Proposal to create a smoking fetish template

To whom it may concern: I would like to suggest creating a template for the purpose of addressing a subject known officially as capagnolia; more-commonly known and refered to as "smoking fetish". My request is not-only based on personal opinion, but actually rooted in a lifetime of experience. This highly-underated, misunderstood & exclusive (some might say "exquisite") subject today more than ever - considering it`s particular composition & range of unique aspects, esp. a steadily-growing & seemingly never-ending supply of modern-day PC-related subject matter (PC in this case meaning both "politically-correct" AND "personal computer") - I believe more than qualifies it for a discussion template of it`s own origin & useful purpose.

That's not what templates are for. The idea behind a template is that you are going to use it on multiple pages, so you want a standardized form. Templates aren't to include in just one article. Derry Gaelic Athletic Association Clubs

Hi can anyone make a template for Derry Gaelic Athletic Association Clubs. You can call it Derry GAA Clubs. It's for Gaelic Athletic Association clubs in Co. Derry, Ireland. You could make it in the same style as Template talk:Kildare Clubs. Please use the same headings, except replace "Kildare" with "Derry" in the first heading. Also there is no need for the "Other clubs" heading.

As for articles....could yhou plaese include the following under the relevant heading...
Senior Football Championship:
Ballinderry
Bellaghy
Castledawson

Intermediate Football Championship:
Coleraine GAC

Future Event, date specific, effecting the status of an article

I see the need for a general Future Event template, indicating the specified date, where the status of an article will change - with the facility for a brief description of change (needed); see Talk:Haslev municipality, this is infrequently edited and may not be changed promptly after it becomes redundant. The specified date function could be indexed, so it could alert admins of a article in need of update (although this may create a slew of alerts every January 1st).LessHeard vanU 21:14, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Iceland topics

I thought that a template containing Iceland topics, similar to Template:Portugal topics could be useful. I was planning to add it to newly created Portal:Iceland. I could easily create that template, but I reckon I need approval first. Please provide feedback. By the way, I'm requesting this template because I could not find one of its kind. There seems to be no template for Iceland topics (there is no such template that contains a link to Iceland). I'm generally not in favor of such templates, but there are plenty of them so I think there's little chance it would be deleted if you created one. -- Rick Block (talk) 15:44, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Additional (cricket) all-rounder table

Parallel computing

Since the articles on Parallel computing can use some strength from eachother, I'd like to see an article series box on the subject. I'm thinking of something like Template:IPstack, but aligned left, without the etc markers ("..."), the pipe character as seperator instead of the comma, and the individual field tags bold when not linkified.

Below is the structure I propose -- primary heading represents the caption, secondary headings represent fields, list entries represent individual elements.

Problems

Note that I've specifically _not_ listed individual implementations -- that's something for the articles themselves. The box would just get clogged with little to no extra value.

Request to rewrite

I was looking through the articles for deletion last night, and I am very concerned that "delete" notices are being pasted on articles which although clearly are in need of much work, are potentially good ideas.

Many of these articles appear from people who have not written before and are unaware of the procedures (or even how to put in titles, categories, etc.) and it clearly isn't a good first action to in effect say: "THIS STUPID ARTICLE AND AUTHOR SHOULD BE DELETED".

To avoid this situation I believe the procedures for deletion should be:

  1. If it meets criteria for speedy deletion - speedy delete.
  2. If the content probably warrants deletion and it is unlikely any article could be written under the title proposed that would be kept, then slap on a deletion notice
(but the comment should be in proportion to the effort/newness of the author')
  1. If the content may warrant deletion but it is possible the title may be good for an article, I proposed a: A Request to rewrite

A Request to rewrite

In essence a request to rewrite is an inoffensive deletion notice!

A request to rewrite would be a notice to the author that unless they substantially improve the article it will be deleted. The request would be time limited, after which if the article has not improved it will "automatically" become a request to delete (if edited) or deleted (if no action has been taken).

My personal opinion is that unless an article meets a criteria for speedy deletion or is posted by a seasoned author, then authors objecting to the deletion should be able to get the deletion notice removed and a "Request for rewrite" put in its place and the deletion notice should make this clear!.

In practice the two are very similar - if the author doesn't put in a substantial to improve the article it will be deleted anyway - but the psychological impact is very different: delete says: "go away you stupid...."; rewrite says: "good try but it will have to go unless..."

In addition the request to rewrite (and deletion notices) should go to a help page which explains:

  1. How to request help ({ { helpme } } -it may sound obvious but it isn't - and when you are new and spending 90% of your time trying to work out how to make bold and have one evening before the deletion date to finish the article ..... trying to find out how to get help is a nightmare!)
  2. How to "deal" with a request to delete.
    1. How to get it removed so that you can see what you are editing
    2. How to use an { { under construction } } notice!
    3. How to get it removed so that those involved have an incentive to work on the article
    4. How to change it into a request to rewrite
    5. How to move to home test-pages (not the kid's sandpit)
    6. A simple explanation of the deletion discussion.
    7. How to speedy delete your own article
  3. A link to some common "templates" for articles by which I mean: User:Haseler/template
  4. How to change the name of an article to make it less "contentious"
  5. How to explain the purpose of an article which is under construction so that the article is considered for its purpose rather than the current state of editing

New Article

If the worst company in the world (Micro$oft) can give me a choice of templates when I ask for a new document, why doesn't Wikipedia?

Having started a few articles (and having had more deleted), I can never remember what kinds of things ought to go in. Eventually I started a template article of my own: User:Haseler/template with the common headings. It ought to have e.g. some category information a "{ { stub } }" & "{ { underconstruction} }" notice at the top (but that wrecks Wikipedia if I leave it there!) If for new users it ought also to have a link to "how to edit a page" and "shortcuts" or whatever it is.

What I personally would like to do be able to do is to open a new page for editing and put:

{ { NewArticle} }, save it and magically a template article appears.

Better still, I would be given a choice of articles: biography, history, ideas, etc. and suitable headings etc. would appear for the respective category. (I also think when a new page is created there should be the option to place it on a user's testpages)

Ideally all new articles would open with this template as a default - which experience users could remove/Opt out of in preferences! --Mike 09:26, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

This can be done with the "preload" functionality of the Inputbox extension. I believe it is currently installed on WP in some form, but it was a little inconsistent last time I looked at using it. Have a look at m:Help:Inputbox#Preload.

Just to note, I don't think this is appropriate to introduce across the board, but I see no problem with you using it for yourself. Just for fun, I did some hacking of my monobook.js to add a form to the "newarticletext" box that shows on the top of a new article. Amazon.com

Greetings! So many of the books, DVDs, etc. have links to Amazon.com as a source of information, I'd like to request a template for Amazon.com external links. Could someone create a template for all the footballers who have scored at least 100 English Premier League goals. There are currently 13 players to have achieved this feat - Alan Shearer, Ian Wright, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Michael Owen, Teddy Sheringham, Matt Le Tissier, Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand, Dion Dublin, Thierry Henry and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. db-school

There's more to this one than requesting the template I know, but can we have a custom db-school template stating that the article in question has been requested to be speedily deleted because it doesn't assert why the school, university, college or other educational institution is important or notable? •Elomis• 06:09, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I've created {{db-school}}, but don't use it for secondary education or higher. There's discussion about whether or not such institutions are inherently notable, so marking them for speedy would be inappropriate. -Amarkov blahedits 05:21, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

with what you said, I'm not sure if you're confirming that db-repost isn't kosher for past speedy deletes, or if you're saying "previous speedy deletion can't be used as a cause for new speedy deletion." Speedies may be performed for reasons that are too varied fro such a template to be useful. If a Verbascum blattaria article is created and deleted as {{db-nonsense}}, it would theoretically be eligible automatically under such a criterion... Circeus 05:20, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

PermissionRequested template

At the moment there does not seem to be any templates notifying admins that a user has contacted the copyright owner requesting the image's use of Wikipedia.

The recommended template below, which may be called {{PermissionRequested}}, is made to respond to Template:Copyrighted, Template:Noncommercial and similar warning templates, and can warn admins not to delete the image until notification has been received.



This image is awaiting permission of use from its owner.

ExampleUser has contacted the copyright owner, http://www.example.org, asking permission to license this image under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. Please do not delete this image or hide this template while a response is expected.

There are three suggested arguments: 1 - username, 2 - copyright holder, 3 - date.

There needs to be an automated mechanism for deleting content with expired permission requests. {{Replaceable fair use}} includes
[[Category:Replaceable fair use images as of {{{day|{{CURRENTDAY}}}}} {{{month|{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}}}} {{{year|{{CURRENTYEAR}}}}}]]
so perhaps you should include something for a relevant category of unlicensed images, to make it easy for admins to cleanup. Should also add that if you are going to include a tagging date like you have, you will need to force people to subst the template always, as is also done in {{Replaceable fair use}} --Dgies 17:29, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
That's what I was thinking, Dgies. Unless anybody objects, I can build the template and categories and edit Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission to instruct users to use the template.

No, this is a bad idea. Copyright laws don't recognize what people expect to recieve, they recognize what they have. So a picture should not be kept until a reply is recieved, it should be deleted until a reply is recieved. -Amarkov blahedits 01:01, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
In certain situations, (like RFU), Wikipedia does have the right to use the image but for policy, not legal, reasons it must be deleted if not made available under different license terms. Wouldn't {{PermissionRequested}} be acceptable in those sorts of cases? We might need to include a note on it "This template can only be used for type-Foo copyright problems" --Dgies 07:34, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

{Redundant} Template

As I was browsing the German version of Wikipedia, a template that I came across and realized would be useful is the Redundant template.

In addition, there is a page explaining redundancy and how to use the tag (link). It also offers examples of how to discuss the subject, if you believe:
- There is no redundancy between the topics, and they do not need further work
- The topic choices are not redundant, but the difference in the articles is not obvious, and work needs to be done on the articles to make the differences more clear
- The articles should be merged
There is also a wiki category for open redundancy tags (sorted by month into subcategories) that are more than three months outstanding.

I could not find any tag under the merge/split/move section for articles that clearly have lots of overlap and need clarification, but probably not a merger. It addresses the problem more directly than a Cleanup or Merger tag.Thalassicus01 22:28, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

That would be fairly easy to make, though the maitenence tag bots would have to be updated to recognize it, but it assumes that articles which have some thematic overlap are redundant, which is not necessarily the case. I agree, it more closely fits under the Split/Merge subcategory (where it is placed on the German page), as those tags spark more discussion. On the other hand, it's used when a merger is likely not needed, somewhat overlapping the categories. I also agree that overlapping topics are not necessarily redundant, one of the three suggestions on the explanation page (as translated above) is to discuss why the topics (even though they overlap thematically) might be sufficiently distinguished to not require further work. Another name for the template could be {Overlap} or a similar synonym, the German word used is Redundanz.Thalassicus01 22:28, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

User Language Template for Tunisian Arabic users

Hi! I am requesting a user language template for the Tunisian Arabic Language Users which is now listed on Wikipedia:Babel, the wikipedia code for Tunisian Arabic is "aen" —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Simmy85 (talk • contribs).

The Tunisian Arabic article also says "aeb" as does the SIL reference page for ISO 639-3 language codes. The code "aen" is for Armenian sign language.[1] Mike Dillon 15:11, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Arabic to Roman Numerals

I was looking for a template that converts Arabic numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...) to roman numerals. It'd be a great template for those who know nothing about Roman numerals, and it'd be great for what I'm trying to do now. Do Not Delete Template

i've created a couple of articles two times, and they have been deleted twice. i'm thinking of adding some kind of template, with an image that says "delete" in a circle that is slashed. text should say "Please Do Not Delete This Article. It has been requested by a user who wants to keep it undeleted. If you think this article should be deleted, please discuss it in the article's talk page." if you could do a link to several talk pages, that'd be great. i don't know how to link multiple talk pages. it's just a suggestion, because the articles i've made i want to keep. just try, if you can. thanks! talk back in my talk page. General notifier for people using a talk page

please provide template {{unclear writing}}

it should be like "cleanup" except refer to unclear writing. The template "cleanupconfusing" is good, but in the place I would like to add it there is nothing confusing about the prose. It's just a little unclear and needs cleanup. For now, I'm adding a simple cleanup tag, but "unclear writing" would be better. This is the section. It looks like it's been copyedited fairly well. It's not in need of "cleaning up", it's just simply an unclear approach. The template should prompt the author to try their hand again, hopefully attaining a clearer version. They shouldn't really clean up their version, they should really realize it will always be inherrently pretty unclear. HTML Timeline Requested

Can Wikipedia create a template which automates making (and rearranging/organizing) HTML files into a historic time line which can be used by anyone for any time line in any historic period (from Ancient History to Modern).

These types of templates exist in cyberland for Word Documents and Excell files but not for HTML. What would be perfect would be a style sheet developed or other type of template into which a student of history could enter an event or person with the event or person's time span, source of information, photo(s), and write up (1 or more paragraphs)...with a seperate "click out" page for more "in depth" look at the event or person's life yet with one overall "page" that shows how things relate to one another. Vertical or horizontal doesn't matter (maybe both?) for the time line, just so that the summary on the time line is clickable to another web page that can give details.

Life in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations

Both the African Union and the European Union has this template, i think ASEAN should also, as a matter of fact i think as many international organizations with some sort of membership should included Briaboru

The requester is referring to {{Life in the African Union}} and {{Life in the European Union}}. There is currently no article on Life in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations that is comparable to Life in the African Union or Life in the European Union, so the template for ASEAN would be mostly redlinks. There are a lot of pages which have been locked and have the template that tells you to go to the talk page to look up why. Honestly, I've barely ever been able to find out why exactly a page has been locked and would like to suggest some mention of a reason being either mentioned on the page itself or the talk page, preferably through use of a template. Like this:

This can be found in the protection log for the page. For instance, //en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=protect&page=United+States. Perhaps the {{Protected}} template and friends should link to the protection log, but this should probably be discussed at Template talk:Protected instead of here. Vandalism Watch Template Request

I created and would like to use the below template for use with an article (Johnny Rebel (singer)) that has been hit by vandals (or a vandal) over 30 times since September.

Note: This page has been the target of frequent vandalism and is monitored closely for unacceptable edits.

Does this meet with approval? (I.e., may I do this?)

You don't need permission to do it, but I don't think it's a great idea. You might have a look at WP:BEANS. Also, I don't think that being vandalized 30 times in 3 months is a big deal, especially if the article is being closely montitored. Right, I get it. The "Beans" article makes sense. I won't add the tag to the site in question. If I were an administrator, however, I would semi-protect the site, perhaps for over a month at a time, because the vandalism in question is being caused by an anonymous AOL user (presumably the same AOL user), and I seem to be the one who inevitably ends up reverting the article. You can ask for semi-protection at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. I haven't examined the article history, so I can't say whether or not semi-protection is actually warranted in this case. On further reflection, 30 "vandalisms" for a fairly obscure musician in 3 months may be a little high, assuming it is vandalism and not a content dispute. Mike Dillon 17:47, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your additional response. I don't think the vandalism is a matter of content dispute; rather, I think the vandal doesn't like the article located at the external link, because he keeps deleting the external link, or sabotaging the link so that it doesn't work. This is almost always what he does -- although on rare occasions he also adds a racist comment, such as using the "N word".
I think the vandal in question dislikes the external link because the article to which it leads exposes the real name of the racist singer using the pseudonym Johnny Rebel and, more importantly, paints the singer in a very negative light. The article at the external link is a legitimate newspaper article from the Gannett-owned weekly "Times of Acadiana" in Lafayette, La. (See Times of Acadiana) When the author of the article, Nick Pittman, left the Times, the newspaper deleted the article from its archives; therefore, Pittman reprinted it on his own personal web site for future reference. That's why the article is not on the newspaper's official site.
Also, the Rebel article on Wikipedia was indeed semi-protected at my request for about two weeks back in October or so, and that did take care of the problem temporarily, since the vandal never logs in, but is an anonymous AOL user (judging from his IP addresses). Template for citations and other long sections

I'm looking for a template that allows you to add references, etc, and 'minimize' them in a manner like 'content' box at the top of articles.

For example, the article History of feminism has a large amount of sources and citations, if their was a way to hide these, it would be extremely useful in the department of reader-friendly.

It would be even more useful if something like this could be created, where the information was located elsewhere and didn't add to the article size.

90% of the times, such a section is placed under a header. If such a template is to be used, it must allow for the "footnotes" part to disappear because there will be a header above it. Also, does it work with {{reflist}} columns? Circeus 14:35, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Unrenderable Characters (Arabic transliteration)

A number of characters based on the ArabDIN 31635 standard are used on pages that discuss Arabic-related issues. Unfortunately, they do not all display correctly on common browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0. I have tried replacing individual characters with equivalents that do display, but I have gotten mixed results, and I don't know why. See Arabic alphabet and Qur'an. There seems to be a set of templates, such as {{ArabDIN|ʼ}}, that are causing the problem. I can't fix the problem myself, but I'd like to be able to flag the pages that are affected so that they can be fixed by someone who DOES know how. Suggested text: "This article or section contains characters in the ArabDIN 31635 encoding scheme which do not render properly on common web browsers such as Internet Explorer. I was researching a problem with an unusual unicode character displaying, and came across information indicating that it's a matter of whether the browser has a font that can handle it. Chicago Electric Railroad Templates

Could somebody create a template for the electrified Chicago railroads? It would have a section on defunct railroads, including the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee, Chicago Aurora and Elgin, and Chicago Surface Lines, as well as a "Currently Operating" section which would contain the Chicago Transit Authority, South Shore Line, and Metra Electric. I know that there are more than that, but there could be an edit button. I think it would be a good template to have, since Electric Railroads have been an important part of Chicago's history. Non-profit organization infobox

I would like a non-profit organization infobox. Right now, articles like World Wide Fund for Nature use {{Infobox Company}}, but that is not sufficient enough. It's a kind of weird to speak of Industry and Products when we're actually talking about the environment. User:MamaGeek already proposed a Nonprofit charitable organisatons box and I think that one could be tweaked to work for all non-profit organizations. Thanks in advance. A reasonable idea but you need to be more specific. What exactly will be changed from {{Infobox Company}}? Most of it's fields are optional so if they don't apply you can just ignore them. You need "Charitable focus" and "Volunteers" added; anything else? —Dgiest c 15:54, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Excessive category clean-up template

I would like to propose an excessive category template that can be applied to articles that appear at the top of Special:Mostcategories. This could be used to indicate that some type of category clean-up is needed (whether it involves removing categories from the individual article pages or consolidating or deleting impractical categories). The problem with that is, having lots of categories is not necessarily bad. For instance, George H.W. Bush, at the top of the list, belongs in all the categories, and is in no redundant ones. A template implying that it is necessary to remove categories doesn't work. -Amark moo! 15:41, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
Please read my request again. The template would also encourage deleting or merging impractical categories. For example, George H. W. Bush contains many categories that are rather superfluous. I have nominated three categories from George H. W. Bush for deletion, and all of the votes are currently in favor of deletion. This demonstrates that George H. W. Bush contained some categories that were impractical. Hank Aaron was another great example. Hank Aaron's article contained over fifty categories before a vote on 2006 November 19 led to merging multiple categories related to his play in the All-Star games. The template would serve a purpose beyond asking the editors to remove redundant categories; it would also ask the user to help clean up the category system.
I also disagree on whether having too many categories is bad. At the moment, the categories in George H. W. Bush appear as 12 lines of unorganized blue text in my web browser. This blue mass of links is difficult to read; it would be unacceptable in most other electronic documents. Some of the superfluous categories need to be removed just to make the section more readable. Dr. Submillimeter 16:15, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Phonology template

(This is my first time using this page, so I apologize if I'm doing something wrong) I am requesting a navigational template for all the articles dealing with the phonology of different languages (i.e. English phonology, Arabic phonology). I'm having a difficult time finding the best template to base it on, though it would be somewhat similar to Template:Regions of the world. Considering the vast number of languages and the vast number of them which don't have phonology articles, it might be best to either create different templates for individual langauge families, or to include only the languages which already have phonology articles.
