Relisting

Hi, I notice you've relisted several AFDs lately where there has been a substantial amount of discussion, but just no clear "majority". I wanted to let you know that the relisting guideline provides that relists are only to be placed where there are no more than one or two comments. AFDs with several comments where there has been no agreement on either side should be closed as no consensus, or at the very least, a rationale should be added explaining why you chose to relist the article. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Scott Ashjian would be an example. Thanks! Stifle (talk) 09:35, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

The Three Laws of Robotics

Hi

I am on the prowl for a GOCE member to take a look at the Three Laws of Robotics. I appreciate that you are busy but wondered if you may have enough time to take a look. It is a fairly large article and quite difficult going if one is not an Asimov fan :¬)

I am asking under my role in the Robotics project and have given it a quick copyedit myself but needed a second review before I send it for peer review in a few days or a week or so. The idea is to get it up to either GA or more hopefully back on the FAC listing from which it was delisted in December 2009.

Obviously I will understand if you do not have the time, it is simply that you were my first choice as you are a volunteer on the FAC and a GOCE member.

thanks in anticipation Chaosdruid (talk) 18:13, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

I couldn't believe such a template didn't exist already. Glad you like it! I've only just moved it into template space, and it probably does deserve a spot of advertising beyond word-of-mouth and HJ's talkpage stalkers: I've spammed it at WT:RFA, as RfA victims candidates were the template's intended demographic (though I'd hope it gets wider usage). Headlines

Hi HJ, Earlier I asked you to protect Headlines (The Saturdays album), Headlines (EP) and Headlines (The Saturdays EP). I now believe that the EP is notable. I've created a new version of the article at User:Lil-unique1/Sandbox/2 which I believe passes notability. Please could you unlock the target page → Headlines (EP) and histomerge all edits from 7 August - present.? --Lil-unique1 (talk) 14:10, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I took a look at this, on the basis that histmerges are something I should be able to do. Unfortunately WP:HISTMERGE contains scary language: "Warning: this procedure may only be undone by spending quite silly amounts of time. To undo a merge, see below. Do not do this if you're not sure what you're doing." On that basis (I'm not sure what I'm doing...) I'm going to punt it. I'll try and get some practice done in my sandboxes later, so ping me later if you've not managed to get it done, and I'll give it a go - but your best bet for now is to find someone clueful-and-competent ;-) TFOWR 08:29, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Maintenance

Hello Mitchell, or friendly stalkers. I have requested for adminship twice, once in January, and then in July. I failed both attempts, due to inexperience in certain fields. Just as I mentioned in the RFAs, I requested those rights mainly to help in maintenance areas.

And, just as I explained in the RFAs, I currently do a lot of maintenance relating to CSDs, particularly with files and its categories. I tag a lot of F2s and F8s, and occasionally C1s. I am also very interested in helping in the (enormous) backlog here and here.

It would really save a lot of time, and the time of other admins, if I have the ability to delete them myself. Thus, I want to ask you, if there is any possibility to assign these deletion rights, while restricting me from using any other admin functions on any other areas than the above.

I very well know the risks involved, and the damages than can be caused, when assigning the rights to inappropriate users. But I assure you that I will use them with extreme caution. Please do review my edit (and deleted edit) history, and see if you think this can be done. I am an Autoreviewer, Reviewer and a Rollbacker here on Wikipedia, and an Autopatroller, Filemover and Rollbacker on Commons. My SUL accounts can be found here. Thanks. Rehman(+) 02:40, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

There's no need for a review of your edits, what you're asking for is just not technically possible. There is the 'researcher' group that would do something similar to what you ask- and does not come with a delete button, only the ability to view deleted- but that is handed out only at direction of the Foundation. Assuming you have no research plan, the only way to get the permissions you want is a third RFA, which I would advise against at this time. Courcelles 02:43, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

I need help

This article is being discussed for deletion. A lot more references have been added to the article, but I am not sure if they comply to Wikipedia's guidelines - (the references are mostly biographies). Also, in the deletion discussion, there have been many votes to keep the article, but all of them have come from IP addresses which have made no other edits to Wikipedia, or from users who have solely edited the article being discussed for deletion. I'm (relatively) new to Wikipedia, so is this allowed? I've never been involved in a deletion discussion before. Some assistance would be appreciated, and could someone please tell me if the references are OK or not. Thanks. Beeshoney (talk) 10:04, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

PS. I am putting the query here simply because HJ Mitchell gave me rollback and reviewer rights.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Beeshoney (talkcontribs)

(talk page stalker) The references - at first glance - look OK to me, but I have not checked them out in detail. Biographies should be fine, but I'd hope another talkpage stalker will put me straight if I'm wrong? (WP:BLPs aren't an area I usually work with).
Regarding the deletion discussion, the IPs have been tagged as {{SPA}}s - the editor who closes the discussion will take that into account when closing the discussion. In general "single purpose accounts" tend to influence the final result very little, if at all - they're simply disregarded. TFOWR 10:11, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)Given the particular flood of them I put all the IP votes in a collapse box and semi-protected the debate, which will hopefully keep it on track and actually discussing the article rather than the participants! ~ mazcatalk 11:15, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm going to take a crack at expanding Henry Middleton over the next few days - could you maybe lend a hand if you have time? Connormah 22:01, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Could you go over the article and make any revisions you think would be necessary? I've done what I could with the refs - I'm not really aiming for GA or anything, though, it probably not make the cut, but I guess the expansion never helps. Thanks. Connormah 23:23, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
I'll have a look a little bit later and see if there's anything useful I can do. John Barrowman

Let's see if anyone tries to get around the semi by creating an account; if they do, pending changes could be tried? Black Kite (t) (c) 13:27, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Eh? If they created an account and got round the semi, they'd have to be autoconfirmed, in which case pending changes (or PC1, at least, I've yet to see PC2 used) would be useless. I thought it might be a good alternative to the semi, so we can filter out the crap before it gets in, but still allowfor the possibility of constructive IP/new account edits. It's up to you, anyway. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:32, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Protection of Template:uw-block

HJ, thank you for protecting uw-block. Could I ask you to make a modification for me? Another editor and I are still in the process of rolling out this new meta template. I had requested semiprotection in line with the other user warning templates, though I do understand the concept of permanently protecting meta templates. However, the problem here is that neither I nor my colleague are administrators. You'll see from the page history that we've been very actively editing the template over the last week, and there's still much more work to do. I do more than half of my work on templates, and I know that wait time for an edit request is often a day and a half. Permanently protecting right now will severely hurt development of the template and further rollout. Could we delay permanent protection for just a few more weeks until we finish applying the metatemplate to all the uw-block templates? Thanks. --Bsherr (talk) 00:09, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Give me a couple of minutes and I'll sort it. Do you need to move it anywhere I can I leave the move-protection at admin only? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:17, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I've reduced it to [edit=autoconfirmed] [move=sysop]. Let me know if you need anything else and, given the visibility of the template and the people likely to see it, let me know when I can put the protection back up. It's a shame that you have to wait so long for {{editprotected}} requests. I do my best to keep the category clean, but there are quite a few fiddly template requests that are out of my depth. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:33, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks so much. The move protection is just fine. I'll let you know as soon as we're done. Yeah, the wait can be awful sometimes. Since most of my edits are to templates, I've thought about seeking a sysop nom just so I can dispense with the editrequest process. (Alas I'm low in contributions though, and I don't know how welcoming the club is of someone who spends his time mostly on templates instead of articles.)
I remember when hardly any of the metatemplates transcluded into substituted templates were fully protected. It's not like the highly transcluded templates where hundreds of thousands of transclusions are affected. The only consequence is to those who happen to be substituting a template carrying the meta at the time the bad edit's in place, and it's quickly caught and reverted, and the logged-in user is blocked. But it seems counterterrorism is the trend around here. Gosh, anons can't even edit the TFA anymore. Crazy. --Bsherr (talk) 00:50, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
They should be able to edit it most days, but sometimes the vandalism gets excessive. As it happens, I'm the one who started the RfC to abolish the practice of not protecting the TFA. You could try an RfA but, sadly, your chances probably wouldn't be high at the minute. For some reason admins who want to edit templates need to be experts in dealing with vandals and whatever else! I think the reason they're all protected now is because of the sheer amount of use they get. If uw-block was vandalised and the edit reverted in 5 minutes, the vandalism would probably show up on dozens of talk pages. I've been a reasonably active admin for 3 months and I've made well over 1,000 entries in the block log, so these templates are widely used. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:10, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Hah, small wikiworld. All good points, of course. (Except that if you protect too much, sysop patrollers will complain about boredom.) I'll be knocking on your talk page the next time I'm greenboxed for a full day on WP:PER, HJ. Don't forget us little tempgeeks, willya? :-) --Bsherr (talk) 01:42, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

T:MP

If you're going to protect the T:MP shortcut (which is probably a decent idea, if only to make people pause for thought), it could do with having {{pp-protected}} on it too. Modest Genius talk 01:52, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

You can put the template on (as I've done), but it won't display. It shows up in the wikitext and it categorises it, though. It defeats me why people would remove the {{go away}} template, much less how an admin can actually delete the damn thing, but the full protection should stop that sort of drive-by "I don't know what this is for, so I'l remove it" crap! That's interesting. I hadn't noticed the RfD. I'm surprised it only attracted 3 !votes and none of them from anybody with any particular involvement in the Main Page. It was also 7 months ago, so I'm inclined to leave it (not least because I use it frequently) unless a consensus develops to the contrary. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:10, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I'm pretty sure it wasn't, though I do seem to remember some discussion about it afterwards, which I think included the user who started the RFD (no idea where, sorry. maybe the since-deleted talk page?). Besides, speedy deleting this (again) over a technicality from months (and several deletions) ago, purely to force a one-sided DRV discussion, seems like rather a waste of time. Modest Genius talk 02:14, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I suppose I could invoke IAR in the grounds that it's more useful as a redirect than a red link. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:18, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict) More to the point, it's clearly a special case, which was after all deliberately exempted from the cross-namespace ban. Mind you, that hasn't stopped speedies and the RFD deleting it under those same criteria. Modest Genius talk 02:32, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
See, I'm actually inclined to G4 and salt the thing. It looks like from piecing together the history and the logs that you, Modest Genius, were the one who created this incarnation of this redirect. The original RFD consensus is valid- RFD has no quorum, and three is a lot-and, well, it's a textbook G4 anyway you slice it; the content is exactly the same. The RFD is also newer than the WT:CSD discussions that exempted it from R2 by ~18 months. There's also less than 50 links to it, and it gets almost no use. I also don't think DRV would overturn the discussion, as it couldn't have been closed any other way whatsoever. Courcelles 02:31, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Ha! It gets less hits than this talk page! By quite a way. I've a funny feeling I account for a high percentage of those hits! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:35, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

And to be honest I'm probably about half of what's left. ;) The Raptor You rang?/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 02:42, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Those stats are rather confusing, because I use it about that much on my own. We can't all be doing so... The links also surprise me, though I suppose it mostly gets used in edit summaries. Oh and yes, I recreated the shortcut after it was caught in a bot sweep, though it was also undeleted a few hours later by User:Bencherlite (as far as I'm aware no-one asked for that). Tbh, this seems more like a textbook case of IAR than G4, but opinions obviously differ. Modest Genius talk 02:56, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I agreed with you, but then I was less certain when I realised more people visit my talk page than follow that redirect. You could make a legitimate argument for the use of IAR, but I think we need a firm consensus one way or the other. Perhaps an RfD with an explanation of everything and notification on [I was about to type T:MP!] the target of the redirect etc would garner the opinions of enough interested people? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:01, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I think that's a good idea. The Raptor You rang?/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 03:04, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
<shrug> I suppose that wouldn't be unreasonable. I think my position is fairly obvious, so it would be a bit of a CoI for me to list it. If someone wants to start the discussion I'll certainly contribute. Modest Genius talk 21:54, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Although I didn't explicitly break the Uw-block3 template. Was posting the temporary block message on an indefinite blocked user's talk page a glitch in the Twinkle software or just an accidental omission? I tested it out manually on the UW sandbox and it worked correctly. mechamind90 04:27, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

This? That was my fault. I hit "vandalism block", when I wanted "vandalism-only account block" (which is right below it). You're off the hook this time- it was just my own idiocy! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:46, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Re: Ethan Hawke

I told myself, no made a promise to myself on March 11 of this year that my other three FAs would NEVER ... EVER be on the Main Page after what I went through with Kirsten Dunst. I kept that promise cause I never submitted Hawke's article here, I guess someone else had plans with this. You're right, it's not going to be good at all. Right now, there hasn't been any vandalism, but when I first worked on the article, there was a lot of "bad activity", so, let's just see how this plays out. --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 18:51, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

I think just about every FA gets it's day on the Main Page. If a slot is empty Raul654 picks an article from Category:Featured articles that have not appeared on the main page. I'll keep an eye on it, anyway. At least I have superpowers a mop this time, so it'll be easy enough for me to block vandals and protect it if necessary. I've a feeling it might be the most heavily vandalised TFA for a while, though. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:11, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, Raul has that power to do stuff... oh well. Yeah, you have mop, thank God for that, though, I'm not saying you should use it right away, you know to avoid that whole COI thing. Yeah, cause of his PL. He was married to Uma Thurman, cheated on her (he admitted to it), divorced her, married their children's nanny and had a child with her, so. Well, I'll prepare myself to what's to come. Okay, I'd like your opinion, would this be a good image to be the lead one? --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 19:17, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Well there's no COI in blocking a vandal. I've no problem with sitting on my watchlist with the rollback button and the banhammer for a while. That's a great image. Shame about the lighting, but I'd say it would make a good lead image and I'll see if I can find someone to have a look at the lighting issue if you want. (ec) Yeah, I know, but I mean if the vandalism first begins and gets out of hand after say four users vandalize it and you go and protect it. God, I don't even know what I said. I'm glad with the assistance. I guess I'll have the rollback button ready as well. If you got a friend who can help out with the lighting, please ask him/her. :) P.S. If you can help out TFOWR on August 25, that would be great. ;) --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 19:35, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

It was tried on a TFA back at the start of the trial and everyone was irate about it because it was so effing slow and you had about 5 reviewers scrambling to accept each edit and it was generally a pain in the arse. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:44, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

RfA

If I were to go for an RfA right now would I be snowed out? I know that I have a way to low editcount which most people would say means little experience. The main reason that I care about this is that through my many edits to Project space I have found that their are a ton of backlogs that never empty. I want to help with those. Another thing that would lead to opposes is that I don't have a lot of article work. I don't see how that is relevant to whether someone would be a good administrator. All you do as an administrator is block users who vandalize, protect articles that are having edit disputes, delete pages that do not belong on the encyclopedia, and give users who are trustworthy extra permissions. I see how lot's of articles would equal knowledge of policy but is there no way that I could show people that I was knowledgeable? Mr. R00t Talk 00:22, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)(Not HJ:)) Some people just want administrators with article experience for various reasons. You'll likely get some oppositions due to your edit count (which isn't THAT low) but more due to your edit distribution (>50% in user space). It can seem kind of silly, but that's the way some people treat RFAs. All you can do is tell the truth and have a good nominator if you are intent on running now. Ryan Norton 00:38, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Who would you suggest as a good nominator? Mr. R00t Talk 00:48, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Honestly? Your chances of getting through RfA are very slim. Edit count isn't everything, but it is a good yardstick and yours is on the low side. I generally think around 5,000 is a good indicator, more if you make a lot of semi-automated edits with Huggle/Igloo/AWB etc. To put things in perspective, my sock has over 5,000 edits and I only use it for the occassional bit of vandal whacking (more than 80% of its edits are with Igloo!), I had just over 13,000 edits by my second RfA and over 5,000 even before my first attempt (which failed miserably). My best advice is to work on some articles, make yourself useful and gain the kind of experience you can only get from having been around a while. Sorry. :( HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:55, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
If I hadn't thought that would be the outcome I would have just gone to RfA. Mr. R00t Talk 00:59, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi HJ, I'd like to request that all the IPs in my school get blocked, too much vandalism and one of my friends thought it'd be funny to post a silly message when I stepped away from my laptop. Fridae'§Doom | Spare your time? 04:16, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Give me the adress (by email if you prefer) and I'll look into it. If you need a rangeblock, though, you'd have to ask someone who, unlike me, knows what they're doing! Btw, I see you nominated Washington for GA. You've got a great reviewer there, Silk is one of the best GA reviewers out there, which is great for such a big and important article. Alternative account

Hi! I know you have an alternative account named Whisky drinker, but why do you use it? Is it because you don't want the admin tools at certain times? /HeyMid (contributions) 21:47, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Well I set the account up for security of this one. If I wanted to log in from a computer I didn't trust, I could do it with that account and, if that one's compromised, it's not a big deal, it can just be blocked until I can get the password reset, but a compromised admin account is a bad thing! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:58, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, mainly administrator accounts are hijacked, because there is no reason to hijack an account with no permissions but is only autoconfirmed, then it's better to create your own account. /HeyMid (contributions) 22:19, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
IIRC doesn't it have rollback, though? Connormah 22:23, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Whisky drinker? Yeah. But it's not as if rollback (and reviewer) can do any serious damage and if the account was behaving oddly, it's fairly well known and written all over its talk page and userpage that the account belongs to me, so it should be blocked fairly quickly. I very rarely use it for that, though. I mainly use it for Igloo or when I need a break from the near-constant orange bar. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:44, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Doesn't really matter - I agree. Connormah 23:20, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

I meant for you to take a look at the article and try to decide whether it was ITN worthy. Why the hell are you still awake? Mr. R00t Talk 03:20, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
I added a couple of categories. It'll need to be expanded a bit (and will need its talk page creating) to be long enough for ITN. Also, those references would, ideally, be properly formatted. One of the WP:RefToolbars can help you there. I'm still awake because I couldn't sleep (though I'm in danger of falling asleep on the keyboard now!) and because The Blue Planet is fascinating! Getting better. I sorted the talk page out. Now I'm going to bed, much as I hate going to bed with the ITN timer red. No, I think thats fine, many thanks. Off2riorob (talk) 17:31, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
In general non-admins don't close CFD's since WP:CFDW is fully protected, and the vast, vast majority of discussions require some movement of articles. For the sake of making this a G4 (CFD discussions do not expire, and recreation of a category is always a G4) if it ever returns, this likely should be changed to replace the speedy delete with a traditional delete per the discussion... Courcelles 18:12, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
I'll leave it up to you, mate; you know much, much more about CfD than I do. Personally, I don't think it's really likely to be re-created and if you wanted it covered by G4, I would have thought that the discussion should have been allowed to run the full week. It's up to you, though. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:53, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

I closed it because the creator was asking for it and was getting personally attacked in the thread. There is nothing written as far as i know to stop a non admin from closing an CFD and I have closed a few in my time in such ignore all rules situations, I totally agree with HJ, this cat is likely never going to be recreated and as the thread was upsetting the creator, its all good. Off2riorob (talk) 19:58, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Oh, I'll leave it. If it comes back, IAR G4 can always be done. Back in the day CFDW was only semi-protected, so non-admins used to close a lot more CFD's than they can now. (Actually, it was semi-protected for three months just last year, looking at the logs. Hmm.) On another note, why is it that CFD only sees traffic when some drama flares up? The number of renames/deletions I put through with merely the consensus of silence is amazing.) Courcelles 20:15, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
I know, sometimes its like no one is bothered, pisses me off sometimes also. Off2riorob (talk) 20:31, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
It really isn't a very rewarding area, I sometimes wonder if the whole category system is worth the hassle it sometimes causes. ~ mazca talk 23:47, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Well it provides a useful means of searching that's pretty much unique to the wiki model. There's nothing I hate more than sifting through hundreds of results from a website's search function. I very rarely venture over to CfD, though, because it just seems like an old boys' club where decisions are made in smoke-filled rooms based on unwritten rules that are known only to the members of the club. Perhaps my perception is unfair and I'm aware some people have a similar perception of ITN. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:14, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
