"Notable alumni" of minor league teams

Hi. Another editor, NatureBoyMD, has come up with what I think is a good and thoughtful template and conditions for a "notable alumni" list for a minor league team that interests him. See [1]. I thought that before he finalizes it, it/he might benefit from you taking a glance at it, and giving him any comments that you may have, since I could see it being used for other minor league teams (its better than anything I've seen), and you are a baseball editor whose views I respect. You needn't worry

You needn't worry that I'm seriously plotting to assassinate troublesome categories. For one, I'm not a bureaucrat, nor would I want to be one, so I can't satisfy my own stated pre-requisites for perpetration. Secondly, it would of course be an affront to the principle of "consensus", which (at least until further notice) is foundational. Thirdly, it would surely result in the perpetrators getting banned; nobody wants to be banned. Fourthly, I couldn't handle the media attention. Fifthly, what would my auntie Kay think? It was a passing joke—whether or not it's "sick" or not, I'm unsure—I'll have to get a fecal sample from it to know for sure. :) Just to clarify, I don't have a problem with users disagreeing with me on issues as opinion-dependent as the existence of a particular category. You can choose be "very worried" about all of this if you want—don't misunderstand me as being bossy or ordering you not to—but my suggestion would be that life is too short and for most people there are probably more important and relevant things to spend your "worry time" on. Possibly of concern to you

I was looking at a user's contributions and quite by accident I saw that the user had edited User talk:Alansohn2. Is User:Alansohn2 anything to do with you? If not, we might want to take further steps, as there's a possible risk of impersonation due to the similarity of your names. (The new account edited a page on NJ and also posted a warning on a user talk page, which is why I thought it might be you experimenting with another account, but if not this increases the potential confusion problems of a user using this name.) Fort Lee is about 5 miles away, but it's not me. There is a genuine possibility that its could be someone else with the same name, which would be quite a coincidence but far from impossible. I'd keep an eye on the account. It doesn't appear to be someone trying to spoof my edits, but the person could be close enough that some of our edits might overlap. This would have been a great candidate for a hook, but the article doesn't meet the qualifications for DYK. Per WP:DYK, an article must be new or have been expanded fivefold within the past five days. As this article is a rather old one, and has not met the expansion requirement, it would not be eligible. Needing a bit of help

Spotted a comment on the Bernards High site saying that a reference is needed for the citation of J Geils as a grad. A while ago I saw the 1964 yearbook with his picture in it -also know people who knew him - & recently saw the following on the internet:
_ June 6th, 2005 BERNARDS HIGH SCHOOL in Bernardsville is celebrating its centennial this month. One famous graduate from the Class of 64 is John W. The item is a single sentence quoted on a blog from a newspaper article. While I am familiar with the paper, and I would accept it as a source if I could find it, I have been unable to find the original article. While I would have little (or lesser) objection to inclusion of the link if it was covered by reliable and verifiable sources, it is not and no sources of any kind are provided. This section originally contained several sources about promiscuity and MSM, but were removed by Allstarecho. Of those statistics he only left those which positively portray MSM. You set up the straw man, and when I pointed out that I wasn't saying all of Yahoo was not a reliable source, you conveniently ignored that. No one has commented on your use of a blog as a source, because you never asked that question. Set up a real RfC and then get consensus, and your edit will be valid. If you believe that you have a case above and beyond the one that was rejected at WP:RSN, start an RfC, but be forewarned that you will be hit directly by claims that you're forum shopping.

Re: Jeremy Glick: Saddle River or Upper Saddle River

Hey, there does seem to be some discrepancy between sources, however, I found this one: [9] which states Glick was born in NYC and raised in Oradell, NJ, and says he attended the Saddle River day school. I also found this [10] which also states Oradell as a location he grew up in (not 100% sure if it's credible). If there are conflicting sources then perhaps the information should not be included until we find various sources that are consistent with one another. What do you think? Guild of Copy Editors December 2017 News

Hello copy editors! Welcome to the December 2017 GOCE newsletter, which contains nine months(!) of updates. The Guild has been busy and successful; your diligent efforts in 2017 has brought the backlog of articles requiring copy edit to below 1,000 articles for the first time. Thanks to all editors who have contributed their time and energy to help make this happen.

Our copy-editing drives (month-long backlog-reduction drives held in odd-numbered months) and blitzes (week-long themed editing in even-numbered months) have been very successful this year.

March drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2016 from our backlog and all February 2017 Requests (a total of 304 articles). By the end of the month, all but 22 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 28 who signed up, 22 editors recorded 257 copy edits (439,952 words). (These numbers do not always make sense when you compare them to the overall reduction in the backlog, because not all editors record every copy edit on the drive page.)

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 April; the theme was Requests. Of the 15 who signed up, 9 editors completed 43 articles (81,822 words).

May drive: The goals were to remove July, August, and September 2016 from the backlog and to complete all March 2017 Requests (a total of 300 articles). By the end of the month, we had reduced our overall backlog to an all-time low of 1,388 articles. Of the 28 who signed up, 17 editors completed 187 articles (321,810 words).

June blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 18 through 24 June; the theme was Requests. Of the 16 who signed up, 9 editors completed 28 copy edits (117,089 words).

2017 Coordinator elections: In June, coordinators for the second half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 moved back into the lead coordinator position, with Miniapolis stepping down to remain as coordinator; Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators, and Keira1996 rejoined after an extended absence. Thanks to all who participated!

July drive: We set out to remove August, September, October, and November 2016 from the backlog and to complete all May and June 2017 Requests (a total of 242 articles). The drive was an enormous success, and the target was nearly achieved within three weeks, so that December 2016 was added to the "old articles" list used as a goal for the drive. By the end of the month, only three articles from 2016 remained, and for the second drive in a row, the backlog was reduced to a new all-time low, this time to 1,363 articles. Of the 33 who signed up, 21 editors completed 337 articles (556,482 words).

August blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 20 through 26 August; the theme was biographical articles tagged for copy editing for more than six months (47 articles). Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors completed 38 copy edits (42,589 words).

September drive: The goals were to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all August 2017 Requests (a total of 338 articles). Of the 19 who signed up, 14 editors completed 121 copy edits (267,227 words).

October blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 22 through 28 October; the theme was Requests. Of the 14 who signed up, 8 editors completed 20 articles (55,642 words).

November drive: We set out again to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all October 2017 Requests (a total of 207 articles). By the end of the month, these goals were reached and the backlog shrank to its lowest total ever, 997 articles, the first time it had fallen under one thousand (click on the graph above to see this amazing feat in graphical form). It was also the first time that the oldest copy-edit tag was less than eight months old. Of the 25 who signed up, 16 editors completed 159 articles (285,929 words).

Rusf10, in this edit at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bill Zanker you made the rather explicitly abusive threat that "I have now noticed that both you and the subject of the article live in the same town. And to be honest with you, the article List of people from Teaneck, New Jersey should not exist and neither should about half the articles on that list." Now you're shamelessly violating WP:HARASS by following through on that threat, starting with mayors and now working through other people on the exact same list you've targeted in your threat. If you think that trying to delete articles merely because the person has come connection to a place that I have connection to is not in and of itself a violation of the basic norms of WP:CIVILITY you are far more screwed up than I ever imagined. I don't have access to Newspapers.com, which has many sources in that intermediate, pre-Internet / competitive newspaper era of the type that would establish broad notability for many of the subjects we're dealing with. Depending on finding sources only on what can be Googled leaves people who made their marks in the 1950s to 1970s harder to source. I will upload the Renna source later this morning.
Keep up the great work on expanding articles. The best response to rampant deletionism isn't voting keep at an AfD, it's adding the sources that show a topic is notable and convinces others. Alansohn (talk) 12:56, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

Alansohn, Thanks for your note. I’m struggling to justify spending the time required to be a useful contributor. My initial experience in the Appel AfD discussion was very frustrating. I clearly made some rookie mistakes but was taken aback by the condescension and hypocrisy of some of the editors I encountered. And the decision to delete, when no consensus was the obvious call, just highlighted for me how subjective and random these decisions are, particularly when they are close. Not sure I want to participate in a system where the rules are so ambiguous and so many of the other participants have their own agendas and biases. Bernice McCullers, having a connection to one and only one Wikipedia article is a very two-edged sword. You feel strongly about the article, but what happens to it feels personal. The broader your editing interests, the more satisfying editing can be and the less it feels that anything that happens to the article is an attack on you. Two things:

The phrase "comprised of" is incorrect. OK, so this is disputed, but it's much better to use language that is undisputedly correct.
You used {{sic}} for something that isn't in a quotation.

Furthermore, I didn't feel the need to go redundantly into the specifics here, as you could see what was changed by viewing the diff page. And the basic question I asked is why you made the edit. Whether you think it's a mistake or not is irrelevant to this question. Also, what on earth do you mean by "avoid copy editing interference"? — Smjg (talk) 18:52, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

Smjg, the basic question is why *you* have made the edit. Reviewing your user page, it's apparent that the issue is that you -- based on your personal beliefs and quaint local dialect -- believe that the term "comprised of" is a "mistake". Here in the United States, we don't believe that to be the case. We proudly state that "the United States is comprised of 50 states" and sometimes extend "comprised of" as a warm greeting to friends, neighbors (never "neighbours") and other various and sundry passersby. In the UK variant of the common language that divides us, you use spellings such as "kerb" and "centre", while Americans write "curb" and "center". Per WP:ENGVAR, it's inappropriate to impose these changes on an article, especially where there is a strong national connection. As the schools here are firmly anchored in the soil of the United States and as there is no objection to the use of "comprised of" here in his country (perhaps due to the far lower levels of grammar prigs who believe that it is wrong to split infinitives, dangle a participle and other such nanny state prescriptivism), I see no reason to treat uses of "comprised of" as a "mistake". I'm guessing that Lynne Truss would be 100% on your side, but that support should be limited to articles where a strong UK connection exists. I can assure you that I won't be updating UK-based articles and inserting "comprised of"; I hope that you will observe the same effort to avoid copy editing interference. MOS:NUMS, WP:SELFPUB

Hello Alansohn -- Last night I started getting a bot-edit as I was publishing articles. It would, apparently, check for references with the same base URL as the subject. I either had to edit the article, or confirm that they were to stay in. Most of what I edited out were claims that would have been troublesome to verify elsewise, to wit: "best in the state" and similar claims.

As to MOS:NUMS, it appears you want me to use AP style: spell zero to nine and use digits for others. I prefer the Chicago style: zero to one hundred. It appears that MOS:NUMS allows the spelling of any two-word number. All numbers zero to one hundred can be described in two words or less. I hope that is okay with you. Rhadow, I agree that you have to be careful for promotional claims sourced to the article's subject, but the nature of the details included here meet the criteria of WP:SELFPUB; I am curious to know what bot is detecting these references with the same base URL as the subject. Numbers from 10 to 99 *can* be spelled out using words per MOS:NUMS and I would support writing out numbers in articles where the details are being added. However, there appears to be no reason to change two-digit values from numbers to words in cases where there is a consistent standard that already exists within an article. Drmies, please allow me to return the favor of a reply to your horse shit that "'Integral part' is horse shit, and you know it.".
If, as in this edit, you believe that the classic novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn set in Williamsburg is "trivial", that is horse shit. If by that edit you meant that it (and other easily sourced content) must be deleted because it was "unverified", you have never read WP:PRESERVE and that too is horse shit. If you believe that changing citation formats doesn't violate WP:CITEVAR,again, horse shit. If, as in this edit, you believe that brief quotations included in references must be removed, more horse shit. If you believe that this edit with a meaningless one-word edit summary of "more" in which thousands of characters of brief quotations were removed is justified by policy, yet more horse shit. If you believe that Template:Cite_news doesn't include a quote parameter that is designed and intended to display "Relevant text quoted from the source" and that is used in tens of thousands of Wikipedia articles as an "integral part" of our encyclopedia, we are dealing with steaming mounds of horse shit.
If you are a Wikipedia administrator and believe that you have some privileged access to my thoughts and can be arrogant enough to believe as in the above edit that it is acceptable to violate WP:NPA, that is total horse shit. Feel free to refactor your horse shit comments above and start a mature and productive conversation on the topic at the article's talk page and get consensus for your position that brief quotations must be removed from references. While I appreciate this edit updating the city council members, I didn't appreciate you changing the format of the reference. I intend to improve this article in the future to become a Good article, if not featured article, and for that, the citations need to be in Template:Cite web format. That being said, I do see you editing the city article a lot. Would you like to collaborate on any articles city-related? I have updated City Hall recently, I intend to write an article about the Music Pier, maybe the Boardwalk. What do you think? I also have an article that's under construction for List of mayors of Ocean City, New Jersey. Hurricanehink, there is so much work that could be done on the topics that you've listed and I hope to be able to help you collaboratively with that effort. I've been involved with other GA efforts, where there were no changes needed to citation formats. The changes to citation format conflict with WP:CITEVAR and should be unnecessary, even for GA status. If they are indeed required, they should probably be the last changes made, rather than the first, with the focus being on adding content and sourcing any material that needs referencing. I should certainly be able to help with mayors. Let me know what I can do to help.

Thanks for the reply. You're right, I may have violated WP:CITEVAR with my edits, apologies. I thought using the template was a requirement, but it turns out it's not! I'm just used to adding them, so when I was adding content, I went with the citation method I'm used to. It's the citing method I've used for over 10 years, so apologies from this old user for not following the rules. Hurricanehink, the general rule seems to be to maintain a consistent citation standard in an article. There's no reason to change them over, unless they're outliers from the prevailing standard, but old habits die hard. If the main focus is on adding and improving content, then we're probably headed in the right direction. Again, let me know if I can help with expansion efforts. If you won't discuss issues and prefer to do your edit warring via template, you accomplish nothing. If you want to discuss the issue, head to the article's talk page. It's not a bad faith claim, you're at 3RR. BRD isn't even a guideline. I've raised the general issue at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools#When is it appropriate for material about a teacher sexually assaulting a pupil to be in the school's article. Guild of Copy Editors February 2018 News

Welcome to the February 2018 GOCE newsletter in which you will find Guild updates since the December edition. We got to a great start for the year, holding the backlog at nine months. 100 requests were submitted in the first 6 weeks of the year and were swiftly handled with an average completion time of 9 days.

Coordinator elections: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2018 were elected. Jonesey95 remained as lead coordinator and Corrine, Miniapolis and Tdslk as assistant coordinators. Keira1996 stepped down as assistant coordinator and was replaced by Reidgreg. Thanks to all who participated!

End of year reports were prepared for 2016 and 2017, providing a detailed look at the Guild's long-term progress.

January drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2017 from our backlog and all December 2017 Requests (a total of 275 articles). As with previous years, the January drive was an outstanding success and by the end of the month all but 57 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 38 who signed up, 21 editors recorded 259 copy edits (490,256 words).

February blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 February, focusing on Requests and the last articles tagged in May 2017. At the end of the week there were only 14 pending requests, with none older than 20 days. Of the 11 who signed up, 10 editors completed 35 copy edits (98,538 words).

WikiCup 2018 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. With 53 contestants qualifying, the groups for round 2 are slightly smaller than usual, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining users.

Our top scorers in round 1 were:

Aoba47 led the field with a featured article, 8 good articles and 42 GARs, giving a total of 666 points.
FrB.TG , a WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points, gained from a featured article and masses of bonus points.
Ssven2, another WikiCup newcomer, was in third place with 403 points, garnered from a featured article, a featured list, a good article and twelve GARs.
Ceranthor, Numerounovedant, Carbrera, Farang Rak Tham and Cartoon network freak all had over 200 points, but like all the other contestants, now have to start again from scratch. A good achievement was the 193 GARs performed by WikiCup contestants, comparing very favourably with the 54 GAs they achieved.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. - Djflem - CEHC is a start, but it needs additional expansion. It's hard to believe that one bitter editor with an axe to grind is pointing a gun that forces the creation of articles like this one. Sorry for stalking, I agree with Djflem's title for the page, that the capitalized E looks better. However, if you check the AfD, I've listed a whole bunch of similar pages with different naming conventions and it seems to be lowercase e when plural (executives) and capitalized when singular (Executive), so it's really how you want the page to go, Alansohn. In the end it works both ways, but if @Djflem: is making a page in the same category we should at least have consistency across the NJ pages. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 18:58, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Beaches in NJ

Hey I agree with you that the category Beaches of NJ should only contain beaches and Jersey Shore communities should only contain towns. It seems redundant to have them both included. I added those categories just because all other entries were basically filled into the beaches of NJ category but now I think we should remove this from town articles. IBAN Violation

There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved.

SarekOfVulcan, the response I made was to Bearcat, with whom there is no interaction ban. If the IBAN means that one editor WP:OWN's every AfD that that editor creates with no opportunity to participate in any manner, I have never seen that condition stated. SarekOfVulcan, the terms stated above in th Interaction Ban notification state: "The purpose of an interaction ban (IBAN) is to stop a conflict between individuals. Although the interaction-banned users are generally allowed to edit the same pages or discussions so long as they avoid each other, they are not allowed to interact with each other. Editors subject to an interaction ban are not permitted to: 1) edit each other's user and user talk pages; 2) reply to each other in discussions; 3) make reference to or comment on each other anywhere on Wikipedia, directly or indirectly; 4) undo each other's edits to any page, whether by use of the revert function or by other means; 5) use the thanks extension to respond to each other's edits." Your post was clearly a "reply to each other in discussions" because you addressed the arguements for deletion, citing the same page as used to justify deletion by the nom. In my view every post on an AfD is a reply to the nomination. Further the discussion that lead to the IBAN specifically discussed the IBAN would stop you from commenting on Rusf10's AfDs. WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

Guild of Copy Editors June 2018 News

Welcome to the June 2018 GOCE newsletter, in which you will find Guild updates since the February edition. Progress continues to be made on the copyediting backlog, which has been reduced to 7 months and reached a new all-time low. Requests continue to be handled efficiently this year, with 272 completed by the end of May (an average completion time of 10.5 days). Fewer than 10% of these waited longer than 20 days, and the longest wait time was 29 days.

Wikipedia in general, and the Guild in particular, experienced a deep loss with the death on 20 March of Corinne. Corinne (a GOCE coordinator since 1 July 2016) was a tireless aide on the requests page, and her peerless copyediting is a part of innumerable GAs and FAs. Her good cheer, courtesy and tact are very much missed.

March drive: The goal was to remove June, July and August 2017 from our backlog and all February 2018 Requests (a total of 219 articles). This drive was an outstanding success, and by the end of the month all but eight of these articles were cleared. Of the 33 editors who signed up, 19 recorded 277 copy edits (425,758 words).

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 15 through 21 April, focusing on Requests and the last eight articles tagged in August 2017. At the end of the week there were only 17 pending requests, with none older than 17 days. Of the nine editors who signed up, eight editors completed 22 copy edits (62,412 words).

May drive: We set out to remove September, October and November 2017 from our backlog and all April 2018 Requests (a total of 298 articles). There was great success this month with the backlog more than halved from 1,449 articles at the beginning of the month to a record low of 716 articles. Officially, of the 20 who signed up, 15 editors recorded 151 copy edits (248,813 words).

Coordinator elections: It's election time again. Nominations for Guild coordinators (who will serve a six-month term for the second half of 2018) have begun, and will close at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible, and self-nominations are encouraged. Voting will take place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June.

June blitz: Stay tuned for this one-week copy-editing blitz, which will take place in mid-June.

WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Thank you for the kind words Alan! I have to extend my thanks to you for doing tireless editing work that the general public might not notice. My friend's philosophy is, "If not me, then who?" I feel the same philosophy about Wikipedia. Someone will eventually fix up these articles, but there are only so many editors, and so much time. I'm happy to edit articles about my own back yard. Guild of Copy Editors August 2018 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the August 2018 GOCE newsletter. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Guild's June election; your new and returning coordinators are listed below. The next election will occur in December 2018; all Wikipedia editors in good standing may take part.

Our June blitz focused on Requests and articles tagged for copy edit in October 2017. Of the eleven people who signed up, eight editors recorded a total of 28 copy edits, including 3 articles of more than 10,000 words. Complete results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the July drive. Of the seventeen people who signed up, thirteen editors completed 194 copy edits, successfully removing all articles tagged in the last three months of 2017. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are here.

SarekOfVulcan, gain, the violation was inadvertent and was removed. I got the point and now that I know that the editor is back I will be far more careful. I had spent months checking edit histories of every article I edit to make sure that there is no potential violation. Seeing a lengthy gap, my guard was down and I missed it. I can assure you that I couldn't tell you who had nominated any of the last dozen articles I voted on, even with a gun to my head. I will be far more careful in the future. Hi Alan. I have closed the ANI thread. Your topic ban has been extended indefinitely. Note that you may appeal this at WP:AN in the future, and requesting a standard offer unban (after six months with no violations) would be a good way of going about that. As Rusf10's corresponding topic ban is still set to expire, the community has granted you an exception to allow you to respond to any deletion nominations where you have created or significantly contributed the article in question. In such situations, you will be allowed a single statement of any length as long as it is content-based and not personally directed at Rusf10 in any way. This is not to say that Rusf10 will be allowed to harass or bait you, but if you feel that's happening you'll need to report that at AN or ANI and not violate the terms of the IBAN. WikiCup 2018 September newsletter

The fourth round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The eight users who made it to the final round had to score a minimum of 422 points to qualify, with the top score in the round being 4869 points. The leaders in round 4 were:

Courcelles scored a magnificent 4869 points, with 92 good articles on Olympics-related themes. Courcelles' bonus points alone exceeded the total score of any of the other contestants!
Kees08 was second with 1155 points, including a high-scoring featured article for Neil Armstrong, two good topics and some Olympics-related good articles.
Cas Liber, with 1066 points, was in third place this round, with two featured articles and a good article, all on natural history topics.
Other contestants who qualified for the final round were Nova Crystallis, Iazyges, SounderBruce, Kosack and Ceranthor.

During round four, 6 featured articles and 164 good articles were promoted by WikiCup contestants, 13 articles were included in good topics and 143 good article reviews were performed. There were also 10 "in the news" contributions on the main page and 53 "did you knows". Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Some content you added to the above article back in January appears to have been copied in part from The New York Times. Copying text directly from a source is a copyright violation. Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, some of the content had to be removed. All content you add to Wikipedia must be written in your own words. Diannaa, while I am certain that your claims of copyright violation are false, in your roles as judge, jury and executioner, you have also removed any of the evidence of the alleged crime. Solely based on what I've recalled, this would hardly be the first time that you have taken an absolutist stand on perceived copyright violations in a circumstance where the claim was unjustified. I'm sure that you believe that you are correct, but you leave no mechanism to challenge your alleged thought crimes. Alansohn (talk) 19:23, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Please remove edit

Mr. Sohn, My name is Steve Grayberg. I am working with the Pompton Lakes NJ Mayor and select council members to try to improve the Borough’s on-line presence. According to edit history, you have placed an edit about a specific newspaper series earlier this year on the Wikipedia Pompton Lakes general information page. Having looked at some of your work, we recognize that you are a prolific Wikipedia contributor, and that you mean to improve the information available through this medium.

However, please understand that to most people, placing an edit about a specific newspaper piece in the middle of a general article containing, geography, history and census information, appears more like vandalism, or at least bad faith. We ask that you remove this edit (#27) from that page.

2601:41:C101:82C0:D12D:AA8A:A696:E246 - Mr. Grayberg, I appreciate your efforts on behalf of the municipality, but you should definitely review the limitations placed by Wikipedia's policy on conflict of interest, which are intended to deal with this exact type of issue relating to the tension of what should be included in an article about a place. I don't see any reason to remove the details regarding contamination, and its health impacts, related to the defunct DuPont facility, and I'm certainly not sure that it would be considered "bad faith", let alone "vandalism", to include the material, which is most certainly encyclopedic. After further consideration, I have moved the material from the lead and placed it in the history section, which includes other details about the plant. Proposed deletion of Intel Schools of Distinction

The article Intel Schools of Distinction has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This article is clearly a leftover from earlier times. A big corporation gave an education grant for a couple years. No indication of general notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Tinton5, I think that this editor is incredibly misguided, but I'm not sure what to do next. The failure to communicate makes matters worse, but the edits do seem to be based on reliable information, though I have no idea what the sources are (none are ever provided) or why the editor insists on bizarre formatting (Such As Using All Initial Capitalization). I'm scratching my head, but I'd like to find a way to reach out to this person, correct the issues and turn out a productive editor.

My pleasure, and many thanks to you as well for the same things. I have a question, when you added info to Anthony DeAngelo, along with other biographical pages, adding in their hometown of Sewell, part of Washington Twp, Gloucester County...whereas the Sewell page says it is part of Mantua Twp. Should this be corrected as well as proper category placement? I know that Sewell borders Washington Twp, unless the two overlap. Though the Washington Twp page does include Sewell as part of the town. We have a little contradiction here. I just wanted to clarify this. Tinton5 (talk) 02:37, 21 September 2018 (UTC)

Tinton5, I saw that same contradiction. The article for DeAngelo had placed him as being from Sewell, and based on that he had been placed into the category for people from Mantua Township. But the sources for DeAngelo explicitly place him in Sewell and in Washington Township. The Washington Township article lists Sewell as one of the ZIP codes that serves the community. I did my best to find a source (or sources) that places Sewell as covering both Mantua and Washington Township, but I have been unable to do so (though I did find a letter to the editor that argues that Washington Township should have its own ZIP code and mentions Sewell as one of the ZIP codes for Washington Township). I think that the needed change would be to indicate that Sewell covers portions of both Mantua and Washington Townships, but the right sources are needed for that.^{[page needed]}Again, thanks for seeing that same paradox that I had seen. TiMike, No. Among the entries in Category:Public libraries in New Jersey, most are for libraries that are genuinely notable, which includes Danforth Memorial Library and East Orange Public Library, where the history and / or historic status of the library merits standalone articles. Some are like the one for the Haddon Heights Public Library, where notability is not established and for which a merge / redirect would be appropriate; I would include Haddonfield Public Library and Hopewell Public Library in that group. The material should be preserved in the municipal article and we should preserve the possibility of recreating the library article as a standalone if independent notability can be demonstrated. Do you have access to that? They had a free weekend, so I clipped like 40 articles. I only found out about it like an hour beforehand so I was just rushing. I've found more I would love to see clipped.
