Typical Victory Ship
Painting of the Battle of Trafalgar by Auguste Mayer

Hi Godonb, just asking why you removed the subheadings on the above page. My overall aim is to make it easy for a random reader to look up something. I therefore modeled the shipindex page on the List of Shipwrecks pages, which have monthly subheadings and daily subheadings, with vessels listed in alpha order in the daily sub-sublist. By using subheads I hoped that someone coming from another article could go directly to the vessel they were looking for. In a shipindex page I can't really line up vessels in alpha order. I line them up in chrono order, but that is less useable to a reader because they don't know which Constantia they are looking for, and the event that brought them to the page could belong equally well to several vessels. Do you have any suggestions for a better way to do this? Cheers, Acad Ronin (talk) 17:40, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Acad, the vessels are sorted by year. The intermediate titles WILL confuse the reader. They break the list up. These are NOT sections of the list, in which case titles would be justified. Just excessive titles! gidonb (talk) 17:44, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You asked how to facilitate faster navigation in the list. Just add "sorted by year" to the intro sentence! gidonb (talk) 17:49, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have made a few improvements. Feel free to tweak. My expertise here is information and transportation, not so much ships! gidonb (talk) 17:57, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Gidonb, the sentence you added doesn't hurt, but doesn't really address any of the issues that bother me. The headings were already in chrono order, which anybody accessing the list would see immediately, and which the headings don't change. The issue is someone clicking on the name of the vessel in some other article. With the headings, I can create a link that takes one directly to the item on the shipindex page. This is not a big deal with only three or four vessels, only one of which is clearly the relevant vessel. But after Russia's defeat of Napoleon, half a dozen or more British vessels were launched with the name Emperor Alexander, all of about the same size and within a year or two of each other. Finding the one one wants may take some careful reading. That's the problem I am trying to solve with headings. Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 20:45, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Acad Ronin, if you have HUGE numbers of vessels, do insert headers. For example by century. Note that these would need to be bi-leveled in order not to break up the text too much. It should be a rare occurrence for these lists. gidonb (talk) 21:18, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
An actual problem in this list: Constantia (1782 VOC ship) is improperly hatnoted. gidonb (talk) 21:24, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed. See Constantia (1782 ship). gidonb (talk) 16:28, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well, we do not control what others think, do we? We state our opinion, make the case, and then accept the community's decisions. gidonb (talk) 23:15, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, though to me it does feel like WP:IDONTLIKEIT rather than any actual guideline-based view. Garuda3 (talk) 23:45, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It can also be that they take the guidelines and policies to the strictest place they possibly can. If it was under the radar IDONTLIKEIT, as you suggest, there would also be a flip side. Non-transit articles where they are more lenient. I don't see that. Plus best not to worry too much about others and just to continue working by our policies. gidonb (talk) 23:58, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Poole railway station

Good morning/afternoon/evening! (please choose the best greeting based on your time zone).

Thanks for handling the transfer of information into the Poole article so the redirect made sense. Generally, when merging information like that, it's best practice to use an edit summary like "merged content from County Gates to Poole" so there's a clear chain back to the original article, in case someone wants to see the old page history. I also added the {{Copied}} tag to the talk pages of both, so it's clear that some merging happened. Joyous! | Talk 16:26, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Joyous!, my edit was a new and independent expansion of the transportation section of Poole. NOT a merge. At the time, the discussion on County Gates was ongoing and could have gone in any direction. In the AfD, there was a suggestion that County Gates should be mentioned in the Poole article, for a redirect to make sense. So I expanded the article in a manner that would justify dropping the (also expanded) name of County Gates Gyrator, once more verifying that this was a good course of action. You have interpreted my edits in a quite different way than intended and tagged two articles accordingly. While these templates put a claim on unique content that I have added to Poole, it's still fine with me. Tying articles better together also has virtues. Thank you for caring! gidonb (talk) 17:05, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The situation of these three pages is not exactly the same (because language family plays no role in these cases), but because many issues are similar, I've nominated them as well, and am curious what you think. Map of the Trans-African Highway System in 2019

Hi Gidonb, could you tell me your thoughts on this article [1]? Thanks. Chamaemelum (talk) 23:57, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

User:Chamaemelum, it's a duplicate of an existing article. Don't worry, I'll fix it! For now it can pass as the historic view and future view but these are one and the same road. gidonb (talk) 23:44, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Which road article is it a duplicate of? It looks like it is separate, though connected, to A1/E1.
Also, for other articles, what do you think about including a small amount of current info about the places, like (e.g.): "F120 is an east-west highway in Nigeria that begins at Gakem on Trunk Road A4, continues through Obudu, and ends at the popular tourist spot, Obudu Ranch." "F102 is an east–west highway in Nigeria, starting from Shagamu on the A1 Road. Shagamu is a city in Ogun State, known for its cultivation of kolanuts (used to manufacture rope), cocoa, palm products, and fruits. The highway continues through Owode-Abeokuta and terminates at Meko on the frontier with the Republic of Benin." Chamaemelum (talk) 00:00, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's a duplicate of Lagos–Badagry Expressway and connects to the A1. Especially in the intros, and usually also beyond, please stay laser focused on the subject. Instead add wikis so people can click and read more, would it be relevant to them. gidonb (talk) 01:37, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment[edit]

Hello, Gidonb,

I just noticed your comment on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tjep Hoedemakers. I think you are right, we do nominate too many articles for all types of deletion. And I say that as an administrator who spends much of my time on the project deleting pages. But things can change over time. After years of going unnoticed, we now have several editors who review nominated PROD articles and remove tags from articles they believe are mistagged. Some of these articles then end up at AFD but I appreciate having checks and balances in the system since for a long time, PRODs were rarely challenged. I think most editors just forgot that they even existed as a form of deletion.

I've been closing AFD discussions for about 1 1/2 years now and in my experience there has been a consistent tilt towards deletion. I remember rarely seeing vocal, articulate support for keeping articles that might straddle the borderline of notability. It was just "Delete per nom". But given the change in makeup of AFD participants, I'm closing more discussions after seeing a consensus to Keep than I did at this time last year. I know participating in AFDs in a meaningful way can be taxing and frustrating but I don't think a lot of editors realize that 2 or 3 editors can actually determine whether or not an article exists on the project. It's an incredibly important contribution to make, whether it's helping find sources and fixing up so-so articles or helping get rid of promotional garbage that clutters up main space. Thanks for your contributions to AFD discussions. Liz Read! Talk! 04:37, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Liz, for this feedback. Thank you for wisely steering discussions in the right direction and for professionally closing AfDs. You are a positive force in AfDs! Thank you also for trying to point me to the half full glass. I agree that we have made great progress on PRODs as articles would just disappear. And even somewhat in the AfD debates where we have long ways to go. To reduce the number of PRODs and AfDs we should consider limiting the number of PROds and AfDs each editor can submit. Beside the stress and nuisance of excessive debates, I notice that the number of AfDs submitted per person is negatively correlated to their quality. Another domain that needs a deep dive and could potentially help are the merge discussions. The debates on categories and on odd stuff like redirects work best. gidonb (talk) 05:55, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I came to comment on your suggestion of a "delayed" AFD process and see I already made a comment here last month. I get your frustration with the deletion process and I've see other editors express similar views that we are nominating too many articles for deletion consideration. The problem that I see is that the AFD process is like an oil tanker, plowing ahead and difficult to turn around. I wouldn't even know where to start except with a proposal at WP:VP and I don't think there is a concrete proposal fleshed out as of now. I do agree with one commenter that said we don't have enough admins to handle as gatekeepers before an article reaches a deletion discussion. When I started closing AFD discussions in January 2022, there were about 8 admins I would regularly see closing discussions and now it's at about 4 or 5 that do more than one discussion that they happen to be interested in. I don't know whether or not it is burnout or other interests having priority or just everyone gone for the summer. Maybe if we had 12-15 admins regularly reviewing AFDs we could handle the system you suggested but not at our current staffing levels. And, unfortunately, unless we have a bump back in seeing admins after the school season starts, I don't see a fundamental change in the way things are. But keep airing your discontent, I think it's important for other editors to know that everyone isn't content with the process as it currently stands. Liz Read! Talk! 04:27, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz:Thanks for this feedback. I am taking all feedback, including yours, into account and am working to better integrate my proposal into existing procedures so that the added effort will be small. On the AfD end, it would REDUCE the work for the frequent closers that you mention. I do not have the habit of launching a lot of formal proposals, in strong understatement, and agree that editors can be conservative in the face of change, so still thinking this through. Thank you for the VP suggestion and for highlighting the workload and turnover of the AfD closers. These should be important selling points of my proposal. gidonb (talk) 15:39, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New pages patrol invitation[edit]

Hello, Gidonb.
  • The new pages patrol team is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles and redirects needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
  • I believe that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

Please help expand the three line section at Nir Oz#2023 Israel–Hamas war and make it into a full article about the Nir Oz massacre: "according to one report, 240 of the community's 400 residents were either missing or confirmed dead." Thank you, IZAK (talk) 03:22, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't written about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in nearly 20 years. We have so much of that content! gidonb (talk) 09:30, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

October thanks[edit]

Thank you for the barnstar! - The article was kept, possibly your voice made it. I had commented in the DYK nomination. - Today, my (daily) story is a place that inspired me, musings if you have time. My corner for memory and music has today a juxtaposition of what our local church choirs offer. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:29, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Towards the end of the month, I thought of Brian Bouldton, and his ways to compromise, - with musings about peace there, - feel free to join. Hevenu shalom aleichem. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:47, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Four Traditions of Geography[edit]

Well, thank you, but I didn't think it was an elegant solution so much as a reasonable compromise.

I am sometimes puzzled by the vehemence of debates about categories. We know that one such debate recently resulted in a very experienced editor being banned. (I liked BHG, but I was sad in recognizing that ArbCom was right in banning her. She really was making too many personal attacks, and she had been warned in the Portals case.)

Thank you. Robert McClenon (talk) 06:15, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. Well deserved! I appreciated that you had a keen eye for the needs of a fellow Wikipedian. The elegant solution inspiration comes from the Wikilove description. More than with the exact wording, I am worried that far too few people spread such love. I have worked very well BHG. I did not know that she went through an ArbCom or that she got into heated debates. I think I saw something about running a bot from a regular account at some stage. BHG and Marco have been powerhouses in category debates over the years. gidonb (talk) 08:57, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
