Articles

Hi, can you start any of the following? Need to clear red links before Amelia Bence hits GAR.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:31, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

The Bence article claims San Miguel Studios became the biggest film studio in Argentina. That might take some investigation as I'd thought Lumiton and SONO dominated.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:39, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

Great job! Much appreciated. The only other one which I think worth doing is Pablo Podestá. He had an award named after him and also a town in Buenos Aires Province. Seems to be a very notable figure in Argentina. I don't know whether it would be best to expand the bio and have a section on the Podesta Award in it or a summary and a main article on it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:44, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

Can you find anything on Sylvaner Award? It's just in the Rod Steiger article I mention he won them for TV work in the early 50s but I couldn't find anything about it. Let me know if you can find anything, is it a misspelling perhaps for something else?.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:20, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Five minutes to help make WikiProjects better

Hello!

First, on behalf of WikiProject X, thank you for trying out the WikiProject X pilot projects. I would like to get some anonymous feedback from you on your experience using the new WikiProject layout and tools. This way, we will know what we did right, and if we did something horribly wrong, we can try to fix it. This feedback won't be associated with your username, so please be completely honest. We are determined to improve the experience of Wikipedians, and your feedback helps us with that. (You are also welcome to leave non-anonymous feedback at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject X.)

Please complete the survey here. The survey has two parts: the first part asks for your username, while the second part contains the survey questions. These two parts are stored separately, so your username will not be associated with your feedback. There are only nine questions and it should not take very long to complete. Once you complete the survey I will leave a handwritten note on your talk page as a token of my appreciation.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Harej (talk) 17:49, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Vereinigte Glanzstoff-Fabriken, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ede. Newbies

I'm sure there's many editors here who'd qualify for that image on their user page!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:14, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

Can you expand Martina Ibaibarriaga? Seems unusual that a woman would have served as a soldier during that period. Two missing battles it seems too?♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:24, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

  • An amusing one. There are various reliable-sounding sources, but the dates do not match up. It seemed that she went to war in August 1808 and gathered a guerrilla band. It was broken up but she was allowed to serve under the guerrilla leader Longa for the rest of the war. Then she joined the army disguised as a man, rose rapidly through the ranks, and was a colonel when she was wounded in Zaragoza early in 1809. A very eventful six months. Then I checked the Spanish wiki and it all became clear. The Basque wiki still has the legend. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:10, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
Excellent work. Disguised as a man explains it, though as you say, it is only legend. I guess if she looked anything like a 90s Arantxa Sanchez that wouldn't be too difficult!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:22, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Gregory Kohs, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Can't make the section link work properly

The problem you were having is not (necessarily) the link you were trying to use, it's because there are collapsed tables farther up the page from your target section. Most, if not all, browsers render the tables and then collapse them, shifting all the text up, so you're no longer looking at the right section. I assume this bug has been reported, since it's been around for months if not years; not sure it's something MediaWiki developers can fix, though. - dcljr (talk) 19:53, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

BTW, for convenience sake, it's best to avoid characters like "|" and "=" in section headings. - dcljr (talk) 19:57, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. I'll take a look at Levinson tomorrow, if you're sure it's reasonably comprehensive we might be able to push it through to GA. Great job.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:07, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

  • It is not close to a good article. It just summarizes what various opinionated and poorly researched books about the mob and the Kennedy assassinations have to say about the subject. "LBJ knew someone who knew Levinson who knew someone who knew Bobby Kennedy who hated LBJ, which proves..." There are too many gaps and far too many contradictory statements in the sources. Basically a mess. Aymatth2 (talk) 01:24, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

Thank you for your recent articles, including Compagnie des mines d'Anzin, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information about using those talk page templates. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 15:28, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Aymatth2;

I've been seeing your signature in my Watchlist and admiring the great work you've been doing on a number of articles that overlap with my own interests, especially the American "friends of China." Just now I came across your article Philip Jaffe, which fills a gaping hole. I had been developing a Jaffe article in my userspace that has some further sources and material. Please feel free to use any of it: Philip Jaffe draft article.

This should be a good DYK candidate.

Are you in North America and might you be a member of the Association for Asian Studies? If so, let's talk: I've been thinking for a long time that professional Asia societies should take some responsibility in curating Wikipedia articles. Any ideas?

A new kind of thanks for your work and for your generosity in acknowledging my smaller role, since the Jaffe article started with your filling out a redlink! ch (talk) 16:32, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

Reviewing Senghenydd colliery disaster and spotted this, looks like it should have an article. Coal Mines Act 1911 and Pioneer (newspaper) too. They're not red linked but I think would be better stubbed at least than not linked. The association needs starting even if the the others arne't as I believe I've also read about it in my book on Barry. There's a few articles which could be created from within that which might be interesting. No worries though if you want to crack on with your French stuff of which there seems to be an infinite amount of missing articles! BTW I'm considering opening a PR on Barry Docks, I think it has FA potential.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:59, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Woollen industry in Wales is definitely a core article!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:57, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

  • The core article in my view. Wales is known only for sheep, coal mines and Lloyd George. And Jimbo, of course. Aymatth2 (talk) 00:57, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

Just like Canada is only known for lakes, bears and ice hockey right ;-)?♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:53, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

  • Well, there is not much else up here in the Great White North apart from Trudeau, who has been prime minister for as long as I can remember. Aymatth2 (talk) 10:58, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

Woollen industry

Another possible source? I mention it because I noticed that your list of Cistercian abbeys doesn't include Tintern - perhaps because in some older sources it wasn't regarded as being in Wales - and I know it was important in establishing sheep farming. Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:27, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

  • Good point. Tintern is mentioned later, for the high quality of its wool, but since it was the first and was so important, it belongs at the front of the list. This is turning out to be a huge subject. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:47, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
I don't understand your edit here. The logical order of text is that "the weaving industry shifted to villages in south-west Wales.. [and] skilled workers moved to... Carmarthenshire". Carmarthen - the centre of the area - in turn became a weaving town (as the industry became more industrialised and moved out of the villages), and Chartism developed there. Ghmyrtle (talk) 12:07, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
  • I was trying to stay chronological. There was weaving in south-west Wales from the pre-industrial period, and some industrialization had happened before 1860, hence the 1839 Chartism. With the decline in mid Wales in the 1860s and growth of the south Wales coalfields, the south-west became the main centre of weaving. Maybe the wording could be tweaked and more detail added. I will keep expanding, but may first start some related articles first. E.g. modern mills to get more about "today", older mills to get more about specific industrial mill towns and regions, Shrewsbury Drapers Company to get more about the medieval period. Aymatth2 (talk) 12:21, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for a link you inserted to the article on Shrewsbury Drapers' Company. More importantly, thanks for the article. Sjwells53 (talk) 21:09, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Sheriffs of Glamorganshire

I remember there was a big list a while back. One very notable person you could start is Robert Jenner (Glamorgan) (Sheriff in 1800) or even Jenner family (Wales). He was very notable I think, might have been him or another in his family who had his seat at Wenvoe Castle. There is district of Barry Jenner Park and Jenner Park Stadium named after him. The Jenner family were really quite central figures the history of the county. I think later on they partly financed part of the railway and docks development. It might have been Robert's wife or another in that family who was a social/suffrage reformer too, quite interesting when you look into it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:06, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for that. Don't know how much can be found on him, it might be another Jenner later on which is more notable. Another Robert Jenner presumably his son. Every local history book documents the Jenners though. If you google book search Jenner Glamorgan you should see haha! It might be worth one on the family overall as I'm sure a lot of them won't have much bio info. Very important for South Wales I think as the sources on them would piece together a staggering amount of local places and events. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:20, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Wenvoe Castle in 1899

There was some very interesting local stuff on the medieval lords of the area when I was researching Wrinstone, which is very close to Wenvoe and that tunnel. The Raleighs and Reigny's earlier on I think ran Wrinstone manor, but the history seems to be blurred with that of Wenvoe Castle or Wallston Castle. There are still the ruins of Wallston Castle in the area, a beefeater restaurant is now called that.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:35, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

  • I suspect the later Jenners are mainly notable for their descent from Peter Birt of Airmyn, Yorkshire. A rumour was current in Glamorgan in 1777 to the effect that Birt had not been born a gentleman but had been "bred a tailor". Still, he made a great deal of money from operating coal barges, built a new Wenvoe Castle near the site of the old Winwere, otherwise Wenno, or Wenvoe Castle, and was appointed High Sheriff of Glamorgan, as were three of his Jenner descendants who inherited the castle. Aymatth2 (talk) 20:10, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I associate the Jenners more with the Industrial Revolution and business wealth than aristocracy. The Thomas family were quite dominant in the Vale further back, I believe they once held Wenvoe at one time. De Sully is another notable one, which gives its name to Sully, Vale of Glamorgan.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:38, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

"Robert Francis Lascelles Jenner (1826–83), his eldest son, was Chairman of the Barry Railway Company, incorporated on 5 July 1865 to build a 7.75 miles (12.47 km) mixed-gauge line to Barry from Peterston on the South Wales Railway. The project failed to get off the ground due to lack of funding." Ah that's the one I was thinking of, though I knew a Robert Jenner (the one you started) held Wenvoe too, I just thought it was one person, Robert Jenner. His son might have a bit more written about him. I think your 2016 source though lifted that bit of info about him being chairman directly from the 1984 Barry centenary book! I think though the Robert Jenner I referred to in the Pencoedtre article was Robert Francis Jenner's father as he'd have only been 8 at the time. If you look further back on the sheriff list his father (presumably) was Sheriff in 1800. You'd think Robert was the only name they had in those days ;-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:08, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Kalo in Hawaii

The article Kalo in Hawaii has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Proposal for Merging article with taro was completed after 0 objections since May 2014. Article is now redundant with merged article.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
