City/town

Re this edit. In Lithuania the status of city/town/village is defined by law. The status is changed by the Seimas. I agree that to a casual reader Kupiškis does not seem much of a city, but it is. Renata (talk) 16:07, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

List of cities in Lithuania and List of towns in Lithuania. In general, each country defines cities separately. For large, populous countries 100k might be a reasonable threshold, but for smaller countries like Lithuania, it's way to high. Renata (talk) 16:17, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Aras River to Aras (river)?

What is the benefit of this? One normally writes [[Aras River]] instead of [[Aras (river)|Aras River]]. Most British Rivers don't take the River but nearly all US rivers do, and most foreign ones for clarity. There may be a good reason for this, but I don't know what it is. Romanian rivers

Happy new year to you! I see our Romanian friend is still creating these. It would be different if he created a few of them at least with something to say about them. We're not a map. The German sub stubs at least can be translated and expanded with information. Hi Bermicourt. I haven't looked at much of your work until very recently. I am amazed at both quantity and quality of the articles you create. Very impressive. And my recent batch of bare minimum stubs hopelessly pale in comparison.

I hope you don't mind but I have removed flag icons from several of your most recent creations, citing the MOS guideline MOS:INFOBOXFLAG. It's been a little ongoing endeavor of mine the last couple years to remove flag icons from geographic infoboxes. I think I'm at about 6,000 articles now in which I have removed them.

If it at all interests you, lately there have been discussions at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Icons#WP:INFOBOXFLAG question, and more recently at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Proposal regarding flag icons in infoboxes, involving proposed changes to the wording and to the intent of the guideline itself.

I notice you recently created the category Category:Gorges of Austria and Category:Gorges of Germany. Would you mind if I changed them to Category:Canyons and gorges of Austria and Category:Canyons and gorges of Germany to match the parent/sibling categories of these. This would be regardless whether there are canyons in these countries and removing the valley parents as a valley is something different than these landforms. DNB

This is just a reminder. The template {{DNB}} links to the Dictionary of National biography. I notice that you created and alternative Template:DNB portal which is now named template:German National Library portal, but it must have escaped you mind because recently you used {{DNB}} in Heckengäu, Herzogenhorn and some others (about half a dozen which I am fixing using AWB). -- PBS (talk) 08:23, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

I don't think a move is a good idea, DNB like ONDB are commonly used expressions in English language encyclopaedias. {{DNB}} is used on 7,800 articles with another 8,500 for {{cite DNB}}. There is a whole project based around it, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Dictionary of National Biography.

What I can do fairly easily is alter the script to produce an error message if DNB is used with an unamed parameter, as it is a wrapper around {{cite encyclopedia}} and that calls the CS1 module written in Lua, the module defaults to an error anyway, it is just at the moment the unamed parameter is altered and assigned to a named parameter called wstitle, I have been meaning to remove the link for a couple of years now, and this is a good reason to implement it. -- PBS (talk) 16:06, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

There is an article on the German wiki called Jeepomotive which could use some translation skills, preferably by someone with some knowledge of railroading. The page's creator used a newspaperman's nonce word to describe the switch engines, speeders (i.e. draisines), and light locomotives that were converted from jeeps during WWII, and a great deal of creative license with the sources; my language skills are enough to recognize a problem, but not to fix it, especially if it comes down to a dispute. Cryptophyte ambiguous link

Thank you for your cleanup work at Ipomoea_oenotherae. In 3 edits in this diff you fixed up a lot. I arrive at the article, however, because the Cryptophyte link that you added is ambiguous, and thus it shows up in worklists(*) for the wp:DPL group that works to eliminate links to disambiguation pages, Wikipedia-wide. The project is within 6 months of succeeding, I figure. Could you possibly take another look at that? I have it teed up for you here in the following link: DabSolver tool applied to "Ipomoea_oenotherae" article. Just click on the ambiguous term that is highlighted, and select the intended meaning, from options on the disambiguation page. If the meaning you meant is not on the disambiguation page, and is a worthy topic for the Wikipedia, it would be great if you could convert your link to a redlink like "Cryptophyte (other meaning)".

Hmm. I would fix it myself but I am not knowledgeable about this area. The second meaning on the dab page Cryptophyte seems incorrect. The first meaning given, Raunkiær plant life-form, seems incorrect, because that is about a whole system. So maybe linking more specifically to Raunkiær plant life-form#Cryptophytes would be it? But then I would prefer to see a redirect created from Cryptophyte (multi-celled) or something to that section. And for the dab page itself be edited to offer that.

If you could fix this up this situation, it would be most appreciated. Otherwise it is likely that some other editor will "fix" it incorrectly. Either way, thanks for your attention, and keep up the good work. :) --doncram 19:25, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

(Plantdrew is a botanist and might be able/willing to resolve this...please?) Yes, I would not make the mistake to judge that editors high up on the list are being careless, although some are. You're just contributing very valuable but complicated stuff, which necessarily brings up some linking questions. You can always try posting at a relevant WikiProject to get help, to preclude their being "fixed" by relatively uninformed others (who may just unlink them). BTW, I hope to build up a system that notifies each Wikiproject of ambiguous links within their domain for them to fix, which would be more efficient way of calling in experts. (My first try is ongoing with wp:SHIPS, which seems to be going okay at their Talk page, as a trial.) Hello, I was going through the unused templates, and came across your BibIsbn templates. I've read that this template does not work on the English Wikipedia, but I see three BibIsbn templates in Category:Template:BibISBN. You have added BibISBN templates to Hagen Mountains, Bratschenköpfe, Lamkopf, and other articles, even though the template documentation specifically says that it should not be used. Why are you doing that? I have fixed {{BibISBN/9783763311279}} for you, but if you are going to use this template, please make sure it does not leave error messages for other editors to fix. There are only nine article links to this template, three of which I didn't create, so that's possibly a slight over-reaction, but thank you for correcting the ones you found. Actually, I don't consciously "add" them; they get imported with the text from German Wikipedia and usually work or don't display (so it's difficult to pick up any problem). When you're translating hundreds of articles, it is possible to miss the odd glitch, for which I apologise. Great teamwork though when other sharp eyed editors pick them up and actually do something about them. --Bermicourt (talk) 20:50, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

Hmm. The three articles linked above would have been showing a red template link before you created the BibISBN template in question, and displayed red error messages until I fixed the template in question. Pilgrimage church

Hi Bermicourt. I need your help on this. Pilgrimage is a very important phenomenon in all Christian denominations, and I myself looked up the page looking for distinctly non-Catholic sites. I found it to be a bit of a trap. You are an active editor, so headings and hatnotes are all you need, but to the regular user, being a bit more explicit is quite important; as a user, I'm also quite likely to miss a discrete hint, and I end up, like many others, not getting the info I need, or spending more time on it that I should. According to common sense, as well as to WP guidelines, it's the common user we should care most about - if not exclusively. Now the "article" looks like a minuscule dog with a huge cat's tail: a bare-bones lead with a very large, very selective and particular list attached to it. You might be right and highly articulate ("tautology"), but the user might have thanked me for the additional information and looked up under those links what pilgrimage sites and habits non-RC Christians have. I won't argue, let alone fight with you over this, so since you care about this article, please do come up with some more info for the user, ideally with some links to other non-RC denominations and their pilgrimage traditions. In my opinion, judging but what WP standards are, the "List of RC pilgrimage churches" should be moved to a page all of its own, and the very rich topic of Christian pilgrimage SITES, rather than churches (a bit wider; for instance, many quintessential Christian pilgrimage sites, such as the oldest traditional ones of the baptism of Jesus, the ascension of Jesus, the tomb of Lazarus, the hall of the Last Supper, etc., etc., are not inside churches) should receive far more detail and attention. As you can see, for "Christian pilgrimage sites" we also have a separate list. Quite remarkable is that we don't have a good page on Christian pilgrimage - that one's also strictly-RC. As food for thought: no hint in the Gospels at Jesus intentionally creating any pilgrimage traditions; you might know better if in the Acts or the Epistles there's anything on it, but I don't think so. So it looks very much like a development rooted in outside traditions. Or the habit of locals to go to pilgrimage sites of whatever denomination and even religion and pray for help, as part of "folk religion". Very rich topics, nothing to do with lists, which add little to understanding a deeply human and religious phenomenon. A lot of work to be done - viel Spass dabei! King George IV

Hello Bermicourt
I notice you reverted an edit I made on the Wilseder Berg page, restoring the link [[George IV of the United Kingdom|King George IV of England]] with the redit summary “more usual way of describing”
I had a couple of questions about this: On a practical note, the article linked to is at George IV “of the United Kingdom”, and George IV “of England” is a redirect, so half of that link is redundant anyway.
But more puzzling to me is, why do you say "of England" is more usual? AFAIK "King George IV of England" is neither particularly common, nor very accurate; after 1801 the king was ruler of a United Kingdom, not just England, and even before that monarchs from 1707 were "of Great Britain" (leaving aside the personal union of crowns going back to Henry II). And the most usual way of describing him is simply as "King George IV"; there haven't been any other Georges of that number in Europe, so he's the only one it could be. What's the thinking, here? “Sounded very odd”: Well, fair enough; part of the reason I changed it in the first place was that it looked odd to me. But the google search for "George IV of England" was a bit of a surprise; I suppose people have been using England as a synecdoche for the UK as a whole. (Unless there's an implied criticism there, following the rule If we win, it's “Another triumph for Great Britain”; if not, it's “England loses again”).

It would be nice if we weren't perpetuating an inaccuracy, but it seems there are getting on for a hundred pages that link to George IV of England (the redirect) so it looks like a bigger problem than just here.

Annexation or reannexation

Hi, I saw your on the article about the German empire and I don't agree with you. What happened in 1871 was indeed an annexation. The HRE was not Germany nor the German empire, but a political and geographic different entity. Otherwise what is going to be the limit? Back at the time of the HRE, many parts of Italy, Danemark, Poland, and France were part of it. Furthermore, the south of the region was belonging to the hasbourg that sold the Haute Alsace to France with the Westphalia treaties, and Austria was not part of the HRE. Legally in virtue of international laws a reannexation is among the time limit of a continuous political existing state. One can say that France annexed Alsace from the HRE, or that Germany in 1941 reannexed Alsace-Moselle since the Weimar and the third reich are a continuity of the German empire, but I don't think that the word is correct for this particular case. Anyhow, I won't spent a long of time arguing with you, since that will not change anything, but I wanted to express my point of view on your modification.--Gabriel HM (talk) 18:09, 18 March 2016 (UTC)

It is nice, did you wanted this name to mean something in French or did you just want to sound like a typical French name? For Saint Louis I clearly want to add, that I did not started an edit war, and I engaged the discussion on the talk page, and opened the administration notice board procedure. Furthermore, if I was the kind of guy that the other user is saying I would have tried to change the names of all cities and not just one. And at last, from the beginning I said that the city was named after Saint Louis by Louis XIV. You teach me something I was not aware of the name, eventhough it sounds very French indeed. I have never been on the WWI ground eventhough I would love to. For your comment about the Franco-German border, the article was empty and was starting in 1918. It just added facts with wiki links to the differents events. There is nothing but the facts, once again, I'm not a troll nor a freak obsessed with some kind of will to change to past or the present. Procedure for complaint against insults and mean comments

Hi, since you have been nice and fair, could you give the link to lodge a complaint against another user (Eric). The comments that he made in several posts are insulting, mean, and disrespectful. Ex"as you claimed several times in your peevish, chaotic edit summaries. Before you continue to waste your time and ours with unsubstantiated claims" eventhough I was right.. Or That, combined with his level of English, make him a high-maintenance editor here, I asked him gently to stop this kind of comment on his talk page but he ended saying that my French was very bad (even thought I'm a French native speaker with a law degree), that I was talking nonsense and to go away. Since you are using the English wiki more than me, you should have the correct link to lodge a complaint. It would be nice. If you have tried to discuss this with the editor concerned and got nowhere, you could take your complaint here. However, you need to be sure you're squeaky clean because they will also look at your comments and actions. I've never used this process because I prefer to focus on the issue and not the person, although I will ask people not to be personal or rude. Doesn't always work, mind you! HTH. I currently have nominated three BibISBN templates that aren't used. However, I've found articles that use BibISBN, and another BibISBN template that is actually been used. Drainage basin categories and progressions

Hi Bermicourt, I like the system for drainage basin categories you've been creating, based on German wikipedia. I couldn't find the discussion about it (except this Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Rivers/Archive_3#Basin_category_structure), but I think it would be nice to expand this to other countries than Germany. Do you know whether there's consensus to do so? I also thought of an easy way to create the "progression" field of the {{Infobox river}}: see for instance Ahne (Fulda), which uses {{RFulda}}, which uses {{PFulda}}, which uses {{PWeser}}. You see it's a combination of those progressions and the basin categories. Before, I tried simply adding [[Category:Weser drainage basin|1]] to PWeser, but of course that also shows up in all articles calling PFulda. If I understand the category system correctly, articles of rivers that have their own basin category (like the Fulda) are not categorized into the basin category of their parent river (the Weser in this case), only the category is in that parent category. So those rivers should use a P template, not an R template. Do you think this could be useful? Markussep ^Talk 14:16, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

I also made a documentation template for drainage basin categories {{Category doc drainage basin}}, based on what you added to Category:Leine drainage basin and many other categories, probably translated from German wikipedia. See Category:Fulda drainage basin for example. I updated it partly to the English Wikipedia situation, probably we need to define another responsible Wikiproject, since I don't think WP:GEOGRAPHY is involved. Well just thanks for adding the content at the article for relief energy. I couldn't find anything about it at all on my searches around, so that is ALWAYS the best solution to add content, so 1 hat is duly doffed here (and I closed the discussion as withdrawn by nominator). I did have "not sure you are the expert" and I hope you didn't take that to mean that I were not sure you were the expert (i.e. saying you were incompetent), patently you are and expert advice is always the best, I just missed a comma not to say "not sure, you are the expert" or "not sure, because Bermicourt is the expert".
