Hello Dreamy Jazz,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

@Nyiko Austin hello. The gradient of a straight line is a number which represents the ratio of vertical change over horizontal change (which is often represented as "rise over run"). The gradient of a straight line can be calculated using the formula where (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) are points on this straight line and m is the gradient of the line. In this case you would use the points you have to calculate the gradient by substituting x and y with the appropriate values. Hi. To ensure proper attribution, this would require me to undelete the pages and then move them to your userspace. However, I don't think I am allowed by policy to undelete these pages as they were deleted following a community discussion (at AfD). Therefore, I think your best course of action is to go to deletion review which allows you to start a discussion as to whether the page(s) could be undeleted into your userspace for improvement. RfA 2021 review update

Thanks so much for participating in Phase 1 of the RfA 2021 review. 8 out of the 21 issues discussed were found to have consensus. Thanks to our closers of Phase 1, Primefac and Wugapodes.

The following had consensus support of participating editors:

  1. Corrosive RfA atmosphere
    The atmosphere at RfA is deeply unpleasant. This makes it so fewer candidates wish to run and also means that some members of our community don't comment/vote.
  2. Level of scrutiny
    Many editors believe it would be unpleasant to have so much attention focused on them. This includes being indirectly a part of watchlists and editors going through your edit history with the chance that some event, possibly a relatively trivial event, becomes the focus of editor discussion for up to a week.
  3. Standards needed to pass keep rising
    It used to be far easier to pass RfA however the standards necessary to pass have continued to rise such that only "perfect" candidates will pass now.
  4. Too few candidates
    There are too few candidates. This not only limits the number of new admin we get but also makes it harder to identify other RfA issues because we have such a small sample size.
  5. "No need for the tools" is a poor reason as we can find work for new admins

The following issues had a rough consensus of support from editors:

  1. Lifetime tenure (high stakes atmosphere)
    Because RfA carries with it lifetime tenure, granting any given editor sysop feels incredibly important. This creates a risk adverse and high stakes atmosphere.
  2. Admin permissions and unbundling
    There is a large gap between the permissions an editor can obtain and the admin toolset. This brings increased scrutiny for RFA candidates, as editors evaluate their feasibility in lots of areas.
  3. RfA should not be the only road to adminship
    Right now, RfA is the only way we can get new admins, but it doesn't have to be.

Please consider joining the brainstorming which will last for the next 1-2 weeks. This will be followed by Phase 2, a 30 day discussion to consider solutions to the problems identified in Phase 1.

I wonder, whether you think it's a good idea to put all of these pages under PC. Many seem to have woefully little watchers or people willing to actually maintain them (which isn't helped by the fact some have grown way out of proportion); and they're of course all magnets for self-promotion and the like. @Ritchie333, that's fine by me. If you think that the content is worth saving (i.e. WP:TNT isn't the best idea), then you have my support for undeletion. Well, to be clear I think it saves it from speedy deletion, but I don't know what else. From my experience, an AfD could go either way, but it'll probably hold because of the Billboard chart source (although going down that road might not actually make the article any better, making the AfD a bit pointless). Hello, Dreamy Jazz,

I was wondering if there is a reason why checkusers and admins wouldn't identify the sockmaster in a sockpuppet's blocking notice. Specifically, I'm talking about User:Muqtada al-Azadar. There might be a reason why this information is omitted which is why I'm asking. As an admin who patrols CSD categories, we need to check CSD G5s tagged pages to make sure that the deletion tagging is appropriate since G5 is frequently misunderstood by even experienced editors. So it's necessary to make sure that ban evasion is involved and not mere sockpuppetry or the use of multiple accounts. Thanks for any insight you can provide. Liz Read! @Liz, hi. I CU blocked after running CU in the report Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/SheryOfficial/Archive#05_November_2021. I found that Muqtada al-Azadar and Banglamar were connected to each other and so CU blocked for the seemingly deliberate attempt to present as two separate people.
However, I was not as sure confirming that these accounts were related to SheryOfficial. As such I wanted a admin/clerk/CU who has handled a number of reports for this case to provide input on whether these accounts have made similar edits to previous socks. Therefore I did not note the connection to the case in the block log as they may have been seen as socks of another case or were unrelated to any other sockmaster. I think in this case the determination was these accounts were socks based on their edits.
As a general rule I don't include a SPI case in the block log unless they are a found to be a sock of that case, so to reduce confusion in the case of an unblock request. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 12:49, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
Well, then I think we have a problem. First, I understand everything you say here and your process, and that of other checkusers, seems very sound. However, there are some very eager CSD page taggers who seem to know whenever a user is blocked for having multiple accounts and they tag all of their page creations as CSD G5s. I do not understand the rush to do this or even how they are aware of the process occurring in SPI cases. There was a day a few months ago where I untagged dozens of pages that were mistakenly tagged CSD G5. I think there are some admins who avoid checking this category because there is a lot of misunderstanding about it, that it is for users who are evading a block with a sockpuppet and not simply for editors who are discovered to be editing with multiple accounts.
The way I determine if a CSD G5 tag is legit is by looking at the page creator's account and reading the blocking summary. It's most helpful when there is a link to a recent SPI case so I can go and see that the original account has been blocked for some time and that the page creator is only the most recent sockpuppet. When the blocking summary simply says "Checkuser block" or "Multiple accounts", then I'm not sure what to do because it's not clear who the sockmaster is, if there even is a sockmaster or if ban evasion is involved. The reason why this can be important is that the page creator might have created dozens and dozens of pages so the page deletion can be considerable if the sockpuppet is the primary contributor to these pages.
I realize that this is a question I should be posing to checkusers as a group, not just you, but your case was just a recent example of this dilemma. I thought about posting this at the SPI talk page but that is a general page of all matters regarding SPI cases. I have no access to the functionaries email list so I can't think of a location frequented by checkusers where I could pose this question. Any ideas? Liz Read! Talk! 03:12, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

@Liz I think this is best posed on the SPI talk page. Apart from the CU IRC and functionary mailing list there isn't really a place where lots of CUs coordinate. By posting at the SPI talk you'll probably get the active CUs and patrolling admin opinions (as patrolling admins can block without linking to the case sometimes). I do agree that the block log containing the sockmaster is very helpful and not including it should only be done with good reason. Hi. This list that you are editing should only have incidents which already have an article about them. Also, to clarify you cannot delete accounts on this Wikipedia. What you were warned might happen is a block, which is where your account is prevented from editing. This does not, though, delete your account.
I suggest ensuring that any information you add is supported by reliable sources. In the edits that were reverted you cited another wiki. Wikis are not considered reliable sources, and so your edits were reverted due to that. I see that you have re-instated your edits. I strongly suggest that if they are reverted again to not re-add them. This is because this may be considered edit warring (where people revert each other again and again) which may lead to a block simply for that. @Nirdis the editor who moved it to draftspace is in my opinion unlikely to be related to any of the other competitors in that competition. They are a well established user who regularly moves articles to draftspace when they are not suitable for mainspace. The review will occur and if it's declined you will receive further information as to how to improve the draft before re-submission. You may also post at the editors talk page who moved the article to draftspace to get further clarification. That is at User talk:Onel5969 and I will notify @Onel5969: of this discussion if they would prefer to provide input here (which Onel5969, you are welcome to if you desire). Hi there, Quite A Character! I did not redact your comments and responses from this user talk page, nor the other user talk page that you linked to above. Such redaction would be unnecessary, outside of the scope in which suppression is designed to address, and would not be in compliance with Wikipedia's policy regarding the appropriate use of suppression. I have, however, redacted your IP address from these edits instead. Quite A Character, I understand that you were editing this page and Robby.is.on's user talk page while logged out due to fear of retaliation by (one or more) other users. Because of this, I have gone ahead and suppressed your IP information so that it is no longer visible.
However, you must understand something very important: The decision I made to go ahead and suppress your IP information was made in spirit of the oversight policy. The letter of the policy is worded to restrict the removal of IP address information unless it was publicly logged due edits accidentally made while logged out, or if a user without an account requests its removal. What I'm telling you is, is that I did you a favor. This does not mean, nor does it give you the freedom or ability, to just "edit while you're logged out" when you feel like it, or when doing so is more convenient or an easier way out.
Even in situations or cases where you legitimately believe that the edits, comments, and actions you're about to make using your account will result in significant or extreme harassment, retaliation, or wiki-stalking against you - it is never ever "more safe" for you to edit while you're logged out in order to try and dissuade or lessen the likelihood of becoming the target of such harassment. Always use your account. Let's play the "what if game" and assume that you're correct - editors are looking to harass you, and your edits here are going to trigger a harassment campaign by these users toward you. By doing what you were trying to do earlier, it's significantly more likely that the harassing users will see the edits made by your IP address, easily connect the dots, and associate those edits to be made by you and from your account. Now look what you've done... you just exposed your IP address to them, which they'll now have! How is that more safe or secure for you compared to just editing using your account? In regards to privacy, you basically just gave these harassing users more ammunition and more power, ability, and leverage to harass you even further!
See my point? Do not purposefully edit while logged out in order to try and evade scrutiny for your edits and comments - especially if you believe that your edits will attract harassment and other abuse toward you. Not only can doing so be seen as bad faith deception against the community if identified by legitimate editors, it's actually going to make things much worse for you when its discovered by any bad faith users who wish to cause you fear or distress. I am okay with redacting your IP address this time because I'm 95%+ sure that you didn't understand the high risk and negative consequences possible by doing so. If you purposefully edit while logged out again, and request redaction down the road, an oversighter, having learned that you were warned here not to so again, will likely to be much less willing to grant your request. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:57, 16 December 2021 (UTC)

After this journey of 6/7 years, i'm already too fed up with creating accounts, I'll be honest the first one that was created it was for my brother (that why it share the same ip address), it wasn't even mine, then I was very inexperienced on Wikipedia, but over time i learned, to the point that the accounts i created were to escape from the past, my porpurse wasn't to sockpuppet, but unfortunelly it was what i did (given that my Wikipedia account was globally blocked, and only later when I remembered the account password did I realize this). Then i tried to unlock the account, through the unblock ticket system, email the stewards from wikipedia and not even a response from the process I received (as for the email). The only thing I want is for my original account Martimc123 to be unlocked, my purpose is not to vandalize but to contribute, and I'm fed up with this situation almost to the point of giving up, but this is now it's free will, the only thing i want is help to unlock my account globally and close this chapter, now if you want to help me it's something else. As I mentioned earlier I don't want to vandalize, my edits reflect that, I just want to contribute and I ask for a last chance if you want to help me (or know how to help me great). Again, the only thing that i want is for help and not create enemies.

Seeing as you were previously unlocked after a request to the stewards, and then re-locked I suspect they are not going to be as willing to accept an appeal. I cannot remove your global lock, and the only way you can appeal this is by emailing stewards@wikimedia.org. If the appeal is declined, then you will likely have to wait without any sockpuppetry for a certain period which could be around 6 months. If you are unlocked, then you will also need to appeal your block on the account Martimc123 too. If you continue to evade your block while you have an appeal open it is likely a reason that they would decline your appeal immediately, so I suggest refraining from evading your block. I'm inclined to believe in Mr. Martim, is not a vandal if you take everything into consideration and his edits are mostly good (sourced for that matter on most occasions); that being said, i do acknowledge that sockpuppetry is a "capital offence" here on WP. From my part, i will cease to create problems from now on (most of my actions, reports and edit summaries included, were clearly due to frustration out of his socking).

As you already have rollback on another wiki and have done some vandalism reverting on this wiki it's clear to me that you are trusted enough to have rollback. If you would like the rollback rights on this wiki, I can give them to you as long as you confirm you have read WP:Rollback to look for any differences between the Dutch Wikipedia's rollback policies and the English Wikipedia's rollback. If you are asked to enable the newcomer homepage, you should follow the link to your preferences and tick the preference that says "Display newcomer homepage" (this may be written in German) and then press the blue Save button at the bottom of your preferences page. RFA 2021 Completed

The 2021 re-examination of RFA has been completed. 23 (plus 2 variants) ideas were proposed. Over 200 editors participated in this final phase. Three changes gained consensus and two proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration. Thanks to all who helped to close the discussion, and in particular Primefac, Lee Vilenski, and Ymblanter for closing the most difficult conversations and for TonyBallioni for closing the review of one of the closes.

The following proposals gained consensus and have all been implemented:

  1. Revision of standard question 1 to Why are you interested in becoming an administrator? Special thanks to xaosflux for help with implementation.
  2. A new process, Administrative Action Review (XRV) designed to review if an editor's specific use of an advanced permission, including the admin tools, is consistent with policy in a process similar to that of deletion review and move review. Thanks to all the editors who contributed (and are continuing to contribute) to the discussion of how to implement this proposal.
  3. Removal of autopatrol from the administrator's toolkit. Special thanks to Wugapodes and Seddon for their help with implementation.

The following proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration:

  1. An option for people to run for temporary adminship (proposal, discussion, & close)
  2. An optional election process (proposal & discussion and close review & re-close)

Editors who wish to discuss these ideas or other ideas on how to try to address any of the six issues identified during phase 1 for which no proposal gained are encouraged to do so at RFA's talk page or an appropriate village pump.

A final and huge thanks all those who participated in this effort to improve our RFA process over the last 4 months.

You can use the article wizard to create the article which will guide you through how to create the draft article. How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

Declined arbitration case request

yes, your prompt closure of my arbitration request was helpful as it did not procrastinate the prescribed dispute resolution procedure which i will now follow even though i am fully aware it will get nowhere, seeing as it has been going on for at least 2000 years already and is sure to carry on for another 2000 or so - but as wikipedia is increasingly being used by children as an information source, i feel it important to make some effort to help their minds not be brainwashed by continued relentless propaganda claiming to be "The One And Only Truth".Djhbrown (talk) 23:36, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Dreamy Jazz,

I wasn't involved in the arbitration case request about the Warsaw Concentration Camp so I am just getting around to reading the noticeboard summary of the committee's position. I know that drafts of statements like this are circulated via email and many people contribute to them but you ultimately signed your name as representing the committee so maybe you can communicate to the authors that I thought it was a very thoughtful and complete statement regarding the disruption that happened during that case request. The committee sometimes issues just a one sentence statement in response to decisions and sometimes that is all that is needed but in this case, they went into some detail about different aspects of the situation and I was impressed. It was articulate and hits the right tone, encouraging editors to contribute to this subject area and, indirectly, I think it serves to discourage case requests that might not have been thoroughly considered or that personally attack other editors. Discretionary sanctions topic area changes

In a process that began last year with WP:DS2021, the Arbitration Committee is evaluating Discretionary Sanctions (DS) in order to improve it. A larger package of reforms is slated for sometime this year. From the work done so far, it became clear a number of areas may no longer need DS or that some DS areas may be overly broad.

The topics proposed for revocation are:

  • Senkaku islands
  • Waldorf education
  • Ancient Egyptian race controversy
  • Scientology
  • Landmark worldwide

The topics proposed for a rewording of what is covered under DS are:

  • India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan
  • Armenia/Azerbaijan

Additionally any Article probation topics not already revoked are proposed for revocation.

Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2021/Candidates

It's kind of a silly dispute. My one revert back in November was because I figured it wasn't up to any editor other than an arbitrator or an arbitrator clerk to change anything on that page. I didn't revert because of "correctness". Grammatically, I believe that one way is more common/colloquial, and the other is technically correct. Anyway, the only reason I'm commenting here is because why lock the page and throw it open to the usual dispute resolution on the Talk page? @Bbb23 my action of locking the page for a few days instead of doing a "command" decision is that I consider this process separate and distinct to what arb clerks / arbitrators directly control (in that there are election commissioners and coordinators who clerk these pages). My action here was simply as a normal administrator and thought that following the full protect method (due to the participants having extendedconfirmed) would be best to either encourage discussion or prevent any further edit warring. <j>But perhaps I could use my super-clerk abilities and protect the page until the end of the world :)</j>. Putting "only" in front of terms intended to be "only'd" (and not in front of any not so intended) seems trivially obvious to me, but some writers are prickly about being corrected -- at least I think that's what's happening.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Some assistance needed

Hi, DJ, please take a look at User talk:Rusty4321#Speedy tagging. As you can see, I've been suspicious of Rusty's behavior since I came across them at CSD. In my view, there's enough evidence of socking to warrant a check, but I'm also contacting you because of the possible OS needed for the edit filter log, which, now in retrospect, perhaps I shouldn't have highlighted. What is most disturbing is the infobox I believe was added by the IP. As I mentioned in the dialog, I can't see the edits to BW's userpage at the same time as the IP tripped the filter because those edits were suppressed. My guess is that Rusty is not BW, which crossed my mind, but for some reason is mimicking them, e.g., the creation of two alternate accounts about a week after creating the main account. @Bbb23, I've hidden the entries so it should be fine to now reference the existence of them (as non-OS won't be able to view them). I can confirm for future reference, because the reason for OS does not cover this part of their userpage, that BlazeWolf left this comment on their userpage: Since I will not be around to change it, I give permission to any user to come by and change it back, and also uncomment the out of town template. The edit itself seems to revert the userpage back to a previous version inline with the permission given by BlazeWolf.
Given your recommendation to check this user and on my own review of the situation, I did run a check on Rusty4321. I could not see any accounts that were not already publicly disclosed to Rusty4321, and so CU evidence shows no violation of WP:SOCK. Hello Dreamyjazz! I'm sorry to bother you on your talk page. I wanted to ask a question about this SPI case I filed. It seems like I may have jumped on it a little too quickly, given that the potential sock account I listed only put had two edits. The timing made it seem kind of obvious, but it looks like he was actually tied to another account I didn't list. Did I jump the gun on that too early? @Spf121188 if you feel that two accounts are related to each other, then regardless of the number of edits they have made do feel free to report them. In this particular case I don't think you were jumping to SPI too quickly. Given the number of accounts and IPs performing vandalism requesting page protection and/or blocks at WP:AIV is likely to be much faster than WP:SPI in future, but this doesn't mean reporting at SPI is necessarily not needed.   • Special:Nuke will now provide the standard deletion reasons (editable at MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown) to use when mass-deleting pages. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [9]
  • At Wikipedias, all new accounts now get the Growth features by default when creating an account. Communities are encouraged to update their help resources. Previously, only 80% of new accounts would get the Growth features. A few Wikipedias remain unaffected by this change. [10]
  • You can now prevent specific images that are used in a page from appearing in other locations, such as within PagePreviews or Search results. This is done with the markup class=notpageimage. For example, [[File:Example.png|class=notpageimage]]. [11]
  • There has been a change to the HTML of Special:Contributions, Special:MergeHistory, and History pages, to support the grouping of changes by date in the mobile skin. While unlikely, this may affect gadgets and user scripts. A list of all the HTML changes is on Phabricator.

  • Administrators will soon have the option to delete/undelete the associated "talk" page when they are deleting a given page. An API endpoint with this option will also be available. This was a request from the 2021 Wishlist Survey.

That spihelper thing

Okay, well after a whole lot of edit-warring and wheel-warring with myself, I finally got my changes to spihelper to not faily catastrophically... and then immediately ran into a new bug, one that seems to be taking place in a part of the code I'm not familiar with, so I think I have to throw in the towel at this point.

  • I'm not sure why you deleted Lines 795 to 808. That part of the code isn't about socklist detection, and removes the ability to find users based on {{noping}} etc.
  • Line 831 needs to be var resultsUsersAndIps = spiHelperExtractSocks(pagetext) as currently the line just has spiHelperExtractSocks which does not provide the page text to the function, so no users from the socklist are being listed in the block/links view. an RfC, not a RfC

When I write out RfC as request for comment I want to write a request for comment vs an request for comment as the first sounds more right to me. I then from that thought a is the right one to use.
Also from my understanding you use 'an' when the next word starts with a vowel / starts with the sound of a vowel. In this case, R isn't a vowel so if I'm not wrong 'a' is the right usage.

When it is written "RfC", it is pronounced as "are-ef-see". "an" is used when the word's pronunciation starts with a vowel, like "hour". "Hour" is almost universally used with "an", but the "user" is always a user, not an user, as the pronunciation is something like "yuzer". Depending on pronunciation, "an year" or "a year" can be used. Question from NSNW on Help:Find sources (23:22, 6 March 2022)

Hello there, so I've just started looking at more advanced sources ie: Scholarly articles; books; published reports. I've found it to be very time consuming and difficult. I look at other articles and see sources from places that I've never been told to look at. Specifically for books/reports, they are very hard to find online let alone free to view and cite. At the same time I am not in a good position to find physical copies of the books for me to read and cite where appropriate. I'm just wondering if you could tell me a more simple and easy way to find sources? Just for your information I'm not the most experienced editor. @NSNW library memberships, depending on the location and country, often provide access to online versions of books / reports. These are an alternative to finding the book in a physical copy.
Using Google Scholar to find journal articles, peer reviewed reports etc. and Google Books for books often allows you to find sources easier than just through the default Google Search.
Finally, if you have not already looked at Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Library, that is a great tool for it you do not have access to paywalled resources through your library.
My suggestions only benefit you if you are looking for books that have been digitalised or have digital versions. For older and less cited books, it may be that there isn't a digital version yet or if there is it may be inaccessible to you.
