Cites for origins

I certainly agree that WP:V is a foundational principle of Wikipedia, and articles are indeed "standalone". However, I think that -- in the absence of a legitimate controversy -- it is unnecessary to footnote each member of a list of people from Kos, especially well-known ones like Hippocrates. Do you also want to include footnotes for every image in the image mosaic in Americans? --Macrakis (talk) 18:24, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

I'll pass on photomontages! The footnotes would really be a mess among the "File" templates. I don't have a good answer. On the other hand, these are well-known Americans, to Americans and the developed World. Some of them may not be that well-known in the undeveloped world.
My primary concern has been place articles where most editors consider lists of athletes, musicians, etc. a unavoidable nuisance having little to do with the place. i.e. non-WP:TOPIC. Not wanting to swim against the tide, the lists have been usually allowed. But forcing place-maintainers to link to each article separately, seems torturous. And often, non-productive, as well, since the author of the athletes link did not deem his place of birth or interim home, sufficiently noteworthy to cite. Granted, some of these people are truly famous, like Hippocrates. But until I watched this article, I had no idea he was "from" or lived in, Kos. I don't know for sure, where a lot of famous people were born or lived. For some I could hazard a good guess. I don't know where the following were born or lived (country, but not city): Confucius, Buddha, Simon Bolivar, George Washington (Fairfax? not Williamsburg, right?), Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Henry V (London?), Charlemagne, Tamerlane, the list, you see, is quite long. Perhaps you are better educated! But I need these to justify space in the articles I try to maintain. I hope to enlist your help. Thanks. Student7 (talk) 18:45, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

State ACW templates and related articles Navbox

I recently came across your Georgia in the Civil War template that you made a few years ago. Nice work. A few years before I made one or two of these after seeing them for another state. I had not noticed the Georgia one before because it is unfortunately buried within a related article Navbox. I'm presently going through and systematically stripping away the related article Navbox so that this template displays. If you think that is a mistake, or overriding some group consensus about format, please let me know so that I can bring it up for reconsideration before continuing. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean about "stripping away related article Navbox" in this case. I agree that I like to have small one-topic templates without dragging in ones that "might" be related, but not sure how that applies here. Student7 (talk) 14:50, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
The Navbox surrounding the template was hiding it. The GA ACW template was being grouped with the national ACW template as well, hiding both. They were disappearing at the bottom of the page under a non-descript, black and white, "Links to related articles" strip. I didn't notice it at first as I began inserting the template in pages...then realized that it was already there, but not displaying. I hadn't even noticed that generic "Links to related articles" bar before and would have no reason to select it since the articles typically contain wikilinks, "see also", campaign boxes, etc. The solution seemed simple: strip away the generic box that is hiding the information so that the state and national templates display properly. Not starting a new section, I wanted to thank you for the "Welcome to Wikipedia" message you put on my TALK page. Inaccuracy

Your page Persecution Of Christians is innacurate. Namely, the topics of the Crusades and the Holocaust, for example, are full of fallacies. The Crusaders themselves were actually Christians and cleansed areas of Jews, Pagans, Muslims, and more. The campaign was called for by the Pope himself. Also, did you know that the Swastika is the symbol of the third entity of the Trinity, the Holy Ghost? These are actually excellent examples of the harm religious fundamentalism causes, in nearly every religion devised by man, and spills that harm over into politics, which is why seperation of church and state is one of the best things the American founding fathers ever passed, and the religious folks in the States who bellyache about it should bite their tongues. You are correct. My keyboard slipped as I was explaining change. Navigational templates are not used without being able to navigate to the current template. Recent edit of NYC history

I have re-added the titanic info. Though it sank in the Atlantic, the ship was heading to New York, survivors were brought to New York, and much of the aid came from New York. I don't agree. The event was made into a popular film. The presence here seems to play off the film. We don't even report nearby events. We don't report 9/11 in Jersey City, though the fire could be seen from there.
The aid provided by NYC was eleemosynary only. WP:MILL. It should be rm entirely. NYC soup kitchens provided as much aid daily to the needy then as it did to the survivors. Student7 (talk) 16:28, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Florida A&M Hazing & Graduation Rate

I want it deleted because hundreds of universities have gone through national recognized hazing incidents (there's multiple hazing deaths every year) and it's not on their wiki page and besides the hazing incident is properly placed in the band section. It doesn't belong on the main page. In light of fair wiki practices, if those universities don't have it on their page it shouldn't be on FAMU.

Graduation rates has nothing to do with the history of the university. It doesn't belong there. You guys got to be freaking kidding me, how many times do I need to state that. Once again, no other university has a graduation rate in their history.Broadmoor (talk) 01:05, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Not too sure what you mean by "understand my motives and agree with them." Let's take the easy one first.
There are WP:SCAREQUOTES around the word "native." The unit was either native or it wasn't. There is no reason to call attention to the word by inserting quotes around it per Wikipedia's Manual of Style.
The second part: is it worth distracting the reader from the Rebellion by telling someone interested in history the details of a weapon that was used? This seems WP:TRIVIA to this article, while it may be important in the article about the weapon itself. Telling the reader that there were significant differences in weapon capability, is important, but the details are best left elsewhere for those interested primarily in weaponry and not in history. (It's sort of like telling a reader that John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln with a revolver. Then describing the revolver in detail, which detracts from Wilkes jumping on the stage, shouting something and galloping off into the night. And it being part of a general plot. Hello, Student7! I've noticed your recent edits to Kuşadası, and I appreciate them very much. Thank you. However, I have also noticed that you are tagging a lot of unreferenced statements that were already there before with lots of citation needed tags just recently. I am not in anyway criticizing this; in fact, I welcome this. It allows us to contribute more to the article and increase its quality. However, I was wondering what brought your attention to this article in the first place, as it never seemed to be within your areas of interest! If it was my edits that brought it to your attention, I simply want to let you know that I was merely polishing what was already there, and I didn't add these statements myself. I know not to make any big statements without supporting them, even though I am a newcomer.

Other than that though, I sincerely thank you. No major changes have been made to this article in such a long time, and yet it is a very important topic. It's self-evident that the "University of Tizi-Ouzou" is inside the city of the same name. Ask yourself: Is the average person going to demand a citation for something that is apparently common sense? I don't think so. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:54, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

User:WhisperToMe. First of all, I might have been a bit more careful had I known it was you when I made the change!
"But secondly, Wikipedia is not "self-proving" as WP:CIRCULAR attests. I don't even know if such a university exists or ever existed. WP:RS are, or should be, required everywhere. It may be true if we read it in the Times, but not at all obvious if we read it in Wikipedia. Student7 (talk) 19:03, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
Ah, don't worry so much about me! I'm just an editor.
I am aware that Wikipedia isn't self-proving and I personally don't like it when people have articles cite other articles. The rationale I'm referring to isn't that "Wikipedia is proving itself" but rather "it's unlikely someone will challenge that fact." Perhaps few Westerners have heard of this university, but I don't think in general readers will think such information is out of place. Wikipedia:Verifiability#Responsibility_for_providing_citations refers to info that is challenged or is likely to be challenged.
Now, I will say that I cite 90-95% of what I write, because very little is "common sense" to the reader. A few times I leave out citations to some basic facts (Usually along the lines of "Anytown school district serves Anytown city, Anystate, USA") that I believe are highly unlikely to be challenged. Citations more or less do belong anywhere, but I meant to say that sometimes it's unlikely a reader will demand them in certain circumstances.
What could be done: A more "obscure fact" about the university, maybe how many students it has or many departments it has or something could be added to that paragraph, and the citation goes after that. Also if it's in a particular neighborhood/district of the city, I cite the contact page with the street address quoted. While a city location may be obvious, a district/neighborhood won't be.

I was impressed with the percentage of endowments, pension funds, etc. Not impressed with the source which was Mellon itself. You'd need an unbiased third party, IMO. WSJ? Value Line? S&P? Disclosure Q (or whatever it is)?
Also, the "best place for female technologists" seemed to be stretching things a bit. This is small potatoes for Mellon.

Again, what is the use to the article? Describing the interior, if WP:RS can be found, might be useful. But to say how tough it was to fix thus and so, when the original builders had pretty much the same problem. And tough to replace church roofs. Christmas

This strikes me as a doubious claim: "The early church was concerned with the Death, Resurrection and life of Christ. They essentially ignored the birth of Christ until Docetism asserted that Christ did not have a physical body." Perhaps Bowler is thinking of Paul. But Mark, writing at about the same time, was certainly concerned with the various worldly doings of Jesus, especially the Baptism. Writing a generation later, Luke and Matthew have detailed Nativity narratives. Also, the 336 calendar gives Christmas on December 25, but says nothing about Epiphany. So it might not have been a feast at that time. I don't see any basis to say that Christmas and Epiphany were "split." Epiphany was primarily a holiday to honor the Baptism; It's not Christmas on another day. Thanks for discussing this article. I wasn't completely happy with my edits. Also, there is a lot of differences in sources about the celebration, as I'm sure you have noticed.
The Pope Julius I article, last paragraph, indicates that this pope split off the birth of Jesus into 2 different celebrations, the Nativity (not called "Christmas" in a Latin-speaking country! :) and the Epiphany. I'll try to make the appropriate change.
The concern with Docetism was not over church teaching which seemed consistent to the church, but the ignoring of Christ birth and physical manifestation. So no doubt in church's mind. Doubt is by Docetists only. And yes, it's all there in Luke and Matthew, to say nothing of the portrayal of physical (human) suffering at Christ's death.

The Christmas and Epiphany book is a nice resource, but perhaps you could point out what page supports your claims. We don't know whether or not Epiphany was celebrated in Rome in early fourth century. Even if it was celebrated, it could be viewed as a commemoration of the Baptism or the visit of the magi. In March the Project saw four articles promoted to GA-Class. They were the oh-so-irresistible Delilah (nom. MagicatthemovieS) (pictured), Edict of Torda (nom. Borsoka), David Meade (author) (nom. LovelyGirl7) and last but not least Black Christmas (2006 film) (nom. Drown_Soda). Black Christmas? How did that get in there lol? Congratulations to all of the nominators for a job well done!

Jesus of Nazareth

Jesus (7–2 BC to 30–33 AD) is the central figure of Christianity, whom the teachings of most Christian denominations hold to be the Son of God and the awaited Messiah of the Old Testament. Virtually all modern scholars of antiquity agree that a historical Jesus existed, although there is little agreement on the reliability of the gospel narratives and how closely the biblical Jesus reflects the historical Jesus. Most scholars agree that Jesus was a Jewish preacher from Galilee, was baptized by John the Baptist, and was crucified in Jerusalem on the orders of the Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate. Christians generally believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, performed miracles, founded the Church, died by crucifixion as a sacrifice to achieve atonement, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven, from which he will return. The great majority of Christians worship Jesus as the incarnation of God the Son, the second of three Persons of a Divine Trinity. A few Christian groups reject Trinitarianism, wholly or partly, as non-scriptural. In Islam, Jesus is considered one of God's important prophets and the Messiah. (Full article...)

Last month's auspicious relaunch of our newsletter precipitated something of an uproar in the Wikipedia community. What started as a localized edit war over censorship spilled over onto the Administrator's Noticeboard finally ending up at Wikipedia's supreme judicial body ArbCom. Their ruling resulted in the admonishment of administrator Future Perfect at Sunrise for his involvement in the dispute. The story was reported by Wikipedia's venerable flagship newspaper The Signpost.

The question of whether to delete all portals--including the 27 Christianity-related portals--was put to the Wikipedia community. Approximately 400 editors have participated in the protracted discussion. Going by !votes, Oppose deletion has a distinct majority. The original Christianity Portal was created on November 5, 2005 by Brisvegas and the following year he successfully nominated the portal for Featured Portal. The Transhumanist has revived WikiProject Portals with hopes of revitalizing Wikipedia's system of 1,515 portals.

The reconstructed frame of Nate Saint's plane used in Operation Auca

Operation Auca was an attempt by five Evangelical Christian missionaries from the United States to make contact with the Huaorani people of the rainforest of Ecuador. The Huaorani, also known as the Aucas, were an isolated tribe known for their violence, both against their own people and outsiders who entered their territory. With the intention of being the first Protestants to evangelize the Huaorani, the missionaries began making regular flights over Huaorani settlements in September 1955, dropping gifts. After several months of exchanging gifts, on January 2, 1956, the missionaries established a camp at "Palm Beach", a sandbar along the Curaray River, a few miles from Huaorani settlements. Their efforts culminated on January 8, 1956, when all five—Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, and Roger Youderian—were attacked and speared by a group of Huaorani warriors. The news of their deaths was broadcast around the world, and Life magazine covered the event with a photo essay. The deaths of the men galvanized the missionary effort in the United States, sparking an outpouring of funding for evangelization efforts around the world. Their work is still frequently remembered in evangelical publications, and in 2006, was the subject of the film production End of the Spear. (more...)

The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara

The Mortara case was a controversy precipitated by the Papal States' seizure of Edgardo Mortara, a six-year-old Jewish child, from his family in Bologna, Italy, in 1858. The city's inquisitor, Father Pier Feletti, heard from a servant that she had administered emergency baptism to the boy when he fell sick as an infant, and the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition held that this made the child irrevocably a Catholic. Because the Papal States had forbidden the raising of Christians by members of other faiths, it was ordered that he be taken from his family and brought up by the Church. After visits from the child's father, international protests mounted, but Pope Pius IX would not be moved. The boy grew up as a Catholic with the Pope as a substitute father, trained for the priesthood in Rome until 1870, and was ordained in France three years later. In 1870 the Kingdom of Italy captured Rome during the unification of Italy, ending the pontifical state; opposition across Italy, Europe and the United States over Mortara's treatment may have contributed to its downfall.
