Sven the Big Viking[edit]

Daniel, would you mind reverting your recent action to block Sven's talk page access? I do want to give him an opportunity to respond to my queries as I was considering whether to unblock. His request can always be declined later. I am currently not convinced either way that he his guilty or innocent, or that his Sven account was created with an intent to circumvent any rules. ~Amatulić (talk) 23:19, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have done so. I am now going to make a seriously overdue archiving of my talk page; I will leave only this thread. Daniel Case (talk) 03:32, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. No activity since then.
Any particular reason why you don't use an auto-archiver? The one I use on my talk page (User:MiszaBot) is quite flexible in its configuration options. ~Amatulić (talk) 19:24, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Daniel Case. Toobevr1244 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), whom you have blocked, is requesting to be unblocked. The request for unblock is on hold while waiting for a comment from you. Regards, Atama 04:12, 7 July 2011 (UTC) -- Atama 04:12, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Many thanks, Daniel Case, for handling that vandalism incident involving User:Njdevils6 on my talk page. In my antivandalism work I have been called just about every name in the book. But this is the first time a vandal has issued me warning and block tags. I will admit that it took me a few minutes to figure out “who shot john” when I saw all those warning on my talk page this morning! Regards, Pinethicket (talk) 16:28, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

University Club of Albany[edit]

I'm looking for the NRHP nom for this property. Is that online? Couldn't find it on the regular source website. upstateNYer 03:47, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Daniel Case. You have new messages at UpstateNYer's talk page.

I thought you'd be interested to see the progress made on the NRHP site below. Note the differences in the photos. New photo isn't the best. Need to get down there in the morning some time since they face east. But the upgrade in the façade is fantastic, if you ask me! upstateNYer 22:30, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Other Albany NRHP issues[edit]

Here are a couple other things I've found:

The mysterious library branch at 161 Washington Ave.
  • Harmanus Bleecker Library: Article describes it as a two-story brick structure (it's not). The building at 161 Washington Ave (Main Branch of Albany Public Library) looks too new to be on the NRHP, but too old to have been replaced since the 1996 nom went in. Façade of current building is painted to look Gothic, something you probably wouldn't do to an NRHP listing. So I don't know what happened; I'm clearly confused.
  • Rapp Road Community Historic District: I saw almost no evidence of any shotgun houses in this area. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the buildings have either been replaced or upgraded. I don't know what to do for the image on this listing. There's really nothing over there to photograph. Maybe a satellite photo of the area? The disappointing part is that the district is so recent, but I see so little evidence of it being district-worthy.
  • Whipple Cast and Wrought Iron Bowstring Truss Bridge: Never seen this before. Concerned it may have been demolished. Also, the address listed (1000 Delaware Ave) is in neighboring Bethlehem, not Albany.

Your thoughts?

I'd like to bring this to FL status. It seems like it shouldn't be too difficult, just time-consuming to get the descriptions in. I'm somewhat concerned because the only FLs WP:NRHP has are NHL listings in two states. The Indiana one uses the description box as a point to include sometimes very short information about something very notable about a building. That can't really happen for regular NRHP listings because some of them, quite frankly, aren't that notable outside their neighborhoods. My plan, as of now, would be to put in a short summary of each property (see coverage of Albany Union Station, Cherry Hill, and Church of the Holy Innocents as examples of where I would go). Obviously a more thorough intro is needed, and I still have a few sets of coordinates to confirm. Your thoughts on this as well? upstateNYer 00:17, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Think I figured out the library problem. The former library (NRHP listing) is on Dove Street between Washington and Spring. It's visible here. Thank God for Google street view. (Blah, narrow street, building right up against the sidewalk; gonna be a pain in the arse to take a photo of.) Interestingly, the library looks almost exactly like this one in the South End. upstateNYer 00:28, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was kind of hoping you'd offer to help. Because I'd be more than happy to take you up on it. Frankly, it shouldn't be all that difficult to do. If we each did one summary a day, it would be finished in no time, even considering the lead. upstateNYer 02:46, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, as of today, everything that still stands has a photo (I didn't make it to the Whipple Bridge yet, but I figure the old photo works fine for the time being). Are there any properties you want to call dibs on for the summaries or shall we just have at it? upstateNYer 18:47, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Question regarding blocked user making anonymous edits[edit]

This user is now making edits anonymously [1], [2] to get around the block. While the edit I noticed was not disruptive, it doesn't seem he has gotten the message. Is it kosher for a blocked registered user to make anonymous edits? --TimL (talk) 06:05, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. In hindsight maybe I could have RTFM on that. :-) I just say that because the answer was in plain sight, and I appreciate you pointing that out to me. --TimL (talk) 06:17, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Daniel, doing again one of your articles. Could you please have a look on this and tell me what exactly is meant with court, the translation the dictionary comes up with do not make sense. TIA, as always. --Matthiasb (talk) 19:40, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Like in English the German language also has a zillion of meanings of each word and many differnent words for the same meaning. It seems English and German are somewhat related ;-) well Hof can have the meaing of a court of justice (then it would be Gerichtshof) but more narrowly it means a kind of yard, a backyard maybe. Though this obviosly isn't meant here, since you mentioned in the article that the court is kind of weatherboard-sided so the meaning backyard might not be the right guess. I think it might be something like a corral for cattle or horses. (I must say that the OPRHP website with the nomination form does not work on my firefox installation so I can't try to look up the nomination if there are some images.) Or something like a garage or a shed, but not closed on all sides. Will try to browse the HABS images on the LOC website next. --Matthiasb (talk) 07:06, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
After brwosing the HABS images I think that the court is what can be seen on hese two images, what would make it simply Hof as in de:Bauernhof, stables and barns. --Matthiasb (talk) 17:25, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again :) Can you please semi-protect List of Days of our Lives cast members? Daily IP edits are racking up, and I am having to revert a LOT of changes. Most of them are incorrect formatting, unsourced speculation, etc. But it would help if only registered users could edit it for a while until it calms down. At least I can instruct them on the right way to edit the page. I'm not even sure if the numerous IP's get my warnings. Thanks! Rm994 (talk) 22:30, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dominotree/NPrice[edit]

Hi Daniel, You recently unblocked Dominotree (talk · contribs). For your information, I've just declined an unblock request from their alternate account NPrice (talk · contribs) as they were clearly continuing the same conduct which led to the original block before they were blocked for sock puppetry (thereby making them ineligible for WP:CLEANSTART). After a quick look at the history, I think it would be preferable to block the disruptive user rather than protect the article. Protection prevents other, non-disruptive editors from making constructive changes. Do you think there is a compelling reason to use protection instead of blocking? causa sui (talk) 23:38, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at Dror's talk page. I am assuming good faith that he is simply trying to improve the article, and I have been discussing. Based on the history alone, a block might be justified, but I looked at the talk page and decided to hold off. Daniel Case (talk) 02:21, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Highland Cottage[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Highland Cottage at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:44, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I approved the hook in good faith. As for the title, it happened to me that an article about a person was made a DAB (William Waterhouse, now bassoonist, not "my" article, but my friend), because others came up. Therefore I named Unionskirche with the location, - in Germany there are two on WP, though not yet here. I just thought there might be more than one Highland Cottage worth mentioning in the world, smile. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:57, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I just nominated a new article I wrote (Template talk:Did you know/George E. Crothers) for DYK. I forgot to include an image (a head shot of the subject, already in the article) in the DYK subpage, and I can't figure out how to add it properly now. Is this something that one of the DYK experts can easily fix? Or do you think it would be better if I wiped the subpage clean, started all over again, and allowed the template to do the work? Richwales (talk · contribs) 02:48, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I edited the subpage by hand (using another one as a guide), and I think I correctly inserted the image. Richwales (talk · contribs) 05:49, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. Thanks for reviewing my nomination. I just wanted to check to be sure I understood the process — did you also "approve" it, or did you just "review" it and it still needs to be separately "approved"? I see other nominations with a and "good to go" or "GTG" added to them, but it doesn't look like you did that in my case. Is there anything additional I need to do before final approval? The original blocking admin unblocked him on the condition that he requested that changes to the article which he says is about himself were made via the talk page. However he's never done that from what I can see of his contributions? He's only ever edited directly to the article. I'm in agreement though with HJ that it's more a lack of understanding how the encyclopedia works than vandalism. --5 albert square (talk) 12:12, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I wish I could. I haven't been to Aspen in 30 years. You accused me of forum shopping. You refused to block a person who had three blp warnings and instead of stopping their vandalism, just switched accounts. Sock puppets don't need to go through the whole litany of warnings, but apparently you don't know that. What was I supposed to do, just keep reverting the BLP violations over and over again when admins refuse to do their jobs? Response[edit]

I responded to what you wrote on my talk page. This is what I said:
You made an assumption. This is NOT the "only" aspect of the article that I care about to edit, as you did not see my very first edit, which was actually adding a whole paragraph in New York...and then soon after in Pennsyelvania. ACTUAL WORDS AND REFS. The image thing was bothering me because it made no real sense, and it seemed confusing and simply "out of place". As far as not finding anything in WP policy about "left-right" variation, there's this here: "Multiple images in the same article can be staggered right-and-left (for example, Timpani)." That's the WP policy RECOMMENDATION. Too much right-aligned with multiple and many images (hence the WP suggestion) simply does not look that great to the eyes. So the WP recommendation to alter-align it here and there. Regards. Hashem sfarim (talk) 03:59, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Example used[edit]

Noting here that I made the following comment in a fairly public place, using an example of a recent post to your talk page to illustrate the point I was making there. In fairness to you and Sandy, I thought it best to let you both know that I used you two as an example. I was rather dismayed at the tone you both took, and I suspect that I may take some heat from either or both of you for pointing this out, but I think it needs to be aired. While I disagree with Sandy's approach here (and I'll say this on her talk page), I agree with her that you are (still) overly personalizing the issue. If there is any future friction, can you please try a different approach and avoid comments like that one? Carcharoth (talk) 23:48, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note on my talk page saying you'd sent me an e-mail. To be honest, there is nothing in that (rather short e-mail) that couldn't be better dealt with or said on-wiki. Doing so would almost certainly avoid later misunderstandings. Carcharoth (talk) 01:45, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for denying his unblock request – it is clearly DragoLink08. Here's what I found funny about his request: "If there was something that I did that made it seem that way, tell me what it was and I promise that it will not happen again." → which, as I read it, means: "Tell me how I was being obvious, so the (inevitable) next time I make a sockpuppet, I'll know how to be more discrete with my block evasion". Do you mind checking my work?[edit]

While I'm by no means a new contributor, I have recently delved deeper into process, relisting and occasionally closing AfD procedures. Today I was asked to reopen and relist, and it occurred to me that I've seen this done, but never done it myself. Do you mind looking over my contributions to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mark Patton (archaeologist) and the appropriate deletion logs to make sure I've done this correctly? Block request[edit]

Could you implement a block on 131.247.244.20? It's clearly an IP sock of User:DragoLink08 based on the edits (see the IP's edit history – navbox color tweaking and cartoon/fantasy articles). Also see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/DragoLink08/Archive, of which you blocked Bullz-Eye13 (thanks by the way). Jrcla2 (talk) 02:50, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem ... biggest evidence, of course, is the range. Daniel Case (talk) 04:11, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel, I am wondering what the procedure is to request an IP range block? The reason I'm asking is because now that the confirmed sockpuppeter DragoLink08 is back at school, all of the suspected socks of his within the "131.2xx.xxx.xx" range are registered at the University of South Florida (I think). In other words, it is impossible to contain DragoLink08 as long as he can jump from computer to computer. He's had several new IPs pop up or become re-active in the past couple of weeks (example / example). If I need to take this to a formal 'hearing' I will, but if simply asking you to range block that school will suffice, then that'd be even better. It's getting frustrating to keep reverting this serial vandal every time he pops up on a new school computer. Jrcla2 (talk) 16:28, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the first thing would be to figure out the bottom and top of the range ... i.e., what's the highest and lowest IP he's used within that, and then perhaps sort of use those to find where the range begins and ends.

But before we do that, here's another idea: try getting in touch with the sysadmins at USF (and have your evidence together to share with them). It's quite likely that vandalizing and disrupting Wikipedia would violate his user agreement. They may even be able to look through their logs and match the edits with a specific user there and take such sanctions as may be appropriate, eliminating the need for us to do anything.

I have done this sort of thing before and I can help you (in fact, as an admin here, it may even be better for me to make the approach). Daniel Case (talk) 16:41, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to double check to be sure that these IPs are coming from USF, but another editor had told me they are. The lowest active IP that I'm aware of is 131.247.231.99 (note that this IP requested his talk page to be blanked on September 19th) while the highest range is 131.247.38.231 (currently blocked for WP:DUCK).
I think it's worth pointing out that User:131.204.254.72 was blocked for two years on April 28 as a schoolblock for using it as an attack proxy. Even though that IP doesn't exactly fit the "131.247.xxx.xx" pattern, it's damn close, not to mention that is shares the exact same editing patterns as DragoLink08 (navbox colors and Power Ranger-esque edits). Maybe, just maybe, USF will know who it is exactly because of that IP?
If you wouldn't mind contacting USF's sysadmins, that'd be awesome. I wouldn't know who to contact or what to really even say as a "normal" (non-admin) editor. Thoughts on all this? Jrcla2 (talk) 20:15, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniel, I hope you're well. My name is Matthew Roth and I'm a Storyteller working on the 2011 fundraiser with the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco. In past years, we've relied on Jimbo to carry the bulk of the fundraising weight and he's done very well helping us hit our yearly funding targets. This year, however, we're broadening the scope and reach of the fundraiser by incorporating more voices and different people on the funding banners and appeals that will start running full-time on November 7th. We're testing new messages and finding some really great results with editors and staff members of the Foundation. You can see the current progress of the tests here. I'm curious if you would want to participate in an interview with me as part of this process? The interviews usually last 60 minutes and involve a number of questions about your personal editing experiences, as well as general questions about Wikipedia and its impact in the world. In case you were wondering, ruhrfisch recommended you to me. Please let me know your thoughts by emailing mroth (at) wikimedia.org. Concerns about a soap opera editor[edit]

Hello, another soap opera page editor User:Musicfreak7676, has expressed concerns about User:TVFAN24. The concerns that I have particularly noticed are mostly adding new/returning characters before their actual debut date, despite multiple warnings to stop. Also, personally, I feel like he/she has some WP:OWN issues, if you see the comments on mine and Musicfreak7676's talk pages. What do you think? Is it really an issue that needs admin attention? This user, who is deeply passionate about soaps, has posted this on my Discussion Page and wanted me to share with others. Take a look:

"Hey Musicfreak, I wanted to let you know, since I enjoy your contributions and intent on improving all soap articles, that the user User:Gh87 is intentionally nominating hundreds (literally, hundreds) of soap character articles for deletion. In the past week, his grueling mistreatment has spread throughout the AMC characters most of all and has been trying to delete GL, ATWT, OLTL, DAYS, Santa Barbara, Sunset Beach (etc) characters nd history articles. He is also deleting images, all of which users have spent countless hours working on that he/she wants to delete due to "lack of notability". Just look at the contribution page - it is literally sickening at what he/she is doing. Account and IP users have tried to help but he bosses everyone around and gets admins on his side when others try to save the articles. Please help save these articles because I know you appreciate and love the soap world. Please spread the word to other users to participate in deletion discussions to save them. Again, please help and spread the word. Otherwise, users no longer have any articles to contribute for after he/she deletes them.149.4.204.17 (talk) 15:38, 11 October 2011 (UTC)"[reply]

I see that you blocked an IP (block log here), saying "Revoking talk page access: inappropriate use of user talk page while blocked: IP wasn't even blocked; user was just trolling". Unblock on hold[edit]

There is a request for unblock at User talk:Dparrish. You placed a spamusername block on the user. The user has linked to his own web site, but the link does not look to me like spam. What do you think? JamesBWatson (talk) 14:32, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's not the content of the link that gave rise to the block so much as his username, the same as the website linked. I have explained this there. Daniel Case (talk) 15:51, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Checking autoblocks[edit]

Hi! If someone's unblock request says, for example, Autoblocked because your IP address was recently used by "Aram-van", go to Special:Contributions/Aram-van and try the "global contributions" link on the bottom. I do think it's a bug in the software, not a feature -- but if someone with global login is blocked on enwiki, and edits on (in this case) hy-wiki or ru-wiki, they'll trigger an autoblock on enwiki. I'm not quite sure how to handle this, though. --jpgordon::==( o ) 20:22, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reporting on IP Address for Vandalism[edit]

I am reporting 71.250.134.58 for vandalism to The Young and the Restless and its cast page. They are adding cast prior to their airdate in all regions, and adding cast members to "return" that are false and not confirmed through creditable sources. They've done it for General Hospital as well, and other members who edit these pages aren't giving warnings or trying to help the situation and it's frustrating that they can't help, they want others to do their dirty work. Musicfreak7676 (talk) 16:16, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This person is doing it still, and on General Hospital please block them!! Musicfreak7676 (talk) 02:30, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am re-reporting this IP 71.250.134.58 again because they're once again making vandalism edits. They haven't learned, and are making work for those of us who edit these pages harder. Musicfreak7676 (talk) 17:46, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
ANNOYING ME AGAIN!!! They're back again and have already deleted a cast member from General Hospital and cannot follow the rules. The character stays until they are OFF the series, and aren't deleted, they're moved to Past Cast. Can they be re-banned or something? Or even for longer? Sorry if I'm continually annoying you, I'm just tired of certain people acting like they know how to edit these pages, or that they own them. This person just came back and is already making these type of edits again, without sourcing, and without reason. Are they not getting the picture of WHY they're getting blocked? Hey Daniel, I'm curious about your thinking... How is CoffeeWhore worse than Pornisawesome? LadyofShalott 05:10, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm tired and about to call it a night, but let me try ... I suppose I should at least have let Pornisawesome know that there was a concern. But, I think, the main reason "porn" was set as a trigger string for the bot is that it's very often used by spammers.

You know, as I type, it also occurs to me that "whore" is a pejorative used on people whereas "porn" is not something you can call someone.

You also might note that I didn't block either one straight away. Daniel Case (talk) 05:23, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, it's not that big a deal; I just would have made opposite calls to what you did - saying non-violation in the case of CW (which seems to me to be obviously a non-sexual and lighthearted use of the term) and saying wait in the case of PIA, because that is the name that sounds to me like it might be someone not here to improve the encyclopedia. Reporting TVFAN24[edit]

I am reporting member TVFAN24 for continually adding someone on The Young and the Restless to contracted cast list, when the show is not a proven, first source. Soap Opera Digest has confirmed that the actress' gig in recurring, so she belongs under recurring. And this person continually has made vandalism edits for months, and we've given him break after break, and I'm over giving him breaks. I want him banned or unable to make such edits. He's been spoken to many times over this. Musicfreak7676 (talk) 22:38, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to take a moment and defend myself. Diana Degarmo as of this week is under contract and I tried to source that by adding November 21st's show with the ending credits stating that fact. Musicfreak7676 has been hounding me for months and I am very sick of it. I have been a very good editor and if you look I have been following guidelines. I don't appreciate Musicfreak undoing an edit that I sourced to show was correct. If Soap Opera Digest says she is recurring that is a future event but for this week, the ending credits state she is on contract. TVFAN24 (talk) 06:15, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad you spoke up, which is why I'm glad I just didn't go and block you, either. The two of you need to resolve this, preferably on WT:SOAPS. Daniel Case (talk) 06:19, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Dan. I appreciate that.  :)

For right now I am editing back in, Besides whats right is right and in this case I know I am right and I even have proof. TVFAN24 (talk) 06:21, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

At least I know I have you in my corner in this particular situation. TVFAN24 (talk) 06:22, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Only in the sense that I'm not going to block based on this. I would like to see the community reach a consensus on this, and both of you abide by that. Daniel Case (talk) 06:27, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just so I know that if he goes to another administrator and tries to get me blocked, I can say that you have already evaluated this situation. He has no right to put her in recurring when this week's credits say she is on contract. If I see a week that shows she is recurring then I will of course make the necessary adjustments. But for right now I don't deserve to be blocked for no reason like he wants me to be. TVFAN24 (talk) 06:40, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I can't speak for another admin and what they might want to do. But I will say that if you don't want to be blocked, don't edit war over this. If you see it starting, ask for page protection instead of reverting (and be mindful of this page, too). Daniel Case (talk) 14:53, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
TVFAN, Soap Opera Digest, as if said before, over-rides the soap opera itself. And TVFAN, we've tried coming to you but you never come to us. So instead of dealing with you, cause due to past conflicts, you've ignored us, we go to hire administration. I have NOTHING against you, contrary to what you believe. But you don't have a sourceable reason to put her on contract, SOD confirmed it's a recurring role, not a contract one. DeGarmo has discussed she's not planning on being there for a while, and that it's short-term and is not expected to be there during Idol's time at the CBS lot. Soap Opera Digest over-rides Soap Opera Digest. And I know I'm right because I've been told SOD over-rides a soap opera's credits or even their actual episodes. And you just wanna still have ownership of the shows because you feel you're entitled to such. Musicfreak7676 (talk) 17:45, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was invited by Musicfreak7676 on my talk page to adress this issue.
Soap Opera Digest or any other credible soap magazine (Soap Opera Network, SID, SOW, etc) are all acceptable sources if the story cannot be found first in a more mainstream source (New York Times, CNN, LA Times, EW, Deadline, etc). Although all the soap magazines have reported in the past a story that turned out to be false, these soaps magazines have generally reported stories that were true. Besides, all media sources, including CNN and the NY Times, make mistakes. Whether we like it or not, many articles regarding soaps will never make it in mainstream media. Thus, we have to rely on these soap magazines. What should be avoided are fan sites (We Love Soaps, Michael Fairman Soaps, etc). Theses fan sites take their stories from soap magazines anyway.
Hope this answers your questions.Farine (talk) 00:28, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hannylim[edit]

Hey, thanks for helping me get unblocked! Hannylim (talk) 15:17, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I received this letter from the Maths group and I'm happy to publish it here. I had to subscribe myself here to do this![edit]

I sent this letter to every Wikipedia administrator I could contact:

Hello,

Good morning, I am writing to submit my case. I was banned from the edit page "square pyramidal number" and also my talk page, I think unfairly, because I did not want to do any act of vandalism, nor for that page or elsewhere. I added to that page a proof of the formula that is used on that page, because, in my opinion, it is useful for the reader to have the formula and its origin. Probably this has sparked World War III, because (please check on the history of the page) the user did not want and then removed it, motivating with "I don't generally find long strings of algebraic manipulation very illuminating, and this is no exception. Revert." This is a personal point of view!!!! I thought they could give some more explanation. I then put the proof asking what was wrong: first, I was told that the proof was too long, so I proceeded to shorten it, then I was told that a proof stops the reading (?) then I put a hidden field , so I was told the use of this field is discouraged, so I removed it again. At the end of the day I promised myself to give up, until someone wrote " (Formula: IMO this proof should stay. It's very clever and simple.)", then another has corrected the errors of English, so I have taken courage to continue. Unfortunately, others have reported this as "edit war" and at the end of the day I am suspended. So I wrote an unblock request because I did not feel it right and I was rejected several times. You can check my talk page (86.24.46.135). Ok, I will accept it. But, in all this mess, an administrator made me angry because he blocked my talk page. This is deeply unfair.

I come from a country where for many years there was no freedom of speech and very familiar with these behaviors.

So I asked a friend to post on my page a protest and the response was this: "Socking to get yourself unblocked is a really, really bad idea. Socking after your talk page access has-been revoked for multiple querulous unblock requests is an even worse idea. I Have Had to semi-protect this page for the duration of the block. Shortly I will be blocking the IP you used, and Extending the block over here. have a nice day. No, make That have a nice two weeks. - Daniel Case (talk) 16:08, 21 November 2011 (UTC) " These behaviors, in this case the last sentence, the final part of the response, deeply offend those who read and who is motivated to make a contribution to a democratic encyclopedia like Wikipedia. As I said I come from a country where democracy has been lost for a long time and so I think it's important, rather than censure, understand. Now I do not want anyone to get in trouble, I don't want to be unblocked, but I would be forever grateful if we all could explain this to Mr. Daniel Case, that these attitudes are not repeated ever again, especially by a administrator, who should be the guarantor of this democracy, because this kind of sentences are used by dictators and make growing the discontent of the people. Bringing knowledge in the world is not a small thing (I think that China will teach us something). Try to be aware of the mission that you agreed to complete. Do not make the editors of Wikipedia to become discouraged and lose the will to write, because that day democracy will be lost.

With the firmest intentions to pursue this freedom I greet you. Sorry for my english.

Sincerely

Pietro Baima Sarget (86.24.46.135) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Romancio (talkcontribs) 20:47, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't want to deal with it? Didn't want to leave it to some one who knows the drill? So now after dismissing the report as "only for persistent vandals" which this one already was at the time you dismissed it find some admin that knows about applying range blocks (they're out there) or look for some help somewhere else. Expand your admin knowledge by acknowledging that this IP was reported to the proper board in the first place. Still not convinced? Go to AN for advise. If that little errant is to much for you just give up your tools and you'll be never bothered with such tasks again. That persistent vandal you encouraged is yours now. Enjoy. TMCk (talk) 04:11, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To make it simple and easy for your understanding: At some point when you applied for adminship you must have said that you can do more good on WP than a "regular editor" but as it turns out you're not. You not even know that "persistent vandals" are to be reported to AIV b/c as you said yourself, this (AIV-board) is for "persistent vandals only..." and yet you dismissed one that fit exacly that cathegory. Can you see the problem with your reasoning here?TMCk (talk) 04:23, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sure you're talking to the right admin? I didn't dismiss it ... just said we'd need a rangeblock if this guy was IP-hopping since it would therefore be useless to block just the one IP as he likely had a multitude available. That is the result of long experience as an admin. If you can compile a list of the IPs he used, we can take to AN/I and ask for a rangeblock. Daniel Case (talk) 16:35, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Addendum: I noticed that someone else semi-protected the page ... I should have thought of that; didn't realize it was just that one article he was vandalizing. If you'd said that I would have semi'ed the page. Daniel Case (talk) 16:42, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You clearly haven't read the report I made.TMCk (talk) 19:07, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Which report? Your original AIV? All I did was attempt to start a conversation which other users were free to join in and add to, and possibly take further action. Could you clarify? Daniel Case (talk) 04:47, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He keeps undoing the work I have been doing. And he keeps editing site beacuse of his own opinion about ex the IBO boxing title. Plus he kind off attacks me an other users. Ex: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Alexander_Povetkin&action=history

Look at the way he talks to other users and how he arguments.

Thanks.

Thanks very much[edit]

You also helped me before, back in April. Thank you very much for helping me now with this abusive individual. May I reiterate that I and many, many others are grateful to those of you who take on the additional workload of adminship. To scour the admin noticeboard pages and get involved in time-consuming issues in addition to your own editing — that's a lot of extra work, and it's greatly appreciated. Jargon flinging[edit]

I kinda think that things such as "We're checkin' to see if you're down wit' OPP." are amusing to us, but perhaps utterly baffling to the unwitting newbie who is inexplicably prevented from editing Wikipedia through no fault of their own. --jpgordon::==( o ) 05:41, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Talent, Idol and DWTS[edit]

Hey Dan,

I was wondering if you could help me out. There are a few users who keep editing the info box on Amerca's Got Talent, American Idol and Dancing With the Stars Pages. For many years, the presenters and judges have been listed in chronological order and now these few people are rearranging them and listing those who began with the show at the bottom, they are also not putting the full years they were with the show. I am trying to resolve this issue with them on those pages respective talk pages but they are just refusing to hear my side of the story. Since you are an administrator, I thought you could delve more into the issue and maybe even protect those three pages for a while. Its been so frustrating but I thought you may have a solution to all this madness. Thanks alot. TVFAN24 (talk) 20:30, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have seen many of the "past judges" put to the bottom, since the top represents the most current judges. I've never really seen it done any other way. Musicfreak7676 (talk) 02:08, 2 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The organization of the contest could have been better. In any case, I'd like to do this type of thing again, and any suggestions on how to organize it better would be appreciated. I'll probably open up a thread after New Year's at WT:NRHP on this. All the best.

A while back you banned this user for username vio, as well as some issues with various articles. I believe the user is back as a sock. Its likely a legit sock (based on my understanding of the rules), since you banned their original name. However a bunch of the same articles were all recreated in short order by the user, so I feel its still a COI. I nominated for AFD here if you wish to weigh in. (Including me being out of line and this is now ok with the new name).

Yea, I think we should wait til more official reports come out. To my surprise, the HPC has just released their summary on it, so I'll be adding that. At latest, the most appropriate time would be when the NCDC reports are out. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:00, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
So, I thought that the HPC report would've helped the article immeasurably (since it was the first post-analysis on the event), only it looks like they based majority of the report off of the Wikipedia article! I'm used to that from hurricane articles though :) --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:17, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

IP Report[edit]

I am reporting a new IP, 71.60.101.30 for continually adding cast members to different soap operas that are unsourced and/or false. They've continually done such with Bobbie Eakes returning to B&B as Macy Alexander and it's quite annoying. Musicfreak7676 (talk) 03:29, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Colour Dispute[edit]

There is an IP disputing that because all soap opera character pages have a colour, that The Bold and the Beautiful should too. But for as long as I've been editing, there have been no colours. Their excuse.. "because I think they remain to have color" which is owning ownership of articles. And according to Infobox television/colour|The Bold and the Beautiful [add the linking, there IS no colour for B&B], there is no colour for B&B characters. Please provide a clear answer for this. Musicfreak7676 (talk) 03:32, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to let you know that User talk:Geoffreyp7 is still on hold for you to review; he tried to replace with a regular unblock request, I'm guessing thinking that you forgot about it. –MuZemike 09:32, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am also confused here. On the talk page of the blocked greendeer he is alledged to be a sockpuppet of Rjeng2000, as is A-Boy 265. It is late, and I am tired, but I thought that I saw an autoblock on Rjeng2000; it is not there now, so I may have been looking at another page in error. But something odd is going on, unless they have simply been tagged incorrectly. Having said that, the recent unblock request, which I was in process of declined when you and I edit-conflicted, is strange. He admits to letting his brother and "some friends" use his computer; he knows all of their passwords but says that only the friends vandalised. I have trouble accepting that. --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 22:16, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Autoblock is there. I'm tired. --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 22:21, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel; you have blocked Guesswhat?ihateyou for very obvious reasons with which I have, of course, no argument. BoogeLouie is apparently caught up as collateral damage in the associated IP block. He has been editing here for several years, without any problem that I can see; do you think that an IP exemption would be acceptable? --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 22:33, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have seen your comment at User talk:ArishiaNishi. In these circumstances I think it is best to refer the matter to the blocking administrator/checkuser, since they will know better than you or I whether the account making the unblock request fits the pattern that led to the block. Derek Boogaard[edit]

Kudos on that major expansion! I just finished reading the Times series, and found it very heartbreaking. Trying to discuss the role of enforcers here in Canada is almost sacrilegious. The dominant opinion is "hey, it's their choice". I think Branch sort of put the lie to that in Part 1, in the sense that with Derek's size, and the community he was part of, it was kind of inevitable that he would be a brawler. I also thought Betteman came off as pretty callous in the video interview. Anyways, cheers. The Interior (Talk) 00:07, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us!
