Headache[edit]

Feel better soon. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 02:42, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

I hope you are feeling better now. Here is one more which you wanted Spittal Pond Nature Reserve, Bermuda. It is completed from my end.--Nvvchar. 09:12, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

I have also completed my inputs (all that I could find) to Balagansk. The submergence of the old town due to the dam and creation of the new town of Balagansk could be a nice hook text.--Nvvchar. 10:06, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

I suppose Corubal River is 5x now.--Nvvchar. 17:17, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

I have added my name only for the river article. Bermudian cuisine is also done. May like to nominate. Thanks.--Nvvchar. 18:25, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Sorry for not replying on the bridge article. The specific book reference 4 (Dayaratnam) is not displaying the pages now which I have used for the article. Hence, I have not been able to fix references to the tags you have marked. I am trying to find the old file. Hope to do it in a day or two, after I go and search in my office computer. I have not been keeping too well these days --Nvvchar. 09:41, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

In addition to Spittal Pond Nature Reserve, Bermuda this Paget Marsh Nature Reserve is also completed from my end. It could be double article hook for parks of Bermuda.--Nvvchar. 14:47, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

In addition to the above, I have also completed these three Symbister, Benie Hoose and Pettigarths Field Cairns of Scotland. I could not find any imgs for the last two articles. The pdf reference could give some sketches if their license is valid as the reference seems to be very old. -Nvvchar. 09:43, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

I have nominated Balagansk. I would request you to nominate Spittal Pond Nature Reserve, Bermuda and Paget Marsh Nature Reserve as separate articles. Today is the last day for the first article.--Nvvchar. 14:12, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
  • Including this Symbister House it will be four articles on the Scottish Islands. I could not find much to add on features of the house. You may like to add that and also fix a map.--Nvvchar. 17:14, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
  • Yes. At present, I am working on this Hungry Bay Nature Reserve as I saw this today. It will be done in an hour. Can you fix an img after that and nominate it as you started this article on 30th? I also added text to Spittal Pond Nature Reserve and made a note for PM on DYK page, though he has cleared it.--Nvvchar. 12:06, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Over to you now. Actually, the location is shown on the map in zone 4. I could not find any imgs.--Nvvchar. 13:08, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
I could not find one even when I did the other article of Bermuda.--Nvvchar. 13:15, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
  • I have fixed the map. You may like to edit and nominate. On Anakalang, I found this pdf reference here [1]. Lots of material fro the article. However, in the first page of this article there is clear directive that permission should be taken from the author even to cite it. Can you arrange to get it. --Nvvchar. 14:32, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Yes, of course. Can you suggest an infobox for the megalithc site of Indonesia? The tile may have to change as it is village or valley name.--Nvvchar. 17:20, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

It is 30,000 pounds and 16th century. I have corrected it.--Nvvchar. 14:17, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
I have fixed an img. I feel of these two Benie Hoose and Pettigarths Field Cairns, the latter one is probably not 1500ch. Pl check before nom.--Nvvchar. 14:55, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

DYK for Ten Hamadi[edit]

Lord Roem ~ (talk) 16:04, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

I added a cite to Derdour. It was at the end of the paragraph, but I know the DYK rules are picky. Aymatth2 (talk) 18:47, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

  • I don't think the choice of ref/sfn matters to any normal reader, but I prefer to be consistent and put all the sources in one place. I prefer sfn because I try to use book sources where possible, PDFs have pages too and sometimes, like the first Firmino article in the Cheche Disaster, even html articles have pages. I just have that habit. It could be because I start more bios of dead people like George Johnson (physician), mostly using books. Not important. Aymatth2 (talk) 21:35, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
    • I think what you are struggling to say is that this universally recognized best practice is even better, hard though that may be to imagine, than my old way of formatting cites. Aymatth2 (talk) 01:39, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
    • More seriously, the {{sfn}} style is common for scholarly books and papers. A footnote number in the text points3 to a short citation footnote like 3 Jones 1987 p.13. A back matter section lists all the sources referenced in the short citations alphabetically, with full details. The sources may be books, papers or articles, maybe even websites, TV interviews and other media. Wikipedia articles are not quite the same as scholarly books, but some of the same logic applies. If different pages of a source are cited in different parts of the article, it makes sense to cite the pages in short footnotes and put the full source definition in the alphabetical list. When there are several sources in the alphabetical list, it is visually cleaner if all the sources are there. Having some source details in the "Citations" section and others in the "Sources" section looks messy.
Putting the source details instream to the text is perhaps a bit easier for the editor, and the person checking citations avoids a few mouse clicks with the hybrid approach, but I am more concerned with how the article looks to the general reader. And I find that once you get into the habit of using the short footnote style it becomes very easy and natural. I churn out a lot of content and it does not slow me down. Pushing the source definitions to the back makes the marked-up text much less cluttered, and that makes it easier to concentrate on improving the language and flow of the article. Aymatth2 (talk) 03:43, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
  • I have the [book refmaker http://reftag.appspot.com/] bookmarked too - you pointed it out to me. Very useful. My sequence is to copy just the {{cite book}} part of what it generates and paste it below the text I am editing, then put the {{sfn|lastname|year|p=nnn}} template into the text, maybe copy-pasting the author last names, then move the {{cite book}} template to the list at the back. It takes very little extra time. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:44, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm about to officially throw a "You cannot be serious" type rant at the umpires... Dear Dr B,

I notice you've done a lot of work putting up articles from the old Jewish Encyclopedia, which is great, but in future if you could use the article= and url= parameters in the {{Jewish Encyclopedia}} template that would be one step even better, so that as the WP articles start to mutate and evolve, it then makes it easier to see exactly what may and may not reflect the JE original.

Creole House[edit]

  1. Male kings etc. — I agree, but I don't see the point of doing anything, since it will basically just be fighting. The mindset that brought us "Male actors" is the same anti-WP:UCS attitude that's brought us mandatory dashes when everyone else uses hyphens.
  2. On Template:Did you know nominations/Creole House, why do you prefer the first hook? Just curious.
  3. Is it okay if I modify the first hook by moving "in Illinois" to after "settlement"? Wanting to be sure that people don't think I've cheated by getting approval for something else.

London location maps[edit]

Hi, I noticed the Template:Infobox UK place/local change following your discussion at User talk:WOSlinker#London location maps, but I think that it may have unintended drawbacks, because many London articles will be about places that are much larger than the location map marker if a borough-scale map is used. List of hotels in the United Kingdom[edit]

Hello Dr Blofeld

As you requested I have added all the Hotel articles I have contributed so far. I have also contributed three articles about three hotels in the North Norfolk that are now Defunct, Two of which have now long been demolished. I have not included these on the list as I presume the list is target only at going concerns. Can you confirm this is the case? If you wish me to add them to the list I will do this once we have some sort of consensus on this issue. It may be worth adding a section to the list specifically for defunct and demolished Hotels. I do intend to add several more Hotel articles about some of North Norfolk’s Grand Victorian Hotels which were demolished by short sighted planners in the post second world war period.  stavros1  ♣  07:18, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

The Special Barnstar[edit]

Yo, Dr. B - thank you for the barnstar! I think this is now my third "Dr Blofeld Barnstar", but it is always an honour and a privilege to receive a shiny thing from such an eminent villain wikipedian. There are actually a few "Anglo topics" that I would like to get to GA, but I get far too easily distracted by lists of red links and random stubs that I stumble across (including some of yours!) My current concern is the number of red links in List of African writers by country - African literature has seriously poor coverage here. Happy Tsagaan Sar[edit]

Happy Tsagaan Sar!
According to Mongolian tradition, on Bituun you are to eat until you are full, which will prevent you from being hungry in the coming year. Have these hearty buuz. Also note I read that to mean that you should also drink until you are full, so you will not be thirsty in the coming year. kelapstick(bainuu) 21:11, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Happy Tsagaan Sar indeed!♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 22:19, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

History of Gibraltar[edit]

Hi Dr. B, I've completed a first draft of History of Gibraltar - it's currently just over 9,000 words. I will be going through it to polish it up and add extra references where necessary, but could you please (1) let me have some feedback and (2) add any links where you think they might be pertinent? I've got a GA reviewer lined up and I intend to submit it for GA next weekend, with a view to getting it to GA status by the end of this month and to get it through FAC by the end of March, in time for the 11 April tercentenary of the Treaty of Utrecht. Feistritz an der Gail[edit]

This is an interesting article Feistritz an der Gail in Austria. This web site [2] with many internal links has to be properly fitted in the reference even though I have tried to do it. The infobox also needs to be fitted with an img of the town and different map. It may also need some more text. Also please add to this Stone circles of Junapani as it has to nominated to tomorrow.--Nvvchar. 12:17, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Dr. B, Do you think the non-free image of the Princess Diana wedding dress you uploaded, and used on Wedding dress of Lady Diana Spencer, could be used on David Emanuel (fashion designer) too, to illustrate his iconic design? David Oppenheim (clarinetist)[edit]

Hi Dr. Blofeld-- Can you please create a stub for David Oppenheim (clarinetist)? He's needed for this article; and a disambig page or hatnote is also needed. Ceuta anniversary[edit]

Good work on Ceuta. I noticed that there's a very important anniversary coming up - on 14 August 2015 it will be exactly 600 years since Spain captured it. I think that would be a worth a featured article on the day, don't you? Prioryman (talk) 19:32, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Would be good, but its about 30 months away! Something to keep in mind anyway, lets try to get History of Gibraltar there first.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 19:35, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
There's nothing like thinking ahead! :-) I was planning the triplet currently at WP:TFAR#March 25 nearly two years ago. But yes, let's do things one at a time. Once it's out of the way, another possibility for a related FA might be Algeciras, which I notice has a Spanish FA counterpart. The city's annual festival is being held in mid-June, which offers a possible target to aim for. It would be nice to have sister FAs for either side of the Bay. Prioryman (talk) 20:27, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
By the way, there are a lot of really good (and properly referenced!) articles about Algeciras and its vicinity on the Spanish wiki. There seems to have been a prolific and actually rather good local editor working on those articles. Prioryman (talk) 09:27, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

You read my mind, it was my intention to begin translating the history of Algeciras today! First though I have some more Ceuta articles to create.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 10:58, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

The guy that's done most of the hard work on the Spanish wiki in terms of Algeciras (and some on Gibraltar) is Falconaumanni. He's also made some decent diagrams re fortifications around the Bay etc. I invited him over to help with GibraltarpediA; he seemed quite keen but never got into it even after a couple of reminders... --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 12:07, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I've requested the history articles from Aymatth2, although you Prioryman might be interested in covering those red linked in Template:Algeciras. I'll work on the Ceuta red links this afternoon and start on the history of Algeciras later. If Walsriad is active again I might get him interested in even writing a History of Algeciras article..♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 12:19, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

What a lovely surprise to receive a barnstar! Amandajm (talk) 01:24, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the encouragement! I am aware that many of the architecture articles that I have written don't quite fit the usual Wikipedia pattern when it comes to picture format. However, when dealing with very broad subjects, I think one of the best ways to convey information is to illustrate it well. We have such a great collection to draw from on Wikimedia Commons, that with careful selection and judicious cropping comparisons can be made.
I'm a teacher, first and foremost. I want general readers to be able to come away from an article such Romanesque architecture feeling that they have a bit of a grasp on the subject, hopefully good enough to be able to look at their parish church and observe that the round chancel arch with the chevron carvings is Norman and that all the pointed arches are Gothic.
Some years back I put up several articles for FA. I was inexperienced enough to put forward several simultaneously and found the process really awful! Since then I have concluded that the GA process is almost as fierce as the FA process. Do I want to go there?
Amandajm (talk) 11:23, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

geography of Deheubarth[edit]

Do you have an idea on this?--Doug Coldwell (talk) 14:38, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Define what you mean by "what was the geography", the boundaries?, the topography?, the area which it is today?♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 15:20, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

The topography in 1270, which may be the same as today. Interested mostly of what it may have looked like in 1270 (land features).--Doug Coldwell (talk) 17:44, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Pretty similar to today, except for erosion and other factors.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 18:10, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Grassy or not grassy? Swampy? Sandy? Rocky? Pasture?--Doug Coldwell (talk) 22:33, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Dinosaurs, wooly mammoths? It was 1270 not 1270 million years BC lol. I doubt in 750 years a landscape would naturally alter much except through human interference. I'd say the biggest natural factor would be freeze thaw weathering of rocky and cliffs which would change quite a lot but the general landscape wouldn't have changed naturally that much at all. The biggest human-induced changes would be farming practices and towns of course. Would be nice to get hold of some photographs from the 13th century just to see! ♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 22:41, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
In this document it says A major campaign to control Llywelyn ap Gruffydd of Wales began in 1277 and lasted until Llywelyn's death in 1282. I'm not familiar with Wales, so don't know its land features. I'm getting the impression the land controlled by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd was perhaps mountainous? It perhaps then was not("is not") a grassy area?--Doug Coldwell (talk) 00:03, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
From User:Itsmejudith she has given me some additional clues at the Reference Desk that perhaps in this time period it was more woodland and heathland than today. That would make it an area of little grass I am guessing. Thanks for your input. It gets me thinking. Boy am I glad to see you are back at Wikipedia editing. Now I feel things are back to normal. You had me scarred there for a minute. We don't want to lose you.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 14:01, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Oh undoubtedly there was more woodland back then but I don't know enough about that area of Wales as it is to comment! I know a fair bit about my county and I believe it was mostly fields even by the middle ages with sparse areas of woodland. ♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 15:35, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Rosie is having some problems with the internet connectivity at her place. Can you please post the two Cameroon articles and the Poe Museum articles on DYK? Another two fort articles ( San Felipe and Santa Barbara) of Spain deals with the Treaty of Utrecht and the war with France --Nvvchar. 17:30, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

There is an img of 1915 here [4] Can you transfer it to wikicommons for article on Battalion Park.

Oh! Real fast. Thank you. I will fit the img in the article which is now complete from my end and fully more than 5x expansion.--Nvvchar. 13:18, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

I added lot of text to this Protected areas of Cameroon. But it is a huge task to cover all 20 parks and reserves in the next two days for DYK.--Nvvchar. 14:21, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
  • I have completed my inputs to all the National parks of the Protected areas of Cameroon. It took 12 hours. I feel it should not be termed a list. It is quite a large article now. I have also added to Sealyham House and Lascaris Battery and can add more if you find the references are acceptable.--Nvvchar. 18:23, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

New message[edit]

Hey bud! I hope you don't take this the wrong way but I've removed some of the things you added to Kareena's article. Priyanka Chopra's article was dinged during its FAC for having too many changes since its nomination. I am trying to keep the article as stable as possible and have only made the changes that were requested on the FAC. Plus the information about her size 0 being envied in the Indian media is irrelevant. -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 01:04, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I know that Kapoor's weight is well-covered in the Indian media; for that reason in the "Public image and character" section, this is stated: "Kapoor's private life has been the subject of media attention in India, with frequent press coverage of her weight and relationship with actor Saif Ali Khan." As for article expansions during FAC, numerous editors visit the article and base their decision according to what they see at that point of time. For that reason, I was told that you should keep it as stable as possible. -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 23:27, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

My understanding about this battle (apparently very famous) that occured on 14 May 1264 is that it involved Prince Edward, William de Valance, earl of Pembroke, and John de Warenne, earl of Surrey and Sussex; the Richard, 1st Earl of Cornwall with his son Henry; and the third by King Henry III of England. That would make 5 main commanding officers, correct? Is there a source that shows the battle line lengths? I do know that Prince Edward chased Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester for 30 furlongs (about 4 miles). Thanks for any enlightening you can give me on this.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 13:44, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

No. I'm currently living in Madrid. Sorry --Ecemaml (talk) 14:45, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

No, your work is highly appreciated. What I can't understand is Prioryman insistence in (ab)using the DYK mechanism. The only way I can see to go on using DYK properly for articles that are not Gibraltar related is just uncoupling the non-Gibraltar articles from the Gibraltarpedia scope. But, at the moment, what I can see any willingness to do so and therefore I complain. Do you need the Gibrlatarpedia framework for writing articles about Tarifa or Ceuta? I don't think so and I'm not able to understand why it should be done otherwise. Don't take me wrong. I'm have nothing against you (or any other of the members of the Gibraltarpedia project). I've reviewed many of your articles and do a lot of work related to the Gibraltar pictures in commons. But I can't support Gibraltarpedia as a concept as, at the end of the day, there is a paid effort coming from a Gobernment with the aim of using Wikipedia (at least that's the way I see it). Sorry to have made you feel uncomfortable. I didn't want to do it. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 22:56, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

What to do?[edit]

As you may know, I have been improving the Priyanka Chopra article, and it is now up for FAC. I have this impatient and enthusiastic "helper" that is asking everyone to look at the FAC, as they did here. I asked him not to do any more of this, but he has now gone and sent about 30 messages to senior editors about the FAC. All of this while destabilizing the article by continually adding things, including things that were deemed inappropriate by a number of editors. I don't know what to do about this editor; you have seen their work on the Kareena Kapoor FAC as well. Do you have any suggestions to help save these nominations? BollyJeff | talk 16:40, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Mmm, tell him to cool it a bit?? I think he probably means well but articles definitely need stability before nomming. I'd ask him to revert his messages and patiently await comments. Brian has indicated it meets FA quality so stick with it and see what happens with speaking to him.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 16:45, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Lascaris Battery[edit]

Done; needs coords and most definitely needs looking at by someone who understands artillery specs and related terminology. The first pic in the German article would be lovely to have; is there a licence problem migrating it to Commons? The map too, to a lesser extent. I did not search de.wikipedia for an article on St. Peter's Bastion, but the article on Upper Barrakka Gardens suggests it should be St. Peter and St. Paul. Llywelyn the Last[edit]

The term "purchase the homage" is not a term used in the United States, so I don't have a understanding of this. Can you give this to me in layman's terms? In the above article it says: ...and could if he wished, purchase the homage of the one outstanding native prince - Maredudd ap Rhys of Deheubarth - for another 5,000 marks. What does that mean (in layman's terms)? Thanks!--Doug Coldwell (talk) 12:07, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Algeciras[edit]

Thanks. :~) But Algeciras is a bit too close to Gibraltar. There are not many relics of the siege because the old city was destroyed, but there is a pile of stones that could be a tourist attraction. Any suggestion for user:TMLutas?[edit]

Hello Doctor, User:TMLutas contacted me for help after I acted to prevent a speedy deletion request for an article he had created. He has been getting some flack for creating a series of stub school articles, and he asked if I had any recomendations on how to proceed. I didn't have any wisdom to offer, but I thought of you as someone who might have insight and experience on the subject...--Kubigula (talk) 05:03, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Kubigula beat me, I had intended to contact you, too, as you have ample experience with mass-creating articles. Please also see the discussion I had with TMLutas on my own talk page for some of the problems that his articles have. I got off a bit on the wrong footing with him, so it's probably better if another editor attempts to help him. Thanks! --Randykitty (talk) 12:25, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

DNB[edit]

Dr. Blofeld, I would like you to please reconsider importing pages from Wikisource (from the DNB) to here, or otherwise to check all numbers and dates before posting them here. They often have major problems with those, even when "proofread". The article Thomas Bates (stockbreeder) has multiple problems in this regard: 1776 should be 1775 (now the article gives two different years of birth!), the article twice gives "I800" where it should be "1850" (note also the I for an 1), "4,558l. Is." again has a I instead of a 1. In a number of instances, £ is given as l., which is not really obvious (at least not for non-GB readers, it may be more common in the UK instead).

I know that pages don't need to be correct immediately, and that others can correct it, and so forth, but when starting from known poor transcriptions (like I do as well for my articles from Bryan), extra care should be taken to correct such errors before importing them, otherwise we end up with articles that are worse than the original old sources they are copied from.

Perhaps avoiding pages that are only proofread but not yet validated on Wikisource may partially solve these problems? Fram (talk) 15:28, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Well, I believe its worth working towards them and that they're of more benefit to wikipedia started than not started, minor issues aside. Generally they need copyediting and checking, agreed. Perhaps we should create a Category:DNB articles needing proofreading. I have no intention of creating an uncontrollable amount, just a few every few days. You're welcome to help check them. ♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 15:34, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

The category would be a good idea, but can you please, before (or during) cration, control them for typos in years and numbers? Other ones are usually easy to spot, but seeing e.g. 1756 instead of 1755 will not give the impression of being a typo and may remain in the article for a very long time, and gives wrong information (what most typos don't do, the chance of having a typo that changes the meaning is much smaller in words than in numbers). Fram (talk) 08:14, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Any reason that you declared Thomas Willert Beale to be the son of Fram Beale? While I'm flattered, both the original and the Wikisource version have the correct "Frederic" instead. Anyway, Alexander Beith is another example, having 1809 instead of 1869. Removing the many now meaningless [q.v.] from the articles (see e.g. Martin Beckman) would also be an easy improvement. That article has "1081" for 1681, which is obvious, and 1686 for 1685, which isn't. It also has "E..N.", which had me baffled, but should be "R.N." (the latter just caught my eye, I mainly looked at the dates only). Please, just a few minutes more per article to avoid these recurring and otherwise hard-to-spot errors would seriously improve these (and avoid that our articles are consistently worse than articles from 1901 they are based on). Fram (talk) 10:12, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Fram, seriously, you should know me by now that if you're going to play this chasing game, prompted by nothing but your anger that Flat Bastion Road passed GA then you should know that I can get pretty unpleasant to be around. I haven't heard anything from you in months and it seems a rather strange cooincidence that suddenly you start hounding me, removing content from even an article on a cigarette brand, then criticizing everything about my DNB articles and ordering me about. You're picking on the wrong sort of guy to boss about about, no kidding, I can be a complete prick if somebody is getting on my tits, I think you know this. I will scan the articles and remove any dubious figures, I did this actually on some last night and if you want I can remove the Q.v, minor issue, no extra problem. I have no problem with constructive criticism, but the lordly way in which you've confronted me over this in the wake of you being upset over the Flat Bastion Road article strongly gives me an indication of the sort of character you are, and petty grouches with a grudge don't last long around me. I will try to check for errors for a minute or so, no problem, but please don't make out as if I'm creating some major crime in importing these and please don't come here upon every trivial error you see and lecture me about it. I don't have to bother creating anything or doing bugger all on here. I may overlook minor glitches in the articles, so if you are interested in helping proof read them without snarky edit summaries and lectures I'd be genuinely grateful.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 10:36, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

I noticed your DNB contributions during new page patrol, actually (I deleted new pages at 15.13, 15.38 and 15.39, and inbetween commented on your DNB pages at 15.28). And I have been correcting things in articles you created before the Flat BAstion Road GA as well, I received a co-credit at DYK for e.g. my work on Monegros Desert. As for the cigarette brand, I "removed content" in the form of correcting your mistakes without making any fuss about it. I normally don't bother you if the problems or errors are one-off, I only contact you if they are more repetitive or systematical, like with the DNB articles. But apparently I'm bad if I discuss things here, and I'm bad if I simply improve things without discussing them here. Tough luck. And what "snarky edit summaries"? I don't think I made any. And I'm not contacting you about "trivial errors", I'm contacting you about things which are rather easy to spot for the article creator, but are likely to remain in the articles for a long time if he doesn't. When I contact you about such things, I may add rather trivial things like the [q.v.], which aren't worth bothering you with on their own, but which can be easily taken along when looking for the less trivial stuff like wrong dates. Fram (talk) 11:08, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

I appreciate your concerns about some of the glitches, and yes, as I said I'll try to spot them, but you must admit the circumstances in which you've decided to approach me is rather a coincidence. That it was you who approached me having just the other day expressed your disgust that that Flat Bastion Road is a poor quality article and now you confront me over this. I'll create that category for you, as I do think you are being partly constructive in addressing this issue. I just wish you wouldn't let certain articles get to you as much as they have, you're better than that surely. ♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 11:14, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Much better :-) Yes, most of us can get too agitated over these things, and I should have ignored the FB Road GA probably (I believe that my comments were correct, but that doesn't mean that my expression of them had any probable chance of having any effect). As for Daniel Bellamy, the younger: I don't think there is a need to remove the quarto and octavo indications (neither is there a need to keep them, it's the kind of thing that old encyclopedias deemed important but which are nowadays restricted to purely bibliophilic catalogues). But I do notice that that page, on Wikisource, isn't even proofread (so much more prone to have errors still), and indeed still has year errors like "1708?" instead of "1768?" and a wrong date of death (should be the 15th instead of the 16th). Fram (talk) 12:27, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
I'm looking at the dates, if I spot any out of chrono order I'll correct. Wrong birth dates can't be helped, but I think all entries started should be checked by somebody and further sources added of course. But somebody has to do the raw work and I believe they're work starting.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 12:34, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
Well, I believe that wrong dates can be helped, by looking at the original source (not the Wikisource transcription) for each and every number included in the text, since these are most often wrong. Of course, if the DNB is wrong, then we will be wrong as well, that's not the kind of error I am talking about (but I notice you corrected such an error on John Belleman, which is of course even better). Perhaps, instead of creating them in the mainspace, they can be created in some holding area for the DNB project, where they can be moved from after the basic checks and corrections have been done? Just an idea... Fram (talk) 13:06, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
E.g. Richard Bellamy (singer) was not even proofread on Wikisource, and now lists the year of death (article and category) as 1800, while the text goes on to explain what he did in 1801 and that he died in 1813. The "1800" from the intro is also given as 1813 in the DNB, so just a Wikisource problem. Fram (talk) 13:11, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
Just being dead isn't a reason for not doing things --Demiurge1000 (talk) 13:40, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
Reality though is next to nobody is going to do it and it's probably more productive to get them started and try to spot the errors as they come.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 13:25, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
I'm rather sceptical about the latter part (nothing personal, it's a general feeling, also based on experience with other editors who made many DNB articles) ... Fram (talk) 14:31, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
That's skeptical, not sceptical ahem. Why? With you around, our resident Wiki Hawkeye, we should be able to even decipher what colour panties George Anne Bellamy wore on her deathbed.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 14:37, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
No idea if you were serious or if I miss a joke here, but "sceptical" is the British for "skeptical" American, apparently. I don't have a fixed preference for either, but I think I usually apply British English in my writing (colours for colors and so on). However, I couldn't tell you of the top of my head whether "isation" or "ization" is the British suffix (I would go with the "isation" version). As for the case at hand: I am flattered, but the trouble is that I have don't believe that having two people going over the same articles is really the best way to proceed if one can do the same with less effort (than the two persons combined, that is). I like to write articles, as do you. While I may give another impression, I am less enamoured of going over other people's contributions to clean up after them: I prefer, when a problem is recurring, to explain the problem and possible solutions, so that the same problems no longer occur (or at a much reduced rate at least). It's the old adage of (paraphrased) you can give someone a fish every day, or a reel once (although in this case, the workload division is clearly far from that extreme; it's more like giving you a worm to fish with every day, or artificial bait once). Fram (talk) 15:32, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
I'm pulling your leg Fram, we're all Americans here ahem, I think you take things too seriously. Yes, whatever is most efficient is sensible but you can't grill every editor who happens to make an error. I think I'm doing a half decent job with importing the articles and am spotting the more obvious errors, thankyou for your concerns.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 15:43, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

I was going to say in response to your note on my talk that it looks as if it's almost all there now :-) The only thing I notice (other than variable spelling of "launderette", which might garner more understanding as the US "laundromat") is "mop table" - Wischtisch is a bit of a puzzlement to me, but it's definitely not "mop" - I suspect it's "wipe" and that they are thinking of pre-treatment, whereas I think of it as a folding table. Maybe safest to just say "table" '-)
Poor Gloria-Theater :-( If no one else does, I'll expand that.
Re: nomination, why not use the war rooms?
Have you seen what I'm working on when chaos permits?--Yngvadottir (talk) 13:04, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Umm, mops and so on are kept in a cupboard, not on a table off the floor; and Wisch is from the verb, so it's a table for --ing on (either mopping, which just doesn't fit, or wiping). Or at furthest a table that needs to be wiped down frequently :-) Poor little theatre is on my mental list now, but 2 huge sections of current project need doing first and you would not believe the chaos. --Yngvadottir (talk) 13:12, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

DNB peeps[edit]

Great work in moving the wikisource people over. I'm having a pleasant time footling over some of the new pages, adding wikilinks, copy-editing etc. A couple of recent ones turned out to be dupes, though -Elizabeth Ogilvy Benger and Hugo de Benhyem. It's worth doing extra checks, I find, for women and medieval types, where the DNB name form may well not be that most common today. Dsp13 (talk) 14:21, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, I am looking but ones like Hugh de Benin are not easy to find, I'm not convinced "Benin" is more legit than "Benham"!♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 14:25, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

me neither - the ODNB has 'Hugh of Bennum' which (not knowing anything myself about the chap) I'd be inclined to use.Dsp13 (talk) 17:29, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Sealyham House[edit]

Looks like this article is coming along pretty good now.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 23:48, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Yes, not bad, thanks for your help!♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 08:55, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Great deductions[edit]

User:SarahStierch has an article? And User:Orangemike (Michael James Lowrey) nominated it for deletion? *Gosh*, I didn't know. Thanks for updating me. Cheers, ☯ Bonkers The Clown \(^_^)/ Nonsensical Babble ☯ 03:36, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Yeah I know, unfortunately others night not share you sense of humour. Probably some "delete, non notable" angry people will turn up, I think I'll vote keep just for kicks...♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 08:39, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

DYK for Torre de los Adalides[edit]

Carabinieri (talk) 16:03, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

That article says "... the municipal limits of the Algeciras peninsula on the shores of the Strait of Gibraltar. Algeciras is now developed as a cosmopolitan city with a bridge linking the two banks of the Strait". Is bridging the straits of Gibraltar some evil genius plan you are cooking up? Last time I was there, there was no bridge. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 22:04, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Pauline Koner - nomed it. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:28, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Please see Waza National Park. If you could add some more text (it is still not 5x) it could be nominated on DYK.--Nvvchar. 13:12, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
I have found some text to add. Should I wait to add it till somebody reviews it? I should be able to finish the temples articles by tomorrow. Please see the comment below the Malta article. Please reword the hook I suggested. I have nominated Sylham House two days late. Hope it will be accepted.--Nvvchar. 10:21, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
