, and there may not be much more there. But maybe there is, I'll leave it to you to find out! Thanks for your willingness to help -- Keeper ǀ 76 23:45, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
While I'm thinking of it, if there is a better (free) picture out there (besides the ridiculous pink one), I sure would appreciate it. But that's a minor beef....Keeper ǀ 76 00:17, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Heh, to tell you the truth, I am the worst person you can possibly ask about images. The only thing I know about images is how you add it to a page and finding an image on commons. I cannot tell if an image is free, non-free, copyrighted, ect. I'll be sure to check commons for more if there are any. -- RyRy (talk) 00:22, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
No worries about the image (I suck at them too, I've never uploaded one to my knowledge). Any help you can offer to the Ruiz article is much appreciated, don't worry about the pic. And if it never makes it to DYK, no worries either, I'll repeat. I have no idea what's out there as far as "sources" go, there might be nothing. Thanks for your help - Keeper ǀ 76 00:24, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Heh, I've never uploaded an image either. There seems to be only one image of Ruiz at the moment. Anyway, I'll do my best with the article. I know this article will appear on the main page. You have my utmost trust. I know it's no big deal if it doesn't make it, but I'll make sure it appears on the main page anyway. -- RyRy (talk) 00:33, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
You have no idea how cool I think you are right now. Just sayin. Keeper ǀ 76 20:38, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh, and why is that? :P By the way, Randy Ruiz is about to appear on the main page. It's already loaded at the next update. :-) -- RyRy (talk) 20:43, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

How to implement show/hide features

From how you coded your user page, it can be quite painstaking to convert. Please remember that Wikipedia is not your blog or web space. As reluctant as I am, here is the code:

<div class="NavFrame" id="featured" style="<!-- Style around the header and contents, if you want to default hide add: display:none; -->">
<div class="NavHead" style="<!-- style of header -->">
<!-- Header -->
</div>
<div class="NavContent" align=left style="<!-- Sytle of contents -->">
<!-- Contents -->

Need immediate assistance

I don't know how, but another user appears to be editing as George.Saliba. This was my user name before I did a change name request... I have no idea how the imposter could have taken over the name. ← George [talk] 12:22, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. I don't know what I can do about it, but I think we should bring this to WP:RFCU. If it's proven that George.Saliba and you are different people, that account will probably be blocked. Do you want me to do that? Thanks, RyRy (talk) 12:29, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Please do so ASAP. The user editing under that account will have an IP address in the range 72.42.*.*. Note that they are reverting my edits - they have a personal vendettta against me. You can view the history of the User:George.Saliba account to see when I usurped my present name. I urge any and all edits under the name George.Saliba be undone, and the account disabled. ← George [talk] 12:32, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Try making a post at WP:ANI, with a link showing where you changed your username. That should get you quick results. --Enric Naval (talk) 12:39, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
But I think I should open a RCHU also. I'm almost done with it. Should I continue on with the RFCU case, or should we bring everything to AN/I? Or even both? -- RyRy (talk) 12:42, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Open a RFCU anyways, and then complain at ANI about how, once you change your username, the old username shouldn't be available for registration to prevent impersonation and drama. --Enric Naval (talk) 12:45, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
I filed an ANI, and the account George.Saliba was blocked, which is fine. I'm just not sure what loophole allowed the malicious user to access my old account. Unfortunately the malicious user is on a rotating IP, at 77.42.*.*, so I'm not sure if anyone will be willing to site ban the whole range just for one user committing heavy vandalism and sock puppetry. ← George [talk] 12:47, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
This guy simply registered a new account under your old name, see his logs [2]. Turns out that, once you move to a new username, the old one is available for registration by anyone.
At this point, the next step would be going to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) and ask that the old usernames are made automatically unavailable for registration. --Enric Naval (talk) 12:59, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
I made a post at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#impersonation_using_old_usernames_after_a_username_change. --Enric Naval (talk) 13:06, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Sorry to "bust" in here, but checkuser would be useless. When a username is changed from "XX" to "YY" - "XX" is now available for use to anyone else who wants to create/use it. That's the reason its recommended that you recreate your previous username after it had been changed to a new one. « Milk's Favorite Cøøkie » 15:22, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
That's the reason why I didn't request for check user... I found out George didn't recreate his old account to prevent impersonation, making the account able to be created by anyone. For example: I used to be named "RyRy5", but I moved to this account, RyRy, and recreated the RyRy5 account to prevent anyone from impersonating me and creating and using that account. Most users recreate the account they used to edit over, so I assumed that George did the same, but he didn't. If he did recreate that account and it started vandalizing, a RFCU would have been appropriate since George might have been sock puppeting, so we would have needed a check user to prove if he was really sock puppeting or not. If he did recreate the account, and a check user checked him, and if the IPs matched, they both would have been blocked because George really was sock puppeting. If not, the George.Saliba account would have been found compromised and that account would have been blocked instead. But in this situation, the account was recreated by someone else other than George, so it couldn't have been compromised. That settles that, the user is blocked, now lets move on with our lives. Hey Ryan, I will be back from my short-term wikibreak on Thursday. Once I get back I was planning on re-designing my userpage, a.k.a., stealing your design. I'd just like to ask your permission first. I'd like to change some colors and play around with it some, but overall, may I use your design. Cheers and happy editing, -- iMatthew T.C. 19:49, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Sure, positively. You have my permission. Just be sure to add somewhere that the design was created by me, just so people won't get confused thinking you were the creator. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 19:56, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Absoultely. I will most likely create a new box at the bottom right that says, "This userpage has been modified by iMatthew after it's original design was created by RyRy." -- iMatthew T.C. 19:59, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Eh, sure, I'l go with that. :) -- RyRy (talk) 20:01, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Whadda you think? -- iMatthew T.C. 17:43, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Heh, it looks great! A lot of it ha same features as mine does. :) Your talk page looks... askew. :P It looks way different from your user page. -- RyRy (talk) 17:55, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Absoultely, maybe tomorrow I will fix it. I've been away and have very limited computer access. -- iMatthew T.C. 00:09, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Adminship

Just curious, but why aren't you an admin? Your userpage says you'd like to be one, you've never been up at RfA, and your history and experience are solid. It seems like a no-brainer. I mean, if you need a nominator, I can bug someone to do it, or do it myself! Just throwing it out there. Mr. IP Defender of Open Editing 01:05, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Why aren't I an administrator? That's something I am not able to answer. Questions such as, why haven't I promoted baseball uniform to GA yet? Why haven't I expanded Dick Woodson and Wes Fisler yet for a chance at WP:DYK? The answer? I'm working on them. I'm working on building and expanding the encyclopedia. Administratorship is something I'm not yet going to uphold. Yes, I would be able to improve Wikipedia's technical side, but Wikipedia itself, is what I think is much, much more important then becoming a Wikipedia administrator. I'm flattered that you think I should be an administrator, but before that, I want to build the encyclopedia as best as I can. When I feel I want to help the encyclopedia run smoothly in its technical side, weather its deleting unneeded pages, protecting pages from high amounts of disruptive editing, blocking vandals or users who have been disruptive, ect, while expanding the encylopedia along with it, then and there is when I would like to become an administrator. That time, has not come for me yet. I would like to focus more on articles and some administrative areas (WP:AIV, WP:XFD (more specifically WP:AFD), T:DYK, ect) as a non-administrator before adminship. Best, RyRy (talk) 02:53, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good to me; I just stumbled across your page and got curious. When the time comes, I'll be backing you. Cheers, Mr. IP Defender of Open Editing 04:57, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Nice to hear that. :) I'll do my very best until then. Take care, RyRy (talk) 05:39, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I'll be sure to support you as well. You've contributed a lot to Wikipedia, both on EN and on Simple. (this is TBC from Simple, btw) --T B C ♣§♠ (aka Tree Biting Conspiracy) 05:03, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Heh, thank you to you both. And yeah, I know you are TBC from simple. By the way, you have email. ^_^ -- RyRy (talk) 05:22, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Need help

Hello - new here. My user page and views are all askew. I tried to edit my preferences - specifically my skin - but it does not allow me. Any idea how I can get my views of wikipedia to go back to some semblence of normal?

Kristinafh 05:52, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello there. I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to when you say "views of wikipedia to go back to some semblence of normal". Maybe logging logging out and lgging back in again might help? If your saying you want to change what is on your user page, you can edit the page by clicking here or by clicking "edit this page" on top of your user page. If not, it would be best asking at the Wikipedia:Help desk. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 06:02, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

"Sandbox"

Hey, just after your opinion, in the UK everyone calls sandboxes "sandpits" and sandpit goes straight there with no warning, perhaps a filter page to separate the other possibilities - typing sandbox produces one but in the UK sandpit is used more often than sandbox. Otherwise no worries, I mean I know now, but I'm just worried about others making the same mistake, or maybe I'm just very silly!--163.166.135.44 (talk) 09:28, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Heh, well just remember that here at Wikipedia, the place to test edits is called the "sandbox", not "sandpit". ;) Thanks! -- RyRy (talk) 09:32, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Does this mean people don't actually read the friendly templates directing them to the sandbox that we plaster all over their talk pages :) THEN WHO WAS PHONE? (talk) 10:32, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I doubt it, some people just like to be annoying. Cheers, Face 10:38, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Lol, WP:SANDPIT did not exist (while Wikipedia:Sandpit does), so I created it. I've also posted about this here. Your comments about this terrible dilemma are appreciated. Cheers, Face 10:38, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
( 2 e/c) Heh, if they get a very friendly warning pointing out where to test, it's either they vandalize all over the place and get more friendly warning templates, or they go to the sandbox. But here, he went to the sandpit. :P Heh, I can see what went wrong... what's the difference between a sandbox and a sandpit anyway? :) -- RyRy (talk) 10:42, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
The difference is the same as the difference between a see-saw and a teeter-totter. Useight (talk) 18:18, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Heh, they're just two names, nothing's different. Yeah, Face, I think making WP:SANDPIT was a good and bold move. People would get confused between the two, especially people from the UK. Just in case, I'll start watch listing sandpit. :P -- RyRy (talk) 18:26, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Steve Crossin

I assume you saw that he retired? He left you a note on his userpage. Useight (talk) 00:05, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

protection

Hi, I had the question about protection. I've very new to wiki, so sorry if I mess something up. My aim was honestly to protect the page after I made it. It's not protected right now. I just noticed that a lot of city articles were protected and thought that it may be a special perk. Is this acceptable or is protection strictly for vandalized articles? Thanks again. ----Aug 12 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Klutch130 (talkcontribs) 08:06, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Generally, yes. I basically said it all in my reply to you at the Wikipedia:Help desk, but I'll get into more detail. Not just any page can be protected. In most cases, highly vandalized pages in a short period of time are protected. If an article is protected and it hasn't been vandalized at all basically, it will actually be of no use. What if an editor wants to edit an article that is fully protected, but it was fully protected for no reason? They can't. Every edit helps the encyclopedia, but if an editor wants to improve it, and they can't because a page was protected for no reason, it would be the encyclopedia's lost, and we wouldn't want that. But if an article has been vandalized multiple times in a short period, it can be protected. This is done to safeguard the article from vandals who want to hurt the encyclopedia, and we wouldn't want that either. If someone wants to read an article and there is vandalism within it, they probably won't read it and will just leave, or they may even just learn something that isn't true. So we protect articles if there are threats to readers for them to read misinformation. We write the encyclopedia for others, and protection of articles is a way for readers will be able to read an artice without vandalism in it so they can gain the knowledge we write for them that isn't false. We wouldn't want to let them read misinformation or just plain nonsense. I bet your thinking now, "what about the editor who wants to improve the article, but he can't because it is protected from vandalism?" Now that's a hard question. The only thing that the editor would have to do is wait until the protection expires, or even request an unprotection if the vandals have "left". In this case, there is an actual reason to protect an article. Either way, we're either safeguarding or improving the encyclopedia is all, and you can help! -- RyRy (talk) 09:01, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Art Stewart

Updated DYK query On 12 August, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Art Stewart, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Thanks! Another one to my collection. :) -- RyRy (talk) 09:01, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Userpage design

You might want to know that it doesn't work well on higher resolutions. Perhaps make it autoadjust for width?  Asenine  14:12, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm not sure how to do that, but do you mind if you try it yourself? I have other things to worry about then making my user page look nice (wink, wink). I'd like it if you tried to fix it. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 20:50, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
I'll have a crack tomorrow. :)  Asenine  21:11, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Heh, alright, thanks for helping. :) Best, RyRy Public (talk) 21:13, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Fixed version copied to your main page. :)  Asenine  21:47, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh, thanks. I think it looks fixed now. Thanks for your help, J.delanoy and Asenine. :) -- RyRy Public (talk) 21:51, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
We aim to please. And occasionally edit.  Asenine  21:52, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Heh. Well keep it up. :) -- RyRy Public (talk) 21:54, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

your userpage

Hey RyRy. I love your userpage, but it looks weird on my screen. Can you try using percentage values for the widths rather than than pixel values? J.delanoygabsadds 19:29, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Delanoy. I'm not sure if I can fix that myself (even if I do design user pages XD). Could you give a whack at it and try to fix it yourself? That'll be greatly appreciated. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 20:50, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
OK, it looks good on my screen now. Does it still look good on yours? J.delanoygabsadds 21:29, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Heh, just an FYI, I'm not using User:RyRy/U anymore. I decided to "subst" it onto my user page so that it dumps everything from User:RyRy/U. But since it's not transcluding onto my user page anymore, your going to have to edit my user page itself. ;) And yeah, it looks fine. Thanks! -- RyRy Public (talk) 21:38, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

With regard to the aricle on "Mufti Bahauddin Farooqi"

Dear RyRy:

What have you done to my article? Why does it not appear on google anymore? I have included all the necessary citations for each and every single argument, so I don't understand what exactly prompted you to hide it on google. Please explain.

Thanks, Nomaan —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mnomy88 (talkcontribs) 20:36, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Okay, 1) I never even edited the article if you look at it's history, so saying "what have you done to my article" doesn't make sense. 2) I'm not a Google operator. I don't control what appears and doesn't appear on Google searches. I would assume that it would be on Google if you be patient and wait, but until then, I can't do much to help. May I suggest the Wikipedia:Help desk to your liking? You can ask questions there. You may be able to get some better answers if you ask the community a question at the help desk. Best, RyRy (talk) 20:50, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, dude. I didn't mean to accuse you. The reason I raised this with you is because when i searched the article on google, it would lead me to your user-page, which led me to think that you had made some changes. But, to be sure, the article did appear on google until 2 hours ago. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mnomy88 (talkcontribs) 21:02, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh, no worries. I can see where you would have thought that. So anyway, just wait a while and it should be there sometime soon. Not sure when when. If you need more answers perhaps someone can help you if you ask at the Wikipedia:Help desk like I suggested before. Good luck! Best, RyRy Public (talk) 21:06, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Apologies

Sorry Ryan, I haven't been able to review you fully yet. I've been a bit busy, but will endeavour to have reviewed you by Sunday at the latest. Regards, EJF (talk) 11:31, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

No problem. Do take your time, there's positively no rush in a review. I understand making a proper review takes time, and I believe your someone who does not rush with things like this. Take as long as you need to. :-) Regards, RyRy (talk) 11:33, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Regarding your userpage design offers.

Hello there, as the title says, I am just asking about your design offers. If you take a look, my page is dull, boring and generally un-exciting. Therefore I'd like to request for your help in making it better! I'm sure that you have other people on your list before me, but if you can get back to me so we can finalise this that would be great! Looking at the job you did on Realist's page and seeing as he recommended you, I couldn't resist the urge! A ProdigyTalk 20:07, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Sure, I'll take you on your offer. :-) But I'll be busy for a bit. I've decided to make the 2,500,000th article to DYK status. Anyway, sure, I'll put you on my list. I'm assuming you would like Realist's design? -- RyRy (talk) 20:09, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm not sure how Realist would react if I had a page exactly like him, but something along those lines would be perfect! If you'd like to contact me when your ready to start, that would be great :-) A ProdigyTalk 20:12, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
I'll be sure to do so, and I'm sure Realist won't mind. I did it to User:Xp54321 also, and he never complained. -- RyRy (talk) 20:14, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Blah, doesn't bother me, as long as we aren't accused of being sock puppets ;-) — Realist2 20:22, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: Joe Connor

Hopefully it'll be on the main page, appears to be deserving. I was worried it wouldn't be able to get up to 1500 characters but looks like that wasn't a problem. Wizardman 22:44, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
