Ottoman Empire

Glad to be a part of your WikiProject. I have already tagged all the sultans of the Ottoman Empire. I will help out when I can. I will mainly contribute by tagging articles, though.Burningview (talk) 22:33, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Keep up the great work

Hi I've recently noticed your excellent work on Hims and I've just checked out your contributions to Palestinian and Syiran related articles and they are excellent. Wikipedia needs editors like you for such places to address the problem of uneven bias and to work towards an even coverage of the world. I'm impressed. Keep up the fantastic work on these articles. It really is great to actually see some quality on articles related to these countries rather than the typical tripe or stubs that exists on most of the Asian and African countries. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:37, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

I may be evil in name but I am certainly not in reality. I believe that starting these articles with your pea soup coloured infoboxes and with references however short is a step in the right direction, plus the fact I am adding content to these. I am sorry you feel this way about me and that you have this master plan to have every article at like FA quality but one of our goals is the sum of all knowledge. A great of information about these places was missing entirely. Personally I think stubs that contain a bit of info are more useful than nothing at all, I'm sorry if I disrupted your plan. But these articles had to be started sometime anyway, rather it seems you expect them to be fully written immediately upon creation rather than allowing at leas a few days or weeks to fill them out. This is wiki and things can develop very fast, again thanks for your work, I feel the same about Hulcha's work. See my comment above back in April for proof I cam on your side so to soeak and want to see a full coverage of the middle east. I hope you can get your friend to reconsider. It is not an impossible amount of articles, that's all I'll say. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:48, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

History of Gaza

It will be the first thing I work on when I get back to editing. I'm in the middle of translating a scenario and the deadline is tommorow night, so if it can wait until after tomorrow, that would be great. Impressed by your work and grateful that you think I can be of service as always. Tiamuttalk 09:53, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

As you may have noticed, I made a few edits there and then got sidetracked elsewhere, as a result actually of your edit at Salbit. (Though I'm grateful for the sidetracking since I think a good article is developing as a result.) I will try to return to History of Gaza. Its such a long history that I find it a bit overwhelming at present, but I'll try to pitch in whatever I can when I have a chance to wrap my head around the whole thing. Happy editing. Tiamuttalk 09:40, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Big problem

I made a typo in a page move and it read Lydda Death Death instead of Lydda Death March. There is a controvery over the title but its appearing as a DYK tonight or tomorrow under that name. So until that passes, I think it should be listed there. I've opened a section to discuss name changes for afterward. Can you help me move it back to Lydda Death March? Because now its just wrong. Tiamuttalk 12:19, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Hey Al Ameer. Actually the only problem is that somehow there is a page entitled Lydda Death Death now. I've blanked it and redirected to Lydda Death March. Lydda Death Death should quite obviously be deleted. I must be groggy from a lack of sleep. If you have time to delete it, that would be good. It's a wholly uncontroversial action, unrelated to the current debate over the title name which is ongoing. Tiamuttalk 15:52, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Ayyubids

Hi, I've been watching, and the page looks good so far. I'd like to know more about what they were doing in Arabia; that area always seems to be neglected in favour of Egypt and Syria. Social history is always a useful addition - what was life like beyond the government? What did the general population do while the Ayyubids were in power? (This is the same sort of thing I've been trying to do with the Kingdom of Jerusalem article, although it's taking forever...) Adam Bishop (talk) 06:17, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Read previous discussion

Please before, reverting again read this previous discussion [[1]] and if the result of you discussion is to remove then we will remove. Two editors (BobaFett85 and Igorb2008) overrulled one on this issue (Fata-Hamas conflict) already and I agree with them. You can not remove edits previously established by other users without discussion and reaching a concensus first just so you can push your own point of view, Wikipedia is about neutrality, objectivity and reality. I can understand that you have a problem with this because you are Palestinian but everything has been backed up by references and fits into the category of the War on Terrorism since the US military has provided training and equipment for Fatah and the US government financial backing for Fatah to fight Hamas which is listed by the US as a terrorist organisation. The United States is backing Fatah, WoT is not just about US military against terrorists but also US backed-allies against terrorists, and this fits that category. Over at the article war on terrorism it has been clearly established that this war is regarded as a proxy war between the US and Iran as part of WoT. You said at the discussion for the campaignbox that Fatah nor Hamas considered the other as terrorists, they fought each other for other reasons. There's the thing, the US considers Hamas terrorists and is backing Fatah for just that reason and Hamas thinks of Fatah as too pro-US and is an enemy of Israel and Israel is a US ally. Again, please read the previous discussion. You can not just ignore the US's financial support, you said Who cares, that's not NPOV of you and you should know it since you are an administrator, you said to bring the point to the talk page, you should have discussed it first before with other editors before removing. I support BobaFett85 and Igorb2008 but I am not to go into a heated discussion with you now so if you provide proof that this has nothing to do with WoT than by all means remove it, but my problem is this - that you made the edit without discussing first.188.2.195.153 (talk) 21:10, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Ayyubids

Hey Ameer,

I would like to greatly apologize for how long it took me to respond to your message (combination of school, life, and extreme technical difficulties). I see you have done a great job revamping the Ayyubid article. I would be glad to contribute what I can if you are still looking for some collaboration. I have a term paper due in 2 weeks that will be consuming the majority of my time, but the focus overlaps on the Ayyubids. Also, would you like a "references in popular culture section" since it will be quite easy to find several. Look forward to hearing from you soon EvitoSol (talk) 00:57, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

"Legacy" is a good call. I've actually have access to some rare and excellent images of Ayyubid Mosques in Egypt as well as commentary on them which could fit in that general realm (actually been looking forward to an opportunity to use them). I'll see what digging I can do and hopefully will be ready for some solid composition in the following month. The Ayyubids are quite and extensive clan, but I have confidence in our abilities to catalog them. Good luck on that paperEvitoSol (talk) 03:48, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Re:Ayyubid Map

Marhaba Ameer, I will attempt to recreate the map using SVG editor. I had so much fun with the maps of Palestine :) --Fjmustak (talk) 02:20, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

How's this for a start? It still needs labels, a legend, and maybe some cropping to zoom in on the area of influence. Also, perhaps we can change the colors, or remove some of the surrounding kingdoms (or add some), etc.... It'll be much easier now that I have this part ready. Thoughts? --Fjmustak (talk) 06:08, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
It is now very easy to modify the map. I guess the reason Egypt is in yellow is to show the Fatimid state before Saladin's futuhat (conquests), the green arrows (I didn't copy those) show the direction of these futuhat. I also didn't add the cities/kingdoms to the map. Let me know what you want to keep and what you want to remove.

Here's the legend:

--Fjmustak (talk) 00:22, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

I haven't forgotten about this. Just got really busy. I've added the Almohads, and removed the Fatimids. But have yet to create the legend and to add the cities. If you have any more ideas for the map, please let me know. --Fjmustak (talk) 05:19, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
No worries man. I've been largely inactive myself (I was busy with the Arabic Wikipedia for a while, as well as with real life.) Best of luck on your finals. I'll And work on this map (and the one that you'll be sending me details on) soon. Regards. --Fjmustak (talk) 11:35, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Clarification

Hi, perhaps you can help me with this. This source that I am using to write an article on Hind al-Husseini says, "By 1995, Dar Al-Tifl had some 300 orphans. However, that number would halve following closure in the Gaza Strip, to where the orphans from there had to return, and increasingly within the West Bank." By closure means, the articles means that the residents Gaza Strip were closed off/not able to get in to Jerusalem, right? I am not well-versed in this subject, hope you can help me here. -Falastine fee Qalby (talk) 04:33, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply! Okay I will go with my initial thought. I started this article on Saturday as a spur of the moment thing, was unplanned and I didn't even know who Hind was until I read an article that day. The story is too inspirational. --Falastine fee Qalby (talk) 05:04, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Battle Of Latrun

Thank you very much for your interest in this article, and whatever help you can give us to make it better is very much appreciated.

May I ask, please, that you leave the references alone. This is simply because I know from experience this is a job best left to one editor. We know they need fixed but it's best left to one editor, I think (and it's not me!).

Any other edits, please do help out in making it better!

Thank you very much, shuckran. SimonTrew (talk) 02:20, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

I am very glad that with my translation this article has got so much attention. Together all we can make it featured article I think! Just a bit more work certainly to fix any facts I have got anything wrong, and the main thing left is to fix references. I can fix the spelling and so forth, but if everybody tries to do it at once one treads on each others' feet.

Kafr Saba

Thanks for the note. Presently, my priority is adding stuff from the Petersen-book to different articles when I´m on WP...I have the book on loan from an out-of-town library to early next month, so I have to use the time now. And yes: Petersen has *a lot* about Kafr Saba. Tell you what; why don´t you move it into main-space (I perfectly agree with you that it is a very important site!) ...then I will add Petersen-stuff, and anything else, when I can ( ...I´m throwing the ball back to you, here!! ;-) ) Kafr Saba is definitely DYK-material..please do start it. Also; I´m not certain about how much I will be around WP in the future...so don´t hesitate to start articles on *any* of the subjects I have made notes about on User:Huldra/Sources. I will be delighted if you do! Besides the 1948-villages, there are several buildings/bridges etc which seriously merit their own articles. E.g.take a look at Khirbet Al-Minya.. (I have collected material under User:Huldra/Sources#future_article:_Al-Tabigha.2C_District_of_Tiberias). Take care, cheers, Huldra (talk) 21:01, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

ok, fine, I´ll add the Petersen-stuff when you have it up and going. (And I still don´t know how to nominate any article for DYK, so I will definitely leave that for you..) All the 1948-villages I have collected notes on have information about them in addition to Khalidi and Morris (the only exception is Zayta, which I by mistake thought was mentioned in Stillman). The Al-Majdal, Tiberias is also an interesting place, (has a large commonscat!) ..please do feel free to start any of them! And I have looked (slightly!) at your civil war article. The Qays-Yamani conflict looks like a huge subject, if were to cover it comprehensively.... Regards, Huldra (talk) 23:17, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
I have been a bit delayed, but now I have been adding to Kafr Saba. Is it too late to nominate it for DYk? I have no idea as to how to do it, so I leave that to you...Cheers, Huldra (talk)
I´m rather unaccustumed to making "hooks"..but what about something like "Did you know ..that the shrine at Kafr Saba, for a millenium sacred only to Muslims, have after 1948 become holy to the Jews?" Anyway, I´m logging out now (it´s dead late!) -hope to be back later today..we should be adding more stuff about what happened in 1948 (Khalidi has a bit about it) Cheers, Huldra (talk)
Oh, btw, could you pls take a look at the template for the 1948 villagers? Now is seems a bit messy; perhaps if we removed the pictures, -and changed the background color so that it resembles the green info-box-color? Huldra (talk)
Ah well, never mind..I never counted my DYKs, so to speak ;-P ..but the place *is* facinating, and deserves more attention...much like Nabi Rubin, ..or Al-Nabi Yusha' (have you looked at the pictures on the Pal.Rem-site for that place? ..facinating!) Oh, and thanks for fixing the template...it lookes a bit better now, with a more co-ordinated coulor-scheme, me thinks..Cheers, Huldra (talk)

Jericho IV destruction date

The article currently gives the date of Jericho's destruction as 1200bc. This conflicts with every claimed date I had previously seen. I had previously tried to modify it, borrowing a source from the article "battle of Jericho." Two other sources for that article also giving a date around 1550 bc if you prefer those. The source given for the 1200bc date does not support the claim that Jericho IV was destroyed in 1200bc (I searched the document for all mentions of the date 1200bc, aside from a tick mark on the graph there was only one, and Jericho was not mentioned in the vicinity.)

Some articles seem to indicate there may have been a minor campsite after the 1550bc destruction of the city, but this article from the external links for Jericho makes it clear that it is the major settlement destroyed in 1550bc that is referred to as Jericho IV: http://www.biblicalchronologist.org/answers/bryantwood.php

Anyway, if this seems convincing, please revert to the edited version and cite whichever source seems best to you. Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.140.226.228 (talk) 05:00, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Hutteroth data

Hi, I am very stressed for time so I'll just give you the data here; feel free to use it as you wish. The population was not recorded person by person. There are are counts of: heads of households, bachelors, religious personages (such as Imams and Rabbis, not Christian priests apparently) and disabled people. The last two categories were present because they had different tax obligations. The formula Hutteroth uses to guess the total population is to multiply the total of heads of households and bachelors by 5.

Gaza (page 52): Muslims: (heads 456, bachelors 115, religious 59, disabled 19), Christians: (294 heads, 7 bachelors), Jews:(73 heads), Samaritans:(8 heads), Jundiyan:(141 heads). "Jundiyan" was a category of former soldier with a special tax status; they could be added to Muslims). Hutteroth guesses the total as 6000 (3rd largest in Palestine after Safad and Quds).

Bayt Lahm (page 121): Muslims: 9 heads; Christians: 278 heads. Very close nearby was Bayt Jala: Muslims: 8 heads; Christians: 239 heads.

Dayr Gassana (page 120): Muslims: 76 heads Bayt Rima (page 121): Muslims: 54 heads; Christians: 14 heads. Very close nearby was Kafr Tut (page 115): Muslims: 10 heads.

Hi, I saw you removed the images from the villages template because they were messing up the formatting. Can you tell me how it was messed up? The reason I ask is that I was just about to add images to another template, so it would be good to know what's going wrong. When I look at the version with images, I just see five small images along the top, but otherwise no change. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 21:20, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Ameer, I've added the Arabic scripts to the articles you sent. I'm also working adding a bit of info on Nabeel Kassis. He's currently the president of Birzeit University. (Maybe that should even go in the lead, as it is his present position as opposed to a politician). Salam. --Fjmustak (talk) 08:32, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

done. I need to fix the text on the map. I guess I'm using a font Wikipedia's converter doesn't recognize... --Fjmustak (talk) 02:09, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I am reviewing Izzat Darwaza for GA and have left some initial comments at Talk:Izzat Darwaza/GA1. In general, I think it is a fine article, well written, about an interesting man. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 15:44, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Dear Al Ameer son, you have edited Asmahan multiple times and it seems that you have the relevant resources to cite multiple facts. Could u maybe guide us on how to obtain such sources like page 23 in Asmahan's secrets which can't be viewed via preview in google. Many more sentences need referencing and your help is urgently needed.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 22:48, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

I meant pages 26-27. What did her father fear? Revenge for what? What did he do to fear revenge? I added a clarification note please replace it with better info.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 22:57, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

"Asmahans parents had separated in her early childhood." Is it seperated or divorced? And were they divorced/seperated because the mother stayed in Egypt? Did her father work for Committee of Union and Progress? How long and is this a reason why he fled fearing revenge? The word revenge isn't explained. Please again replace the clarification templates with the proper explanation, possibly quoting.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 23:29, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Works of Izzat Darwaza

Someone sent me this link from the world catalog: [2] I think you should list his major works. He is an important writer. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 01:39, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Im tired

of all this.. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 22:34, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for starting the article! I will add what I can from my sources. Would you care to start an article about the Abu Nabut Trough ? There is info at archnet, and a whole commons-cat, for starters... Cheers, Huldra (talk) 00:58, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, how is the Abu Nabut Trough -article comming along? ;) No hurry, but take a look at the Ruba Kana`an (2001) -ref. I added. Ms. Kana`an did her phD (in Oxford) on the wafq of Abu-Nabbut -I find it most readable in the downloadable .pdf-file -format, but you can also read it (sort of) online in .html-format. Lots and lots of interesting info there. And both Mahmoudiya Mosque and Abu-Nabbut is DYK-stuff, isn´t it?
But perhaps we could cut down a bit in the Vilney-myth sections, and add facts about his waqfs from Kana`an?
On another note; I see you (and Naab.) are removing lots of the gazaweb-pages. Though most are just copies from PalRem; there *are* also several links which has pictures of Palestinian costumes which I have *not* seen anywhere else. So I really would like to keep those... (you know me and Palestinian costumes;-) )...And I don´t see any harm in having the links on specific villages? Cheers, Huldra (talk)
  • I don´t think we should cut out Vilney completely....the direct link is fun (and should stay in, IMO). Just slim it down? And expand with the Kana`an (2001) ref instead.... I am sure we both agree that Kana`an is vastly more important here...Presently the article doesn´t even mention Abu Nabbuts wafq.
  • As for the gazaweb: the first I noticed was this Masmiyyeh (though unfortunately it does not say if it was from the "large" or "small" Gaza-village. However, neither PalRem-article have the picture. The Burayr dresses (like [3]) seem to have come from PalRem, although I did not know they were there...as they are quite "hidden" away, unlike at gazanet, where its the first thing you see: Burayr
  • I guess we disagree about ext. links, then. I would love as many (dedicated) links as possible!! But then I am definitely an inclusionist ....(except for BLP). I find the links for 1948-villages from Dr. Moslih Kanaaneh absolutely great...and I have added them wherever I can...
  • On another note: did you know that le Strange (1890) "Palestine under the Moslems" is now on the net, downloadeble! Which is wonderful news, IMO! I´ve added and direct link under Ramle..we can do that everywhere now. Cheers, Huldra (talk) 00:44, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Eeeeeek: I´m hopeless at finding hooks....I would just suggest something totally boring, like "DYK that Sabil Abu Nabbut is a nearly 200 year old Ottoman fountain that still exists in Jaffa?"
Anyway, I´m glad you started the article, and I´m really trying to tempt you (or Tiamut) to start, say, the article on Khirbet Al-Minya, (the Umayyad Palace, District of Tiberias. See User:Huldra/Sources) ...there is a LOT about it on the net...and a LOT in Petersen....if either of you guys start the article with what is on the net (we even have a picture over at commons!)...then I will add the Petersen-stuff..Cheers, Huldra (talk)

United Arab Emirates

Thats great, that you;re reviewing the article. I'll help in any way i can. --MoHasanie  Talk  19:46, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh, ok. Its good atleast you will review the History section. --MoHasanie  Talk  14:17, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, but I must confess I have not seen that film. I recall it was discussed, in some depth, in both the books on Palestinian films, (in Gertz/Khleifi "Palestinian cinema", see p 171, ff, and in the Dabashi-book.) Unfortunately, I do not have either of those books with me now (they were on loan from out-of-town-libraries) So I think I will pass this, for the moment...

On another note; I have thought of doing some serious expansion of Al-Nabi Yusha'; there is a LOT about the place in Petersen (2002). (And there are great pictures over at PalRem...) What I wondered is; I have scanned the pictures of the stuctures in the Petersen -book..can I upload them, under "fair use" (or whatever) to en.wikipedia? I tried to upload them to commons, but they were instantly deleted, and so I have now learned that you cannot have "fair use" there. The pictures are basically drawings of the structures by Petersen; extremely useful. Oh, and it is the same situation for a picture of Khirbat Jiddin. Khirbat Jiddin actually has loads of pictures (taken "in situ")...but the drawing, with overview, of the place would add greatly to the information, IMO. Anf *if* I can use them on en.wikipedia, I would need some instructions as to how to upload them here...as I have never done that, Cheers, from a technically challeged , Huldra (talk) 22:40, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Heyo

Heyo Al Ameer son,
You're more than invited to make conversation on the Land Day balance discussions but I do have to disagree with your assessment on Wikipedia articles' and neutrality/relevance in background. Remember that this is not an article in Al-Ahram (like the one currently in use on the article as a reference) that focuses only on the Palestinian grievances but rather an encyclopedia which is supposed to give all major perspectives into historical accounts (such as reasoning for land allocation). Anyways, I'd be happy to continue the article related discussions on the said article's talk page.
p.s. I'd appreciate it if you could talk with Nableezy into not following my edits and reverting them regardless of the inner content. We seem to clash once too many recently and its always a problem when an editor you tend to disagree with jumps on a page he never touched before just so he can revert you (repeatedly).
p.p.s. You think Darwish meant Hamas as well when he said Gaza will prevail (the above quote)? I sure hope so. Palestinians deserve better leadership... Israel could use better leadership as well :)
Warm regards, JaakobouChalk Talk 04:36, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Re DYK

I have left a message on the page of the article, because the DYK "fact" doesn't make sense to me as an architectural historian. It implies that the columns must have been cut up into square pieces (with great waste resulting) in order to use them as "building material". What exactly did your source write? I am certain that it must have been worded rather differently to the way it is worded in the article? Amandajm (talk) 13:49, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

As I suspected, it was worded quite differently in the original source. The introduction of the words "building materials" and "acquired from" put an entirely different meaning on a fairly straightforward sentence. The original authors obviously did not mean to imply that the entire building was constructed of Roman columns. They meant that the Roman columns (which are precious in themselves, because they are hard to make well) are a feature of the building. I have fixed it. Amandajm (talk) 07:12, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

DYK nominations

Hi Ameer. I noticed for a recent DYK submission, you credited yourself both as the creator of the article and its nominator. Please note that you can only do one or the other. Basically, one only nominates other people's articles, not one's own (although you can certainly submit your own articles). Otherwise everyone would get two DYK awards for every article they created. RE Hama Pictures

Will try to find some photos. In the mean time can you check the Norias of Hama, maybe copyedit some stuff to make it eligible for DYK? Yazan (talk) 07:34, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh and btw, we should definitely start an article about the Azem Palace in Hama. There's enough information for a solid stub. Yazan (talk) 07:39, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Couldn´t help seeing this: I have lots of pictures from the Azem Palace in Hama ...from when I was there in 2001. They are not very high quality (taken with a simple automatic Olympus mju camera I had at the time)...but it is a start. Wonderful place! (Of course: totaly rebuild after Assad razed the place...but you really couldn´t see that....I learned that later .....from reading "Pity the nation"). Anyway; if you guys start the article then I will upload the pictures I have from Hamas to commons (-- pictures with me in them!). (I don´t really have any from mosques in Hama, though). Cheers, Huldra (talk) 14:12, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Check: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Al_Azam_Palace,_Hama
Also expanded http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Hama a bit. Not great quality, but better than nothing, I hope. (& that´s all my Hama-pictures, except for the ones that Im in) Cheers, Huldra (talk) 19:19, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh; and while I´m at it: if anyone could start an article on the Hammam Yalbougha an-Nasry in Aleppo..it would be great. It is located just in front of the enterance to the Citadel, it is from 1491, last restored in 1985 (I´m quoting from my "Lonely Planet"-book from 2000.) Now, there might be finer hammams in Syria, (like Hammam Nur ad-Din in Damascus)...but this is, AFAIK, the finest, not only in Syria..but in the whole Middle East..which is open to women! Four days a week...and yes....I have pictures... (I met some Japanese women there; apparently Japanese women studying/working all over the Middle East meet in Aleppo because of this hammam!) It was an absolutely great place, Cheers, Huldra (talk) 22:03, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh and btw Huldra, I think it is because middle eastern Hammams are very similar to the traditional Japanese Onsens. Onsens are one of the most popular spa spots in Japan, and I've met many who've been in the middle east just to try them. Yazan (talk) 04:14, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
I understand, no worries. Unfortunately, I'll also be out for a bit, because of traveling. Good luck on the Nasser article! ;) Yazan (talk) 04:11, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Marhaba! One last request before you engross yourself in Nasser. Would you be able to take a quick look at Cathedral of Our Lady of Tortosa, maybe copyedit some stuff, for DYK?Yazan (talk) 16:05, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

some notes:

  • great work at the Azm Palace (Hama) (nice place, eh?)
  • just a hint; when you wikilink le Strange, 1890, why don´t´you link to the archive-version? I, at least, cannot read the google-version you link to at the Hama-page. If you link as I have done at the Jubb Yusuf, you can also link to the individual pages.
  • Lajjun: I found a reference to a picture of Lajjun in Petersen, 2002, p.201..made by Wilson in the 1870s. Following the link backward from this link [4]...I found this. Petersen discuss both the bridge and khan. If you upload the picture; I´ll add the text.
    • I don´t have a google-books account; perhaps that is why. I don´t have an account at the other place either, but there everybody can see it. So I think that is preferable.
    • And yeah, the picture is taken from "Picturesque Palestine" (the name says it all!) ..but Petersen discuss it, and heck, we are not really spoiled with pictures of Lajjun....
    • and congrats with GA on Ayyubid dynasty! Cheers, Huldra (talk) 23:29, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Arabic text

I saw your use of <big></big> on Tawfiq Canaan. I'd also seen this technique used on one or two other bio articles, which in fact gave me the idea of using a hidden comment to get round the problems with the wiki input editor. I rejected <big></big> for the following reasons:

  • as a general principle, it is better to separate formatting from other matters such as content, or in this case, an editing trick
  • there are probably better solutions than <big></big> - maybe a change in the default font, maybe a change in the mediawiki software, maybe a change to the {{lang}} templates (see below)
  • in any event, the right solution needs discussion and consensus

Yes, I do find the default arabic script too small to read, and I suspect several other editors do too. My solution is to use my monobook.css file to increase the font size. Works fine as long as the text is wrapped in one of the {{lang}} templates. This also has the advantage that the font size can be tailored to the user's requirements (my eyesight is not perfect, and neither is my knowledge of the language).

The disadvantage is that this solution is not available to IP editors or casual readers of Wikipedia (the vast majority). If the default font was altered to suit the latter group, I could adjust my .css file and everyone would be happy. Another possibility (which could be done in addition to changing the font for unregistered users) might be to add something to the "Gadgets" page under user preferences to make it easier for registered users to adjust their default font sizes for foreign-language scripts/alphabets/abjads.

Unfortunately, <big></big> makes the script ridiculously large. It looks ghastly under my setup. But more importantly, it will create more work when a proper solution is found.

--NSH001 (talk) 19:59, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

We (Badaghani, Ynhockey, and myself) were having a discussion about enlarging the default Arabic script a while back, but nothing happened. Instead we decided to use "big" setup. If you could change the default that would be great, because the current is too small to read. --Al Ameer son (talk) 20:04, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, unfortunately that's beyond both my knowledge and authority. ISTR there's a global .css file somewhere, which you as an administrator might be able to edit, and might (or might not) go some way to resolving the problem. I'd need to do some research first, and in any case I think such a change would require discussion and consensus somewhere (not sure where, though?).
P.S. I've bolded his name in the lead, which is fully compliant with the MOS, and should look better, I think. --NSH001 (talk) 20:34, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I'll see what I could do (probably little though), but although I have no real opposition to bolding, it has faced opposition in the past which was one of the reasons we started using the "big" setup. We should have a discussion somewhere (perhaps WP:ARAB or at WP:MoS) to find a solution. --Al Ameer son (talk) 20:37, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I think bolding of the article title in the lead is perfectly OK, as it's a requirement of the MOS anyway. I don't think it would be a good idea to bold text everywhere else in an article. --NSH001 (talk) 20:47, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Fine by me, but I still think we should talk about the whole Arabic script matter in a broader platform of discussion sometime soon. --Al Ameer son (talk) 20:50, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I discussed this at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Information#Enlarge_the_arabic_font before. Slomox would be able to change it, however we need more consensus...--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 20:53, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
(ec) Yes, definitely. I'm off to bed now, but many thanks Al Ameer for all your work here, it's appreciated. --NSH001 (talk) 21:02, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I will certainly support an increase script size and I think NSH001 agrees that the current default is just too small. Whenever you're not busy (and I know you are with Nasser, Asmahan, and the Free Officers, among others) could you reactivate the discussion. --Al Ameer son (talk) 20:58, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Isn't it just easier to change the lang-ar template? Being an admin, you can propose to change it, no?Yazan (talk) 09:22, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
That's what I mean by default. I will contact other admins and see if we could slightly increase the size of the script. Thanks for the suggestion. --Al Ameer son (talk) 18:09, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Hey

I need help from an admin, you have maybe been following the dispute at the Asmahan article, user Arab Cowboy went against the mediation process at the talkpage and started editing the article freely, yesterday, Diaa helped me bring back a lot of texts that was deleted, and told AC to use the mediation process at the talkpage: "Do the same trick with suggestions again and I'll reply to you first this time" right after, he started editing freely again, adding texts that has not been through the talkpage, adding citation quotes on areas that are sourced and changing sentences I had been permitted to ad going through the mediation process at the talkpage, so they are now almost exactly the same as the book, which I believe is not permitted. Can you please do something about this? http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Asmahan&diff=304985474&oldid=304972152

Diaa has now left as mediator. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 07:59, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, I can't blame him for leaving. I have been keeping up with the discussion somewhat, but then it turned into too much commotion so I moved on. However, now I'm seriously thinking about protecting the article (meaning putting on a lock) for maybe a day or two and then we could discuss exactly what changes need to be implemented. I will no longer tolerate the war between you and Arab Cowboy because I see it as extremely disruptive. I'm not pointing the finger at you or him, but at both of you. I will go to the article's talk page and lay this plan out. --Al Ameer son (talk) 18:19, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

GA Review

Hi Ameer, can I ask you for a small favor. I've just reviewed my first GAN (there's a terrible backlog on that page), and was wondering if you could just take a quick skim through the review to make sure I'm being fair to the people. It's an interesting subject anyway, Democratic Left Movement (Lebanon). (if you have the time, ofcourse). Thanks. Yazan (talk) 05:06, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Ameer. Notes have been taken care of. On another less important thing, would this vote interest you in any way? Yazan (talk) 06:03, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
I would certainly want to work on Damascus when you're done. I tried to plunge in but it's a dreadful task, there are so many sources, and such a huge history, that I have no idea how and where to start. I'd rather wait for you to finish up with Nasser, and then see how we can go about working on Damascus from there. Cheers! Yazan (talk) 07:30, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Editing Asmahan

Um... may I ask why you're editing the Asmahan article after you protected it? After I got over the shock that you're an admin (I haven't been editing Wikipedia in ages, so I completely missed this development), I was quite surprised to see you were editing an article that is protected, let alone protected by you. Granted, neither of the parties seems to be complaining about it, but it does look a bit odd and unnecessary (considering how short the protection is). It also seems to suggest that that's standard fare for a protected article -- the protecting admin (or any admin) updates content on-demand. -- tariqabjotu 11:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Greetings Tariq! I must admit even though I'm an admin, I'm still a little new at using the functions and didn't know that we were not allowed to edit articles we protected. The reason I did it is because for weeks now two users have been edit warring (you could look at the talk page) and long-term mediation has failed. Instead of temporarily blocking the users (which I though of doing but then changed my mind), I decided to protect the article and let them list what they want done on the talk page. After discussing their demands, I would add them to the article in an NPOV manner. The only reason I resorted to protection is because of the non-stop warring that was happening and each side complaining about the other user reverting his edits. The block should expire a day from now and until then I have to address Supreme Deliciousness's concerns on the talk page (took care of Arab Cowboy's I think). I know the whole thing seems unorthodox and I might not be explaining the situation correctly, but I would greatly appreciate it if you allow the block to continue until its expiration date. Welcome back and thanks! --Al Ameer son (talk) 18:11, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
I had no intention of unprotecting the page. I'd just like to think it would have been possible for what you did (i.e. translating their positions into good edits) to be done while the article is not protected (but that the parties would have agreed to let you do the editing). Or to have hashed everything together on the talk page, rather than in the article, while the protection was in place. It was especially strange to me because -- now maybe I'm reading this wrong -- it seemed you addressed Arab Cowboy's edits first (because he was the first to comment), rather then let them both comment before taking a stab at a solution. Hence, why I said it looked like you were editing on-demand. But, anyway: yes, it did work, and I suppose that's all that matters; it just... as I said... looked odd. -- tariqabjotu 13:37, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Requested move

Ameer, is it possible to move Firas Al Khatib to Firas al-Khatib per MoS? Yazan (talk) 21:49, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, Yazan (talk) 04:18, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Not to interfere in your mediation efforts on Asmahan, but this category seems relevant. Category:Egyptians of Syrian descent, Yazan (talk) 05:43, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Ameer, I've been following the ridiculous discussion on Asmahan for a while, and couldn't but commend you on your cool-headedness, I would've snapped a long time ago, way before diaa of annoyng did! On another note, can we move Prince Akram Shammaa to just Akram Shamaa, if Zengi doesn't get a title in his article, this one surely shouldn't. I'm not even sure of the whole notability of this article, but i'm in no mood to get into a fight over it. Thanks again! Yazan (talk) 03:25, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
Sorry if this is getting boring, but would it be possible to move Al Qamishli to Al-Qamishli per MoS? Thanks! Yazan (talk) 03:31, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! :) Yazan (talk) 04:30, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you

Al Ameer: Thank you for your help on the Asmahan article and your cool head through the process. We need to do the same now with Farid al-Atrash article. Are you ready? --Arab Cowboy (talk) 19:41, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Hold on, there are some other smaller problems in other articles that have to be addressed first, Ameer, I have made a new post at the talkpage: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AAsmahan&diff=305510925&oldid=305487252 --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 20:04, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
And now arab cowboy addded "adopted country" http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AAsmahan&diff=305513443&oldid=305511251

Ameer please, take a look at this. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 20:16, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Ameer, "Syrian homeland" is also backed up by source, can I ad it then?--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 20:29, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Diaa has repeatedly rejected "homeland" and "hometown" as subjective. We will not start this again. --Arab Cowboy (talk) 20:31, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
if "adopted country" can be allowed, "homeland" which is sourced, can not be refused. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 20:32, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
if Diaa says that "adopted country" is also subjective, then i will not object to removing it. but, he has so far not done so. --Arab Cowboy (talk) 20:36, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Thats because you chased him away, Ameer, "Syrian homeland" is sourced in the Shreff books, and was not allowed, therefor "adopted country" can not be allowed, if it is, then Syrian homeland must also be used. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 20:39, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Ameer you have to take a look at this, and also I added another point about Acs new edits: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AAsmahan&diff=305521397&oldid=305515585 --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 21:12, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Ameer, can you at least answer me? So I will know if I have to take care of this myself. Im trying to avoid more fighting.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 21:36, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
as more as I read the article, more problems I find, I have a 14th issue and an answer to the homeland issue: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AAsmahan&diff=305541030&oldid=305535808 --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 23:32, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
you have a new messages here, please take care of both things, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AAsmahan&diff=305651839&oldid=305559950 --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 06:32, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Ameer: Please see the most recent edits on Asmahan. I have let go of a LOT of changes... The use of "homeland" was unapproved by Diaa, yet I let it pass just to end this matter. However, SD reverted two minor modifications I made for grammar and historical accuracy. I do not want to drag this back to the drawing board, but I do find those edits objectionable. --Arab Cowboy (talk) 09:21, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

The use of "adopted country" was not approved by Diaa either, if that stays, then "homeland" which is sourced is also staying.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 10:51, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
SD, please post a link to where Diaa disapproved the use of "adopted country". --Arab Cowboy (talk) 10:55, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Articles on Palestinian Arab villages

Hi Al Ameer son! I realize that you have better things to do, and am sure you already know that there are quite a few articles on Palestinian Arab villages missing. I recently got an article (Operation Pleshet) promoted to GA which had the following red links to villages: Aqir, Julis, Gaza, al-Maghar and Zarnuqa. If you ever get back to writing articles about villages, please consider prioritizing these :) Cheers, Ynhockey (Talk) 00:45, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! I did not expect such a quick response, and will dare ask for something more, whenever you have time: There is an Egyptian books (in Arabic) called Harb Filastin, 1948 by Ibrahim Shakib. I could not find it anywhere so far, and asked a user who lives in Egypt to look, if he could. However, it is also possible that this can be found in a US library. Whenever you're at a library, a quick look would be appreciated! If you can find it, please photocopy something related to Operation Pleshet :) I think it's on page 223. Thanks again! —Ynhockey (Talk) 01:08, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Need Help!

I know you are busy, but please do not abandon the mediation. Arab Cowboy is changing sentences so they go against completely what the sources is saying: This is straight from Asmahans secretes page 13: "The other side of her patriotism was to her adopted country, Egypt. That loyalty is hard to measure, since she and other singers were dependent upon the Egyptian elites, as were the recording studios. They were required to sing songs of praise for the king and his line and other songs with republican themes." http://www.utexas.edu/utpress/excerpts/exzuhasp.html

Arab Cowboy changed this sentence to "The dependence on Egyptian elites led Asmahan and other singers to sing songs of praise for the king and his line."

And please also take a look at the "Objection" section at the talkpage. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 10:38, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Your poor attempt at rephrasing it as "The dependence on Egyptian elites led to Asmahan and other singers being required to sing praising songs for the king and the republic." is both grammatically and historically wrong. --Arab Cowboy (talk) 10:51, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Latakia GA Review

Marhaba Ameer Pasha, Is there any way to expedite the review of Latakia? I know it usually takes time, but there's a huge backlog there, and I'm afraid it's going to be a long, long wait. On another note, I will be traveling in week for almost 3 weeks, so please keep an eye on it to see if it's being reviewed! Thanks for all your help, and I'm looking forward to working on Damascus. I couldn't find Ross Burns' book anywhere here, so I'll order it from Amazon, which will take quite a bit of time, but I suspect Nasser will do too, so no rush! Salam, Yazan (talk) 17:45, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Invitation for help

Hello Al Ameerson, Its been awhile. Anyways I was wondering since you seem very knowledgeable with islamic military history that you could help me with an article I'm vastly seeking to improve. The article is Battle of the Nobles, and I think it has great potential! I found it just out of the blue and did a web search, got great sources on it. I listed them on the article talk page. By the way it was only had two sentences of content when I found it. Also, since I just joined Military history project I want help in contributing a great article Ive been working on for possible GA A-class status someday. Would love it if you could help me out some. need admin help..

Hi, the -48-village of Abu al-Fadl in the Ramleh district is now "located" at Abu al-Fadl (village). It really (to keep in line with, say Suba, Jerusalem) should be called Abu al-Fadl, Ramla. However, unfortunately, I made Abu al-Fadl, Ramla a redir. Soooo; could you please delete Abu al-Fadl, Ramla ...so we could move Abu al-Fadl (village) to that "location"? Cheers, Huldra (talk)

question

Is this copyright infringement? I tried to change a couple words so they wouldn't be exactly as the sources but Arab Cowboy changed them back: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Asmahan&diff=306843979&oldid=306842681

"The Allies reneged on their promises for Syrian independence and Asmahan, disgruntled, shifted allegiance to the Nazis. Asmahan boarded a train to Ankara, where she wanted to meet Hitler's ambassador to Turkey and master of Nazi espionage in the Middle East. British officials at the Turkish border refused to let her pass, and she was deported to Beirut."

This is what the source say: "The Free French reneged on their promise of independence and a disgruntled Asmahan shifted her allegiance to the Nazis in revenge. She boarded a train and headed to Ankara, where she wanted to meet Franz von Papen, Hitler's ambassador to Turkey and master of Nazi espionage in the Middle East. British officials at the border refused to let her pass, and she was deported to Beirut" http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/JI20Ak04.html

"nonexistent" was changed to "do not exist in sources on her life or British documents on that period" while the source say: "but there is no evidence in any of the sources on her life, or the British documents on the period" http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/JI20Ak04.html

And also he added the comment from the author "(although she was in reality a third cousin, twice removed)" in the middle of a quote.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 20:07, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Ameer

I asked you for help a couple days ago and you didn't answer, I'm asking you again to please take a look at this before it escalates further. Arab cowboy has reverted any attempt by me to remove plagiarism and correct other info.

The only reliable source say "some claimed", this was the first sentence: "It was alleged that Asmahan had been paid a handsome sum (£40,000) for her services to the Allies, but evidence for this is nonexistent and her family claimed she did it out of patriotism, believing it would help the independence of Syria." Sources: http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/JI20Ak04.html and http://books.google.com/books?id=ydFpAAAAMAAJ&dq=asmahan+40000&q=40000

Arab Cowboy changed it(with an obscure source) to: "Asmahan had been paid a handsome sum (£40,000) for her services to the Allies, according to one source,[55][56] but another source[38][39] states that evidence for this does not exist in references on her life or British documents on that period, and that her family claimed she did it out of patriotism, believing it would help the cause of the independence of Syria."

And several sections are almost direct copy's from the sources:

Ac had first added "and only remembered visits in the early 1920s" I deleted it and he re-added the exact section from the book with "probably"

So now it says: "she remembered it as a happy and carefree period. Although she did not spend much time in the Jabal and probably remembered visits in the early 1920s, the Jabal was what she saw as her "home" rather than her residences in Lebanon and Turkey." Almost exaclty the same as in Asmahans Secrets: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AAsmahan&diff=307112503&oldid=307099422

"She escaped by night on horseback, disguised as a male horseman and rode from Damascus to the Palestinian border." http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/JI20Ak04.html

British officials at the Turkish border refused to let her pass, and she was deported to Beirut." http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/JI20Ak04.html --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 17:06, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Ameer, You said to change "return when she was 19" but this was no problem, AC asked for this section "two bouts of marriage to her cousin and moving back to Syria" can you please make this clear at the talkpage? if she had lived there in childhood and also been married twice and moved back there twice, how come this is not "return" or "move back"? And does this removal of "return" also imply when she went to Egypt? and also answer to my first concern about the money for role in WW2 section.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 20:09, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

"instead of "relocated", "returned", "moved back", or whatever, we use the very simple and neutral "went to" Does this imply for all the "returns" in the article including when she went to Egypt?

If we could use "went to" or "left for" instead of "return" that would be great, but it really depends on what particular sentence. --Al Ameer son (talk) 20:53, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm talking about this section:

I wrote: "It was alleged that Asmahan had been paid a handsome sum (£40,000) for her services to the Allies, but evidence for this is nonexistent and her family claimed she did it out of patriotism, believing it would help the independence of Syria." Sources: http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/JI20Ak04.html and http://books.google.com/books?id=ydFpAAAAMAAJ&dq=asmahan+40000&q=40000

Which is the correct one? please look at the sources. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 20:29, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

They both would need work. I would write "Asmahan had been paid a sum of £40,000 for her services to the Allies, but evidence of the payment does not exist in references on her life or in British documents of that period.[38][39] Her family claimed she did it out of patriotism, believing it would help the cause of Syrian independence.[55][56]" What's wrong with the sources? --Al Ameer son (talk) 20:53, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Ameer read the sources, evidence for her service do exist, but not that she received any money, this is the source http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/JI20Ak04.html "Some claimed that she was rewarded with 40,000 pounds (roughly US$72,000) for her service to the Allies, but there is no evidence in any of the sources on her life, or the British documents on the period, to show that she actually received money for the mission. Her family later claimed that she worked with the Allies out of patriotism, believing that this would advance the cause of Syrian independence." --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 20:56, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

And Ameer, the removal of "return" and "moved back" is that all of them in the article? including those for Egypt?--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 20:58, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I changed my suggestion (thanks for the clarification). I responded to the "return" issue above. --Al Ameer son (talk) 21:01, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
But how can you start a sentence with "Asmahan had been paid" when the source say it was alleged? There are "returns" and "moved back" all over that article for both Syria and Egypt, you must be more clear in this. Arab Cowboy asked for one section and you said to remove it in another one. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 21:07, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
We could change it to "Asmahan was allegedly paid" to reflect the sources. I thought he asked about the bit on her marriage to Hassan where it said "relocated" and I suggested we use "went to". Could you bring up specific examples of the usage of those words in the article to the talk page? We could work them out on a case-by-case basis. --Al Ameer son (talk) 21:12, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

  • "During two bouts of marriage to her cousin and moving back to Syria, Asmahan's musical career would come to a complete halt, and when she ultimately rejected a return to "respectability" on her relatives’ terms, by returning to Egypt and her singing career,"
  • "and when the marriage to her cousin failed, she returned immediately to Egypt, before she had divorce documents in hand."
  • "and asked for her hand in marriage. So she returned to Syria, at which time she was nineteen. "
  • "In 1939[44], Asmahan returned to Cairo with her daughter and resumed her singing career."
  • "she had not remained in Syria long enough to obtain divorce documents before returning to Egypt, "
  • "However, in the same year, Asmahan returned to Jabal-al-Druze and remarried her cousin, Hassan"
  • "On her way back to Egypt by land, Asmahan met Egyptian film director Ahmed Salem in Jerusalem"
  • "In 1941, during World War II, Asmahan was asked by the Allies to return to Syria "
  • "After the Allies secured Syria during the Syria-Lebanon Campaign, she went back to Damascus "

all I could find--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 21:18, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

All but the last one are acceptable (it's very balanced). Let's just take "back" out of the last line because it's not made clear in the article that Asmahan was in Damascus previously (or is it?) --Al Ameer son (talk) 21:34, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes it is: This is from the source: While staying at the Orient Palace Hotel in Damascus, Asmahan received death threats from unknown people, who were believed to be pro-Vichy Druze. She escaped by night on horseback, leaving her luggage behind. She disguised herself as a male horseman and rode all the way to the Syrian-Palestinian border... "After the invasion, she returned to Damascus where she paraded through"--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 21:28, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
And you just said at the talkpage something about changing one of them.. so what is it? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 21:32, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
I was only referring to the marriage bit at the article talk page. As for the above, all are cleared. --Al Ameer son (talk) 21:34, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
But both marriage sections are here above: "and asked for her hand in marriage. So she returned to Syria, at which time she was nineteen." and "During two bouts of marriage to her cousin and moving back to Syria", wasn't this what he asked for? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 21:39, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Ameer, I am not sure why this sideshow is happening here and not on the Talk page of the article. The only location where I object to the use of "return", "move back", or similar is where she first got married to Hassan and relocated to Syria. All of the sources show that she had not lived in Syria in childhood, but only went there for visits. Zuhur uses the word "relocated" in this instance, which we should also use. --Arab Cowboy (talk) 21:41, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Marhaba AC, when I said above that we should bring the examples up at the talk page, I meant Asmahan's talk page. SD must have misinterpreted. Whatever, let's work this issue out here for now. I know the marriage bit is where your objection is, but so is SD's. This is why I suggest we change this one bit. I have to admit brothers, my patience is running low, so for the sake of compromise (... again) let's just change this one occurrence. If either of you really, fundamentally disagree with me on this one then contact another established user (preferably an admin who doesn't edit this topic area at all) and get his/her opinion. I won't abandon all of the issues in the article, but if you guys can't compromise on this particular issue then I have nothing else to offer. --Al Ameer son (talk) 21:51, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your patience Ameer. In light of the four sources that I listed on Asmahan's Talk page, all of which show that she did not live in Syria in childhood; one states that she probably went there for visits, what would be your suggested alternative to the word "relocated" in those instances? The question is not what I or SD want, but where is the truth? Thanks again, --Arab Cowboy (talk) 21:55, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Ameer, you have been a great help and I hope you will never leave this discussion. I really appreciate everything you have done. I want you to decide , I have posted many times the quotes about her childhood in the Jabal and her mother fleeing Suwayda with her kids, you decide from here.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 22:02, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you both very much. I don't think I'll be leaving all of the discussions and it's not just about my patience really, but also because I need to concentrate more on other articles I've been working on or plan to work on. Like I said guys, I got nothing else to offer on this particular issue. One of you should contact another admin (who doesn't edit much about the region) and ask him very plainly to take a look at the problem. Don't even mention each others name or any of the recent actions, just ask for his thoughts. Salaamat. --Al Ameer son (talk) 22:15, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Ameer when does it end? you have to take action now, he have went completely against your words, he removed the section you okeyd, including "returned" words here above you okeyd, while keeping the ones for Egypt, and reverted my fixing of plagiarism, you have to do something! --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 22:35, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Ameer why haven't you answered? He removed everything that you had accepted here! The WW2 part you suggested, the "returned" you accepted and the fixing of plagiarism. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 07:13, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Please use only the Talk page of the article. These sideshow complaints are childish. --Arab Cowboy (talk) 22:25, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Could you please answer to my post here below, Ac changing other sentence then what you said, and my four posts at the talkpage in the link. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 21:44, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Ameer, Arab Cowboy have went against what you said and changed "moved back to" to "relocation" when you clearly said on the talkpage that removal of return only was for that one sentence when she was nineteen. I pointed this out to him several time but he has engaged in edit warring. You also have four reply's here: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AAsmahan&diff=307545518&oldid=307513360 --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 16:49, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
I cannot imagine how someone would be so happy extracting concessions from a mediator through deception! I had changed that sentence to "residence in Syria", which is a neutral term. SD then reverted it to "moving back to Syria", which is the same as "return". I told him that if he did not accept the compromise of a neutral term, I would stick to my "relocation" position until further judgment. --Arab Cowboy (talk) 17:04, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
extracting concessions through deception?..what deception? The article said moved back to and you changed it without any kind of agreement including Ameer not saying you can change it and then edit warred so you can get your way through force, as always. This kind of behavior is what chased away both HelloAnyonng and Diaa. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 17:24, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

Ameer, thanks for fixing Adnan al-Malki, I still need a while to get a hold on how to quote sources without sounding too similar! Btw, I've started populating the List of towns and villages in Syria with all the towns by Governorate. The CBS is back online and has a basic list of statistics about all these third-level divisions here [6]. Salamat! Yazan (talk) 05:33, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Thankyou for making the effort to rewrite the article Ameer, but our policy is usually no second chances for articles with copyvio or plagiarism problems. The reason we take a hard line is to do as much as we can to discourage it. So although you personally are obviously not responsible for the copyvios, I don't think we can promote this one now. Gatoclass (talk) 07:05, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

re: Delay in responses

ok, I know its getting murkier, AC has changed several sections including going against what you said at the talkpage, plagiarizing even more, and reverting fixing of plagiarism, and therefore to avoid more edit wars I hope when you come back from your vacation you carefully read through the points I made and go into the article and compare texts with the source.

I made an update to one reply: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AAsmahan&diff=307706605&oldid=307664794

And the four others I'm still waiting on: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AAsmahan&diff=307545518&oldid=307513360

Take care!--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 08:08, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

25 DYK award

The 25 DYK Medal
Thank you for the 46 DYK articles that you've provided about an area of the world that could us, among other things, more encyclopedic articles. dm (talk) 16:15, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

As an aside

The links between your archive articles are broken. I bumped up your count on WP:DYKLIST, but I didn't necessarily notice if you had nominated any of the additional articles, you so might want to adjust the subtotals as necessary. In any case, congratulations, you're 4 away from the 50 award. dm (talk) 16:20, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Leaving

Hi, I´m leaving Wp, could you please delete my user-page? ...and put a "retired"-template on? I´m afraid I don´t know k´how to do it. Sorry it should end this way, but I *really* cannot stand the actions of dr. B. Cheers, thanks for the good time, and best of luck for you in the furture. Huldra (talk)

The actions of Dr. B for the record were made in good faith to try to improve coverage of these articles in the long run. Yes that's right, Huldra is leaving because somebody decided to contribute to "her" project and she doesn't like my way of things so is leaving... I don't see how it is possible to apologise for trying to improve coverage... Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:07, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

All the worst things were *always* done with the best intentions. Anyway, Al Ameer son, thanks for your note. I have answered all here: User talk:Huldra#The blue soup, I´m so sorry it should end this way. If people could listen to others, at times, then perhaps they would not destroy as much?  ;/ Huldra (talk) 22:27, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

What has been destroyed? This is rather crazy... The thing is it is not as if the existing articles were much better. Any one of these stubs could be fleshed out like Qumya in ten minutes flat.... Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:05, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

When Huldra sees what these articles will be like when I've finished she will owe me a big apology for the way she has treated me, not the other way around. Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:12, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Fast approaching 1000 edits on these. 1/3 are now fleshed out and are definately the start you wanted previously. If they are going to be expande din a day or two it should not have mattered how they were started. Wikipedia is much better off having these articles. Yet nobody at WP:Palestine appears to be appreciative of my efforts. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:55, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

OK, I'm glad at least you are calm about it. It is an encyclopedia after all, there is no time limit. That is why I find it hard to see why these articles can't be gradually expanded at a leisurely pace later... Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:02, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

{{District of Acre}}

I'm splitting that huge template into something less stressful looking by district like this. They are all listed in the category anyway. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:45, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Why is it they have to turn everything into a conflict? Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:51, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

It shouldn't really be just a project issue, templates should follow guidelines to Manual of style. Oversized templates where you have to scroll down to see it all are widely disapproved. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:57, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Well if it will help Hulcha. I'll leave a notice and mention that in light of Hulch leaving wikipedia because she can no longer continue to look at that template urgent action is needed to split this template. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:00, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

I am thought of that already, but, it will link to the list by district page. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:43, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

I don't care where she said it. I won't tolerate being spoken to like that. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:27, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Al Ameer son, do you have Khalidi's book? Can you check if he has a listing for Al-Qris Horkins? I think this may be a non-existent or hoax listing because I can't find anything under that spelling or anything close, but I don't have access to Khalidi and want to make sure its not listed there before asking you to speedy delete it. Cool? Tiamuttalk 20:43, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Hi Ameer, I'm not sure how to go about requesting a speedy deletion of this article. I wrote to you on Tiamut's talk page, should have written here as well. Anyway, I looked through the speedy deletion criteria, and thought that this fell under the nonsense category (I misread the definition of that criteria). In any case, I believe there should be a criteria for speedy deletion of a non-controversial article about a non-subject (I guess that could be categorized under vandalism, even if it is unintentional?). Anyway, this "village" is clearly fictitious (no possible Arabic translation, and more importantly no mention anywhere else on PR, or for that matter anywhere else on the WWW.) Sounds like a bored guy called Chris Horkins decided it would be funny to add this in :) What is strange, though, is that it has existed ever since the current template of depopulated villages was created. Unfortunately the User and Talk pages of Nick Finnsbury are inaccessible to try to figure out where he got the original list. Anyway, I hope there are not too many more of these. I think I could've spent the time I wasted on trying to get this article speedily deleted much more efficiently :) It will eventually be deleted, I'm sure. I removed it from the template btw. Regards, --Fjmustak (talk) 02:33, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Sorry about that, I'm sure you understand why I was annoyed at putting in 8 hours work into this and getting put down that's all.... Anyway, I'll speak tomorrow. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:09, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

deleting bogus articles

Hi, If you find any other dubious articles like that, just let me know and I'll delete them after doing my own checking. Zerotalk 03:35, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm an admin, so I can delete articles myself. If an article is clearly bogus and is not being actively supported by anyone, I'm allowed to zap it without more ado. And I have excellent sources on Palestinian villages for checking first. Zerotalk 04:40, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Technically, WP:HOAXes are generally not speedies. See WP:CSD#G1 and Wikipedia:HOAX#Dealing_with_hoaxes. Most of the time they must go through AfD, as frustrating as that is. -- Avi (talk) 04:44, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Was it a hoax then? Because it appears to have been linked in that template for a great deal of time undetected. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:38, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Canaan

Hey, thanks for the info about Canaan. Can I ask what this council was exactly? I think it can be put into article under the political writings section, which could be retitled political involvement, if its a political type council. But I need to know from you first what it is.

Thanks for dealing with Qris Horkins. Do you know where we can find a comprehensive list of all villages depopulated to check it against our list? I think it would be good to do that just to make sure nothing else got slipped in by accident. Happy editing Ameer. Tiamuttalk 10:18, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey, you started some of these articles with about the info I've been adding now!! I've been looking at this. It has developed well since, that is what I am hoping for the ones I created too. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:16, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Cool! Can you name the countries on here you work on then. So far I've counted Egypt, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Syria. Do you edit Jordan, Yemen and Saudi too? As for villages, could you start tackling Safad district, that is the biggy. I've filled out half of those I created a bit but it is probably best you experts use book sources and work on them in your own time without stress! I recently requested svg maps of Oman and Yemen anyway! Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:25, 19 August 2009 (UTC

I've worked on Jordan a bit and nothing on Saudi or Yemen other than Qatada ibn Idris (who was a prominent Middle Ages figure ). I'll add some info to the Safad district villages later today. Cheers, --Al Ameer son (talk) 18:32, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

I gather you speak fluent Arabic? I was wondering you could find an online site or PDF file on population in either Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Yemen or Oman. You see there are a lot of missing villages, most of which haven't been started because of lacking info. Could you find some village census details online? Or maybe you have library sources on them? Where are you living right now? Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:34, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

P.S. what is your view of Haifa Wehbe? Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:43, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Actually, I speak OK Arabic and I can't read or write Arabic. I was born, raised, and live in Florida, USA. My family is from Palestine. I've been trying to find online censuses for Syria and Yazan finally found one recently although it's in Arabic so I can't translate it. Yazan can't either because he's on vacation. As for Haifa, I don't really have an opinion on her music (don't listen to it), but real or fake she looks good... in some pictures. ;) --Al Ameer son (talk) 22:02, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Jund Ansar Allah

Will you provide a grade for the article?

There's some more that can be done with it but I don't think it needs to be greatly expanded since it's not the most notable event (though maybe it should be given the number of people that died and al-Qaeda inspiration of the group).

Thanks.ShamWow (talk) 13:28, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Al-Mazra'a Al-Qibliyya

Greetings Ameer, I know the village exists. I will try to find something on it. It might have merged with another village, or is included with another village in the census. I'll let you know as soon as I know anything. --Fjmustak (talk) 19:22, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

BTW, here's its location in Google Maps. I just remember writing the article about Al-Zaitounah a short while ago. So I guess it should be removed from the R&B gov. template, and the article redirected. Salam. --Fjmustak (talk) 19:36, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

The Arabic Award of Excellence
For your excellent service to Arabic related articles on wikipeda. Your abilities are outstanding in this area and we are very lucky to have a wikipedian on board who is able to improve coverage of these topics! Happy Ramadan! I couldn't help but notice too that you had also noticed Youssef Seddik was missing from here. I've done a lot of work translating articles on Tunisia from french in the past and I remember seeing this article on French wiki. I'm in the middle of constructing it at the moment but any additions later are most certainly welcome. Perhaps we could DYK it. Don't worry I have more than enough articles to attend to to go creating many more! Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:41, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

The phantom population demon

Hi, I wonder if you have any ideas for controlling the demon who keeps coming on different IPs to change population numbers at random. I just rolled back more than a dozen edits Special:Contributions/94.249.18.214. I guess it is a public ISP or internet cafe in Jordan. Cheers, Zerotalk 23:34, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

This person is really irritating. I've blocked the Jenin page for 3 days because of the disruptive edits and was about to do the same for List of cities in Palestinian National Authority areas. I also blocked a number of those accounts for 24-31 hours, but the blocks have since expired. The IP hasn't replied to any of my messages either. I also suspect User:Maher shalbak to be the same IP. After all this, I don't see anything else to do except semi-protect Jenin, Tulkarm, and the list of cities article for longer periods of time or we could impose some kind of indefinite block on IP accounts originating from that location in (?) Jordan. You've probably had more experience here than me so what do you think should be done. --Al Ameer son (talk) 23:48, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

The system is very reluctant to block ranges of IPs because legitimate users get blocked accidentally. But maybe we can start by collecting the IPs that have been used in recent past, then we can ask someone to check if they have been used by any legitimate users, and if not we can block them for a substantial period (say a month). I see: 94.249.18.214, 94.249.18.234, 94.249.11.38, 94.249.46.11. Zerotalk 02:43, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Alright by me, I'll start to track them. --Al Ameer son (talk) 19:01, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
