WikiProject Ice Hockey Newsletter Dear Flibirigit/ice hockey! You are receiving this newsletter because you have signed up as a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey. The purpose of this newsletter is to update on the goings on of the project, as there have been major changes, and a lot of new recognized content in the past few weeks. If you are an inactive user, you probably won't recognize the new and improved state of the WikiProject! From the project, Maxim. New recognized content By Maxim
Article Improvement By Maxim Upon some discussion on the WikiProject talk page, the Article Improvement Drive page was revamped by Krm500 and Maxim. It was renamed Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Article Improvement, and it includes two section. The first section is called articles in dire need of improvement. It list articles, usually important, that are in very poor shape. The second section is called requested help. Users list an article they request help improving a certain article, which will facilitate collaboration, which is the aim of any WikiProject. There is one article currently listed there, Henrik Lundqvist, here. The goal is to at least get it to Good article status. Diacritics By Maxim In the past few weeks, there has been quite heated discussion about the use of diacritics in article name. The current guideline is using diacritics in the pages of articles of all player names which require them, but redirects are exempt. Task forces By Maxim This task force was initiated by Krm500. Its current goal is to improve Henrik Lundqvist to Good or Featured article status. It covers all Swedish clubs, leagues and competitions and associated articles, players and coaches that are Swedish, or have played/coached for a Swedish club, and arenas in Sweden. They plan to eventually operate as a sort of a sub-project, which will have its own articles for creation, ranking importance and quality of articles, and co-ordinate article improvement. Its current members are Krm500, Bamsefar75, and CLAES. This task force was initiated by Bsroiaadn. Its goal is to improve New Jersey Devils to Featured Topic status. Although it currently meets the required article count, the task force wishes to improve it further. Its area of coverage is very similar to the Sweden Ice Hockey task force. Its members are Bsroiaadn, JHMM13, FutureNJGov, Sportskido8, Michael Greiner, JRWalko, and Soxrock. Requested Images By Maxim

New recognized content By Maxim Especially due to the featured topic drive, there have been many new featured lists promoted concerning NHL awards. Here's the full list of all the 13 FL's promoted since the last newsletter.[1][2]
There have been no new good articles or featured articles. Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy has been given A-Class status due to multiple issues raised at FLC.
Did You Know? By Maxim
Featured Topic Drive By Maxim Started by User:Scorpion0422, the aim of this drive is to make NHL awards a featured topic. A featured topic is basically a set of very high quality articles (good articles and featured articles/lists). In this case, the topic is NHL awards. Many users have helped, including Scorpion0422, Resolute, Serte, Hasek is the best, Maxim, Croat Canuck, Spike Wilbury, FutureNJGov, and T Rex/Dinosaur puppy. The progress has been very good; there are 12 featured lists promoted, and 2 good articles:
Check the project page if you are interested in helping out. Although it's closer to being done than not, there's still work to be done. The next topic that might be tackled is Stanley Cup, but this remains purely speculative and in discussion. |

USHL and AHL Maps
I've created a map for the USHL so far. Let me know what you think. It's just a start, it could go in a completely different direction if you like. 100%; 50%. (The original is SVG and can be altered easily, these are just to show what it looks like so far.)

Here you go: Image:AHL Team Locations.png, Image:USHL Team Locations.png. I had a problem with the text display as an SVG so I had to convert them to PNGs but that shouldn't be a problem. I didn't make the Finland map, it already existed. Here is the Australian map.
If you look at the code for the Elitserien map it shows that it is using a blank image with the dots superimposed over it. You cannot view a larger version with the dots. vıdıoman (talk • contribs) 13:38, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Task forces We are working to create a new task force within the WikiProject to deal with topics related to the Pittsburgh Penguins. It hasn't been created yet; but it aims to expand articles based on former and current Pittsburgh Penguins players and articles. Good luck! New Administrators Currently 0 promoted admins! Be the first one at WP:RFA. Featured Topic Drive By Maxim The original featured topic drive, initiated by Scorpion0422, has concluded succesfully. National Hockey League awards is now a featured topic, with 24 articles in total. Of them, 20 are featured lists, one is a featured article, and the other three are trophy articles that were too short to become featured lists. Eight users signed up to help out, shown here. IIHF
I've gone through and added the template to all the pages that exist for member nations (full members, that is). The hard part is going to be creating pages for all the members that don't have pages. We have to upload the logo, create the page, make sure the colors match, etc. That's definitely not going to be pretty, but it has to be done. Anthony Hit me up... 15:48, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: Swedish Rookie of the Year

- I was hoping that too, but haven't got around to it (some things I set out to do never get done). Today I saw a source in English on the Daniel Larsson page. At least it is rather accurate, despite it is a borderline forum/blog entry. The background info about the award is a bit harder to come by. So far I have only seen that in Swedish, most recently here (no English page despite they attempt to be available in English). For example, there are facts to be found there about how much cash the alma mater hockey club of the player gets (the Swedish term is "moderklubb"), which people the jury has been made up of this year, and the short fact note that appears on Elitserien about which the awarding bodies are. There are also short wiki articles Swedish, French, and German. --Bamsefar75 (talk) 08:13, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

ECHL task force
I have been working on many ECHL articles since I joined Wikipedia a few years ago and am in the process of petitioning WikiProject Ice Hockey for a separate ECHL task force. Old edit
Old edit, not serious, but I thought I'd mention it [2] in this series of edits you added some info to the article that was wrong on a couple of accounts and since I've only now gotten around to cleaning it up, I found it. Kangwon Land didn't make the playoffs in their first year finishing 7th of 9 [3] (I realize the title says 04/05 but that is a typo on the AL's part, you can see the 05/06 year on the chart itself) and in the second season they defeated Anyang in the quarter finals, they didn't lose to them. They ended up losing to the Paper Cranes in the semifinals[4].--Crossmr (talk) 02:04, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Namibia national inline hockey team
The article Namibia national inline hockey team has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Trivial and non-notable. Fails WP:GNG. Also see WP:SPORTCRIT. Full of redlinks. Created as part of a large swath of pages by a single user who has since left.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. - Template:Hockey team is only meant to be used in Canadian Hockey League teams and its feeder leaguers. It will eventually be reworked to look more like Template:Pro hockey team, which was written to have more functionality and resemble Template:NHL Team. Thanks for editing. - Sometimes editors just get busy, or have a lack of interest or lack of knowledge on the subject. You might want to go to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ice Hockey and remind editors to leave a comment. Failing which, you might try Wikipedia:Third opinion or Wikipedia:Editor assistance. I'd like to see it resolved also, but I have no preference to the outcome. Steve Smith
Hockeydb has another Steve Smith attributed to those games. It seems like that site and Legends of Hockey are in conflict here; do you know for sure which of them is right here? — GT 11:53, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- I know from doing research on hockey, that hockeydb is riddled with many errors. Steve Smith is also credited as playing with the Petes on the Memorial Cup rosters, available from the Canadian Hockey League archives, and on Legendsofhockey, which I find is much more reliable. If you are ever at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, you can use the archives in person. Flibirigit 16:52, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Patt Quinn help
HI Jason! I am brand new to Wikipedia. And have no idea about all this coding, but I know a great deal about hockey and want so much to help with your Patt Quinn page. A lot of it I know personally but can verify from public sources. For example, he went to law school only one year at that private school back east. He finished up in San Diego and passed the California bar in 1968? He used his newly acquired legal knowledge to try to double deal on my team, the Kings with whom he had a contract, and use that contract to try to get a better deal w another team. That's how he got banned from the NHL. So his law school and bar admission dates are important. Oh there is so much more.. He was not a nice man. Almost all of the links are bad in the article, for a guy who was fired from every job he ever had and was banned completely from the NHL, you sure can't tell he was anything but an angel. Ice hockey facts
Why can’t you put in Eric Lindros biography something about his injuries being attributed to him not playing for Quebec. It’s a fact. Ask any NHL player during Erics career. No one likes a whiner in hockey. The NBA is more suited for that personality. Thanks.

Not to be confused with Don "Dunk" McCallum aka "Big Cal" AAA + WIHL + NOHA Hockey Player
Hello! I am a librarian in Edmonton Alberta, and I'm working with an older fellow named Donald Gary McCallum born Sep 6 1939, aka "Big Cal" aka Don "Dunk" McCallum. Donald is hockey player whose got his own incredible story to tell (we are working on a short film, and book). The problem is in 1965 Ed Chenoweth gave him the nickname Don "Dunk" McCallum after the more famous "Dunc McCallum", and this is how he's known in the hockey community (he knows Don Cherry!). This is a problem, because whenever he tries to tell his story, Dunc McCallum 1940-1983 is the first google result and people (including journalists) assume he is lying, or crazy, or a ghost! He does not claim to be Dunc McCallum 1940-1983. However this article is making it impossible to tell his story.
Rather than attempt to edit the article, or create an entirely new wikipedia article, and probably get it wrong -- I thought i'd ask you you to help by making a small edit. Something like "Not to be confused with Don 'Dunk' McCallum aka "Big Cal" AAA + WIHL + NOHA Hockey Player', or whatever you think woud be most appropriate. We have alot of evidence and material of Don McCallum's Hockey Career, and can provide such as necessary. We can also exchange contact information, but i'm not sure this is place? - The first thing we need to do is measure up the resources you have, compared to Wikipedia:Your first article. For example, to write an article on a person, Wikipedia requires there be reliable third party resources, such as newspaper, magazines, books, or online articles. It would be difficult to go further without those. I read the Google plus page you created. I am usure at this time if Mr. McCallum meets the WP:GNG or WP:NHOCKEY requirements. Hi - my name is Colin Stein. I am Lloyd Pollock's youngest grandson. The image for Lloyd Pollock posted on http://wecshof.org/inductees/lloyd-pollock, reproduced on your Wikipedia entry for him, is wrong. Can you please remove it, and replace it with this (http://wecshof.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Lloyd-Pollock-Windsor2.jpg)? I have emailed the Windsor Essex County Sports Hall of Fame to ask them to remove the photo from their website as well, and replace with a correct image. In addition to seeing the clear differences in facial structure and features between the hockey player and the correct image of Lloyd, you can also compare his date of birth (1909) with the apparent year of the photo for this Windsor Spitfire player (would have to be 1940s or 1950s) - this player is a junior hockey player younger than age 25, whereas Lloyd would have been in his 30s or 40s. Just wanted to stop by and say great work on this article so far - I've always lamented the fact that our article on that team is so short. I have actually done a lot of research on the players of the team in the past years, for the SIHR (I even spoke to John Scott about the team & tournament years ago) and it's quite the story, as many of those early Canadian national teams are (the 1949 Sudbury Wolves who won 47-0 against Denmark at the 1949 Ice Hockey World Championships is another great one). There's a sentence I don't understand in the lede of E. A. Gilroy. As you've written all of the article, I thought it would be easiest to ask about it here. The sentence is "On the eve of the Olympics, Gilroy chose to allow the two players to participate as a gesture of sportsmanship towards Great Britain, and objected to Canada being portrayed as in protest." WikiConference North America
Hi Flibirigit, long time no speak! I hope all is well. I am planning on having a WikiConference North America sports panel December 12 3:00 EST. This is something that has never been done before and there are many sports which are "native" to North America and part of the America identity. What it seems to be is that we (you, me, and other members of WikiSports) will be in a Zoom (or other video conferencing app) to discuss our experiences in editing sports on Wikipedia. These can range from combating vandalism to how to best get permission to use sports photos. The organizers of WikiConference North America (WCNA) created an Etherpad surrounding planning which I will link here. if you Command F "sports" you will find the section. Your addition there is interesting, but does not make much sense. When Canada lost to Czechoslovakia they had two remaining games, and only had one loss, so could have still won gold. as E. A's grandson, I wanted to thank you for the very impressive and incredibly thorough Wikipedia page
I too have been doing research on my grandfather's hockey career, although with more emphasis on his coaching/management of Portage's franchise in the MPL from 1905-06, 1906-07 and 1907-08. I am familiar with the majority of the content mentioned in your write - up, including the wrangling with the entire Maritime region, the protest at the 1936 Olympics, his business and political ventures, etc. but certainly not all the detail that was contained in your article. I did discover a picture of the Smiths Falls 1901-02 Senior team for whom he played, the only evidence I have of his own PLAYING career. Smiths Falls was part of the epicentre of the game of hockey at the turn of the last century, being part of the Ottawa Valley. Note that most of the players on those old Portage's teams came from that area - Brockville, Renfrew, Ottawa plus Art Serviss and Skinner Poulon who were Smiths Falls natives. I also heard numerous anecdotes from my father ( Rex) while growing up in Portage as a kid (e. g., appointing Clarence Campbell as head referee for an Allan Cup final, and bringing him in for a briefing (via train) in our living room at 144 Garland St., P la P. George Nagobads
A couple weeks ago, you reverted an edit that I made to George Nagobads where I added a internal link to Latvia. Your rationale was: "revert as per MOS:GEOLINK, country names do not need links". I read GEOLINK and it says (underlining for emphasis): For geographic places specified with the name of the larger territorial unit following a comma, generally do not link the larger unit.
This does not say that countries don't need to be linked, but that directly linking the country after a city or other smaller territorial unit is inadvisable due to the dreaded "sea of blue".
However, I scrolled further down to find MOS:OL, which is the more relevant subsection. To amalgamate the guidance given there as it pertains to countries: Unless particularly relevant to the context in the article, the names of countries with which most readers will be at least somewhat familiar (e.g., Japan/Japanese, Brazil/Brazilian) are usually not linked. But try to be conscious of your own demographic biases – what is well known in your age group, line of work, or country may be less known in others.
Basically, it says that countries should be linked sparingly, usually when they are pertinent to the subject being discussed, or are relatively obscure to the average reader. I think Latvia falls into a bit of a grey area where it could go either way, though I personally lean towards "obscure" as far as the English-speaking world is concerned.
In any case, the Manuel of Style is pretty vaguely written on this subject, so I wanted to look into where the community stands on this issue. That sent me down a whole different rabbit hole where I eventually found this RfC on the MOS:LINK talk page from 2021. The consensus there was... ah, who are we kidding? There was no consensus on that page.
I didn't realize that linking countries was such a contentious issue. I know for a fact that I've done it before, and while it isn't generally encouraged, it's not really outside of policy, either. My thinking was that adding links to countries was convenient for the reader (as it has often been for me), but if the Wikipedia community generally frowns upon the practice, I won't stand in their way. It doesn't feel like there's ever been a very solid consensus formed either way, and I don't feel like the discussions on the talk page have gotten input from a broad enough segment of the community. I spent an hour or two falling down that rabbit hole, and I wanted to share with someone what I learned. Most of the users you interact with are well familiar with an edit summary (I've been editing for 17 years)...we simply find certain edits so miniscule and uncontroversial that we often omit them.
You trolling certain users' talk pages can be considered disruptive editing, per such policies as WP:HOUNDING and WP:HUSH. Furthermore, they can be perceived as hypocritical, as most of YOUR edits don't include an edit summary either.

Hello. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Aarne_Honkavaara&oldid=prev&diff=1182460620 is not a correct reading of MOS:DATE. See MOS:DATETIES. "For any given article, the choice of date format and the choice of national variety of English". The key is national variety of English. Finland does not have a national variety of English so DATETIES does not apply. DATETIES is effective for countries such as US, UK, and India. I don't read or write Finnish, but I don't think a Finnish person would write today's date as "29 October 2023" since "October" is probably not a Finnish word.
