Too many references for one sentence

Several people commented in "User:CD17/sandbox/Water-filtered_infrared-A" The Teahouse that too many references for one statement might be a problem. I was wondering who might know where this sort of thing could be discussed. I went back in the history of one article where I have a sentence supported by five references. The basic information about a building was added here. With two more sources I was able to add the size and cost of a building here. And then I found another source which had a different size for the building, added here. The building was across from another facility of the company, but I didn't find the edit where I added that. It looked better to just put all five sources at the end of the sentence than to be jumping back and forth.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:29, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

In User:CD17/sandbox/Water-filtered_infrared-A, you have cited seven references for the uncontentious statement "These wavelengths would otherwise interact with water molecules in the upper layer of the skin and would cause a thermal burden to the skin, resulting in stinging or burning". I see no need to use more than one. At R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company#Facilities you used five references, apparently to support the statement "the company had plans for a new skyscraper downtown." I'm not User:CD17. And for the other article, no, I was referring to the headquarters that was not downtown. But if you look at each version in the history, you see that one source supported the basic information about both the headquarters that wasn't downtown, and the plans for the one that was. Okay, take a look now. Unfortunately, I don't currently have access to the two sources that gave me the building's size and cost, so we have two sources for its cost, since I don't know which one has that, until I can resolve that. Also, I don't know, since a can't access a third source, if that source says the building is on Reynolds Boulevard. Hi, Lionelt. I'm sorry, I've never created such a map, and I don't know how it's done. But I can see that that SVG file is well-constructed, with the outline of each state labelled with its two-letter code, so everything is easy to find and modify. If I wanted to make such a map for a different election, I'd take that one, rename it, and use a simple text editor (such as Notepad) to modify it. Maproom (talk) 08:23, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

French Submarine Turquoise

Hi, I see you have just moved the above page from a date defined to general title quoting standard naming. I think you are wrong - there were two french submarines called Turquoise ( see the link at the top of the page to other ships) and the correct method to dab them is to put the year of launch in brackets in the title. Perhaps you could review your actions and correct unless I am misunderstanding things Lyndaship (talk) 08:58, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Lyndaship. The name of the submarine was "Turquoise", so that should be the name of the article. But Wikipedia has articles on other things with that name, so dab is needed: this is adequately done by "(French submarine)" – in fact "(submarine)" would be sufficient. Wikipedia has no other articles on French submarines name "Turquoise", so no further disambiguation is needed.

If someone creates a Wikipedia article on another French submarine of that name, then yes, adding a year to the article title will be needed.

I see that there's a dab page French ship Turquoise, which links to only one article. When there's only one article, there's no need for disambiguation, so that dab page ought to be deleted. But maybe you or Llammakey is planning to create one? Maproom (talk) 10:01, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Sorry the page you refer to as a dab page is not a dab page but a ship index page Wikipedia:WikiProject_Ships/Guidelines#Index_pages and definitely needs to exist regardless of if articles for both ships have been created yet. Thanks! That leaves the main point though about the correct title for the article page. It should include the year, heres the relevant text from the ships page:

"Individual ship articles For ship article naming conventions, see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ships).

Articles about individual ships should have fully disambiguated titles, and include all information from the index page; in other words, don't assume that the reader has seen the index page."

Without the year stated if someone refers to the WWII french submarine Turquoise in an article it will link to the wrong ship. Can you revert your page name change please? Lyndaship (talk) 11:12, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Maps project

Hello! It was good to meet you in Oxford last month.

Looking back at our discussion (3 years ago!), you were right, I never did get back in touch with you.

The automatic categoriser and uploader that I was talking about then never got written either. But, as I was mentioning, things haven't entirely stood still. Since that time almost 30,000 of the 50,000 maps that were identified have now had georeferencing added (this progress page has a breakdown of what's left); of which I hope I am now getting close to uploading a first group of 5,000, that relate to the UK and Ireland, with some attempt to group them and provide some Commons categories, based on what the maps appear to be of, based on their scale and coordinates and bounding boxes from the georeferencing (see these preparation pages, generated by a script, for links and listings); as well as a further 600 maps that were split over two pages (corresponding pages). If you're interested (or want to suggest improvements), rough notes on some of the process can be found on this page.

It's still work in progress at the moment -- I'd like to do a bit of work on the Commons c:Template:Map description template first, and also need to investigate a few maps from this group that have already been uploaded independently. Plus there are still about 1000 of the 6000 that still need names input; and a slow but steady trickle of new maps still being added from the georeferencing. But I do hope quite soon now to finally start getting them uploaded and publicised.

I fear you are right, that most of what is uploaded to Commons simply passes most Wikipedia editors by, unless they happen to see one of the files in an article they follow. But I'm hoping that with perhaps a piece in the Signpost, and a sufficiently big group of files, then it might encourage some editors to look at the Commons maps and plans categories, to see if there's something that they would like to put into an article. I don't know whether images from the atlases you were talking about might fit in with that too? But they sound as though they would be nice to have on Commons.

Hello, it's good to hear from you again.

I won't be able to do much for a while – I'm out of the country from tomorrow until March 24th, and then away again in early April. But if you give me a list of maps on Commons that need something done, I can try to do it.

I have little grasp of categories. I used to try to add categories to maps I uploaded to Commons, but I noticed that most of the subsequent changes to them were more experienced editors removing the categories I'd added and replacing them by the correct ones.

The map template you link to above looks easier to use. I guess that for each map I look at, I add the template to its Commons page, with some of the fields populated. Will there be a way for users to search maps by the "name" field in the template, rather than by filename?

Facto Post – Issue 11 – 9 April 2018 The 100 Skins of the Onion Open Citations Month, with its eminently guessable hashtag, is upon us. We should be utterly grateful that in the past 12 months, so much data on which papers cite which other papers has been made open, and that Wikidata is playing its part in hosting it as "cites" statements. At the time of writing, there are 15.3M Wikidata items that can do that. Pulling back to look at open access papers in the large, though, there is is less reason for celebration. Access in theory does not yet equate to practical access. A recent LSE IMPACT blogpost puts that issue down to "heterogeneity". A useful euphemism to save us from thinking that the whole concept doesn't fall into the realm of the oxymoron. Some home truths: aggregation is not content management, if it falls short on reusability. The PDF file format is wedded to how humans read documents, not how machines ingest them. The salami-slicer is our friend in the current downloading of open access papers, but for a better metaphor, think about skinning an onion, laboriously, 100 times with diminishing returns. There are of the order of 100 major publisher sites hosting open access papers, and the predominant offer there is still a PDF. Red onion cross section From the discoverability angle, Wikidata's bibliographic resources combined with the SPARQL query are superior in principle, by far, to existing keyword searches run over papers. Open access content should be managed into consistent HTML, something that is currently strenuous. The good news, such as it is, would be that much of it is already in XML. The organisational problem of removing further skins from the onion, with sensible prioritisation, is certainly not insuperable. The CORE group (the bloggers in the LSE posting) has some answers, but actually not all that is needed for the text and data mining purposes they highlight. The long tail, or in other words the onion heart when it has become fiddly beyond patience to skin, does call for a pis aller. But the real knack is to do more between the XML and the heart. The Matthew Mess

Hi Maproom, long time no see, however despite the hiatus, the Matthew nondebate persists simply through people's unwillingness to check out the evidence. This I can only conclude because once seen, there is no doubt in anyone's mind how ridiculous the evidence offered on Darwin's wrongdoing. Now, please do not take any of the following as personal. It is not intended that way, just passionate exposition.

The fallacy being maintained here, is that Sutton has actually published valid scientific papers. He has not. None of his publications have been reviewed by anyone qualified to do so. You do not need me to tell you that, only your own eyes and brain to look at what he claims then look at the evidence. For example, Robert Chambers is the main claim he has, of an important individual to have seen Matthew's book, arising from the existence of what Sutton claims is a review by Robert Chambers in the Chambers' Journal. It is not. It is a copy of an article in the Quarterly from some months before. Regardless of who wrote the article, it does not place a copy of the book with the important evolutionary part therein into Robert Chambers' hands. What's more is that Robert Chambers was not even working on the Chambers' Journal at the time, nor is there any mention of Matthew or the ideas in his book in the Vestiges of Creation, Chambers' magnus opus. Finally, but in no way the last contradictory evidence that comprehensively refutes EVERYTHING Sutton has produced outwith Criminology since 2013, inclusive, is that a detailed examination (that is published in a high profile peer reviewed specialist journal) of the various versions of selection, a commonly held idea for its stabilisation of natural populations since Lucretius, finds Matthew added nothing new, and what he did cobble together would never work, as it inevitably always ends in an evolutionary cul-de-sac, hence his resort to Cuvier's catastrophism.

With respect, the reason I care about this is because it is our field of interest, three career professional academics watching a refined area of historical and scientific knowledge getting perverted by the whims of an overly egocentric amateur. You are giving him leeway simply because he squeezed his falsehoods into wikipedia under our noses using sock puppetry. That is not the way this is supposed to work. It is supposed to be set up by people who care enough to become experts, and maintained by those same knowledgeable individuals. Sutton spews stuff out without thinking nor checking. Look at the Matthew page, and his personal page (that he wrote anonymously about himself, btw -- just cross reference the origins of that page with the sock puppet record): if they were truthful, honest treatments, most of the material would not be there, because it is not publishable or not published in a reputable journal. Either, let us cover his falsehoods with links to our published refutation -- the equivalent of a RETRACTED notice across his papers -- or let us edit out the unsubstantiated, nonpeer-reviewed stuff, and leave there what is tenable.

As they say, 2 wrongs don't make a right: (1) Sutton pushes his falsehoods onto Wiki, a respected source of information -- which he hates btw. Have you read his venomous, personal and general, attacks at Wiki editors? (2) Wiki maintains his point of view through wanting to be PC and fair, and academic freedom of speech, even though no-one at all, from within the evolutionary biological sciences who has been approached has given it any credence. A fault-ridden, conspiracy theorist, with a fantasy to push, and his main supporter in perpetuating the fallacy, is Wikipedia, whom he loves to hate. Regarding Academic Freedom of Speech -- research has to be scholarly to qualify for that protection.

It is not acceptable for anyone to defend his "work" unless they have fully tested his claims. If you haven't laughed out loud in disbelief at how stupid his errors, within half and hour of checking, give me a shout, Jfderry (talk) 14:43, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

I don't want to defend Sutton. He's wrong and you're right. In the past I've removed a fair bit of his stuff from the article. My only criticism is of your actions in attaching references to your paper inside other references. That's not how we do references on Wikipedia. I won't object to your citing your own work (though technically you shouldn't), and I certainly won't object when you delete or refute Sutton's stuff. But please do so in ways that follow Wikipedia's rules. References belong in the text of the article, not in other references. Maybe I was wrong to revert all of your recent edits; but I wanted to make sure I got all the "nested" references.

Dear Enigma666rock,

If you have pictures you don't want made public, there would be no reason to put them in a private message. I assume from your question that you don't live near her, so you can't provide a better picture of her just by visiting her with a camera. You could use the picture to the right, which has been on Wikimedia Commons for six years without problems. In it she's not really facing the camera, but it's better then the current picture.

At present, most of the content of the article has been written by you and by Amira herself (or someone using her name). That is why I added the tag. The best way to get it removed would be for people having no connection with Amira to contribute to the article. I would try to help myself, but I know nothing about singing or choral tradition, and would have difficulty finding relevant sources.

Hi Whispyhistory, I am well and trust that you are.

I used to keep up with your impressive rate of article creation, by finding all your recent articles on your user page and copy-editing the ones I hadn't looked at yet. I could recognise the new ones because my browser showed the link in a different colour. But after some weeks, the ones I had already looked at started to be "not visited recently" and coloured the same as the new ones, so I couldn't reliably tell the new ones from the old. After that I stopped copy-editing them.

I'm happy to resume, but could you please help me by providing a list of your new, uncopy-edited, articles? It could be on a subpage of your user page, or of mine (I've created User:Maproom/medical). Your edits are welcome only you have to understand that some users here lack arguments. For example, they try to push a POV on so called National Team of Football of Szeklers with location in Romania, but this one was initiated in Hungary (so another state) and 2nd it was made by private persons as a company or NGO but in any case not national. They may call it how they wish, even the MOON association, National MOON Team of football of Szeklers but in no case this is not a national team in Romania. I see. Me neither. But. Look the situation here. It is this article: [[3]] Székely Land national football team This one is the heart of all disagreements with the other editors. Because this is not a national team of football people based on ethnicity as the name implies, so, it's not like the French national football team or Italian national football team. This one was initiated in 2014 in Budapest by a guy. Now, he can name his team as he wants, but the article should state clear what it is and it is not. Even if the name is misleading, the article should inform correctly the reader not to understand that there is a nation, a land, a country and has a national team of football. User Borsoka and User Fakirbakir and User Kiengir are Hungarians and they support very much the misleading article, because they think they help Hungary in doing this. Commons upload

Hi, re this comment: if it's the Commons upload wizard that's bugging you, do what I do - skip right past it. You can do this by going to Preferences → Gadgets and disabling "UploadWizard: Upload Wizard. Especially useful for new users." - disabling this will alter the destination of the "Upload file" link in the left margin. Alternatively, the direct link to the old upload page is c:Commons:Upload.

In that, the ones that I mostly use are:

• It is from somewhere else
• It is entirely my own work
• Already know the license, and its copyright tag? Go directly to the main upload form or its experienced variant.
• Already have an {{information}} template ready? Use the basic upload form.

the last two being under the "Upload form for experienced users" subheading. Note that "Go directly to the main upload form" in the second list is exactly the same as "It is from somewhere else" in the main list. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:11, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Redrose64, and thank you for your interest. No, you've already shown me how to ignore the wizard and use the upload form directly, and I've used it successfully a few times. I'll explain what's bugging me now.

Last Friday, October 26th, I visited a friend András Bereznay at his apartment in London. He wanted help in uploading some map images he had created to Commons. These had been commissioned by another Wikipedia editor (maybe Borsoka, that's just a guess) for payment. I guided him through the upload process, using license cc-by-sa-4.0, apparently successfully. A few days later, the images were still there, and he hadn't received any complaints from Commons admins about copyright or anything else. He was paid by the editor who'd commissioned them.

Early this week, he emailed me to say he'd found an error in one of the maps, File:Map Origin of Transylvanian Watercourse Names.jpg . He sent me a corrected version and asked me to upload it over the erroneous version, because he didn't know how to "upload new version". I did so.

This morning, Commons editor Jeff_G. marked the image for deletion, and posted templates to my and András's Commons talk pages saying "This media may be deleted" [sic]. Neither of us has any idea why he did this, or what he expects us to do about it. I've made a token attempt to discuss it with him at his Commons talk page. But I've encountered such behaviour from Commons admins before (see my Commons talk page), and I don't expect to get an intelligible response from him. Normally I'd just shrug and put it out of my mind; but on this occasion András has accepted payment for his work, and is worried about whether he ought to return the portion of it that applies to this image. András is very angry about what has happened, whereas I consider that all Commons admins are Turing test failures and directing any emotion at them is inappropriate. But I've now encountered such problems often enough that I'm no longer willing to invest time in struggling with the Commons upload process. Maproom (talk) 22:32, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

One thing to consider is this: has the image concerned been uploaded to another website, at any previous time? If so, this must be declared.

It seems to me that whilst it is OK for the image creator to upload the image as CC BY-SA 4.0, it is apparently not OK for another person to overwrite that image with an image that is clearly very similar, yet still claim own work. In the {{information}} template, the |source= parameter contains {{own}} but perhaps it should contain {{Private correspondence}} instead. Please read the documentation for both of these templates.

As I see it, the things to do would be for you to first revert the image to the original version, using the revert link at c:File:Map Origin of Transylvanian Watercourse Names.jpg#filehistory (first cell in the last row of the table). Then Andras Bereznay (talk · contribs) must upload the corrected version themselves, using the Upload a new version of this file link found immediately below that table. Finally, revert this edit.

Again I agree. I hadn't looked at the Stroud News article, I just accepted the word of the OP at the Help Desk. I can find no evidence for the existence of "a TV actor named Ben Nathan Jones"; Google doesn't find him, and IMDB doesn't list him. I wonder if providing misinformation about the picture was part of an attempt to get the article deleted. I'll restore the picture, and let the AfD run its course.
