A Song Flung Up to Heaven

Hey AB, would you mind making your support for A Song Flung Up to Heaven more clear? Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/A Song Flung Up to Heaven/archive1. I swear, sometimes I can find neither rhyme or reason to FAC. Sometimes, my articles pass easily, and quicker than I anticipate, and other times they languish for weeks. I'm sure has more to do with the volunteers' time and other stuff going on in their lives, but it can be maddening at times, especially when I'm trying to get through to the next round in the Wikicup. Assyrian Universal Alliance Foundation

Dear Another Believer, The reason for my deletion of the reference to the Assyrian Foundation for the Arts being the same as Assyrian Universal Alliance Foundation is not a true statement.

I was one of the founders of AFA along with the president, Narsai David. We formed the foundation in his restaurant in Kensington, Ca and I even designed the logo. The AUA Foundation in Chicago may have been one of the contributors, but they were not in any way a part the AFA.

When you look at their reference to the AUAF page, it states that Fred Parhad was commissioned by AUAF to erect the monument in San Francisco... they can claim that all they want (you can call that stretching the truth!) but that reference does not show evidence of the two foundations being connected. I noticed you updated the count again at the Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes America/Portland/2013 page, but here's something you might not have noticed: Ipoellet has uploaded several Portland NRHP-site photos in recent days (coincidentally starting right about the time I mentioned in a message to you [on my talk page] that most of his recent uploads had been from outside the Portland area), but none of them is reflected in the count you have been using. That's because, I noticed, he hasn't put any of them into the Commons:Category:Images from Wikipedia Takes Portland 2013, which is what generates that total (currently standing at 375). He included the Wikipedia Loves Monuments 2013 template, which automatically put the photos into some categories related to the September 2013 campaign, but the Portland category must be added manually, and he hasn't done that for the few I checked at random. I don't know whether it was a conscious choice or not, so I haven't added that cat myself, but maybe I (or you) should. I also noticed that none of Visitor7's uploads of Rocky Butte was placed in the Portland WLM 2013 cat, but in that instance it appears that he wasn't aware that they showed a site that's listed on the NRHP, an issue I've tried to address briefly by adding an NRHP infobox at Rocky Butte. Regarding the above, I suppose I should just leave a message on their talk pages, but since you have much more experience with these kinds of campaigns than I do, I figured I'd ask for your thoughts first. By the way, it's very strange to me that of the 13 users listed as "participants" at the page for this effort, only four (you, me, Visitor7 and Ipoellet) have actually made any contributions. The other nine have not made a single contribution related to this, at either Commons or Wikipedia, and several are newly created accounts that have not made any edits to any article or at Commons, whether NRHP-related or not; in effect, they are non-existent users. I'm not a suspicious person by nature, but I cannot help being a little suspicious when 9 out of 13 self-identified users have not actually "participated" at all, not even with a single edit. WikiCup 2013 August newsletter

This year's final is upon us. Our final eight, in order of last round's score, are:

  1. Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer who has contributed on topics of military history and physics, including a number of high-importance topics. Good articles have made up the bulk of his points, but he has also scored a great deal of bonus points. He has the second highest score overall so far, with more than 3000 points accumulated.
  2. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), another WikiCup veteran who reached the finals in 2012, 2011 and 2010. He writes on a variety of topics including botany, mycology and astronomy, and has claimed the highest or joint highest number of featured articles every round so far this year. He has the third highest score overall, with just under 3000 points accumulated.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 WikiCup champion, who writes mostly on marine biology. She has also contributed to high-importance topics, seeing huge numbers of bonus points for high-importance featured and good articles. Previous rounds have seen her scoring the most bonus points, with scoring spread across did you knows, good articles and featured articles.
  4. Canada Sasata (submissions), a WikiCup veteran who finished in second place in 2012, and competed as early as 2009. He writes articles on biology, especially mycology, and has scored highly for a number of collaborations at featured article candidates.
  5. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), the winner of the 2010 competition. His contributions mostly concern Naval history, and he has scored a very large number of points for good articles and good article reviews in every round. He is the highest scorer overall this year, with over 3500 points in total.
  6. Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions), who is competing in the WikiCup for the second time, though this will be her first time in the final. A regular at FAC, she is mostly interested in British medieval history, and has scored very highly for some top-importance featured articles on the topic.
  7. London Miyagawa (submissions), a finalist in 2012 and 2011. He writes on a broad variety of topics, with many of this year's points coming from good articles about Star Trek. Good articles make up the bulk of his points, and he had the most good articles back in round 2; he was also the highest scorer for DYK in rounds 1 and 2.
  8. Scotland Adam Cuerden (submissions) has previously been involved with the WikiCup, but hasn't participated for a number of years. He scores mostly from restoration work leading to featured picture credits, but has also done some article writing and reviewing.

We say goodbye to eight great participants who did not qualify for the final: Poland Piotrus (submissions), Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), Ohio ThaddeusB (submissions), Michigan Dana boomer (submissions), Prince Edward Island Status (submissions), United States Ed! (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), England Calvin999 (submissions). Having made it to this stage is still an excellent achievement, and you can leave with your heads held high. We hope to see you all again next year. Signups are now open for the 2014 WikiCup, which will begin on 1 January. All Wikipedians, whatever their interest or level of experience, are warmly invited to participate in next year's competition.

This last month has seen some incredible contributions; for instance, Cwmhiraeth's Starfish and Ealdgyth's Battle of Hastings—two highly important, highly viewed pages—made it to featured article status. It would be all too easy to focus solely on these stunning achievements at the expense of those participants working in lower-scoring areas, when in fact all WikiCup participants are doing excellent work. A mention of everything done is impossible, but here are a few: Last round saw the completion of several good topics (on the 1958, 1959 and 1962 Atlantic hurricane seasons) to which 12george1 had contributed. Calvin999 saw "S&M" (song), on which he has been working for several years, through to featured article status on its tenth try. Figureskatingfan continued towards her goal of a broad featured/good topic on Maya Angelou, with two featured and four good articles. ThaddeusB contributed significantly to over 20 articles which appeared on the main page's "in the news" section. Adam Cuerden continued to restore a large number of historical images, resulting in over a dozen FP credits this round alone. The WikiCup is not just about top-importance featured articles, and the work of all of these users is worthy of commendation.

WikiCup 2013 September newsletter

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Canada Sasata (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and New South Wales Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

List of University of Oregon Buildings

Hello, Your list of Reed College buildings seems like a good idea for other colleges. The Campus of the University of Oregon page, for example, contains a section on buildings. It is not an attractive part of the page, however. Could a tabular list of UO buildings replace the current list or do you think it should be a stand-alone list similar to what you created for Reed College buildings? John Jacob Astor Hotel

You might be interested in this expansion: John Jacob Astor Hotel. However, my main reason for posting this message is to ask the following: Did you take any detail photos of this building when you photographed it in 2011? Your photo in the infobox shows the building very well overall, but now that I've expanded this into a real article, one or two detail shots would be welcome. But I'm guessing you didn't take any, since you probably already would have uploaded them if you had. By the way, I had no idea of this building's historic role in the development of cable TV until only about 26 hours ago, when I stumbled across that tidbit while wrapping up (or so I thought) my research on this article. I then had to do a bit more research! It's so nice being able to access both The Oregonian and The Daily Astorian (back to 2002 only) from the comfort of my own computer, for free, courtesy of my Multnomah County Library card. I've tried to publicize that resource here, but I still suspect that very few WikiProject Oregon contributors are aware of it. (Of course, those who live outside the Portland–Vancouver metropolitan area can't obtain a Mult Co Library card.) P.S. – I hope you'll resist the temptation to "templatize" the citations for which I didn't use templates, or least the 1972 and 1951 articles, because I don't know of any way to include – presented in a very clear way – the contextual info. I included in those two. I believe that info. is helpful and worth giving, especially for sources not available online (except to library cardholders). Benson Bubblers

Can a picture be a reference? This picture clearly shows a Benson Bubbler in front of Benson High.

Also, the water bureau article seems to me to be a bit ambiguous. It says that the bubblers are "mostly" downtown and that there are two "notable" exceptions. That sounds to me like there might be other non-notable exceptions, for example, the article mentions one in front of Benson's home; I'm not sure if that is downtown or not. And it is quite possible that the specific boundaries of 'downtown' could well be drawn to include the one at Benson High. I think the paragraph needs to be re-written to eliminate the claim that there are only two outside of downtown as that is not supported by the reference, much less by reality on the ground. @YBG: Thanks for dropping a note. Though an image cannot be used as a reference, I am hoping we can find mention of a bubbler at the school in a reliable source. Would you mind taking a stab at rewriting the paragraph so that it makes more sense? In the meantime, I will try to find a source verifying the existence of a fountain at the school. And yes, the bubblers should be included in the fountains article (I can't believe I did not include it before!), perhaps as a separate section with a brief summary? --Another Believer (Talk) 04:27, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Poetry for Young People

Although I'm for having as many articles about Maya Angelou as possible, I don't think this stub is necessary. The volume it describes is just part of a series called "Poetry for Young People". The only sources available about the series are to promote it, such as Amazon or the publishing company website. There is information about the Angelou volume on her webpage (see [diff https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Maya_Angelou&diff=cur&oldid=prev]), and its my intention to create an article about her poetry soon. Weather Machine images

Greetings, Another Believer. I thought it best to talk with you about all this on your user page, since it doesn't directly pertain to whether the Weather Machine (sculpture) should be featured.

There are a lot of separate issues involved with whether we can use these images, and how many, and for what purpose. It's a perfect little microcosm of how complicated copyright law has become, and how complicate Wikipedia policy on images has become as well.

First off, there's the de minimis issue. Any photo reproduction of non-free content is non-free... but sometimes, the reproduction only reproduces such a small portion of the original work, or does so in such a distorted way, that judges typically rule that such reproduction doesn't really count. So, for instance, consider a photo of a cityscape that happens to include a billboard, at an angle, when the billboard is not the primary subject of the photo. I would argue that, even though the billboard is copyrighted, the image isn't a derivative work, since the use is di minimis. (Then again, if you were to crop the photo to include billboard, and use photoshop to change the angle, and then use that photo in an article on the billboard's subject, that would no longer be de minimis.) This photo is clearly a de minimis reproduction. But you have to be careful: one Wikipedian's de minimis usage is another Wikipedian's "clear violation", and these edge cases end up on WP:FFD all the time.

I would not think File:Occupy Portland (Downtown PDX).jpg is a de minimis reproduction of the sculpture, especially not when it's used in an article on that sculpture. But others might disagree with me there.

Another thing to consider is our non-free content criteria, especially criteria 3b and 8. The Cloud Bean article uses both File:Cloud Gate (The Bean) from east'.jpg and File:Bean3.jpg, which are both non-free images due to being derivative works. But they illustrate very different facets of the sculpture. If you saw only one of those, you wouldn't get a real feel for the sculpture without seeing the other. So it's possible that both File:PioneerSquareWeatherMachine.jpg and File:Weather Machine - Portland, Oregon (2013) - 02.JPG could be included in the article, even if both images have to be considered non-free, since they show different "tops" of the sculpture. But again, this is a gray area. (Even though File:Weather Machine, Portland, Oregon (2013) - 3.jpeg shows a different angle, I can't imagine including it as a third image would pass NFCC#3b.)

I know it's frustrating to have obscure copyright issues get in the way of your quality contributions. I've been there myself. If I can help prepare images or advise you on whether a given selection would be kosher, I'm willing to try. All the best, – Quadell (talk) 23:39, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

@Quadell: Thanks for the note. I had included the Occupy Portland image in the sculpture's article because I thought it did a good job providing a sense of scale. The photos of just the sculpture are great, but they do not indicate its size. Perhaps it would be better to remove the image from the sculpture article but keep it at Commons as an Occupy Portland image... I don't know. I would not be offended if any of the images were deleted as the result of consensus, but I do wish they would all be discussed at once rather than randomly over time. I have no idea if the sculpture is copyrighted or not. Thanks again for your assistance, and feel free to keep an eye on the Commons discussions as well. Once the issue has been settled, I would appreciated your help incorporating appropriately-licensed images into the article. I can centralize discussion on Commons regarding all Weather Machine images. But then, even if they are deleted there, the same images may be acceptable here on en.wiki. (En.wiki allows non-free images in some circumstances, but Commons never does.) So I can at least keep all discussion in one place on Commons, and in one place on en.wiki. These are all good ideas (especially the food carts). Since the Vancouver meetup, I have been trying to create or to improve articles of NRHP sites so we can become a red state; just kidding, not really a RED state. I have been thinking about visiting the state archives and working on a huge list of Donation Land Claims in the Oregon Territory, maybe even a list of homesteads in Oregon. Also, the National Archives has microfilm on interesting things that should be in list form on Wikipedia. That sort of digging should be sponsored by a scholarship from the Wikimedia Foundation. Washington School for the Blind

I added some additional history research to your initial article. Some additional notations also. I will add more later.

You might be interested in some pictures at the Clark County Historical Museum, of the original building for the State School for Defective Youth, which included the blind (later separated and moved into the building you highlighted). Use of talk header

Although it's of little consequence, I'm not sure why you added the {{talk header}} template back into Talk:Marc Emery after I removed it, but it wasn't designed as a perma-tag, it was designed to help new editors on highly active, controversial pages. The page has been all but dead since April 2012, with the only contribution since then from a long term contributor (who doesn't need the talk header template) whose only action was to copy a discussion over to the talk page. I will acknowledge that you seem to be using the template in a different way than it was intended, which is acceptable, but a bit confusing. Viriditas (talk) 03:35, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

@Viriditas: Thanks for commenting. When I edited the talk page, I was doing so having not seen your previous edit. I have the article on my watchlist, so I noticed that an edit had been made to the talk page, but I did not review the edit in detail. I simply clicked on the talk page and immediately noticed that it did not have a talk header template, and felt the talk page could use one. It is for one of the reasons you mentioned, controversy, that I justified the need for the talk header template. Emery, to me, is a controversial person, or at least someone who is known for his work in a controversial field. If you feel the template is not necessary, please feel free to remove. I'll leave it for now. I like the idea that our templates can be considered multiuse. But, I don't think the template was intended for controversial pages by itself, it was intended to help new editors navigate through the maze of policies and guidelines while participating in controversial pages. Streetcar Snapshot

Sorry, but my reaction to this campaign is along the lines of "Oh, great, just what Commons needs: a lot of photos of the streetcar taken in poor lighting and poor weather." January is a really bad time of year for urban photography of subjects that are present year-round (unlike Christmas-related subjects). The weather is much more likely to be poor, and when the sun is out, it is very low in the sky, making the shade-sun mix (hard to avoid in urban settings with lots of tall buildings around) enough to ruin photos. Although I'm an avid transit photographer and take hundreds of transit photos between May and October every year, I typically take almost none between November and February unless they are event-dependent (e.g., I photographed the Portland Vintage Trolley last weekend, because this coming Sunday will be the final day of VT service ever), for those reasons. @SJ Morg: Thanks for your feedback. I am sorry to read your reaction to the project. You were actually who I was thinking about when I was working on the project page, hoping you might be interested in contributing. It appears that is not the case, which of course is fine but slightly disappointing. You raise good points, but I might add that having pictures from all times of the year can be valuable. If you have time to contribute to the project in any way (even suggestions on the project page like unillustrated stations or cars, etc.), that's fantastic, but if not, I understand. Weather Machine is a lumino-kinetic bronze sculpture in the U.S. city of Portland, Oregon that serves as a weather beacon, displaying a daily weather prediction at noon. Designed and constructed at a cost of $60,000 by Omen Design Group Inc., the approximately 30-foot (9 m) tall sculpture was installed in 1988 in the northwest corner of Pioneer Courthouse Square. Two thousand people attended its dedication, which was broadcast live nationally from the square by Today weatherman Willard Scott. During its daily two-minute sequence, which includes a trumpet fanfare, mist and flashing lights, the machine displays one of three metal symbols as a prediction of the weather for the following 24-hour period: a sun for clear and sunny weather, a blue heron for drizzle and transitional weather, or a dragon and mist for rainy or stormy weather. The sculpture includes two bronze wind scoops and displays the temperature via vertical colored lights along its stem.
