The IP address from school is 168.221.143.68. The message form school said that the IP address is blocked and it does not allow editing from that IP address. I can only message you from home. Survival of the Shawangunks

I just created this uniquely Hudson Valley article today and was wondering if you'd be willing to assess it. I also nominated it for DYK. To disclose fully, after I started it I discovered the less-well-named and less-informative SOS triathlon article. However I thought about it and decided that if I couldn't find it by searching the first time, neither could anybody else, so I redirected it to the new page in a bold fashion. Say, that's pretty interesting; I didn't realize Blade Runner was so often used for such comparisons. The moment the block expired, 71.243.223.66 (talk/contribs/block log) came back and is doing the exact same things to Talk:Kodocha and Kodocha - deleting talk page documentation and rebuttal of his behavior, deleting or discombobulating anything in mainspace he perceives as negative, and adding personal-blog-style commentary such as "At Last Sana and Akito are Together again How Long They Stay Together Is Not Told But We Can All imagine What Happens Will Be Handled By Both of Them......Together..."
It's possible that some of his edits could be perceived as being within AGF, albeit with an extremely poor command of adult English. But they're almost all detrimental, and I'm not keen on trying to sort through them while he's actively engaged in vandalising the pages. arimareiji (talk) 05:17, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

I realize that the user in question already has a block review template on their page, I would just like you to review your own block for a moment, considering things. Your template says that the user is a sockpuppet account of a previously blocked user. As to my understanding, sockpuppeting is only not allowed if it is used to disrupt, and as far as I can see, this second account was not used to disrupt, and was only created because the user had forgotten his or her password. Bridges and River County Cats

Recently I have seen some editors adding Category:Bridges in New York and Category:Bridges in Ulster County, New York to the same article, same thing with Category:Rivers of New York and Category:Rivers of Ulster County, New York. I have raised questions at WT:WikiProject_Rivers#Category:Rivers_of_Ulster_County.2C_New_York and WT:WikiProject_Bridges#Bridges_in_X_County about the desirability of the child/parent combo in these cases, since, if extended to all counties in the state, the child cats would exhaust the parent cat. I belatedly figured out that the county cats in question were created by you, so I thought I should let you know.

Actually, in the case of rivers, I think the county cats are probably a bad idea per se, which would make the parent/child issue moot in that case. The bridge county cats seem fine as cats-- I'm just not sure we should duplicate. Anyway, I will look forward to your views.

With bridges, the thing is that wp:Categorization_and_subcategories suggests that duplication is usually to be used "when the subcategory is not part of a complete categorization scheme for members of the parent category. For example, actor Marlon Brando is in both Category:Best Actor Academy Award winners and its parent Category:Film actors." But if we create a complete set of Bridges in X county cats, then the county cat assignment will be exhaustive, suggesting that duplicate cats should not be assigned.

The note in WP:BRIDGES#Categorization about duplicate cats is, I think, talking about nonexhaustive cats, similar to the Actors/Academy-Award-Actors situation, like Toll Bridges, and Suspension Bridges.

Since we presently have only two Bridges in X county cats (Ulster and Orange), and one Rivers of X county cat (Ulster), now would be a real good time to settle both issues. -- Mwanner | Talk 17:53, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Uncivil Edit Summary

I think this Edit Summary, in which User:RetroS1mone said to me, "what part of do not modify don't you understand" and accused me of "promoting blp violations" (even though the note I placed was done on the instructions of Jimbo Wales and MastCell), was clearly uncivil, and could've been worded more politely. If it Jimbo indicates to me that links to the removed versions were not wanted, then that's fine. My issue is with the manner in which Simone disregards the Civility policy. Daniel thank you for trying on clarifying this problem. Nightscream refuses to talk to me, that is not how we work together at Wikipedia. I am sorry when you think my edit summary was abusive, it was just, I am very exasparated Nightscream keeps intervening in a very very simple matter, very very easy to interpret policy, again and again. It was not a mistake Nightscream linked to the blp violation, it is Nightscream's on-going disagreeing on blp policy.

There is a fringe group called AIDS denialism, mostly like thirty or forty people who are full time activisits in it in the world, they say HIV and AIDS are not real. They have a message board on MSN and I watch it and some from my friends watch it bc now or then they have a campaign to sabotage WP. They did it in this spring, that is when I first became editor, they did it again in last weeks. They try putting on false claims about HIV and AIDS and on smearing good scientists like Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier. They do not use sources, when they do it is stuff they publish themselves.

November 4, one of them goes to Robert Gallo, AIDS denialism, adds this stuff, it is what Jimbo is talking about when he says "RetroS1mone did the right thing, clearly. Wikipedia is not a place for people with ranting agendas to come and smear people they don't like." and also "Treating angry lunatics as if they are worthy discussants devalues people who really are worthy. Allowing vicious insults and/or rants from lunatics to stand, as if they need to be responded to on an equal footing with thoughtful objections, makes Wikipedia a less noble place"

So I see this stuff, for me it is not worth any thing bc of, WP:SPS, WP:SOAPBOX, WP:BLP, WP:TALK all kinds. I know what the source is, it is from a full time AIDS denialist that publishes her own stuff on the internet and made a "publishing company" to publish her one book. Total Talk page violations, it should just get deleted, this is a mean angry person trying to disrupt Wikipedia. So I remove it just like WP:BLP and WP:TALk says, I inform every body like User Verbal and Someguy1221 about why, I even said to the IP editor why it was.

Then Nightscream restores the whole thing w/o an edit summary. WP:BLP is very very clear, burden of proof for sources is on people that add or restore blp stuff. So what Nightscream does was a blp problem, Nightscream did not look up the sources, did not look at the false smears, just restored it. BC Nightscream thought BLP does not apply on talk pages, Nightscream said that later. I showed Nightscream they were wrong quoting the BLP policy, they were rude and dismissive of me and said, well do you know all the policies by heart? Well no i don't, but I also don't make big edits when I am not sure about a basic policy. That is what Nightscream did. Nightscream still did not understand the BLP policy bc they put examples in a long comment at Jimbo's talk page, where they say potential blp violations should get discussed even when there is not a source before you do anything with it. That is just wrong there is nothing in BLP about doing that.

I apologized very much when Nightscream said I was incivil, Nightscream never accepted my apologies. Nightscream said they wouldn't talk to me again. Nightscream went to Jimbo Wales. Jimbo said I was right. Jimbo said Nightscreams interpertation of censorship was "odd." Jimbo also said a way to handle stuff like this in the future would be deleting the stuff and leaving a note. Jimbo did not say, "hey nightscream pls leave a note there." But Jimbo also said I did the right thing and SheffieldSteel did the right thing deleting or refactoring. Well I had all ready left a note saying blp violations were deleted, SheffieldSteel left a note like that, and MastCell closed the discussion. So a week later Nightscream goes to MastCell talk page and says they want to leave a note, MastCell I do not know if they knew my note and Sheffields were there, is like, ok, whatev, but keep it short. Nightscream puts a paragraph in the discussion that says do not modify and they link to original blp violations. Well in mean-time, the IP editor was banned. They made an account call Whereistheproof and put the password on their AIDS denialism MSN group and made socks. The IP was a proxy server they were all using to get around recognition, put rants on WP, stack AFD voting. They kept trying on adding this same blp stuff at Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier and AIDS deniallism.

So what I will do in the future is this, I will try be more polite, but I think linking a blp violation is promoting it, want to or not, delibarate or not. I also want Nightscream to understand BLP better, that is a main policy here, it is bad when administrators do not know it and restore and then link to violations. I am happy talking to Nightscream even tho Nightscream keeps calling me "obnoxious" and things, I think we need to talk and work together on WP, and I am not having a personal problem, I just want policy to get understood and followed. I left a message at Template talk:DYKproblem regarding the problem with the signature in it (and then after I left it I realized there's probably nobody other than me watching that page, so I doubt I'll get any answers). Anyway, if you're good with template syntax maybe you could take a look. ban discussion

I saw your ban proposal on ANI.

I have some interest in the ban topic because more than a year ago, I was banned (blocked as a sock of a banned user). Both the administrator calling for the ban and another administrator have told me that they don't believe that I am a sock. I was called a sock simply because someone thought that I was opposed to the proposed ban. I was not opposed to it but simply thought that the offense should be cleared spelled out and not just a "I don't like you ban". It took months to get unblocked. The wisdom of unblock has been proven by over a year's worth of good editing.

I haven't looked at the ban proposal much but I've started to think if the current definition of bans are overly harsh. People, especially teens and young adults grow and mature. Wikipedia will likely be around for many years. Should a ban be limited to 1 year (a common maximum by ArbCom), 3 years, another term? What do you think?Chergles (talk) 16:14, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Sure, but a) IME a flash outdoors at night with a digital camera will give you an almost totally black image anyway and b) most news agencies would clean it up a little before putting it out. I know you did it in good faith. Flickr feeds tend to become lousy with copyvios after this kind of event so the issue comes up a lot. Modern digital cameras will let you take pics in the dark (mine goes up to 3200 iso) but they will be very noisy (so the ability is mostly useless). DrKiernan downgraded 1400-1500 in fashion from A-class to B-class with these comments: "parts of this are unsourced: e.g. blonde hair was desirable; layout needs sorting out (large white space on my screen; image showing straight-cut neckline next to text about V-cut necklines)". I removed the white space (caused by a recently added image). You originally did the A-assessment; can you take a look and see if this downgrade seems reasonable? (I admit it, I want my A back.) Kamilo beach

Kamilo Beach has been described as "Hawaii's dirtiest"

Good work, but we should probably remove that as well due to the problems with the term "dirty". Hawaii's dirtiest beaches are listed by the NRDC (see for example [1]) and the way "dirty" is defined in this context, applies to beaches exceeding the limit for bacteria content. The list already shows two entries for Hawaii, and Kamilo isn't on it. So, I think we should avoid repeating these claims made by popular sources (I didn't add them to the article) and focus on using more accurate terms, such as "plastic pollution", etc. Viriditas (talk) 10:38, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

The edit you referred is to of someone I know nothing of, but might I add that the IP I am using is that is given by my ISP, something like the one they have in Dubai. Anyone who uses the same network that gave me this IP can access it, As for PAs, well I was being friendly I merely added a hello as in the case of [[2]] but was said by another user to be commiting a vandalism. I'm not trying to say that he's a bad person or anything but I just think that perhaps he should cut the newbies a little more slack.

As to the personal attacks, I am a little confused as to what that might mean, what I wrote on Kira's userpage was merely [[3]] . I can't see how this might be an attack of any sort.

I would like to disagree on the part of assuming good faith. I think I did. It's just that they didn't seem to have the same on me. I think one of them secretly reported me. But now it doesn't really matter, then I think, I got somewhat upset from it, and tried unblocking myself. Which I think led to the multiple requests. But if you were to look back at my first request you will find that I only did one. But as I took my time waiting, i think impatience got the better of me, but I still don't think it's much of a disruption. One or three... the net result and workload is still roughly the same. Anyways I apologize for that, and any of all what I have done.

Image sizes

I can agree with you that 200px is a doable size. I didn't realize the default was 180; apparently in the past I changed mine to 120 and it's been that ever since, so my intentions were a bit skewed. I still think 300px is just way too big though - takes up too much of my screen (even when I hook my laptop up to a 19″ monitor).

WRT the article, I rearranged many of the images, after your refresher on MOS:IMAGES. Almost all image placements violated MOS:IMAGES: many were placed just before the section they were intended for; many were placed on the left just under section headings; and at least a couple were placed in the wrong spot (above or below by a paragraph or two). Once I rearranged the violations, I staggered the left over images to avoid stacking (as best as possible).

I'm kind of surprised you undid my change rather than just changing them (which you did in your next edit anyway); otherwise you wouldn't have lost my removal of "small" describing roundabouts. It did occur and can be found below line 77 in the edit summary.

I also cropped the end sign because of all the dead space, then I shrunk the image in the artcle to default. The sign is larger as default in the crop than it was in at 300px with the dead space.

I would propose that the image of the Dunn Memorial Bridge be shrunk due to forced image stacking and the small section it resides in. Even at 150px, it is still identifiable, and it's kind of a minimal addition to begin with. But I will allow you to make that decision. I do appreciate keeping all images the same size throughout.

Between feeding the DYK admin bot beast and striving to make it onto or improve our standing in the many DYK lists and records, we set up a very drawing WikiProject. I'm close to making it onto DYK Creations/expansions list (DYK article creation), and want to do it before the end of the year (the next eight days). I'm looking at this and I figure it's more likely the better tag is {{PD-art-70-3d}} (Though I don't remember if that is sufficient for US PD; I haven't rechecked the Mickey Mouse Protection Act recently article.). Far as I can tell, the monument (according to the article) was unveiled 1930, and French died in 1931, so it's PD in quite a few jurisdictions. Circeus (talk) 20:23, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

IIRC, it's very often a certain period after publication (don't remember the length) OR 70y after death, whichever is longer/shorter. The lengths usually vary if it's anonymous publication (goes from 50 to 100 years in Canada IIRC), but merely posthumous publication changes nothing. For a bit I suspected it might have been a work for hire, but it does not fall into the category. Copyright renewal is irrelevant to the issue anyway, as renewal prevents the work from becoming PD before the statutory limit, but certainly cannot extend it beyond that limit. I noticed that you recently blocked Trollmann (talk · contribs) for a username violation. The word "trollmann" is a Norwegian word that translates as "wizard". Therefore, I think that this user probably is Norwegian and chose this name without intending any reference to Internet trolling -- at least, we should assume good faith until evidence shows something else. Thanks for your reply. I understand it so that you consider the username to be promotional because it contains the string "troll" which is also contained in the name Digitroll. However, since the username is a legitimate word, I don't agree that the username itself is in any way promoting the company. IMHO, this user may have created the Digitroll article in good faith, and should be notified about why that article is not appropriate - but not blocked. It may be that he just doesn't know the notability policy, and judging by the deletion log he only created the article once - he has not been repeatedly spamming. If you still think he should be indefblocked for creating this article, I kindly request that you replace the block message with one indicating that he was blocked for creating a promotional article. Regarding your lack of foresight in banning ShabuShabu

Arbiteroftruth repeated removed information from The Little Nyonya and you did not block him. The actress in the show was criticised as quoted from the reference given. He changed the word to "praised" instead. You mean he is allowed to do such things instead?

It appears to me that the article says the Kate Winslet won a golden globe for the movie-at the top it says it is a golden glober winner (and it is not), and at the bottom under awards it says that Kate won for it. She won for her role in "Revolutionary Road". I don't know how to correct the article, and under "discussion" it said you might be able to help. Quick DYK question

Hello. I've been working on the Icos article for a few days now and today I glanced over the DYK rules. I thought that there wasn't a time limit on expansions for articles being nominated to DYK. But now I noticed in the DYK rules it says that expansions should be completed within 5 days. How strict is this? Is it exactly 120 hours, or is it more flexible? I can get Icos to 4x within an hour or two, but 5x will take at least another day. Is this enough? Thanks! Clarification

Hi, I've noticed at least one user who only seems concerned with going to pages and changing the term "passed away" to "died" with the justification that "everyone dies sometime." Is this a policy of Wikipedia or this just person who basically has nothing better to do but change terms because he doesn't like "passed away" for whatever reason? NY Route 32 importance ranking for CD

I have gone ahead and assigned an importance ranking for NY Route 32 under the Capital District wikiproject banner. The assignment put is High importance as it goes through Albany, Watervliet, Cohoes, and Waterford; important areas and those sections of 32 are important for the regions history, plus it goes through other areas of the region, and it's well known to most CD residents. I hope you agree with the importance assessment, if not feel free to change it. I did, however, find what I believe is a minor mistake or oversight in the route description, possibly simply made by someone not all that familar with differences of town/ hamlet/ village boundaries in the CD,- 32 doesnt go through Green Island but the article says it goes from Albany to Menands, to Watervliet to Green Island and into Cohoes, in reality it goes through Maplewood right after Watervliet, Maplewood is a hamlet of the town of Colonie; it actually goes through the town twice, once leaving Albany, because Menands is village WITHIN the town of Colonie and then leaving Menands it goes through Schuyler Heights another hamlet of the town, THEN the city of Wateverliet, then the town of Colonie again this time in the hamlet of Maplewood, then it enters Cohoes. Green Island is on the other side of I-787 from Maplewood/Colonie. 32 has had many route changes, I'll have to look at an old map I have from prior to I-787 construction, it is possible 32 did go through Green Island and up Dyke Ave into Cohoes at one point, but we are talking about 30+ years ago at least. If you can get a hold of a Jimapco map those are pretty accurate on city/village/town boundaries and shows the names of hamlets more than most map companies do. I would do the edit myself but dont want to step on any toes as this is a FA article and I dont have any verifiable sources (other than my own substantial geographical knowledge, I tend to work on CD articles about the various hamlets, villages, towns, cities, counties, etc). I understand that there will be gaps (though I must ask, and hopefully you know the answer- How does an article get to FA status when one of the criteria is no obvious or essential gaps? I may be biased since I am from the Capital District, but wouldnt the fact that much smaller downstate stretches get more information than the much larger Albany-to-northern terminus stretch mean that the article lacks just a little from being a FA article?) I hope its ok that I go ahead and add to this missing stretch and put in more information? I dont want to upset or step on anybody's toes. I know sometimes articles become very important to the people who work on them. I am much better at researching and finding hard to find sources for obscure history facts for articles than I am at putting facts together into a coherent flowing article. I hope that if you have some time you can take a look at History of Albany, New York and see if you have any suggestions or editing you can do to make it flow better. Blocking policy

Hi Daniel

I am not a particular fan of Sweet Autumn Misery's editorial contributions as I think they are on barely or not notable topics. However, my read (which may be incomplete due to either (a) nonpublic information or (b) my inability to find the relevant data) is that you blocked the user based on the "say-so" of one editor, backed by incredibly limited information and a wild inference, no discussion, no checkuser, and no debate. Further, it appears that you are waiting for that editor to be satisfied that the charge is baseless, rather than trying to find a consensus or making your own determination.

Hence, two questions:

1. Is that a correct summary of the events that have occurred? and

2. Is that the normal way blocking is done / undone?

New DYK template for nominations

Hi,

I've been working, somewhat at Gatoclass's behest, to develop a new version of {{DYKsug}} that doesn't leave so much junk on the nominations page (partly just to be tidier, partly to reduce the page's byte count and, hopefully, its load time). The new template is complete and located at {{NewDYKnomination}} ({{NewDYKnom}} also works). It is used in almost the exact same way as the current template (the only difference being that |creator= and |expander= have been merged into a single |writer= parameter, since there seems to have been confusion in the past about the difference between these two); there is more discussion of the new template at Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Archive 39#New template for nominations--please provide feedback if you have a moment and Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Archive 39#Working on a better nomination template.

Since you do a lot of work vetting nominations, you are one of the people who will be most affected by the template change (although the effect shouldn't be very big...the main difference is just that this template is less complicated and the format will look a bit different), so I am hoping to hear your thoughts before I go ahead with making the switch from the current system to this one. The links I provided above have permalinks to examples of what the template will look like when used; you are also free to experiment with it in a sandbox.

Deskie Deletion

Mr Case, I am writing to request that you might consider undeleting the 'Deskie' article, considering that while the page itself appears as blatent advertising, it was created in response to a request that all webtops in the comparison table of the Web Desktop article have an article to which they link. NY in front

I was comparing the look of NY 52 and NY 55 to a featured article like NY 32 or NY 22. They use the "NY" pretty much throughout. My "lazy" comment wasn't a slap on anyone. I had an english teacher who called stuff like that lazy writing. Just a term I use. Sorry if it offended you. I guess I could start a discussion about it. I see your point with making it more readable for non-roadgeek people, but I also think, like when writing papers for school or something, that they should stick to a formal way of writing. What is the Wiki policy for contractions? I would find that to be similar to the issue here. People use contractions in their writing to make it more readable, but it isn't a formal way of writing. My comparison was based on that contractions help readability, so I thought it was a good one =). But I see your point, so again, sorry for stepping on your toes there. Guess its unavoidable sometimes when this is such a group effort. I remember the whole shields thing too. Pretty crazy.

By the way, where in upstate NY do you live? I live in Rockland County. I went to Albany for a Super Bowl party, but to show you how much of a geek I am, I left at 7am, so I could drive up Route 9 and take some pictures along the way. I ended up collecting over 200 or so from 9 and corresponding routes along the way. I really like the US 9 page you put together. The first thing I thought about was in Tarrytown where all those 9 shields exist at one place then I saw you had a pic of it already. That was pretty funny. I totally agree with you about shooting through the windshield when there's an opportunity to get out of the car. Some places you can't obviously, so thank god for a 4GB memory card so you can just snap away! You should have seen me going over the Dunn Memorial Bridge, haha. Some shots you get lucky and don't show the windshield blotches, but there were a lot I had to delete too. I'd just be embarrassed to post them. I think state-ends is a cool site, but a good number of their images are terrible. So if you can pull over and take a few shots, that's how they should be done.

I see what you're saying with shots of the route shields being redundant. I'm not a fan of extreme closeups of shields or when they are centered in the shot unless its unique (like a multiple junction, the Tarrytown 9 cluster, etc..), but I do like getting the shield in the shot somehow though. File:US6US202BearMountainBridge.jpg, File:NY301WesternTerminus.jpg are examples of what I like. I rather have the shield blend in with the shot than be the focal point. The scenic shots are cool too. Hope you get to make that North Country trip. It's funny because I used to travel to Plattsburgh all the time when my ex-girlfriend went to school there. Final resolution for the Mousesports page

Hello. I've been representing the esports industry on Wikipedia for quite some time now. I was a member of Nihilum and Mousesports for quite some time before I switched over and joined SK Gaming earlier this year. Part of representing the esports community involved defending the mouz page from deletion. I was over-aggressive but still had the deletion call nullified. However, the user that opposed me (The Red Pen of Doom) still had the page requested for merging. This has been done previously for other esports-related pages that were requested to be merged with other esports pages but have all been previously denied.

I know that my expired affiliation with Mousesports is obvious, but I would still appreciate to see the page without the threat of merge at the top, simply because I did the majority of the work on the page. My request to you as an accomplished administrator is for the page to be denied merging, (even after months of no progress), and for additional support in promoting the development of the mouz page. I added everything I could, but most of the news developed surrounding mouz is in german. Bahinabai is a Varkari saint, Varkari faith has it's influence only on Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, to some extent. Her influence limited to these regions. Her philosophy is her legacy. Any way, why would someone who regretted her female birth, be a role model for feminists. I am going to WP:GAR. His unblock justification appears valid in that Manganese would have shown an image of the pop musician Coolio due to vandalism of Template:Infobox manganese. Oversight's effectiveness

Isn't it reasonable to say that if something has been up on Wikipedia for a while then oversighted later then it will be still up on Wikipedia mirror sites? On a tangential note- why do people have those "this page has been vandalised" userboxes on their user pages? Don't you find it just encourages the vandals more? advice?

hi; i could use a little quite advice here.

i seem to have gotten into 2 different edit wars at the same time, neither one intentionally, & both rather stupid.

i'm having a fight with one user over the dab hatnotes on China & the History of China, both of which were overlong, clumsy, contained multiple extraneous links, & were using a template that disnt really fit all that well. have offered to discuss compromise wording, recieved a response on one of the talk pages, made adjustments accordingly, but one editor refuses to do anything but revert

the other fight is over the use of the term american as meaning a US citizen (on two actor bio pages). my interpretation of wikipolicy about pov is that internationally understood terms are preferred. since "american" is ambiguous, first usage should be country-specific. after that, i have no problem with using it.

i know it seems trivial, but try asking someone from latin america for their opinion of the subject. lol

could use any suggestions for a way to resolve these without bloodshed?

Mel Wakabayashi

In reviewing the proposed hook for Wakabayashi, you noted: "Everything good, except he wasn't born in the camp." Actually, he was born in the camp. His family lived in Vancouver and was relocated to the Japanese Canadian internment camp at Slocan City, where his mother gave birth. The following quote from the "Little Mel" article should clear things up: "A year later, Hatsuye gave birth to her fourth child, Mel, in the barren camp. The government kept the Wakabayashis and the other Japanese-Canadians in the camp until the war ended." [9] I think his birth in an internment camp is a necessary part of the hook to show why his story is unusual and inspirational.
