GOCE November drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the October 2012 competition, and prizes have been issued. The November 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The December 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our fourth tranche of Guild coordinators will expire at the end of December. Nominations are open for the fifth tranche of coordinators, who will serve from 1 January to 30 June 2013. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

Editing the Holocaust

The Longerich book is excellent as is the Snyder book, The Bloodlands. They both have Kindle eds. I would encourage you to do some work on this piece. I would be glad to help in any way I can. I have tip toed around substantive edits for a long time now: it is a can of worms full of wiggling personal agendas. One of the reasons it is so long is the inclusion of at least ten subsections under Non Jewish. They don't really belong in this piece, and each has its own WP article, but attempts to remove calls forth accusations of not giving significance to the millions of others who were murdered etc. It is a pity that such an important article has been such an unwieldly mess for a long time already.--Joel Mc (talk) 21:43, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

What criteria are you using to remove inactive editors from the list? I only removed a couple extremely obvious ones that I found by clicking redlinks. I wanted to know so I could help but be consistent with what you did so far. —Torchiest talkedits 23:31, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

I removed anyone who hasn't edited in a year and a half. I found one blocked as a compromised account, and found two that had been re-named. We can use an external editor at the end of the process to re-alphabetise the list and then remove any duplicates. I've done all from M to Z. I can't believe this, but seven of those I deleted registered on 2011-01-18 or -19, made between 40 and 100 edits, and stopped editing within a week of the end of April 2011. An eighth also registered on 2011-01-18, but managed 119 edits and lasted about a month longer. That's 8 out of 22 I deleted. Can't be just a coincidence, surely? You can't dictate other people's behaviour or control it. The only person's behaviour you can control is your own. I understand that you're angry, but posting at ANI is not the way to resolve these kinds of disputes. Posting there often just generates drama; thats why they call it WP:Dramaboard. Admins are not in any special position where they are allowed to tell other people how to act unless there's clear-cut personal attacks a lot more severe than this. So there's no admin action that can be taken in this instance, other than a warning of some kind, which any editor is free to do. My advice to you is similar to NE Ent's: Focus strictly on the content, not on the behaviour of the other editors. When they make remarks about your behaviour, just ignore it, and keep focusing on the content. Sometimes it's hard to do, but that's what I do all the time, and it sure works for me. -- Dianna (talk) 02:33, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Me or any other admin has no special powers. "Someone else needs to warn him" is not actually true; you are setting up expectations for admin behaviour that have no basis in the way Wikipedia actually works. You are expecting admins to behave like parents or babysitters, and that's not part of the admin toolset. You want the behaviour to stop; the behaviour does not stop; this makes you angry because the world is not behaving in the way you expect it to behave. Might i suggest here that you gotta do here is accept that the world is what it is. People do and say stuff all the time that we don't like and we can't change that. The only person's behaviour you can control is your own. I saw your close of this speedy deletion nomination "based on the information contained on the Provincial Archives website, which allows use of their images for educational purposes" and it confused me. How is this different than an image which has permission for use on Wikipedia, which by my understanding we treat exactly the same as every other piece of non-free content?   • The December 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is currently in the submissions stage. Submit your best December copy edit there before the end of the month. Submissions end, and discussion and voting begin, on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC).
  • Voting is in progress for the November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest. Everyone is welcome to vote, whether they have entered the contest or not.
  • From Sunday 16 December to Saturday 22 December, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} from January 2012. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded.
  • January 2013 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Khandoba - Speedy deletion

Hello Dianna, I did not quite get what the reasons are for deleting the image from the Khandoba article. I would appreciate further elaboration on this matter. Thanks. Jonathansammy (talk) 14:22, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately the image qualifies for speedy deletion because the uploader did not take the picture. It was scanned from another source such as a postcard or a print. If you look around the perimeter of the image you can see a white border that shows the image is a scan and not a digital photograph. The original upload log says: "Author :- Vishal Prakash Dudhane -- Vishal1976 , Tis is the photo of God Khandoba of Jejuri temple main court , I have scaned this photo and spend 75 rupees and i had to work hard for getting this origanal image of god Khando", which demonstrates that the uploader did not take the picture, but has uploaded a scan of a print that he bought. That means we don't have permission of the original photographer. The original photographer is the person who owns the copyright on the image, and if we don't have their permission to display the photo, we are in violation of copyright law. I understand that you have only so much time available, (as have we all). Please allow me to repeat what I wrote specifically to you: that I understood your point that we do not need the sources in the lead if the info is in the article. But I asked you if you see how I am arguing that the info is an oversimplification by synthesis and not in the article with the way the disputed sentence is currently worded?
Nick-D has now agreed with me: "the sentence is essentially correct but a bit simplistic (in that Hitler wasn't the inventor of his views and the Nazi state and German society also played a key role in what took place between 1933 and 1945)..." and "...I'd suggest broadening this paragraph somewhat to acknowledge the wider responsibility for the war and the killings."
Woogie10whas also agreed with me that the the sentence is problematical and not supported by the source. He has also pointed out that he source is inaccurate: "Rummel’s figures are definitely not mainstream [nor] the definitive answer to the question of the number of Hitler’s victims. Why use him as the only source here on Wikipedia?".
Finally Paul Siebert, after arguing against my inference of "alone" has now contradicted his own argument by writing. "all WWII deaths except Chinese and Japanese are attributable to the policy of Nazi Germany (i.e. to Hitler's policy)."

Just FYI, 1 File:Rowdy_rathore_music_poster.jpg, 218x347 is 75646, well within 100,000 pixel "bounds". No worries, and no need to go lower res, so I've reverted it. The intention is to be a viewable, but still within fair use bounds, version of the original, without infringing the owner's rights. And 2 there's a glitch with the uploader and file management system which occasionally makes it seem like a resized image has not been uploaded. A bug has been filed, but AFAIK no action has taken place. Expect weirdness until it's addressed. --Lexein (talk) 19:03, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Squid

There's possibly a glitch affecting the appearance of certain images, e.g. File:Alicanto, Inc. Logo.pdf, and although I've manually processed the files correctly in Illustrator, the thumbnails nevertheless appear badly compressed when uploaded. I'm unfamiliar with the Squid backend and essentially waiting for the developers to investigate and resolve the anomaly, but in the meanwhile I'd appreciate it if someone were to delete those Alicanto uploads as superfluous. Hello Diannaa! We've been in touch before. I wanted to get the opinion of another editor on something and saw you were online; what do you think about the idea of a bot to automatically update Template:Vandalism information? Updating it manually is tedious and the amount changes quickly. A bot would complement the situation perfectly IMO. Your protection of 2012 delhi rape case

Hello,

I understand the BLP concerns when you semi-protected 2012 Delhi gang rape case article. But please also note that this article was far from complete and was getting massive contributions from IP addresses, mainly because of the coverage the issue has got in India.

Can I please request you to remove that protection from the page, not due to BLP concerns, but to improve the article? Almost every single edit we got there was way constructive, and we were getting very regular contributions until the protection. So can the protection be please reverted until such further time the article becomes stable and comprehensive?

That will be a lot better than the Semi. But I am not exactly sure how it is displayed to the IPs who are editing it. I am slightly concerned if every potential contributor would understand how exactly the pending changes would work, and some might just be confused to see their edits not coming up.
I personally would want to overstep the BLP concerns and let the article take shape on its own. That way, we will get a way better article than one on Page protection. Incorrect information

On TV3 (Malaysia) there are some incorrect information.

For example the "normally tuned to 3" is very vague. I have TV3 on channel 4 because I use auto scan. But it is always channel 32 if you are in Tioman, 12 if you are in Kuala Lumpur. And in my office, I have TV3 tuned to channel 10.

As well as 24 hour broadcast, it's actually startet in 1 January 2011 at 02:00. And it has NEVER been 24-hour in the 90's. In 1996 TV3 broadcast from 9:00 to 24:00.--110.49.240.242 (talk) 04:11, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Re: Copyright question

I know that files taken by the government, and the Air Force by extension, are in the public domain. Text, by extension, I would imagine follows that course as well. I see that the article is part of Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from the Air Force Historical Research Agency, which is in the public domain. The question is whether or not afhra.ah.mil's PD status extends to the whole site. I would lean yes towards that, but can't say for 100% certainty. Wizardman 18:27, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Holocaust

On Template:The Holocaust users Tulipsword & Antidiskriminator have been reverting their edits back to the article against any kind of consensus. As far as I can understand there has been established no consensus in support of their edits, yet they insist that neither Peacemaker67 nor I (I reverted their latest inclusion) can see it. If there is such a consensus I'd accept it and never again intervene in that matter, but could you as an involved but somewhat more detached from the debates admin point it out to me?--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 23:54, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

The discussions on the template talk page and the article talk page are the only discussions on this topic that I am aware of. As an administrator, I am involved and unable to use the tools on this edit war. As an editor, I decided to walk away from both the template and the article for the time being, as they have both become battlegrounds and my talents lie elsewhere. -- Dianna (talk) 00:07, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Obviously, you can't and shouldn't use admin tools given the low-level issues, but would you say that there is a consensus for that inclusion? Personally, I can't see it but maybe I didn't notice something that Tulipsword did.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 01:12, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
My opinion was that there was no consensus for the change. It's also my opinion that the vast majority of historians do not include Serbian nationals killed by the Ustaše as victims of the Holocaust, a term which is normally reserved for people, particularly Jews, killed directly by the regime of Nazi Germany.
