Help with simplifying/subtemplate creating

Hi, I've created Template:Aircraft specs as way to automatically convert specifications into other units (among other things). Its done thru a series of #if functions. The template has grown quite large, but is basically the same code repeated over and over. I'd like to create a subtemplate and just call it multiple times, but can't seem to get the coding down. I've created a subtemplate Template:Aircraft specs/parameter, and moved one of the parameter loops there: {{ #if:{{{length m|}}} |* '''Length:''' {{convert|{{{length m|}}}|m|ftin|abbr=on}} {{{length note|}}} |{{#if:{{{length ft|}}} |{{#if:{{{length in|}}} |* '''Length:''' {{convert|{{{length ft|}}}|ft|{{{length in|}}}|in|m|abbr=on|disp=flip}} {{{length note|}}} |* '''Length:''' {{convert|{{{length ft|}}}|ft|m|abbr=on|disp=flip}} {{{length note|}}} }} }} }}

I would like to allow the word "length" to be a variable (renamed of course, to perhaps "parameter"), so that Template:Aircraft specs/sandbox pass the parameter "length", "span", etc to it. maybe this is done by adding the code {{Aircraft specs/parameter|length}}, {{Aircraft specs/parameter|span}}, ....

Well, some simplification using a subtemplate is possible, but it won't be as short as {{Aircraft specs/parameter|length}}. Something like {{Aircraft specs/parameter|Length|{{{length m|}}}|{{{length ft|}}}|{{{length in|}}}|{{{length note|}}}}} should work, but it's not very pretty. Svick (talk) 23:03, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

date never showing

I am trying to get it so that {{Cite GameFAQs}} (a wrapper template for cite web) will not display the date if its left blank, but still show it if it is filled in regardless of the coding format. 陣内_Jinnai 22:31, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Different colored links for stubs.

You should make it so the links throughout the whole site will be of a different color if they direct to a stub article. That way you can avoid the stubs if you prefer.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.19.86.40 (talk • contribs)

Stubs are only identified by user-added templates - it would require a tremendous amount of computational overhead to figure out if pages are stubs (basically you'd have to load each link on a page to check to see it the page has a stub template - or load a special 'stub category' page to see if a given link is included - and then re-color the link after the fact. I can't imagine that the result would be worth the overhead, not without some significant changes to the underlying structure of the wiki. --Ludwigs2 08:22, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Dates in chronological order

Concerning Template:Vgrelease. Could manual sorting be implemented for the release dates? I mean the order the fields in a single call are used: Currently, the template always displays JP -> NA -> PAL -> EU -> AUS, no matter which order you use in the template call. For example, {{vgrelease|NA|January 21, 1998|JP|January 29, 1998|PAL|May 8, 1998}} will display...

• NA: January 21, 1998
• JP: January 29, 1998
• PAL: May 8, 1998

JP comes before NA although it is used after NA in the call. The code above should actually result in this:

• ^NA January 21, 1998
• ^JP January 29, 1998
• ^PAL May 8, 1998

I don't know how hard that is to achieve, just thought I'd request it here as the current method of using separate template calls for manual sorting is just clunky, confusing to editors, and a waste of space (for the above example, we currently have to use {{vgrelease|NA=January 21, 1998}}{{vgrelease|JP=January 29, 1998|PAL=May 8, 1998}} to get the desired output). Film series/franchise infobox requested

There are several articles regarding various film franchises that utilize the "film" infobox. I think there is too much information requested in this infobox for a series of films. For a series like the first group of Star Wars movies, where the writers, producers and directors are mostly the same for all three films, it's usable. However, a series like Friday the 13th with a total of 12 movies (including the 2009 reboot), each with a different writing/directing/producing team, the infobox could be longer than the article. To illustrate this, I completed an "infobox film" template (see below) with all the information I could find already aggregated onto one page. If I had researched these movies more, I could have easily expanded with entries for screenplay, release dates, actors (a list long enough to warrant a separate article), etc, etc.

I propose a shorter infobox with only the core production information that is likely to be carried over across all or most of the movies in the series. In addition, there should be statistical information related to the entire franchise such as total revenue, number of films. I think this would be a very useful tool. I've made a table with the info that I feel should be included. Compare it to the infobox and I think you'll see my point.

Template:Google Warehouse

A template indicating that a model of the device/vehicle, ... which the particular article discusses exists in Google Warehouse should be created. It should be similar to the wikibooks/wikiversity, ... templates. I got the idea seeing that some historically important vehicles, ... are already available at Google Warehouse, see http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=e5a7a353d5fa8df844b2fa2cac0778f5 In addition, fabricators that want to make a new type of device, or simply recreate a vehicle, device, ... would require a 3D model. The core issue is that the template doesn't dynamically scales to adjust for potential infoboxes and other boxes, currently the template has a hard coded width (actually hard coded margin on the right) to work fine with the infobox when users use the default settings (220px image width), but when using a larger, custom, size (250px or 300px) the table moves down to make way for the infobox, creating huge chunks of whitespace. _Xeworlebi ^(talk) 22:59, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

I've attempted to fix the problem, though it causes other issues. The way I re-wrote it, it'll expand to the entire available space, however if there are multiple calls to the template and the available space varies between one track listing and the next (e.g., an infobox comes to an end), the layout will vary. For example, change all the {{tracklist}} templates on Garage Inc. to {{Track listing/sandbox}} — if your screen is wide enough, when you preview the changes (don't save them), you'll see that the first track listing is narrower than the other 3 because of the infobox. This could be fixed in most cases by wrapping the entire set in <div>...</div> tags, but that would have to be done on a page-by-page basis. I can't see any other way of writing it unless you just use a larger hard-coded right margin and hope for the best.

Give the sandbox changes a try on a few pages and if everything looks good, let me know, or just add a section to its talk page with an {{edit protected}} tag and ask an admin to copy the sandbox to the template page. If you do, you may want to point to, or copy, this discussion so there's a record of what we're fixing and what changes in behaviour it introduces. – RobinHood70 ^talk 23:48, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Nice work, there are still some beauty issues with collapsed lists. The table (not the track list itself but the outside border when collapsing is on) goes behind the infobox and the [show] is on the left instead of on the right as it is now (and usual with collapsed tables). Try it at Human Target (2010 TV series)#Soundtrack. Other than that the scaling was exactly what I was hoping for, in that the table gets smaller when there something in the way and goes full width when not. _Xeworlebi ^(talk) 13:29, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

I can't seem to get it. We'll have to wait for someone with better CSS skills than mine to come along. I've renamed it to something more descriptive. I don't think you will find support for putting this notice on articles. (Maintenance templates are for problems with the article itself.) I'll tackle this one in my sandbox, though I'll be using the {{Chart}} template rather than a straight table as was done in Ivan Vladislav's article — Charts are a bit of a nightmare to deal with, but I think still easier than using a normal table. It occurs to me that the Chart template has a 50-parameter limit, so the format will have to change a little bit. You can see in my sandbox that we're already up to 25 or so on the rows used to draw the lines. The three options to get around this are:

• drop each generation down and left under the preceding ones, as you can see that I'm about to do with Kera
• build it left-to-right instead of top-to-bottom
• go with a collapsible table like Bility suggests (though I notice he's gone for a left-to-right build as well)

I ran into the same problem when I tried the top-down approach; the tree is very wide. I couldn't say whether dropping groups down beneath others for more verticality or going left-to-right would be easier to read or implement. If a different image was created with larger text and better spacing, maybe using {{wide image}} would work. Okay, I'm done with my version for now. Now that the main text boxes are in, it's less work to change it to a left-to-right if we want, which I think is probably the best bet in the long run, since we're not limited vertically with {{Chart}} and can make it look more like a rotated version of the original. I'm willing to do the work if that's what people want, but I'll wait till we're sure, as that would still probably take a while.

Also, if I've goofed anywhere in the text, or additional formatting is desired, now's a good time to change it. Just one tip for future editing: it makes the charts enormously easier to work with when you use 5-character variable names (e.g., "Shish" instead of "Shishman"), as everything will line up between one Chart line and the next, so you know if you've misaligned something. Comment - Would it be possible for someone at Wikipedia to create a new type of infobox? It would be an infobox for literary festivals. As you can see there are several of them listed on Wikipedia so I would say there should be a Wikipedia literary festival infobox much like there is a film festival infobox.

Bus line template

Can someone code a generic bus line template along the lines of Template:Infobox rail line? There is already Template:Infobox busline but it is extremely ugly and doesn't look like our other transport infoboxes. Other non-standard bus line templates include Template:Infobox First Bus, Template:Infobox Glasgow Citybus, Template:Infobox London bus route, Template:Infobox SPT Bus, Template:Infobox West Midlands Buses, and Template:Infobox LPP Bus lines. Combining bus line templates...

So in the process of the bus line template creation above, I found more templates.... There are Template:Infobox Bus Route and Template:Infobox UK bus route, which are essentially the same. Could someone make the UK template a wrapper for a more general bus route template? A few changes will have to be made to the general template, but not many. And then there is Template:Infobox London bus route, which is currently a wrapper for Template:Infobox UK bus route but maybe should just be a wrapper for Template:Infobox Bus Route. And then once this is done we can look at combining Template:Infobox Bus Route and Template:Infobox bus line! :) Calliopejen1 (talk) 13:27, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

I've converted UK bus route and London bus route to bus line, and the transclusions are fine for the most part. Right now I'm trying to figure out what to do with captions and operator logos when no image is specified. As it is, the caption won't show without an image, but some templates (example) use them this way. Also, I didn't know what to do with the operator logo, but it used to go beneath the caption, so that's where I put it. Unfortunately, the same problem arises when you have the operator logo but no image (example). I put in an ugly hack to display the caption without an image, but the infobox template inserts a <br /> tag, creating an extra line where the image should be. I can move the caption up with the "captionstyle" parameter, but then it gets even hackier. When I get back from lunch I'll see about finding another place for caption and operator logo to live if it's still borked. By the way, is the operator logo used correctly? What's the difference between the operator logo and the normal logo? Maybe we can just take operator logos and put them in the normal logo space, or the logo2 space. — Bility (talk) 20:01, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Okay, I moved the operator logo into the second subheader field (appears between the bus number and the main image). For the caption issue, I made another field entirely, since in this case it's not captioning the image but serving another purpose. It is now in the first subheader, between the same elements as the operator logo, but placed just above the operator logo. I also replaced Infobox Bus Route with Infobox bus line, so I think that's everything. Lastly, I started a discussion on the bus line talk about parameters that I didn't put into the template. Incumbent Pope

Would it be possible to create an incumbent Pope template so that the name of the incumbent pope can be easily inserted into templates such as {{Infobox diocese}} so that they don't have to be manually updated every time there is a change of pope. Help making a template

I made a template for another media wiki project ( however I have had this same need a number of times when making new templates on Wikipedia, so if anyone can help me, it will be a significant help to me in making infobox templates here, as well as there), which I have placed here to look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:MattGagnon/template

Basically, all I really need is help with making this template hide the rows that do not have any information provided in them. In other words, if I leave something blank, such as office 2, 3, 4, 5, etc..., I don't want those rows to show up. Currently, when I leave those blank, the information still shows up.

I am not a professional at this, and I did find http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conditional_tables but I think that the jargon and descriptions are JUST a tad over my head for me to get it working myself.

I've given some basic offers of help to Matt and I will try to fixup his infobox a bit. It would, I think, behold regular contributors here to try to offer help rather than just slam others off with telling them where to go without advising them what to do. I could tell a few people here where to go, but that would not be AGF.

There may well be another infobox that exactly suits Matt's purpose, but I imagine Bility doesn't mean it, but that sounded to me like a "go and learn your templates, newbie" comment. I very much hope it wasn't and was just my misinterpretation. I will have a look and try to fix it up a bit, even if it is superfluous it might help to learn a bit, for me as much as he. Infobox: Courthouses

If this Infobox template already exists, please advise. If not, is it possible to have one? Many courthouses use the NRHP Infobox template, which works fine if it's listed on the national register. See Brooks County Courthouse (Texas), which I adapted from the NRHP. Without the NRHP, it will not show a pin map or Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, such as Presidio County Courthouse. Is it possible to have a generalized Infobox template for courthouses that will accommodate those which are only for Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks and/or those which have neither NRHP or RTHL? Infobox Museum

See "Infobox Courthouse" above. We got my request taken care of by using Infobox: Building with |map dot label=. Now I'm working on an article that will use the template "Infobox Museum", and map dot label doesn't work on that one. Again, I find no way to affix a label to the map dot (map pin). Seems kind of useless to have an unlabeled red dot in the middle of the map, no matter what the tiny type at the bottom says. A red dot on a map should have a label next to it. Here's an example: San Antonio Museum of Art. If Wikipedia is not hard and fast about what I use, maybe I should just revert to Infobox Building for the museum article I'm working on. Template:Infobox power station

In the 'Bottom section: For all infoboxes', I would like to change the parameter labeled 'average annual generation' to 'annual_net_generation', and change the word 'gross' in its description to 'net', since this is what is typically reported and more relevant for power stations. I am not sure of the coding, what it would change, or everything that needs to be changed in making this edit.
Could someone could explain or just change this?

I would also like to delete the parameter 'net_generation', due to conflict with the above and with its own description ("Gross power generation since commissioning of the power station"). I doubt that it is used as described, but don't know how to check, or if deleting it would remove it from any articles that might already use it.

I have just been playing with trending topics, such as this one: Category:Cities in the East of England, and it occurred to me that I could do something similar with Template:East Cambridgeshire - for example Category:East Cambridgeshire. Simply Encouraging Talk Template

I'm interested in being able to add a thing to the top of talk pages to provide a little bit of balanced encouragement and a couple of most fundamental tips/links on making comments or edits.

The template along those lines seems to be Template:Talk_header which is great but for when pages "attract frequent or perpetual debate, articles often subject to controversy, and/or recent-and-highly-visible topics." It has quite a lot of links & points in it, esp with the policies column, and when adding it there seems to be an extra undocumented line at the top warning "This is not a forum for general discussion of the article's subject", which I feel could tipo the balance of it toward confusing or discouraging new people.

On the other hand there's Template:Be_bold which is also great but is specifically about jumping in to editing, as things can easily be undone, and doesn't mention talk page commenting, or editing policy.

I've maybe missed other relevant templates or message boxes, but if not then I'd like to contribute to a new one that sort of mixes the above two but simplified for articles needing encouragement. For developed articles where it's not a matter of just adding a critical improve tag, but where people don't seem to be making substantial contributions and maybe queries/suggestions aren't getting replied to much or at all (so check back later or ask elsewhere but don't be disheartened be bold). I'm imagining it a bit smaller in size with slightly less words/links, but including some encouragements along lines of the be bold template. For further details I feel like I'd need to play around with a draft template - I've noticed links to sandbox testing but really can't tell how to do it. Could you help me get started with that? I checked this request and while moving the template Infobox Station to a sandbox for adding the new parameters, I recognized that there is already a undocumented parameter called {{{native_name_lang}}} and {{{native_name}}. I'm a bit confused as to where it is? Also I think the way it's done in Infobox SMS station is the best solution for what's needed for the DPRK railway stations (though with a couple minor North Korea-specific changes - "chosŏn'gŭl" instead of "hangul", MR before RR). There is a page Template:Infobox DPRK Railway Station that's at the moment just a redirect to Template:Infobox Station, perhaps the resulting code could be put there, as this would be very specific to (North) Korean needs? Welcome template for sandbox users

I think it would be great if we had a template to welcome users whose first/only edits are edits to the sandbox. I looked for one and was very surprised to see that we don't already have such a template (or if we do, I couldn't find it. It ought to look just like the regular welcome message, but it should include some reference to the sandbox and encourage the new users to continue/expand their editing. Maybe it should look something like this:

Katakana tables

Hi, would it be possible for someone to create two templates:

• {{katakana table}} — This to include the content of the first table ("Katakana syllabograms") from the article Transcription into Japanese.

• {{katakana table extended}} — This to include the content of the second table ("Transcription katakana") from the article Transcription into Japanese.

The purpose of these templates is so that the tables can be included in both Transcription into Japanese and Katakana without the current duplication. Once the templates have been created, I will take care of fixing up the articles.

I found this: Template:Sport overview, so maybe we could improve this one. It doesn't have any documentation at present. I think it would be great to have a country flagicon and a small shield of the national governing body. The flagicon feature, though present, is apparently not working in the existing template. Also, I think the national team nickname should be removed as this belongs in the national team infobox. Still not seeing where to put the flag, it's just a small icon, usually it's prefacing some text, not just standalone. I edited the sandbox version to show where we could have the flag and also added the title attendance record at the bottom. I also added a new test case with the international competitions. It works for me. I think we could use {national1}, {national2} and {national3} in the lists in order for the transclusions in use to continue working. Similarly for {club1}, {club2} and {club3}.

For the international part, could we have something like pairs of {intlname1} and {intlperf1}, {intlname2} and {intlperf2}, {intlname3} and {intlperf3} like we have the pairs {leader_title_1} and {leader_name_1} in Template:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction?

We could make a bunch of international parameters, but I thought we wanted to simplify this template? What I suggest is using the existing national and club parameters to build the lists, and add a cleanup category to the template if those parameters are used so we can go through them and convert them to lists. The cleanup category is a good idea, I didn't know about that. The only reason I wanted parameters for international was so that we could have the competition name and performance in neat columns like in Template:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction and not like it is right now in Template:Sport overview/testcases (ie. without having to use colons), if you understand what I mean. The best way is to do it how you did on the testcases, to be honest. Using the label / data pairing, the labels will be suppressed if there is no data, such as just listing a tournament that they never won anything. The template is helpful for formatting, but it's not mandatory that every piece of information be input in separate parameters; making a normal list shouldn't be too taxing and allows for greater flexibility. — Bility (talk) 21:38, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

All right I made the switch and updated the doc page. For some articles, the {country} national {sport} team link should not appear, e.g. Chess in India. If the {country} parameter is omitted, then the national team link does not appear, but with this, the flagicon also disappears. Well I already put overrides for them, but if there's not a single "team" link to found then yeah, it still wants to put something when you give it the country. The template was made with a very specific format so it's been a pain to try and code around the legacy issues. As I go through the tracking category I see more and more cases where this template is being used as a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. The existing image Rod of asclepius.png can move to the right, so it's opposite the exclamation mark used on those message boxes. Here is a tescases page: Template:Medref/testcases. You can test the date parameter on an article (just show preview, don't save) to see how that works. I tested the date myself, but if you want to see it in action feel free. Yes {{DMCA}} isn't necessary, all categorization functionality is built in to {{ambox}}. One thing I will caution you on, is that the template is currently in use on multiple talk pages. Date works, yes. Without date it places them in non-hidden Category:Articles needing additional medical references or if date is used in Category: Articles needing additional medical references from April 2012. It works for the small and large versions, although only displays the date on the large version. Ahh I see now how talk is used! Ideally Reason would render before / on a line before Talk I think. Small is pared down regardless of parameters used, which makes sense really. It still does that strange text changing (Please review and => Please fix) of the plea unfortunately. I changed up the order in which they display now, reason first then talk. Also put them both on the same top line, which should keep the notice from expanding vertically unless they're very lengthy. No, you need to include the date if you want it to go in the correct date category, it's just that if you do, it also puts it after the text. So it's all or nothing. Displaying the date after the text is fine. However it still displays the date even when the date parameter isn't used i.e. all you add to the page is {{Medref/sandbox}}). Others like Refimprove, on its own above-linked testcases page, only display the date if you include the param |date=month/year. Both do correctly categorise articles in the parent Articles needing additional refs category rather than its child date-specific cats if |date isn't included. Bizarrely, in Mainspace it displays the date only when actually used.

Yeah you're right, I checked the ambox code and it inserts {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}} (i.e. April 2024) for the date when it's on the calling template's page or a subpage thereof. The reason it works as it does on refimprove, is because that template doesn't use |name=, so it fails the check and just passes the date, which can be empty. It shouldn't affect mainspace though, it's just for the template and its subpages, probably so you can see what date you should put in the template when you use it. — Bility (talk) 03:17, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Template Help

Is this the appropriate place to request help with a template? If not please let me know where is.

My template sometimes needs to make calls like {{Str number/trim|13<ref>a reference</ref>}} which return 13 rather than the correct answer of 13 because the ref is being processed by the wiki software. Technically this is probably a bug in {{Str number/trim}} and {{Str letter/trim}} that should be fixed. The template makes this call via {{Str number/trim| {{{1}}} }}. I am wondering how I can call <nowiki> on {{{1}}}. It's worth noting that in testing even {{Str number/trim|<nowiki>13<ref>a reference</ref>}}</nowiki> appears to return the incorrect results of nothing. But I can say that you can just translate english templates to your wiki it is legal and you dont need add anything like {{translated article}} template talk page. But you should be carefull: if template which you translating uses other templates you should check is there exist at your wiki, if no you should translate them too. 1. There are two different pictures of the clapperboard. Why duplicate?

I'm trying to create a template that points to the location a relisted RfD is now located. Basically, it should look just like the manually created link at: Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2012 June 14#Petara.

The template should create the level 4 heading (based on a given parameter) with span_id. It should place the {{relisted}} icon and text and create a link to the relevant section of the new log page, named Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/YYYY monthname day#redirect (the section name parameter will be used for both the link and the generated section heading). Ideally it should default to the current day if a different one is not specified.

I started to try and create one at User:Thryduulf/RFD relisted (testing at User:Thryduulf/sandbox) but I've exceeded my skill level already (copying mainly from {{oldrfd}} and even what I've tried to do so far doesn't work! Thryduulf (talk) 22:23, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

I also want it to address articles about people that list their works for example, but say nothing about the style of their work (if a musician for ex.), or the impact of the person(s) work. A perfect example of an article I'd like to use it for is the article, Plaid (band). I want the main part in bold to say, This article reads like a list. The rest of it I would like to say... Template:Nested cite

We could use a dedicated citation template for a work citing another work. This comes up fairly often. To make it a bit clearer, this arises when you have access to source X, and that source is itself citing source Y, which you don't have access to, so you need to cite X, citing Y. This is discussed at WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT, though the form given there is far from full attribution and would not pass muster at WP:FAC I wouldn't think. Ideally, it would work like this:

Starr, Ringo (1967). Name of Book I Haven't Seen. Liverpool, UK: Apple Records Press. p. 1. ISBN X-XXXX-XXXX-X, cited in Zappa, Frank (1979). Name of book I Have Seen. Baltimore, MA: Mothers of Invention Press. p. 2. ISBN X-XXXX-XXXX-X.

Road junction lists need to use templates, not tables

I would like a template that informs users navigating to a page that the road junction list/exit list is supposed to be built using templates, such as Template:Jctint, Template:Jcttop, and Template:Jctbtm, and not in a wikitable format. It should use the same basic format as Template:Exit list, but the "text" field would read thus: '''This section has a table that represents a list of exits or junctions. However, it should be formatted using templates, such as {{jcttop}}, {{jctint}}, {{jctbtm}}, etc., as appropriate.'''<br>Please help by <span class="plainlinks">[{{fullurl:{{FULLPAGENAME}}|action=edit}} adding the missing exit or junction list]. Also, instead of placing the article in [[Category:Routes needing a junction list|{{PAGENAME}}]], the template should place the article in a category named [[Category:Routes having an exit list that should be templated|{{PAGENAME}}]]. Please reject this. The USRD project already has a tracking method in the project banner. The reader won't know that the table is hard-coded vs. created using templates unless the table is missing the automatically converted km column (or mile if metric is first). Since the request is active most in USRD, his request isn't needed because the project already has a non-forward-facing option for tracking these, as was explained to him at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. Roads#Road junction listsImzadi 1979 → 04:25, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

This should only be done once the road junction list templates are modified to allow the use of a coordinates column (or parameter); there being no consensus to prohibit such. Until such time, the use of those templates can only be optional, as it is legitimate for editors to avoid them, in order to include coordinates. Note also that there is no specific reference to the US in the request; negating Imzadi1979's objection, which is based on supposition to that effect. One relatively new source for biographies of those living in the USA in 1940 is the 1940 United States Census. We need a template that makes it easier to cite a particular page ("schedule') from that census.

One index of census records is available at FamilySearch. I am requesting that a template for citing a schedule from FamilySearch be created. I think the easiest way to expand what I am asking for is to give an example:

The template should be used like this:

{{1940USCensusSchedule|name=Burt Reynolds|at=FS|id=MM9.1.1/K4L6-RVQ|accessdate=2012-09-06}}

and produce the following:

[https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K4L6-RVQ Burt Reynolds] at [[FamilySearch]]. Retrieved 2012-09-06.

The only mandatory parameter is the id; if name is missing, it default to PAGENAME, if at if missing, the source text defaults to "at FamilySearch."; if accessdate is missing, no "Retrieved 2012-xx-yy." is generated.

For now, only FamilySearch would be supported as a source of census schedules, and as a result, the generated URL always starts with "https://familysearch.org/pal:/" But it would be useful to allow for URLs from other sources be able to be added.

Bonus points if you allow the first unnamed parameter to be assumed to be the name, and the second unnamed parameter to be summed to be the id.

Thus, the example above would be equivalent to:

{{1940USCensusSchedule|Burt Reynolds|MM9.1.1/K4L6-RVQ|at=FS|accessdate=2012-09-06}}

Requested Template

I would like to request someone make a template. That would combine these two templates that already exists. {{box-shadow}}, and also {{border-radius}}. I have made an example of what it would look like on my User Sandbox page here. It would look good, as well as make it more appealing and eye catching to the eye. As well it makes it pop-out more. This template needs a major cleanup and re-structuring so it can cope with Issue numbers as well as volume numbers.

It's also impossible to understand the template code in it's current form.

The templates in this section cover either musicians, musical ensembles or organizations. They should be navigation boxes at the bottom of the articles. Musical templates should contain the people, albums and songs associated with the topic. Organization templates should contain the people, products, and subsidiaries affiliated with them.

Los Angeles Common Council

The bottom-anchored template for the above page would be headed "Notable members of the Los Angeles Common Council." and it would list all the blue-linked names to be found on that page; I think alphabetically would be best. This page will have no other names added to it, its time frame being 1850-1889, although some of the black names on it will be blue-linked in the future. Considering the time frame involved, a simple black-grey-white color scheme might be best. Any questions, please?

Template:Infobox theater misbehaving

Infobox theater has two incompatible sets of coord parameters... Could someone help rationalize this? (This template scares me, so I don't want to do it myself!) The "coordinates"/"latitude"/"longitude" parameters (which are incompatible with the pushpin map) generate inline and title coordinate outputs, but only "latd"/"longd" work with the pushpin map. Replacing an aspect ratio hack currently required for the Multiple image template

{{Multiple image}} documentation come complete with an aspect ratio hack that leads to potential maintenance problems. As documented here, to get a common height to a set of images being displayed horizontally using {{Multiple image}}, an editor must incorporate the aspect ratio of each non-square image using the following per-image width expression:

{{#expr: (dh * ow / oh) round 0}}

where, expressed in pixels, dh is the desired height, ow is the original width, and oh is the original height.

The basic request is to improve this. More specifically, at a minimum, create a new template that replaces that expression, such as {{imagewidth|dh|oh|ow}} As far as I know, no such template already exists.

If its possible for a template to detect ow and oh, you could implement a more ambitious and usable approach. For a coveted {{Template Barnstar}}, incorporate support for dh directly into {{Multiple image}}. My proposal would be to introduce a parameter called height, which would be a per-template instance like width (as opposed to the numbered per-image parameters like width1, width2, etc.) Specifying height in this manner would eliminate the need to specify the multiple per-image width expressions.
