Michele Noonan

Let me go into more specifics. The arguments for keeping her article is that other non-winners have articles, but all the other non-winners who have articles have gone on to do notable things. For example, Chima Simone was a victim of the Bathtub Rapist. Michele has done nothing and did not win her season -- she doesn't meet notability criteria. Her claim to fame since then is creating a fitness supplement? It's called Cellean -- google it. Nobody has heard of it.

The article was written by her fans to promote her -- she is not notable. If you really look at the the credentials cited in her article, they are all obscure and tenuous references aside from Big Brother -- which she didn't win, and traditionally non-winners do not get articles. 67.246.30.214 (talk) 04:46, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Generally, articles lacking in notability can be deleted through speedy/prod/AFD, or they can be redirected if there is a location that should discuss a non-notable entry. AFD is still a venue to discuss redirects, but it's unnecessary for obvious cases. No matter, I'll take the articles through AFD. tedder (talk) 18:07, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

oops- I meant to undo the most recent change, as tedderbot had some bad behavior- look on the diff and you'll see it. I'm modifying how it works to remove the templates used, but when it ran it was clear I had a problem. new article bot link problem

Bot magic for other projects?

Uh, right here I guess. There are ways it can be done without requiring bot assistance, but there are advantages to this style (I just can't remember what they are, honestly). Let me know what templates/categories pick up the entire project and I'll see about coding it (in our case, it's simply Template:WikiProject Oregon plus Category:WikiProject Oregon). Bonus, there's no need for BRFA because it only edits one page outside of articlespace. tedder (talk) 03:40, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Template:WikiProject Cue sports and Template:WikiProject Snooker should both do the trick, since they're generated by the standardized project banner meta-template. Because of the overlap between the projects, the relevant categories are Category:All cue sports pages minus snooker and Category:All snooker pages, respectively. Anyway, it's an awesome idea. I find it increasingly difficult to do meaningful maintenance and anti-vandal work for either project because my personal watchlist is many thousands of items from many, many topics. It's therefore very hard for me to see any kind of patterns, like a noob showing up and making sneaky edits over a few weeks to all Scottish snooker player bios, and things like that. Wait, so are you asking for coverage on two projects? I concatenated the four items together (templates, categories). Should I be generating a list for Cue sports and another one for Snooker? As far as maintenance, once I get it done it'll run daily from my server. Yes, they are two separate projects. Sorry I wasn't clearer! Despite technical and historical overlap, there's near-zero social overlap and very little WP editorial overlap (cf. baseball and cricket, or field hockey and ice hockey). Yep. You know I want to know. What I was hoping, if you recall, is that you could get the bot to filter out the results from the templates, because Aboutmovies had to remove those by hand, which I believe was a PITA. And maybe up the the target number of redlinks from >2 to >3, as 3 seems like a pretty small threshhold to me. Other folks may disagree, and it may also depend on how long the list would be with 3 vs. 4 being the cutoff. If that makes any sense at all. Valfontis (talk) 23:21, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

deletion page refactoring

I don't like inline comments either, but I did one in this case because I thought the alternative was worse. I put the inlined note where I did because it applies specifically to the previous paragraph only, not to the whole posting. Putting the note after the whole posting broke the connection between the note and what it referred to. To clarify that connection, I found I had to belabor what I was trying to say much more than it was worth. I made the choice that I thought would be least problematic. I should also have replicated the signature, one of the techniques suggested in WP:Talk. Others might disagree with my choice, as I disagree with many other choices that writers made on the page. However, that is not the problem. The problem is that no one should be able to make changes on a locked archive merely to express an editorial opinion about which reasonable people might differ. Administration grants power to apply the rules, not power to ignore the rules. If locking is not universally respected, it is really just a serving suggestion, and no debate will never have to end. AlexNewArtBot isn't delivering the right "goods"

In recent weeks, when I peruse the output at AlexNewArtBot/GoodSearchResult to look for possibly DYK nominations, I am not finding the quality content I used to be able to expect. Far too many of the hits are minimal stubs like Sunnyside United Methodist Church (OK, that's an extreme case; Emirates Aluminium is more typical, and I did find the nominatable article Norbert Frýd). Not only are the results filled with articles that could not remotely be called "good", but my own high-quality work (if I do say so myself), such as the recent Potsdam Sandstone, doesn't show up in the list. I don't know when the search criteria changed, nor what aspects changed, but the results lead me to think the criteria need to be reexamined and tweaked. --Orlady (talk) 05:05, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

This search (rules at User:AlexNewArtBot/Good) has traditionally been used for DYK candidates, but most of the articles in the recent "GoodSearchResults" output are ineligible for DYK. I have a hunch that I've figured out one of the problems. For some reason, it seems that the article length parameter is not being used in scoring. Thus, an article with a size of 2000 can reach this list if it has a References section, a Notes section, an EL section, a Gallery, an image, and categories, and uses the {{cite}} template, even though it may have almost no actual prose text, but longer articles that aren't fully burdened with all of those diverse elements (such as my Potsdam Sandstone example) don't make the list because they aren't getting scored the 40, 60 or 75 total points they are supposed to get for lengths over 5000, 7500 or 10000. Do you think you can figure out what's going on -- and restore the length element to the scores? --Orlady (talk) 20:57, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

TedderBot has stopped archiving?

Hello, unless I'm mistaken, TedderBot stopped archiving new article results from late July. Instead older results are just deleted from the respective "logs". Is there a specific reason for this change? I'd like to point to User:TedderBot/NewPageSearch/Sweden/archive, which was last updated on 19 July, and the new results added to User:AlexNewArtBot/SwedenSearchResult from 29 July do not include any "x pages archived" edit summary. Hello, I was considering putting List of Mauritian Musicians up for Deletion, or at least merging because of your edit. I completely understand why you deleted the names, but now I think that article is not needed. I want to know what you think. Bot still working?

On the User_talk:Tedder/Archive_10#Request_for_2_new_article_reports. I created a feed for sociology, but regular expressions are beyond me. Could you help me set up a simple feed per the rules mentioned in the old post in User:AlexNewArtBot/Sociology?  Done. I merged the three words into one search. The \W means "word boundary", so it wouldn't match "resociological" but would match "socialogicaling". Sorry, I had to make up words to explain it . A motorcycle-related article MYMOSA just got speedy deleted despite there being an open AfD discussion. On Oct 3, User:Phauly placed the {{curent}} tag in the WikiSym article which contains information about the current 2011 WikiSym conference Oct 3-5.

I'm confused because, on Oct 4, during the event, TedderBot removed the tag.

Hi- the scores are set up in the searches. For instance, here are the searches for Oregon. There are numbers associated with each word. If you look at the Oregon search log, you can see what points were given to each article. Autoindustrie

Do me a favour and check out the WP:POINT edits made by User:Autoindustrie on some of the bike articles. A second opinion would be useful. NewArt and NewPages

Hi Tedder,

I've got an idea that I'd like to see happen, but I don't know if it's possible, much less how to do it. I'd like to take the results at User:AlexNewArtBot/MedicineSearchResult, and sort of 'merge' them with the results at Special:NewPages. The point of the exercise is to get the "Mark this page as patrolled" link when we visit the page, but to not get the whole list of every single new page created—just the ones that WP:MED might be interested in.

Hi- you can think of AlexNewArtBot as a derivative of Special:NewPages. Hmm. I might be able to do it automatically by adding "&redirect=no&rcid=1" to the page URL, but it would then prompt "mark as patrolled" even on patrolled pages. Any ideas? It appears to work, except that in the current list, nothing apparently needs to be patrolled, and when I manually double-checked the list at Special:NewPages, the first article is still unpatrolled. On the result page, note there is a link called "ruleset version". It shows what version the bot loaded when running. In this case, it was on the previous version. Wikipedia is not a book marketing device

ISBN codes are merely UPC codes for books. They are a selling tool for publishers. Search engines such as WorldCat (or commercial search engines) work off of Author, Title, Publisher, Date, or subject keywords. Wikipedia should not be attempting to be an inferior substitute for WorldCat by using the grossly inferior search metric of ISBN codes.

Why are ISBN codes inferior: 1. Not every book has them, thus skewing searchability to current work away from older work. 2. Every edition of a book has a unique code: hardcover and softcover differ, if it moves to a new publisher, that differs, if a publisher puts out a new edition, that's different. 3. Use of ISBN-UPC numbers clutters Footnotes sections with useless links, making it more difficult to read what needs to be read — the name of the source, publisher detail, and page number.

First, please centralize discussions- in other words, reply where the discussion started. Second, an ISBN may be inferiour, but it's better than the even-more-inferior title of a book. This is a larger conversation than just us- if you think ISBNs shouldn't exist on Wikipedia, you need to discuss it at the proper village pump. Chet Orloff

Ugh. I protected the article for 3 days. I'm not 100% certain that those various editors are sock puppets--they may actually just all be people working for or associated with Orloff. Or, I also wonder if it's not actually Orlofff as claimed, but instead Tramposch and associates, since I see that User:Shednight also tried to remove the info from Oregon Historical Society. While meatpuppetry is equally as bad as sockpuppetry, it's harder to prove with such a limited amount of data. I've put both articles on my watchlist, and will wait and see what happens over the next few days, especially once the protection lifts. In the meantime, though, I am actually concerned that, on the Orloff page at least, that maybe the info shouldn't actually be in the article. Looking at User:AlexNewArtBot/SociologySearchResult, both archive links are dead, and looking at some older articles' what links tos, I would say that the bot is not archiving the results it removes. I see that you have placed a hold on new changes. I am pleased that you have put a stop to relentless deletions of my contributions to the Occidental Petroleum article. I would be willing to make minor changes if those who have automatically wiped out my well-sourced, factual contributions would not use the consensus game of getting one or two allies to pretend there is massive resistance to the article. Yeah Skeleton Cave and your GeoHack edit. I'm interested more in the GeoHack as a reliable source, since really it's nothing more than a link to other sources. It doesn't appear to be an authority on anything, just hearsay. But I'm only basing that on my limited experience with it so far. I did SITB, and it came from that page. It probably depends on the search terms you used; with "skeleton cave gps" it shows me that page. You'll probably have to open a different browser to do it, SITB remembers which pages you've seen. tedder (talk) 03:47, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Tedder - best wishes for 2012! Of the 100 or so primary schools that were suddenly mass proposed for deletion over the holiday period, roughly half are being redirected and half are being deleted, and some are apparently being deleted without properly evaluating the consensus. Not only is it contrary to any effort to adhere to consistency in the way policies, guidelines, or precedents are applied throughout the encyclopedia, but such arbitrary voting and closing by those who are not aware of the policies, guidelines, and precedents, does not accord equal debate to all schools that are proposed for deletion at AfD. I am contacting you because of your expertise in this issue, as exhibited by your taking the lead in filing this RfC: Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Born2cycle. I also hope that by broadening the participation there with you, an admin, you can help to improve the quality of the discussion and to more fully achieve consensus.

I am taking the initiative on this because, though I have had very limited (and only very recently too) interaction with B2C, I only recently discovered that he had driven another admin to quit Wikipedia out of frustration with Wikipedia’s poor processes for dealing with tendentious editors (see User talk:GTBacchus#So sick of this bullshit). As I wrote at this ANI brought by GTBacchus just before he quit the project, One thing GTBaccus was exceedingly correct about is that Wikipedia is utterly broken in its ability to deal with tendentious editors. It’s my intention to use the sandbox and the processes used in the upcoming RFC/U to serve as a paradigm for how we go about dealing with editors like B2C so Wikipedia no longer stays broken in this regard.

Richard Sanders/Portland State Univ

The article on Sanders states, not very plainly or straightforwardly, but states that Sanders attended Portland State. Lots of the other entries in the same heading @ PSU don't have citations. Why is Sanders subject to such scrutiny? The article on Sanders does need citations. If you want to tag it, please do. That Sanders attended Portland State is common knowledge. Is there a cite on the Sanders page? I'm not removing it, just asking for a cite. Generally I try to watch for new entries and ensure they are cited, and backfill entries as I can. Hey, the archives may not be working (I think I broke them last summer) but the bot is certainly running. Here's the result page: User:AlexNewArtBot/DnDSearchResult. Looking at the history, I'm guessing there are zero pages, and an empty result page doesn't get updated. Further confirmation is that DnD is on the master list: User:AlexNewArtBot/Master. I decided to include that information because I went to Mira Costa and the man is universally respected in the school and within the community-at-large. Notability of individuals in an article list is usually handled through WP:NLIST. A shorthand is WP:WTAF. In other words, a "notable" or "distinguished" individual is considered notable because they have an article on Wikipedia. It doesn't sound like this individual qualifies. (talk page stalker) It's nothing to worry about. Tedder runs a bot that helps WikiProjects find new articles. (It's not "his" Canadian highways section, it's a page generated by a project he took over from a departed user with input from WikiProjects for the search parameters.) It's a good bot, but not perfect, so sometimes there are false hits on articles that don't actually have anything to do with the topic areas the bot is programmed to find--in this case, the bot thought maybe the new article had something to do with Canadian highways. It's not hurting anything as far as I can tell, is there some other reason for the concern? (like too many false hits and a need to reprogram the bot?) Valfontis (talk) 19:04, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
No further concerns at all. Sounds like a very handy bot. I just thought I would point it out in case it was an actual issue. The sort order is by the date the page on which the article is linked was created, oldest first. I honestly don't have any idea why it would matter that non-article pages show up there. It's easy enough to filter them out. It's also often helpful to have a record of discussions about an article--probably not in this case as this discussion doesn't actually have to do with the article's content. Anyway, let's not further clutter Ted's page with this, since the initial question was answered. If you have further concerns, there must be a place to discuss "what links here" hits in general. Can't this page be redirected to the Kazzer page, since people looking up this artist just end up hitting a brick wall with no results? That sentence still does not meet the criteria in order to be labeled a disclaimer. Your own post on my talk page only further validates my claim. Is that statement denying anything? No, it is not. If you think that statement is a denial of any kind then I suggest that you seek help so you are better able to determine the appropriate context of terms used in the American version of the English language. Thus, it's not a disclaimer as you ignorantly assumed it was. Ignorant is used in the proper context here as well since to be ignorant of something is to simply lack knowledge of it. How ironic that you all call in your buddies, like your own little clique, to get what you want...just like how a 2 year old throws a temper tantrum. The *civil* way to address this would have been to say there should not be any unlinked text in the external links section. Simple, effective and not using misapplied terms to further your cause. Please see the article guidelines for secondary schools. Roughly, every school has clubs. Listings of clubs aren't terribly helpful unless they are unique- if Gann had a competition chainsaw juggling team that had coverage on ESPN and New York Times, it would certainly be worth mentioning. The same thing applies to student government. Read the article guidelines to give you some ideas. Great information to include would be state championships (not placings, but first place) for sports and clubs or things that have been covered to some degree. tedder (talk) 22:09, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

1992 Riots

Tedder,

The problem was the sudden mention of random, unknown sources of information. The article mentions Park and Rhyu and Hwang and Rhee as if they had been referenced earlier, or as if we should know who they are and thus should place importance on their statements.

In this situation, there was a need to fill in some aspect of who the heck these people were - or we could have just said "Mr. Smith said this, Mrs. Smith said that, and Tedder & JMG38 said something else". I'm sure that Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith, Tedder & JMG38 are nice people - but why are they quoted in the article?!

In the case of Professor Park, the fact that he is head of Asian Studies adds further value to his comments - he's not a Professor of mathematics. I would like to put that part of the reference back in - but I'd like to hear your comments first. I'll look back here on your page for your thoughts.

As per the NYPD pages ... to develop, or allow to develop, both separately.
Obviously I don't refute any of the above pages but I do think the quantity of crime related reporting was imbalanced in comparison to the cultural and historical aspects of the topic. It needs a serious looking at as it is a mish-mash of tenses, e.g. reports of allegations and 'future' undecided court case which have now passed but not been updated, but I have not got the time to do so today.
I don't know the Wikipedia as well as you but if there is not a policy which says, WP:NOT_A_TABLOID_PAPER, then I think we need one. It strikes me that a lot of the reporting in the area is sensationalistic and unnecessarily detailed. Splitting the topic allows those who do wish to continue reporting on the crime angles, or angels, to do so. --Bridge Boy (talk) 20:31, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

School sections in place articles

As you are a Schools' Project member I'd like your advice and view on schools that appear in place articles, often under their own section, being there presumably because they are not that notable in themselves or that nobody has yet got around to writing an article about them. I tend to remove anything that does not concur with general guidelines, but should these sections also fall under school article guidelines (WP:WPSCH/AG) regarding what should be included and how the information is structured within a section ? Hey! Schools don't have to be notable to appear on a locality article. In fact, it's standard operating procedure to redirect "NonNotable Elementary School" to "Placename" and put a section into that article. So the locality ends up being a listing of schools, notable or not. This is a good thing, except in municipalities that are too large to list all schools. Does this help? After a trawl around guidelines and projects, I can't find an answer to my specific problem of being confronted with a large amount of text about a non-notable school as part of a section in a place article, that is almost a mini article in its own right and will often overweight a short place article. I think for now it's a matter of discretion, but I will edit this kind of text broadly in line with WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG, but not with its obvious support, and argue the toss if challenged. Tedderbot, NewArtBot, What Links Here

Multiple questions:

  • User:AlexNewArtBot/TexasSearchResult brings up recent new pages on the Texas project. Is there a search equivalent for WP Women's History? If so, could you provide me with a link to the page?
  • Prior to recent implementation of 1.20wmf1, Tedder Bot or AlexNewArtBot search results relevant to any given article showed up under "What Links Here". Permanently, I thought, because I could go there and check any page. As of today, I find "What Links Here" cleared on all those old search results. It makes for a cleaner list for "What Links Here", but it also erased the history of those searches on a given article. Was this intended? I kind of liked the search evidence there. On every article I've created PRIOR to the implementation, it's gone. On the two articles I created since the implentation, those search results are there. Maile66 (talk) 22:36, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

I have the feeling it's going to be just you and me setting up this bot. I've tried to contact individuals and have not gotten desired results. Since, I know nothing about what search terms would work, you need to help me come up with something. This is what I know about the project:

  • Women's history
  • Individual biographies
  • Organizations
  • Movements and issues
  • Fictional characters can be included
  • Works of art that deal with women
  • Literature that is focused on women

On their main page, they have a lot of "could be, but not necessarily..." things. The editor who set up the main page has not been active for about a year.

Got some advice on the terms

Please look at Viriditas under Proposed Terms. Will that work for you? And can you create the rules for this bot? As for the stub template, I have already created that. Initial terms set up and we are puzzled

We have some tentative rules at User:AlexNewArtBot/WomensHistory, but they are picking up some articles that only seem to match the "historical" rule, and should score 10. What am I missing? Rich Farmbrough, 21:48, 10 May 2012 (UTC).

Hey, it links to the ruleset version on the search result page. The bot thinks it was matching the current ruleset, and looking at the changes, you added "equality", which logged as matching the article of Suze Groeneweg. So what's the problem? tedder (talk) 22:46, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

I understand. I'm a nerd, I totally get it, but I'm horrible at choosing search terms and knowing how to make it work well. Think of the rules page as a keyword search (like google) but uglier. The pipe (vertical, "|") means "or". So this line:
8 /(gender|female|women's) equality/

Those are Rich's search terms, because I drew a blank on the search terms. So, I think maybe Rich is going to have to figure that out. My snag on the search terms is that I haven't been that involved with that project. In a perfect world, somebody involved in structuring that project would come up with something. Yep [{Suze Groenenweg]] is a good match. I looked at , for example Christophe (Amsterdam) which looked like a 10 pointer to me, and set up a small perl program to score it, in case I was missing something. But there are still some things on it that puzzle me: Crawley Development Corporation, Deadliest Warrior video game, The Andy Griffith Show, and Jim Reese (Texas Politician). And I'm wondering what we can use as a search term to pull up pre-20th Century subject matter, if any are being created. Yep, we can strengthen earlier articles the same way the Middle Ages search set does. I think the score for "all female" is already pretty high, it just needs another medium sized hit to be picked up - we don't want every woman who attended an "all female" school, or those teaching at such an institution. I'd rather resolve the false positives before adding rules though. Rich Farmbrough, 18:17, 12 May 2012 (UTC).
So stuff like Crawley we may just have to live with. "Dame Caroline Haslett, educated locally, was a pioneering electrical engineer and writer, and was the British Electricity Authority's first female member." I have set "first female" as automatic inclusion, and for stubs to work I don't think we have any choice. If I were writing from scratch I'd maybe divide the score by log(article length) or something. I'll look at some date weighting now. Rich Farmbrough, 18:23, 12 May 2012 (UTC).

Hi! The score has to do with how the pages were decided to match those projects. Let's look at Ireland. Cydnie Hunter-McCullough has 64 points, based on these keywords and points. You can look at the "error log" which shows match points. That article matched many things- "ireland", "irish", "ulster", "belfast", and points were taken for matching "british". tedder (talk) 23:11, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Yes, I operate it. You can see the rules that gave those results, and the log will tell you how the points got assigned to specific articles. Looks like Rich Farmbrough isn't around today. Based on what the Newsroom at The Signpost has for tonite's post, I don't know his status. Meanwhile, can you read my note, here: User talk:AlexNewArtBot/WomensHistory, and make some coding adjustments so we don't get such a huge amount of results before Tedderbot runs tonite? Not knowing coding, I don't know what the current configuation does. But it would be nice to have the results be about women. Anyway, if you can, just wait and see if Rich surfaces tonight. Replied on the talk page. Basically, you should be able to read the "rules" and think of them as search terms. They are in a complicated format, but.. look through the "errors" page and the "rules" page and you can probably tune the keywords. Yeah, I can lower the points. The reason it got "10" is because it was "5" twice. Lowering it will help, but it really needs more keywords. Look at some of the other rules to get an idea of that. tedder (talk) 23:39, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I know. And you've been wonderful about this. So has Rich. I had actually given up hope of having this when Rich showed up in his Mighty Mouse cape and volunteered to take care of this. Now, understandably, Rich has a bigger priority of his own. He has a notice on his talk page that he's not available. I look at what Rich did, and I don't see what you do because I'm not experienced at that kind of thing. To me, it's just a bunch of numbers and dashes and whatnots. Rich might have added the keywords, if today hadn't gone the way it did for him. The question is, how much would all those extra keywords clog up the bot if all those search terms were in there? Those extra keywords will probably help. I'll make you a deal- you add it, I'll fix it, and we'll both be happy. Here's the super-basic example:

Now you're dipping your toe into Regular expression theory . That search pattern (a regular expression aka regex) is order-dependent. If I searched your last line, these would match:

(the second one is a red herring- "do the" is matched, the pipe says "or", so either "do the" or "tedder" is needed. So where does the asterisk come into play? Well, a period will match a single character, asterisk matches zero or more, plus would match one or more. Some examples:

/do.*asterisks/
/What do(barf)*/   <--- yes, this works, "zero or more barfs"
/What dob*/        <--- yes, this works, "zero or more bs"
/What do(barf+)/   <--- no, this doesn't match, "zero or more barfs"

That should give you a good start! So "feminist.*century" will match any paragraph that has those words IN THAT ORDER. It would not match "Saint Heroine was a 7th-century feminist". That's why I added a second rule that reversed the word order ("century.*feminism").
I've taken a few leaps and tangents in this explanation, explaining the dot, parenthesis, the pipe symbol, etc. I hope it gives you a good overview. I can answer part of it. See my question, and Tedder's response, right above this post. The bot has not been working for 7 days, so nothing got updated. Tedder himself needs to answer the rest for you. As far as I know, the bot, when it's working, only runs updates listed on this User:AlexNewArtBot page. England is not listed on there. It looks like User:Alex Bakharev is the one who blocked the English search result in 2011. He's probably the one one who would know why he did that. Tedder, the NewPageSearch over on TedderBot hasn't run since Saturday, May 19. The only thing that has been running since then is the CurrentPruneBot/census.
