A Question

[edit]

How do I nominate a page for deletion? The nomination page seems needlessly convoluted. Can you please explain it in simpler language? I would greatly appreciate it. Shimaspawn 00:24, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure I can! Ok.
Basically, first you need to make sure the article really needs deleting- if it's an attack page or nonsense page, consider putting a speedy delete tag on it- I'll give you the links for that in a minute.
Otherwise, if you want to nominate an article, it's pretty much common sense, however, as you know, there are guidelines found at Wikipedia:Deletion policy.
If it's suitable for deletion, it may be because it's not encyclopedic, it is just something someone made up, it fails other guidelines, links found here, a vandalism page (not just have been vandalised, but was created for the sole purpose of vandalism), or even if it will never amount to more than a couple of sentences.
To nominate an article for deletion-
Firstly make sure it can't be improved or re-written.
Then-
Read up on these links- they may help you in the process.
Put on the top of the page, and in the edit summary, type this: nominated for deletion: see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName. Replace pagename with the page you just nominated for deletion.
Save the page. When the page re-loads, you should see the deletion tag at the top of the page. On this tag there will be a link to an AFD page, found in bold on the second line (You may share your thoughts on the matter at this article's entry on the Articles for deletion page. Click on that link.
This will take you straight to a blank AFD page. Start editing this page by putting in this text: ~~~~, replacing 'PageName' with the name of the page you just nominated for deletion, 'Category' with the letter symbolising the category of the discussion, letters found here, and 'Reason the page should be deleted' with the reason you are nominating the page for deletion. A good idea is to mention a few policies the page fails.
This time, put this text in the edit summary: "Creating deletion discussion page for PageName because ..." and inserting reasons for nomination. Remember to replace 'PageName' with the name of the page you are nominating for deletion.
Finally, you have to list the page on the appropriate AFD page. To do this, click here and scroll down to Part 3 of the instructions. Click on the 'CLICK HERE' link, and insert the following to the bottom of the page- replacing 'PageName' once more. Include the page's name in your edit summary, and then you're done!
Some articles have already been nominated for deletion. For these articles, place at the top of the page to be deleted instead of . Also, when you list the page on the appropriate AFD page, instead of replacing 'PageName' with the name, type the name of the page with (2nd Nomination), however be sure to only use this on the last step.
I hope that small essay helped you- remember, feel free to ask me any other questions! CattleGirl talk | e@ 11:11, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. This is much easier to follow, especially since it's all in logical order. Shimaspawn 15:35, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A-a-U question

[edit]

Greetings,

Although I am adopted by Lethaniol (and VERY happy about it, he has and still is helping me a lot!), I thought it would be more appropriate to ask you then him. My question is this: with all the discussion going on over at the A-a-U forum and talkspace, would it be appropriate as an adoptee to put my two cents worth in every so often?

On a side note, what in the world are Chiangus? My neighbor has a decent herd of this breed, and in the course of trying to find out what is the difference, I haven't found out much - except that you don't want to be downwind from the farm when they're mucking out the barns.... 8^P

Thanks NDCompuGeek 12:38, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!
Firstly, you can DEFINITELY put your two cents worth over at the discussion. After all, the discussion is to find out what's best for the program for the adopter/adoptee relationship, we need all the input we can get.
Chiangus are Chianina crossed Angus cattle- (and I know what you mean about the smell, it takes a while to get used to!). Here's a few links if you want to know more- [1], [2], [3], [4].
Anyway, once again, definitely go over to the discussion and put in your opinion- it will definitely help! Happy editing- CattleGirl talk | e@ 06:03, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Welcome

[edit]

Thank you for the welcome to Wikipedia. I hope to do a good job editing articles. My areas of expertise are largely those of old World of Darkness rpg games, and I was hoping to do some work cleaning up those articles as well as helping fix general randomness. Thank you for the warm welcome. I'll read through the links you gave me. Oh, one question, how did you get the bits that Wikipedia normally convert to show up as plain text? Thank you again. Hello and Thanks!

[edit]

Thanks for the adoption . . . I promise to be good and hopefully do you proud. I mainly wanted this experience so that I can edit better (since I've already used the wrong tag once!) I like to scour the new changes and revert vandalism but admit I get skittish at times and leave the reverts/edits to a more seasoned editor. I also like to pick random pages to cleanup or revise but I know I still have a long way to go. Any advice for a n00b? I'm sure I'll have questions but at the moment I am still trying to get my bearings.

Thanks very much again - Death666 21:04, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, I'm always happy to help... You already seem to be a pretty good editor, and have been a member since early 2004- [9]. It's really good that you're involved in the vandalism reverting- we need as many users onto that as possible.
The picking random pages is a really good way to gain more experience- not only do you sometimes come across interesting pages, but some pages that need A LOT of work that not many people would visit.
If you want some tools for vandal-fighting, have a look at Wikipedia:Department directory. I tend to use Lupin's tools, as they're pretty easy to use and don't require any installation, but there's a lot more tools out there. The page I linked to above have a lot of categories and backlogs that need looking at, so it's always a good idea to do that too.
If you're ever not sure of anything, either ask another editor like myself, anyone at the Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User program, or Wikipedia:Help desk, or look up the relevant policy pages- they'll usually be linked off another Wikipedia page (for example, if you want to delete a page, you'll find a link to the deletion policy on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion- the policy being Wikipedia:Deletion policy).
If you have any questions, defininitely feel free to ask me at anytime- I log on pretty much every day, so I'll answer pretty quickly.
Cheers, and happy editing! CattleGirl talk | e@ 06:29, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! About your question, do you mean userbox?
A good way to look for that would be to type in Template:INSERT NAME HERE into the search- for instance, Template:User My Chemical Romance brings up the My Chemical Romance userbox.
If you want a list of userboxes, have a look at the end of Wikipedia:Userboxes. On this page you can also see how to make your own userbox if you want to.

how to create a new page

[edit]

Hi there Can you help?

I'm a fan/occasional user of Wikipedia. I would like to create a new page on my area of specialty (an alternative healing technique). I found the technique mentioned in an Wikipedia index but there is no content about it yes. I'm happy to provide some.

The Wikipedia project seems quite intimidating to the new user. I don't really have the time to master it, and I'm unlikely to ever contribute anything else other than this 1 page. So I'm wondering what's the best way to go about it? Can I simply type up some content and pass it on to the editorial people to process?

cheers Simon —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Simon Magic (talkcontribs).

Hi! That's great that you want to create a page about that, alternative healing techniques are pretty interesting.
Wikipedia can be a bit intimidating, but it's pretty easy to get used to. You could type up the page and leave it on a suppage off your userpage- for instance, at User:Simon Magic/SUBPAGE NAME, and then I might be able to put it into an article if you don't want to do so yourself.
However if you do- and I encourage you to- create the page yourself, and you don't want to look through the relevant policy pages, just keep in mind to use a formal, neutral, encyclopedic tone and it should be quite good. Otherwise, you can skim through Wikipedia:Your first article.
Again, welcome to Wikipedia, and I hope I see you around! Cheers- CattleGirl talk | e@ 05:04, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, how are you?
You've already been welcomed, so a lot of what you need to know is in that message. The best way to start is to read the policies relevant to you- all the links are in the welcome message. If you want to upload images, first you should read the Copyrights and Image Use Policy. If you're just interested in editing articles, the Wikipedia Tutorial can help, and if you just want things to do, everything under the Things to Do section will help you out, and should tell you what you need to know.
If you want to get some more experience by having a mentor, the best place to start would be the Adopt-a-User program, where experienced editors mentor newer editors until that editor knows the ins and outs of Wikipedia, so it's a pretty good way to start. All the users there would be happy to help you out at any time. If you want immediate help, like it says in the welcome message, place helpme onto your talk page with the problem listed underneath it, and an editor will show up quickly.
I hope that helped you- if you have any questions or need any more help, please contact me on my talk page and I'll get back to you pretty soon. Cheers, and happy editing- CattleGirl talk | e@ | sign! 01:35, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Handling vandals

[edit]

Is there a template or shortcut when dealing with vandals or is this a copy/paste thing? The "Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. Take . . ." with the hand icon?

Thanks! D63

There's a number of templates you can use when warning vandals, all of which can be found at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. A link to this is at Wikipedia:Vandalism, and the main warnings you would use are also found there. I hope that helps you- happy editing! CattleGirl talk | sign! 02:52, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:ADOPT

[edit]

Hi there,

As a current Adopter with the Adopt-a-User program there has been some ongoing developments that we would like to bring to your attention.

A new Adopter's Area has been created where you can find useful resources and other Adopter's experiences. Please feel free to add any resources you may have found useful as an Adopter, as well as recount any experiences that you think may help others. If you know of any useful resources for new users / Adoptees then you can add them here.

Also the way the adoption process works has changed slightly. To decrease workload at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user, on offering adoption please change the Adoptme template to Adoptoffer on the user's user page, and this will add the user to Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Users that have already been offered adoption can always have a second or third offer, but by separating out those users that have not had an adoption offer yet, it is hoped that no one will go lacking.

Furthermore numerous Adopters have been adding their details to a list of users available for adopting, to offer a more personalised service and allow new users to browse through and pick their own Adopter. The quickest way to adopt though, is still to contact users at the Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

Finally - thanks for all your hard work, keep it up - and if you have any general questions or suggestions about the further development of Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User please bring them to our talk page. Cheers Lethaniol 13:48, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adopt me?

[edit]

Would you adopt me? It's kinda funny to get used to the things here. --Shaericell Talker to Triplets! |Email Me 22:54, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay! I accept. I guess I can be adopted by two people. A spare! --Shaericell Talker to Triplets! |Email Me 18:01, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's great! I'll put the adopter userbox on your userpage and keep the 'offered adoption' one there too, so Lethaniol can still adopt you. Cheers- CattleGirl talk | sign! 04:40, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WPMCR

[edit]

Good to see yet another person join WPMCR. Maybe you should create a PATD WikiProject. icelandic hurricane #12 (talk) 17:06, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, they're an amazing band (typing this as I listen!). I was thinking about creating a P!ATD WikiProject, do you think it would be successful? Thanks again- CattleGirl talk | sign! 04:24, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If it is well-organized. I'd join, as I like Patd. icelandic hurricane #12 (talk) 17:18, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've started a proposal here, so that I can be certain that regular editors will be a part of the project. If you're interested, could you please add your name? CattleGirl talk | sign! 04:39, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and welcome! Sure I'll adopt you, no problems. I noticed you haven't been given the official welcome, so I'll give it to you now, above- it's got some good links and tips in it. Most of what you need to get started is in there, and I found it helped a lot. It's probably a good idea to read what's relevant to what you'd be doing- the Getting Started section's good to look at, and there's a lot on editing in the Policies and Guidelines section that will help you. Other than that, it's best to just make your way around with Things to Do- it's the best way to gain experience.
Out of interest, what articles are you interested in?
Are there any questions you have now? If you need any help, feel free to ask me anything.
Again, welcome! CattleGirl talk | sign! 02:39, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please adopt me!!

[edit]

I'm really new on Wikipedia and I would really appreciate being adopted. First of all, what is being adopted? Hahah. Whatever it is, i could use it! By the way, I'd like to help with the Panic! At the Disco Wikiproject; they are my favorite band and I would looooove to help. Thank you!!! :) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by I Love Panic At the Disco529 (talkcontribs) 02:59, 19 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hi, and welcome! Adoption? Perhaps you should have a look at the project first, it might help you know more about it.
About the project, at the moment it's not created, so I'm letting people know that I'm planning on creating one and am trying to get a rough idea on how many people are interested. It'll be created soon, though, especially since their next album's supposed to be coming out in a few months. It's great to see people interested already, though, thanks! CattleGirl talk | sign! 03:17, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, sounds pretty good. If you don't want to take on another project (adopting me), that's okay; I might be able to figure it out myself. I'd still really appreciate it. And, by the way, I'd reeeeally appreciate it if I could be updated on the progress of the Panic! At the Disco Wikiproject, when any comes up. Thanks much! <3 --P!@tD Girly! 03:13, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fine to adopt you, I just thought that you should find out a bit more about the project. What do you think?
I'll definitely be updating you on the progress of the Wikiproject. What's important now is that more users become interested in starting the project, so if you see anyone that's interested in alternative styles of music, and seems interested in editing P!ATD articles reguarly, please refer them to the Wikiproject proposal! A lot more people should be editing the articles when the new album is going to come out, though. CattleGirl talk | sign! 03:20, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. --P!@tD Girly! 04:46, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, How are you? I am new user and want your help. Will u adopt me? How can I add link to my name? adoptme Niraj 22:43, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia- I gave you a welcome note above- it makes things a lot easier. The links in there are really helpful.
I can, and will be happy to adopt you.
I added a link to your name to make it easier to access your userpage. To add a link, you need to surround the word with square brackets like this. As 'like this' isn't a page on Wikipedia, it shows up as a red, or dead, link looking, in the end, like this.
To put a link on your username, you use tyhe square brackets, and type [[User:Niraj. You then place a line (I don't know what it's actually called, it's next to the square bracket on a QWERTY keyboard, you need to use the Shift button) and write 'Niraj'. With this 'formula', the text before the line is the page you want to go to, and the text after it is the word that you want linked- this can work on any page.
I hope that helped you a lot. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask me.
Again, welcome- CattleGirl talk | sign! 08:33, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't an experiment; it was something much, much weirder.

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and it has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you may want to do. It wasn't an experiment. It's part of a campaign to spread all over Wikipedia the theory that Catholics are not really Christians, but actually pagans who secretly worship a Babylonian goddess named Semiramis. I'm not Catholic, but I don't think this sort of addle-pated bigotry should be allowed to damage the encyclopedic quality of Wikipedia. I reverted as much of it as I could find, but I'm sure there's more to be found. And I'm sure it will keep coming.
Users involved include:
Melchizedekjesus
69.29.202.188
69.29.232.110
69.29.232.220
69.29.251.180
69.29.253.82
and probably more.

Problem...

[edit]

Adoptme

Hi CattleGirl,
I had made the mistake!!! I am user Nirajrm and I had put the request for adoption by making faulty name Niraj. My real name is Niraj and I was not knowing what that is going to make. Now I need the adoption. Will you adopt me? I am not remembering whether I had registerd by the same Niraj or not and can't remembering the password too. I am very sorry for all the mess. Here is my user page... --Nirajrm talk 15:05, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, sorry, I should have realised that from my watchlist. I'll just change the name and move the adopting userboxes, it'll be fine. I can definitely adopt you!
Do you have any questions at the moment? Please feel free to ask- CattleGirl talk | sign! 04:40, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
