Welcome to the tenth newsletter from the Growth team!

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.

General news

  • Growth team features are now fully deployed in Arabic Wikipedia and Basque Wikipedia (along with Czech, Korean, and Vietnamese Wikipedias). If your community is enthusiastic about welcoming newcomers, we encourage you to contact us so that we can verify together if your wiki is eligible. Then, go through the checklist to start the process of configuring the features.
  • We have deployed features that help newcomers find their newcomer homepage. These features were successful, and more than doubled the number of newcomers who find their homepage. In Czech Wikipedia, 72% of newcomers visit their homepage and in Korean Wikipedia, 49% of newcomers visit their homepage.
  • You can now join the Growth discussion space on the Wikimedia Space. This space has been created during Wikimania, to coordinate initiatives around welcoming newcomers. Please come and say hello!

    • Alignment on newcomer retention: It seems like Wikimania attendees generally believe that newcomer retention is an important problem.
    • Connecting offline to online: Enthusiasm for ideas that connect our features better to offline events, such as making homepage mentors correspond to offline mentors.
    • Mentor dashboard: Experienced users requested a dashboard with which they could monitor newcomers who may need help.

Newcomer tasks -- feedback needed!

  • The Growth team's main project right now is newcomer tasks, which will suggest easy edits for newcomers. It will be built as a new module for the newcomer homepage.
  • We hope that this project will help newcomers build their skills before attempting more difficult edits, such as creating new articles or adding images.
  • These are the three main challenges we've been working on:
    • Where to find the tasks? After considering many different sources for tasks, we've decided to start by using maintenance templates, which are applied by editors on most wikis, and including tasks like copy editing, adding links, and adding references.
    • How to match to interests? Research shows that users are more likely to work on articles that are related to their interests. We are currently prototyping methods to ask newcomers their interests and then find articles that match.
    • How to guide the newcomer? Once a newcomer has selected a recommended article, they will need guidance on how to complete the edit. We have decided to use the help panel to provide that guidance while the newcomer edits.
  • We are currently engineering on this feature, and we recently published notes from user tests that give mostly positive feedback.
  • You can explore the design for newcomer tasks in these interactive mockups. We hope to hear from you about your thoughts on the project talk page. Do you think this could be helpful for newcomers? What are we missing?

Prospect Park South

I've noticed your edits to Prospect Park South. As someone who is very familiar with this community, I can authoritatively speak on this. Until recently, "Prospect Park South" which is in Flatbush, only referred to the historical district. The area to the north and east of the historical district was almost invariably considered Flatbush, not Prospect Park South. Real estate agents and interests, fearing the name "Flatbush", have attempted to rename these areas "Prospect Park South". Outside of perhaps a few new residents and real estate agents/interests, very few in the community would term this area Prospect Park South. So in essence, your map on Prospect Park South is indeed inaccurate. G. Capo (talk) 22:51, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

G. Capo, thanks for your input. I already changed the map, but the anonymous user reverted it because the map didn't update on English Wikipedia, only on commons. Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.

Talk Pages

The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

Mobile visual editor

The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Edit Cards

What happens when you click on a link. The new Edit Card is bigger and has more options for editing links.

Toolbar

The editing toolbar is changing in the mobile visual editor. The old system had two different toolbars. Now, all the buttons are together. Tell the team what you think about the new toolbar.
  • In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
    • One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
    • New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
    • Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
  • Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.

Wikimania

The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.

Looking ahead

  • Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
  • Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

Photographers

It was pleasant chatting with you at Brooklyn Public Library this evening. I wonder if others of us photographers ought to meet, for example at a restaurant, to talk at greater length. Cameras, picture editing, and software for organizing might be among the initial topics. I was thinking of bringing it up at WikiWednesday, but it would be better if you can be among the participants. WMNYC's monthly chapter meetings are too short and small for a breakout session about photography or anything else. The far larger Wikiconference North America will probably have a dedicated session, but I don't expect the majority of NYC Wikiphotographers to be with me there and it's only an annual event. @Rhododendrites: So, we've got me and two Ryans on board. Excellent start. If either of you shows up for today's editathon at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Fordham/LGBTQ Music or tomorrow's Wikiwednesday, we can chat about venues, further recruitment and other matters. As an old retired guy I'm the least scheduled, hence can go along with whatever fits the needs of you younger and busier people. Most months, I meet other old guys at the Park Plaza Diner in Brooklyn Heights, which I like very much for such purposes. Good food, reasonable prices, uncrowded on weeknights, access by Citibike and several subway lines, quiet, tolerant of nerds with laptops, and fast reliable Wi-Fi. Naturally I'm open to other suggestions, especially since I don't know where you guys live and another part of town may be better for you and even for me. Hmm, a quick look at the schedule of WCNA Boston shows no session generally about photography, though the one on Wiki Loves Monuments may be relevant enough. I was recently discussing grant proposals: someone suggested grants for wiki photographers to purchase better camera equipment but didn't know what they might need. We could submit a new grant proposal sometime, I have a decent idea of good cameras, lenses, tripods, Photoshop, etc. that would come in handy... ɱ (talk) 19:52, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
Ɱ, if you want to make a remote meeting with us, that may be a good idea. I think a new grant proposal would be a really good idea. I was sent there a number of years ago to attend a housing fair (which was dumb because I had no money and almost all the opportunities were for women only).
