Attempts to Review: Afc Draft Invisible Woman: Growing up Black in Germany

I apparently failed in my first effort to review an Afc Articles for review. Any suggestions ? I was hoping to mark in under review and then finalize the review for publication. Since it is my first time, I feel badly, but do not exactly know what I did wrong ? You mentioned "bogus review" (but I did try to review and mark it as such, and seek to mark it for administrator review & publication). I tried to read and understand the instructions for reviewing Afc submissions and was hoping to help with the backlog. This article Afc is not my submission, but someone else, and I was just interested in the topic and trying to learn how to review and get it out of the backlog.

Sincerely Publico2020 (talk) 03:08, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

@Publico2020: If you want to submit a draft for review, add {{subst:AFC submission/draft}} to the top of the draft. Press the green button when you're ready. Chris Troutman (talk) 03:51, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Publico2020 (talk) 02:46, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

@Publico2020: I'm concerned by your recent edits to the article. You are NOT a reviewer. All you need to do is improve the article, submit it for review, and wait. You need to provide multiple independent reliable sources to make a case for notability. I was also able to find this Kirkus review. By the way Ika Hügel-Marshall is nominated for deletion, too. Chris Troutman (talk) 03:01, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Mr. Troutman,

Please delete all of these submissions for the violations that you have suggested. They are not mine, I was just trying to learn how to contribute as a volunteer.

I really don't have a lot of time to volunteer my efforts. Just thought I could help review a few articles in the backlog and contribute a few things.

Please delete the Lao Veterans of America Institute as you mentioned as well as the Invisible Woman: Growing up Black in Germany regarding the Hmong-Americans and the Germany-Africans as you mentioned since you understand the Wikipedia editor requirements. Clearly these are in violation as you mentioned. Publico2020 (talk) 03:40, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

@Publico2020: Hold on! You're qualified to be an AfC reviewer. You have enough edits and your account is old enough. There are two issues in play: first, you shouldn't review drafts if they're your drafts. Secondly, it would appear you're not clear on how AfC works, which is a real problem. If you'd like to learn I'd be glad to show you. Chris Troutman (talk) 03:50, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you. I am a novice user. As time permits, I will try and take you up on your kind offer. I am still trying to learn how things work and see what I can do as volunteer. Publico2020 (talk) 04:00, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Request on 15:26:10, 7 January 2015 for assistance on AfC submission by LittleGold

Hello I would be grateful if you could give me further information regarding which sources are not reliable. I have cited 22 external pages for reference and not sure which ones you deem to not be verifiable. Many thanks.

LittleGold (talk) 15:26, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

@LittleGold: I left a comment on the draft, but I'll reiterate. You need to use more independent sources. The articles he himself wrote or articles published by companies he owns don't help notability. In addition to the Newsweek article there are others you could add. I'm pretty sure Zahoor is notable you just need to clean that draft up. Chris Troutman (talk) 16:03, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Hey Chris - I'm a Twinkle user and recent changes patroller, and am interested in joining the CVUA. We are in different time zones (I'm in AEST) but that should be fine. Thanks! --The one that forgot (talk) 03:01, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

@Cadillac000: Ok. Let me state up front that I am one of the tougher instructors in the Academy. Throughout the course I want exactly what I ask for. If you plan to be gone from Wikipedia for more than a week I expect to be promptly informed. I prefer to have you focus on this course continuously. This is your CVUA page where all instruction will happen. I've already assigned your first section and will assign more as you progress.
I see you've started using Twinkle. I love Twinkle and use it a lot. However, we are starting manually. NO TWINKLE or any other tool until I introduce it. We proceed through this course dependent on your ability to follow instructions. If you have any questions, ask. Otherwise, get started. Chris Troutman (talk) 03:16, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Afc Resubmission for Draft: Lao Veterans of America Institute

I was able to add additional references/citations regarding the national and international noteability of the subject organization, including references from the Hmong Times, McClatchy News Organization (which owns the Fresno and Sacramento Bee newspapers and many others), the US Congressional Record, Los Angeles Times, etc.

I do not have access to JSTOR but their are other references in the Los Angeles Times as well as Agence France Press (AFP) to the Lao Veterans of America Institute and its President Colonel Wangyee Vang of Fresno, California. So the organization is most noteable with significant U.S. and international news media attention.

I will try to continue to add more additional references from other newspapers and news media sources regarding the Lao Veterans of America Institute.

Hope that it can be re-reviewed.

Also interested in learning how to review articles for submission as you suggested (and in the mean time, trying to read (and re-read) further the information on the wikipedia section regarding this.

Thank you.

Publico2020 (talk) 20:39, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Also: National Public Radio (NPR) journalist wrote an article and did an multi-media news article about the organization and its President. Indicated in the References/Citations section. Publico2020 (talk) 20:42, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

@Publico2020: The sources you added to Draft: Lao Veterans of America Institute made enough of a case for it to be accepted. It still needs to be cleaned up. You included sources like businesswire that are problematic. Press releases aren't sources.
The reviewing instructions are relatively clear. The overall criteria for acceptance is that the article stands better than 50% chance of surviving a deletion discussion. If the consensus of other editors would conclude the subject isn't notable or the subject shouldn't be discussed in a standalone article then you shouldn't approve it. Take a look at some of these AfD discussions. Get a feel for what editors are evaluating.
To test your ability for AfC, find an un-reviewed draft. Let me know here which one, if you would accept or decline it, and why. We can discuss it and see if you understand what we're looking for. Remember, the subject has to be notable, the important details have to be verifiable, and it can't have a fatal flaw like being a copyright violation or not being neutral. Chris Troutman (talk) 01:03, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Chris Troutman,

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain this and educate me about this. I will try it out and let you know, as you mentioned, as time allowed.

Keep up the good work

02:07:29, 11 January 2015 review of submission by Slainson

I took your suggestions and took out all of the quotes. I also took out all of the descriptions of the albums and just left the titles and the dates. I also added more citations in case that would be useful to document the article. The article is very slimmed down now, but full of references. Hope that is what you'd like to see. Slainson (talk) 02:07, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

@Slainson: Good job. I have some suggestions for further cleanup. First, don't over-do it with citations, especially for non-controversial things like Wendy Woo is a singer in Colorado. We don't need a dozen sources for that. I piled several into one reference citation so it's less obvious. We only see long list of citations on contentious stuff like Israel/Palestine of Creationism/Evolution stuff. It looks suspect to Wikipedians since it's a red flag you're trying too hard to prove something. Also, I have to believe you can find better tidbits out of those sources than just one sentence. Second, add URLs where you can in the citation templates, and wikify the publishers of sources (newspapers, magazines, websites, etc.) as it helps editors quickly check up on the citations. Third, if you can develop the personal life stuff and add an image. This is often the hardest info to find. Images have to be free of copyright. Finally, you make no mention of her band and no critical reception of her albums. I hope you're able to improve this and move on to other articles. Chris Troutman (talk) 02:41, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Hey Chris, please tell me why he got denied, he has plenty of links on their that are to credible sources. From FuseTV, to Underground Music Awards, to various notable Hip-Hop sites, plus a feature he did made it to the top of the Amazon charts in 4 categories, and in the Top 50 on iTunes. I'm not well versed in how to cite and reference, I'm doing the best I can.

Please help me fix this.

@Mgmtsoundbyte: I left comments on the help desk and the draft itself, so you should read those. By the way, sign-in when you're editing with Wikipedia! It's easier for us to interact with a registered user than an IP and if you're not signed-in the edits you make aren't attributed to your account.
Biographical articles about musicians typically fail because the subject hasn't "made it" yet. That's the case here. D.Chamberz isn't on the charts, hasn't sold a gold record, and doesn't have a Grammy. These are the sorts of things our notability criteria for musicians requires. iTunes and Amazon don't count. YouTube doesn't count. I'm not sure about the Fuse TV thing because reality shows don't always connote notability. The "underground music awards", whatever that is, isn't notable so it doesn't confer any notability on "awardees." If you're talking about general notability you have to pile on good, independent reliable sources. You have two good sources. You might try adding this from XXL even though it's an interview, not an article. I'd say you need to be patient and keep this in sandbox until Chamberz makes it big. 05:12:56, 16 January 2015 review of submission by Graceking123

I read over the requirements for submission of a music artist and I feel I followed all the requirements. I submitted a newspaper article, submitted famous Christian historical writers/bloggers, and proved popular notable websites from secondary and third handed sources. It is very discouraging for a future writer to get rejected after abiding by the requirements to getting an article published. I've discuss my article on the Teahouse/Questions for New Writer, and user:Jakec agreed that I had enough reliable sources for him to accept my article. Please reconsider my draft I worked hard on it and if you look at my research closer you will see I have notable sources. If it would be helpful for me if you would guide me in the right direction on my Hostyle Gospel article and help me achieve success on my next article.

Graceking123 (talk) 05:12, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

@Graceking123: I've reviewed perhaps three hundred drafts so I feel I have a fair amount of experience doing this. And yet, after I declined your draft you simply ask me to reconsider because you think your draft is ok. Typically editors will approach me after they've made some improvements but you've not even done that. If Jakec thinks your draft is acceptable (which I find hard to believe) then by all means have them move it into the main namespace. Telling me to "look at my research closer" is insulting.
You provided only one news source and it was a local paper, at that. The rest of your sources are blogs and church websites. That doesn't pass the general notability criteria. Also don't attempt to gain sympathy from me. I have nine sandboxes representing dozens of hours of work and none of those will be getting into the mainspace any time soon. I would love to have those articles finished but the subjects simply aren't notable beyond a reasonable doubt. I'm hoping someday I can find more sources so they pass. Patience is required sometimes.
My suggestion is the same for you: patience. Because Wikipedia is a tertiary source, we need to wait until there are secondary sources to rely on. With luck Hostyle will break out and you'll have all the newspaper and magazine articles you need. Remember that Wikipedia lags behind the curve of notability; this isn't a website to make people famous. If you want to be successful at writing articles I'd suggest picking notable subjects. It's far easier to find a bunch of source material (books, etc.) and then decide who to write about than it is to decide who to write about then search for sources. Writing new articles isn't that important, either. There are many Wikipedia articles in dire need of expansion, better sourcing, and general rewriting. You could do a lot to improve the existing coverage on Christian hip hop. Chris Troutman (talk) 05:54, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

how about another TIP, you dont a know a nottin on a da Sourcing.....Arrest on corruption charges, you must mean

Extended content

Hi. I notice you added multiple sources to a paragraph in Sheldon Silver that was already sourced without adding any other content. Please stop doing this. Many news outlets will report the same sparse facts. Adding a dozen sources makes it look like you're trying too hard to verify something which you probably believe others may doubt. We only require a couple solid sources for something as non-controversial as Silver's arrest. No one doubts the arrest happened. Chris Troutman (talk) 04:17, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

what a you mean, just look at the references!

Arrest on corruption charges, you must mean

On January 22, 2015, Silver was arrested on federal corruption charges. The federal inquiry that led to his arrest focused on payments that Silver received for years from a small law firm that specializes in seeking reductions of New York City real estate taxes. Investigators said Silver failed to properly disclose the payments from the firm, Goldberg & Iryami, on his annual financial disclosure filings with the state. Similar charges involved asbestos-related referral fees that he received from the law firm Weitz & Luxenberg. Silver faced immediate pressure to resign.[1][2] One of his longtime associates, Brian Meara, provided key information to investigators in exchange for a non-prosecution agreement.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

09:50:24, 30 January 2015 review of submission by Reethulingam

Reethulingam (talk) 09:50, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Chris,

As per your review I have made changes in citation part and provided an alternative link for financial express. Next, Kindly explain me in detail in considering the article as business index. I have come across many company (profitable) profile stating about the work and people associated. Guide me in improving this article. The reason behind asking for suggestion/re-review is that this company is involved in addressing retirement industry challenges and provides technology solutions to their legacy systems.

Reethulingam (talk) 09:50, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

@Reethulingam: Please read our guidelines, especially WP:RS and WP:NCORP. All you did was switch out your one good source for another questionable source. Don't look at other Wikipedia articles as a guide unless they're rated as a good article or better. Nobody cares about this company and their "retirement industy." Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not advertising space. Chris Troutman (talk) 04:15, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

ScienceDirect

Hi Chris

I was granted access to Elsevier's ScienceDirect. However, the registration didn't work and the contact at them didn't reply when I wrote to them. I hope you can help. YohanN7 (talk) 15:10, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

@YohanN7: I have contacted Elsevier on your behalf; you should be hearing from them soon. I am not currently supporting The Wikipedia Library so I'd ask Sadads about any other problems you encounter. Chris Troutman (talk) 02:04, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. Actually, I have received help already, and things seem to work

Draft:Eric 'E.T.' Thorngren

--User:Woodchucksh3166 I think I addressed your concerns on this one.

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Eric_%E2%80%98E.T.%E2%80%99_Thorngren&oldid=644511838

@Woodchucksh3166: Nope, you didn't. It doesn't appear you even bothered reading my comment. This time I left a long comment on the draft. Read that and make improvements. You're welcome.
Also, don't incompetently include coding in your signature, as it's causing problems. Just sign with four tildes. Chris Troutman (talk) 20:03, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
@Chris Troutman: Chris. I'm confused by your response. I did read and attempt to incorporate your feedback. In response to your initial feedback, I changed a number of the cites to AllMusic. In response to your comment re: lack of notoriety and name dropping, I included several additional musical artists that ET Thorngren worked with (and included appropriate cites.) Mr Thorngren was the lead sound engineer for 50+ bands over the past 30 years He's worked with Talking Heads, Bob Marley, Sugar Hill (white lines) Squeeze, etc. He's referenced 49 times on Wikipedia already [1]
I included most of the major acts he's worked with - should I list all of them? I can do that, although that doesn't seem in line with other pages I've looked at and might even violate the rules against writing in a way that is too promotional. Thanks for your help. Woodchucksh3166 (talk) 21:19, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
@Woodchucksh3166: I'm confused by your response, too. I'm trying to help you which is why I handed you a dozen other sources to use. My comment about name-dropping was meant to for you to not list acts he's worked with as a means of establishing notability. If you use sources like Rolling Stone to verify Thorngren worked with some band, the notability doesn't come from mentioning he worked with said band; the notability comes from the magazine mentioning him. But rather than say Thorngren was mentioned in a magazine you use the citation to verify a fact about him and we'll see how that's been verified.
Look at what I wrote for James Brown (Elvis impersonator) and Gail Boggs. I mention plenty of other names in those articles but each of those claims is sourced reliably. I make general notability in each of those cases by piling on those sources while not adding information that's not sourced.
Take for instance Thorngren's work as stated in Legend (Bob Marley & The Wailers album)#Track listings. The paragraph in that article is unsourced and probably ought to be removed if sources aren't added. If you have sources like newspaper articles that verify that info then it's good to use. The mentions in Don't Explain (Robert Palmer album) and A Night to Remember (Cyndi Lauper album) are unreferenced, too. I think those assertions are true but without sources we don't know. High Times (one of the sources I put in my draft comment) makes a claim about Thorngren winning a Grammy. That would go far to establishing notability per WP:MUSICBIO. The Grammy website doesn't bear that assertion out but I'd be curious to know what album he worked on that got the Grammy. If you can source that assertion then it would help you a lot. I really encourage you to read the guidelines (MUSICBIO and RS) that I've been repeatedly mentioning. Chris Troutman (talk) 21:54, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
@Chris Troutman: Chris. Thanks for your help. I'm hopeful that the recent rev will fit the guidelines. Btw, Thorngren was reportedly nominate for a Grammy for his work on Robert Palmer's Riptide, but I haven't been able to independently verify such.Woodchucksh3166 (talk) 21:15, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Request on 10:18:26, 20 February 2015 for assistance on AfC submission by Reethulingam

Hello Chris, Let us be honest. In Wikipedia, i find articles on many profitable companies and their products. I don't intend to use Wikipedia as a space to market/promotes the company [Congruent Solutions Inc.]. But to add credibility and a trustworthy note to the company and their service by publishing in this esteemed platform. Well, I want to know whether businessline is a questionable source, that provides reports and analysis on the economy of the country. Also, I AM interested in knowing about a retirement industry and its compliance's dealing with citizens pension planning, investments and financial security after retirement. With 11 years of experience in serving the retirement industry, this company understands the nuances and issues in the defined contribution compliance and technological advancement replacing legacy system, that is quite interesting. I took this initiative of sharing my interest in the retirement industry and contribute to Wikipedia in this domain. Thank you Reethu.R Reethulingam (talk) 10:18, 20 February 2015 (UTC) Reethulingam (talk) 10:18, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Request of Monitor Orpha Klinker

Hey Chris! How are you faring in your new location? I finally published Orpha Klinker. Can you flag it for that "hit list" you told me about? You are missed here in Los Angeles. (Ramblingriver (talk) 23:51, 21 February 2015 (UTC))

@Ramblingriver: I've done a little cleanup on the article and added it t my watchlist. If you'd like to nominate the article for the Did You Know? WikiProject, you have seven days from the day you created it to make a nomination.
I'm very glad to see you've finally published it. I know this has been a work in progress for a long time. I notice, though, that you made a copy-and-past move rather than move the entry from your sandbox. Ask Jen the next time you see her about a history merge. 16:27, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
