Centralized TV Episode Discussion

Over the past months, TV episodes have been reverted by (to name a couple) TTN, Eusebeus and others. No centralized discussion has taken place, so I'm asking everyone who has been involved in this issue to voice their opinions here in this centralized spot, be they pro or anti. Discussion is here [1]. --Maniwar (talk) 00:28, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

BA flight 38 news (History merge)

As posted on User talk:Woody#BA flight 38 news:

It looks like I was one of 3 people who started articles on this. My article was quickly merged & redirected by User:Edward which was good. I come back an hour later and the article history doesn't reflect the early article creation history that I remember. What happened? Astronaut (talk) 15:44, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

I merged the histories because your article was copied and pasted over onto the other article. For gfdl reasons, all edits have to be attributed which is why I had to merge the histories. There were 4 articles, 3 of which eventually ended up being copy and paste versions of each other. Hope this helps. Woody (talk) 15:49, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Burj Dubai (Countries)

As posted on User talk:Leitmanp#Burj Dubai:

Hi, I noticed to reverted a change with "Toronto is considered a world-renowned city; country not necessary", but the IP-editor removed the country - your edit actually added the country back into the article. Was that a mistake or did you get the summary wrong? Astronaut (talk) 02:28, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for catching that Astronaut. I guess I just got confused. Now I do not know if I should return it back to its former state, or keep its current state. What do you think? Keep "Canada," or get rid of it? Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 02:34, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
As posted on User talk:Leitmanp#Burj Dubai:
I've nearly fallen for that one too - reading the difference the wrong-way-round. Anyway I'm in favour of dropping the country (and perhaps state/province as well) for major world cities ie. country capitals, and some other big cities like Toronto, Chicago, Shanghai, New York City, etc. If readers really don't know where these cities are, they can always click on the wikilink. As for "Canada", I suggest we Blame Canada :-) Astronaut (talk) 02:42, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

On the other hand, Wikipedia's MAnual of Style might have something to say about that. Astronaut (talk) 02:44, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

I agree. The country name should be removed for cities such as Toronto. I will remove it right now. Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 03:00, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

BARB share

I don’t understand how hard it is to read the page properly, AnimeCentral doesn’t even have a share of 0.0% it has a share of * whilst channels like DMAX+1 & Five Life+1 do have a share of 0.0%. Like i have said before giving the channel 0.0% is being generous so stop changing it. Furthermore Wiki is not a TV guide so stop putting times next to the shows. --AJFurnell (talk) 18:53, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Further discussion continued at User talk:AJFurnell, but I archived that toTalk:AnimeCentral#Audience Share

Burj Dubai gallery

Hi, you undid my edit in Burj Dubai article and gave the following explanation: Undid good faith edit to gallery- Specifying perrow="5" just didn't look good on narrower windows

If I may ask, what are these "narrower windows" and what browser are you using? Br, --Siipikarja 22:07, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

My screen is 1024 pixels wide, but I usually browse with a window less than the full width of the screen (perhaps 800 pixels). With the gallery 5 pictures wide, it causes a horizontal scrollbar to appear. Astronaut (talk) 00:41, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Ok. Thanks. --Siipikarja 10:51, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Which University?

Just one question, you may not really need to answer this question; do you attend Glamorgan University?????

MidAmerica St. Louis Airport

Grandone (talk) 04:42, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Greetings Astronaut:

I just saw what you wrote regarding my clumsy attempt to add information to the Wikipedia listing of MidAmerca St. Louis Airport. I was merely stating facts and citing reputable newspaper article (well it WAS a Pulitzer paper when I wrote it).

At any rate, I erred by not looking at the rules regarding input, for which I genuinely apologize and will follow from now on. As I am no longer representing the airport, the COI does not apply and as a former daily newspaper reporter, I believe my additions are neutral and factual with no opinion whatsoever. All the facts are verifiable.

I just wanted to write a thank you note for your guidance in this matter. I appreciate it.

Jim

P.S. How do I hide my URL?

As posted on User talk:Grandone#Your comment:
I was going to write:
"I'm a little puzzled by your comment on my talk page. I don't recall making any edits to St. Louis Airport. Do you have the correct person?",
...but I found what you mean now - wow, in Wikipedia terms that was a long time ago! Thank you for the comment.
As per your request, I have gone back in the archive and removed your personal URL, though I have left in the airport's URL.

Burj Dubai, Al Burj Confusion

I noticed you undid my deletion - it was done because my post was no longer relevant. Oh, and thank you for pointing out my confusion over Burj Dubai and Al Burj. :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Epak (talkcontribs) 03:46, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I thought it was vandalism (you forgot to sign in, so the edit was attributed to 190.40.134.20). I won't revert, but someone else might. Astronaut (talk) 05:07, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Simon Bruce.

Ok thanks.. Im going down the list . the talbott reference was one of the youtube links, as it was recorded on tv. and there are many references to the south by southwest age thing on his website under reviews, i am just trying to figure out how to do all this. --Sarahmckem (talk) 16:19, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Apostrophes

As posted on User talk:Colonies Chris/Archive/2008/Apr#Apostrophes:

I noticed in your recent edit to the Malo Korrigan article, you changed some (but not all) of the apostrophes. Just curious, but what was wrong with the original apostrophe characters? Astronaut (talk) 18:22, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Astronaut - The use of straight apostrophes rather than curly apostrophes or back ticks or other variations is recommended in the Manual of Style, partly because they're available on all keyboards, partly because using only one form makes searching more reliable. If not all of them were fixed, it's because I use a regex that catches most occurrences but sometimes misses some. Colonies Chris (talk) 22:43, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
As posted on User talk:Colonies Chris/Archive/2008/Apr#Apostrophes:
Well spotted (I had to look again and pretty closely to tell the difference). Funnily enough, when I created the text, I used the only apostrophe on my keyboard. I would have thought it produced ASCII character 39 (0x27). Do you think my OS (Vista), browser (IE 7) or the wiki editing window would have turned it into some strange curved apostrophe? Astronaut (talk) 01:29, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Your theory about automatic conversion is probably right. Word does this by default, so other WP software is probably similar. There's a discussion of this at Apostrophe#Computing that might be useful. Colonies Chris (talk) 09:49, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:YouveComeALongWayBaby.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:YouveComeALongWayBaby.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:20, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

The image was replaced on the article by a somewhat larger one in this edit. Unfortunately, the replacement image had no fair use rationale, so I undid that change to You've Come a Long Way, Baby. The replacement image is now itself up for deletion for not having a fair use rationale and for being orphaned! Astronaut (talk) 12:40, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Reusing BurjDubaiHeight.png

Hi Astronaut. I'm working on a rewrite of oil tanker and I'd like to create a new image based on your en:Image:BurjDubaiHeight.png. I realized however that there is a licensing issue preventing me from doing so. Basically, I want to take the largest silhouette from Image:Bateaux comparaison2.svg and place it on your chart. However that image is under a creative commons license, so the two can't be combined.

Would you consider licensing your image under both GFDL and CC with the a template such as {{self |cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0|GFDL}}? Cheers. HausTalk 11:18, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Absolutely no problem, but is there really a licensing issue? I thought GFDL gave anyone the right to "copy, distribute and/or modify" and that includes making derivative works. However, if it makes life simpler for you, I have added "cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0" to Image:BurjDubaiHeight.png like you suggested.
I am assuming you have no intention of adding an oil tanker to the Burj Dubai diagram (I think that would be inappropriate for a skyscraper article and will almost certainly be quickly reverted), but please feel free go ahead and make a new diagram for your work on oil tanker or anywhere else.
Astronaut (talk) 12:03, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks a bundle! The licensing issue is thorny, if you're interested there are discussions here and here. And no, I have no intention of changing what appears on the Burj Dubai page. :) Cheers. HausTalk 12:12, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Korean Teacher on HD

As posted on User talk:Bfigura/Archive 4#To help, but the answer is no.:

Sorry to butt in, but this user has cross-posted very similar messages to several pages, including twice on the Wikipedia:Help desk. Astronaut (talk) 23:48, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

No worries. I think I answered one of his earlier help desk queries, which is why he's here. Still, I seem to recall seeing that this article got deleted over on ko.wiki, so I'm not thinking it's really a viable article. (Although the links documenting that seem to have gotten wiped with the deletion of these articles). --Bfigura (talk) 23:54, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Burj Dubai Top Floor

Hi astronaut. As I have also listed on my page it says top floor 624.1 meters right under the picture of the Burj Dubai where it lists a spire height of 818 meters and a Roof height. Underneath the roof heigt is where the false information is listed, so stop giving false information. Thank You.Maldek (talk) 20:03, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

No it doesn't. It says "Antenna/Spire ~818 m (2,684 ft), Roof ~643.3 m (2,111 ft), Top floor ~636.9 m (2,090 ft)" Astronaut (talk) 20:07, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
Crap. That was your figure in there. I have removed the 624.1 m until the issue is resolved. But, increasing the height to the fictional 636.9 m is NOT the right solution to this problem. Astronaut (talk) 20:13, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Commons usurpation request

The Usurpation request contains the following:

=== Astronaut11 to Astronaut ===
My username (on English Wikipedia) is usually Astronaut, but here on Commons I find that username has already been created and used just once to upload a single image back in May 2006 (and that image is used only on a user's page on the Greek Wikipedia). So, would it be possible to rename Astronaut11 to Astronaut?
Many thanks,

Script questions

As posted on User talk:Ziggy Sawdust#Script questions:

Hi Ziggy, a couple of questions about your script:

  1. Looking at one if the recent edits the script appears to have made a lot of differences without a change to the text. What's going on there?
  2. Is it appropriate to label the change in the edit summary "uber-god script"?

Astronaut (talk) 10:55, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I have a User:Ziggy Sawdust/monobook.js script that, when I'm editing a page, adds a "format" tab to the top of the screen. It doesn't do much, but it does correct some things like headlines and whatnot. Ziggy Sawdust 16:17, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
